Roller-Coaster in a Flatland: Magnetoresistivity in Eu-intercalated Graphite

Novel phenomena in magnetically-intercalated graphite has been a subject of much research, pioneered and promoted by M.~S. and G.~Dresselhaus and many others in the 1980s. Among the most enigmatic findings of that era was a dramatic, roller-coaster-like behavior of the magnetoresistivity in EuC$_6$ compound, in which magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ ions form a triangular lattice that is commensurate to graphite honeycomb planes. In this study, we provide a long-awaited {\it microscopic} explanation of this behavior, demonstrating that the resistivity of EuC$_6$ is dominated by spin excitations in Eu-planes and their highly nontrivial evolution with the magnetic field. Together with our theoretical analysis, the present study showcases the power of the synthetic 2D materials as a source of potentially significant insights into the nature of exotic spin excitations.

Rashba versus Kohn-Luttinger: Evolution of p-wave superconductivity in magnetized two-dimensional Fermi gas subject to spin-orbit interaction

We study how the Rashba spin-orbit interaction influences unconventional superconductivity in a two dimensional electron gas partially spin-polarized by a magnetic field. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that for all field orientations, only the larger Fermi surface is superconducting. When the magnetic field is oriented out-of-plane the system realizes a topological $p+ip$ pairing state. When the field is rotated in-plane the order parameter develops nodes along the field direction and finite center-of-mass-momentum pairing is realized. We demonstrate that the pairing symmetry of the system can be easily probed experimentally due to the dependence of various thermodynamic quantities on the magnetic field geometry, and calculate the electronic specific heat as an example.

Equilibrium currents in chiral systems with non-zero Chern number

We describe simple quantum-mechanical approach to calculating equilibrium particle current along the edge of a system with non-trivial band spectrum topology. The approach does not require any a priori knowledge of the band topology and, as a matter of fact, treats topological and non-topological contributions to the edge currents on the same footing. We illustrate its usefulness by demonstrating the existence of `topologically non-trivial' particle currents along the edges of three different physical systems: two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman magnetic field, surface state of a topological insulator, and kagome antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We describe relation of our results to the notion of orbital magnetization.

Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo Method Applied to Fermionized Frustrated Spins

We demonstrate, by considering the triangular lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model, that Monte Carlo sampling of skeleton Feynman diagrams within the fermionization framework offers a universal first-principles tool for strongly correlated lattice quantum systems. We observe the fermionic sign blessing---cancellation of higher order diagrams leading to a finite convergence radius of the series. We calculate the magnetic susceptibility of the triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet in the correlated paramagnet regime and reveal a surprisingly accurate microscopic correspondence with its classical counterpart at all accessible temperatures. The extrapolation of the observed relation to zero temperature suggests the absence of the magnetic order in the ground state. We critically examine the implications of this unusual scenario.

Interplay of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting in the absorption lineshape of 2D fermions

We suggest that electron spin resonance (ESR) experiment can be used as a probe of spinon excitations of hypothetical spin-liquid state of frustrated antiferromagnet in the presence of asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We describe assumptions under which the ESR response is reduced to the response of 2D electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Unlike previous treatments, the spin-orbit coupling, Δ_{SO}, is not assumed small compared to the Zeeman splitting, Δ_Z. We demonstrate that ESR response diverges at the edges of the absorption spectrum for ac magnetic field perpendicular to the static field. At the compensation point, Δ_{SO}\approx Δ_Z, the broad absorption spectrum exhibits features that evolve with temperature, T, even when T is comparable to the Fermi energy.

Intersubband Edge Singularity in Metallic Nanotubes

Tunneling density of states of both the massless and massive (gapped) particles in metallic carbon nanotubes is known to have anomalous energy dependence. This is the result of coupling to multiple low-energy bosonic excitation (plasmons). For both kinds of particles the ensuing effect is the suppression of the density of states by electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate that the optical absorption between gapless and gapped states is affected by the many-body effects in the opposite way. The absorption probability is enhanced compared with the non-interacting value and develops a power-law frequency dependence with the exponent -0.2 for typical nanotubes.

Modes of magnetic resonance in the spin liquid phase of Cs2CuCl4

We report the observation of a frequency shift and splitting of the electron spin resonance (ESR) mode of the low-dimensional S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 in the spin-correlated state below the Curie-Weiss temperature 4 K but above the ordering temperature 0.62 K. The shift and splitting exhibit strong anisotropy with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field and do not vanish in zero field. The low-temperature evolution of spin resonance response is a result of the specific modification of one-dimensional spinon continuum under the action of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DM) within the spin chains. Parameters of the uniform DM interaction are derived from the experiment.
