Single 3$d$ transition metal atoms on multi-layer graphene systems: electronic configurations, bonding mechanisms and role of the substrate

The electronic configurations of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu adatoms on graphene and graphite have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and charge transfer multiplet theory. A delicate interplay between long-range interactions and local chemical bonding is found to influence the adatom equilibrium distance and magnetic moment. The results for Fe and Co are consistent with purely physisorbed species having, however, different 3$d$-shell occupancies on graphene and graphite ($d^{n+1}$ and $d^n$, respectively). On the other hand, for the late 3$d$ metals Ni and Cu a trend towards chemisorption is found, which strongly quenches the magnetic moment on both substrates.

Many-body effects in x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra within the LSDA+DMFT framework

The theoretical description of photoemission spectra of transition metals was greatly improved recently by accounting for the correlations between the d electrons within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We assess the improvement of the LSDA+DMFT over the plain LSDA in x-ray absorption spectroscopy, which --- unlike the photoemission spectroscopy --- is probing unocccupied electronic states. By investigating the L2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of Fe, Co, and Ni, we find that the LSDA+DMFT improves the LSDA results, in particular concerning the asymmetry of the L3 white line. Differences with respect to the experiment, nevertheless, remain --- particularly concerning the ratio of the intensities of the L3 and L2 peaks. The changes in the XMCD peak intensities invoked by the use of the LSDA+DMFT are a consequence of the improved description of the orbital polarization and are consistent with the XMCD sum rules. Accounting for the core hole within the final state approximation does not generally improve the results. This indicates that to get more accurate L2,3-edge XANES and XMCD spectra, one has to treat the core hole beyond the final state approximation.

Finite-temperature magnetism of Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and Co$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ alloys

The finite-temperature magnetic properties of Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and Co$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ alloys have been investigated. It is shown that the temperature-dependent magnetic behaviour of alloys, composed of originally magnetic and non-magnetic elements, cannot be described properly unless the coupling between magnetic moments at magnetic atoms (Fe,Co) mediated through the interactions with induced magnetic moments of non-magnetic atoms (Pd,Pt) is included. A scheme for the calculation of the Curie temperature ($T_C$) for this type of systems is presented which is based on the extended Heisenberg Hamiltonian with the appropriate exchange parameters $J_{ij}$ obtained from {\em ab-initio} electronic structure calculations. Within the present study the KKR Green's function method has been used to calculate the $J_{ij}$ parameters. A comparison of the obtained Curie temperatures for Fe$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ and Co$_x$Pt$_{1-x}$ alloys with experimental data shows rather good agreement.
