Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularities with a torus action of complexity one

Using Altmann-Hausen-Suss description of $\mathbb{T}$-varieties via divisorial fans and Kóvacs-Schwede-Smith characterization of Du Bois singularities, we study Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois $\mathbb{T}$-singularities of complexity one. We exhibit cohomological criteria for a $\mathbb{T}$-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay and Du Bois in terms of polyhedral divisors. We give an example of a Cohen-Macaulay Du Bois singularity of complexity one which does not have rational singularities.

On linear systems with multiple points on a rational normal curve

We give a closed formula for the dimension of all linear systems in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with assigned multiplicity at arbitrary collections of points lying on a rational normal curve of degree $n$. In particular we give a purely geometric explanation of the speciality of these linear systems, which is due to the presence of certain subvarieties in the base locus: linear spans of points, secant varieties of the rational normal curve or joins between them.

Lines on cubic hypersurfaces over finite fields

We show that smooth cubic hypersurfaces of dimension $n$ defined over a finite field ${\bf F}_q$ contain a line defined over ${\bf F}_q$ in each of the following cases: - $n=3$ and $q\ge 11$; - $n=4$ and $q\ne 3$; - $n\ge 5$. For a smooth cubic threefold $X$, the variety of lines contained in $X$ is a smooth projective surface $F(X)$ for which the Tate conjecture holds, and we obtain information about the Picard number of $F(X)$ and its 5-dimensional principally polarized Albanese variety $A(F(X))$.

Chilean configuration of conics, lines and points

Using the theory of rational elliptic fibrations, we construct and discuss a one parameter family of configurations of $12$ conics and $9$ points in the projective plane that realizes an abstract configuration $(12_6,9_8)$. This is analogous to the famous Hesse configuration of $12$ lines and $9$ points forming an abstract configuration $(12_3,9_4)$. We also show that any Halphen elliptic fibration of index $2$ with four triangular singular fibers arises from such configuration of conics.

On base loci of higher fundamental forms of toric varieties

We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and we give some applications of the above result. In particular we provide a classification for the second fundamental forms on toric surfaces, and we also give some new examples of weighted $3$-dimensional projective spaces whose blowing up at a general point is not Mori dream.

Linear systems on the blow-up of (P^1)^n

In this note we study linear systems on the blow-up of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ at $r$ points in very general position. We prove that the fibers of the projections $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n \rightarrow (\mathbb{P}^1)^s, 1\leq s \leq n-1$ can give contribution to the speciality of the linear system. This allows us to give a new definition of expected dimension of a linear system in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ which we call fiber dimension. Finally, we state a conjecture about linear systems on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$.

On deformations of toric varieties

Let X be a smooth complete toric variety. We describe the Altmann-Ilten-Vollmert equivariant deformations of toric varieties in the language of Cox rings. More precisely we construct one parameters families of deformations of X, such that the total space of the deformation is a T-variety of complexity one defined by a trinomial equation, and the deformation map is equivariant with respect to the torus action. Moreover we show that the images of all these families via the Kodaira-Spencer map form a basis of the vector space H1(X,T_X).

About the semiample cone of the symmetric product of a curve

Let $C$ be a smooth curve which is complete intersection of a quadric and a degree $k>2$ surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and let $C^{(2)}$ be its second symmetric power. In this paper we study the finite generation of the extended canonical ring $R(Δ,K) := \bigoplus_{(a,b)\in\mathbb{Z}^2}H^0(C^{(2)},aΔ+bK)$, where $Δ$ is the image of the diagonal and $K$ is the canonical divisor. We first show that $R(Δ,K)$ is finitely generated if and only if the difference of the two $g_k^1$ on $C$ is torsion non-trivial and then show that this holds on an analytically dense locus of the moduli space of such curves.

On del Pezzo elliptic varieties of degree $\leq 4$

\special{html:<a href="hrefstring">} Let $Y$ be a del Pezzo variety of degree $d\leq 4$ and dimension $n\geq 3$, let $H$ be an ample class such that $-K_Y=(n-1)H$ and let $Z\subset Y$ be a $0$-dimensional subscheme of length $d$ such that the subsystem of elements of $|H|$ with base locus $Z$ gives a rational morphism $π_Z\colon Y\dashrightarrow{\mathbb P}^{n-1}$. Denote by $π\colon X\to {\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ the elliptic fibration obtained by resolving the indeterminacy locus of $π_Z$. Extending the results of [arXiv:1305.3340] we study the geometry of the variety $X$ and we prove that the Mordell-Weil group of $π$ is finite if and only if the Cox ring of $X$ is finitely generated.

On minimal rational elliptic surfaces

We construct $13$ projective $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Fano toric varieties and show that for any minimal rational elliptic surface $X$ there is one such toric variety $Z_X$ and a divisor class $δ_X\in {\rm Cl}(Z_X)$ such that the number of $(-1)$-curves of $X$ equals the dimension of the Riemann-Roch space of $δ_X$. As an application we give the number of $(-1)$-curves of any such elliptic fibration of Halphen index $2$.

Computing Cox rings

We consider modifications, for example blow ups, of Mori dream spaces and provide algorithms for investigating the effect on the Cox ring, e.g. testing finite generation or computing an explicit presentation in terms of generators and relations. As a first application, we compute the Cox rings of all Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one. Moreover, we show computationally that all smooth rational surfaces of Picard number at most six are Mori dream surfaces and we provide explicit presentations of the Cox ring for those not admitting a torus action. Finally, we provide the Cox rings of projective spaces blown up at a certain special point configurations.

Hypersurfaces in Mori dream spaces

Let X be a hypersurface of a Mori dream space Z. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cox ring R(X) of X to be isomorphic to R(Z)/(f), where R(Z) is the Cox ring of Z and f is a defining section for X. We apply our results to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of toric Fano fourfolds. Our second application is to general degree d hypersurfaces in P^n containing a linear subspace of dimension n-2.
