High-field magnetic structure of the triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2

The magnetic H - T phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 with an equilateral triangular lattice structure is studied with 87Rb NMR and neutron diffraction techniques. This combination of experimental techniques allows us to determine the ordered components of the magnetic moments on the Fe3+ ions within various high-field phases - the Y, UUD, V, and fan structures, stabilized in the compound by the in-plane magnetic field. It is also established that the transition from the V to the fan phase is of first-order, whereas the transition from the fan phase to the polarized paramagnetic phase is continuous. An analysis of the NMR spectra shows that the high-field fan phase of RbFe(MoO4)2 can be successfully described by a periodic commensurate oscillation of the magnetic moments around the field direction in each Fe layer combined with an incommensurate modulation of the magnetic structure perpendicular to the layers.

Direct determination of exchange parameters in Cs2CuBr4 and Cs2CuCl4: high-field ESR studies

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system.

High-field magnetic resonance of spinons and magnons in a triangular lattice S=1/2 antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4

The electron spin resonance doublet indicating the width of the two spinon continuum in a spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 was studied in high magnetic field. The doublet was found to collapse in a magnetic field of a half of the saturation field. The collapse of the doublet occurs via vanishing of the high frequency component in a qualitative agreement with the theoretical prediction for the S=1/2 chain. The field of the collapse is, however, much lower than expected for the S=1/2 chain. This is proposed to be due to the destruction of frustration of interchain exchange bonds in a magnetic field, which restores the 2D character of this spin system. In the saturated phase the mode with the Larmor frequency and a much weaker mode downshifted for 119~GHz are observed. The weak mode is of exchange origin, it demonstrates a positive frequency shift at heating corresponding to the repulsion of magnons in the saturated phase.

Multiferroicity in the generic easy-plane triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2

RbFe(MoO4)2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLA) that displays a zero-field magnetically-driven multiferroic phase with a chiral spin structure. By inelastic neutron scattering, we determine quantitatively the spin Hamiltonian. We show that the easy-plane anisotropy is nearly 1/3 of the dominant spin exchange, making RbFe(MoO4)2 an excellent system for studying the physics of the model 2D easy-plane TLA. Our measurements demonstrate magnetic-field induced fluctuations in this material to stabilize the generic finite-field phases of the 2D XY TLA. We further explain how Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions can generate ferroelectricity only in the zero field phase. Our conclusion is that multiferroicity in RbFe(MoO4)2, and its absence at high fields, results from the generic properties of the 2D XY TLA.

Magnetic resonance in the ordered phases of the 2D frustrated quantum magnet Cs2CuCl4

The temperature evolution of the electron spin resonance is studied at cooling the crystal samples of Cs2CuCl4 through the Neel point 0.62 K. A coexistence of the high-frequency spinon type resonance developed in the spin-liquid phase and of the low-frequency antiferromagnetic resonance was found in the ordered phase. The low-frequency magnetic resonance spectrum in the low field range has two gapped branches and corresponds well to the spectrum of spin excitations of a planar spiral spin structure with two axes of the anisotropy. The field induced phase transitions result in a more complicated low-frequency spectra.

Modes of magnetic resonance in the spin liquid phase of Cs2CuCl4

We report the observation of a frequency shift and splitting of the electron spin resonance (ESR) mode of the low-dimensional S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 in the spin-correlated state below the Curie-Weiss temperature 4 K but above the ordering temperature 0.62 K. The shift and splitting exhibit strong anisotropy with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field and do not vanish in zero field. The low-temperature evolution of spin resonance response is a result of the specific modification of one-dimensional spinon continuum under the action of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DM) within the spin chains. Parameters of the uniform DM interaction are derived from the experiment.

Co-existing chiral and collinear phases in a distorted triangular antiferromagnet

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical predictions found in literature

Triplet spin resonance of the Haldane compound with interchain coupling

Spin resonance absorption of the triplet excitations is studied experimentally in the Haldane magnet PbNi2V2O8. The spectrum has features of spin S=1 resonance in a crystal field, with all three components, corresponding to transitions between spin sublevels, being observable. The resonance field is temperature dependent, indicating the renormalization of excitation spectrum in interaction between the triplets. Magnetic resonance frequencies and critical fields of the magnetization curve are consistent with a boson version of the macroscopic field theory [Affleck 1992, Farutin & Marchenko 2007], implying the field induced ordering at the critical field, while contradict the previously used approach of noninteracting spin chains.

Quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice RbFe(MoO4)2

RbFe(MoO4)2 is a rare example of a nearly two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. Magnetic resonance spectra and magnetization curves reveal that the system has a layered spin structure with six magnetic sublattices. The sublattices within a layer are arranged in a triangular manner with the magnetization vectors 120 degree apart. The H-T phase diagram, containing at least five different magnetic phases is constructed. In zero field, RbFe(MoO4)2 undergoes a phase transition at T_N=3.8 K into a non-collinear triangular spin structure with all the spins confined in the basal plane. The application of an in-plane magnetic field induces a collinear spin state between the fields H_c1=47 kOe and H_c2=71 kOe and produces a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation moment. Both the ESR and the magnetization measurements also clearly indicate an additional first-order phase transition in a field of 35 kOe. The exact nature of this phase transition is uncertain.
