Bakry-Émery curvature on graphs as an eigenvalue problem

In this paper, we reformulate the Bakry-Émery curvature on a weighted graph in terms of the smallest eigenvalue of a rank one perturbation of the so-called curvature matrix using Schur complement. This new viewpoint allows us to show various curvature function properties in a very conceptual way. We show that the curvature, as a function of the dimension parameter, is analytic, strictly monotone increasing and strictly concave until a certain threshold after which the function is constant. Furthermore, we derive the curvature of the Cartesian product using the crucial observation that the curvature matrix of the product is the direct sum of each component. Our approach of the curvature functions of graphs can be employed to establish analogous results for the curvature functions of weighted Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, as an application, we confirm a conjecture (in a general weighted case) of the fact that the curvature does not decrease under certain graph modifications.

A note on eigenvalue bounds for non-compact manifolds

In this article we prove upper bounds for the Laplace eigenvalues $λ_k$ below the essential spectrum for strictly negatively curved Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Our bound is given in terms of $k^2$ and specific geometric data of the manifold. This applies also to the particular case of non-compact manifolds whose sectional curvature tends to $-\infty$, where no essential spectrum is present due to a theorem of Donnelly/Li. The result stands in clear contrast to Laplacians on graphs where such a bound fails to be true in general.

Eigenfunctions and the Integrated Density of States on Archimedean Tilings

We study existence and absence of $\ell^2$-eigenfunctions of the combinatorial Laplacian on the 11 Archimedean tilings of the Euclidean plane by regular convex polygons. We show that exactly two of these tilings (namely the $(3.6)^2$ "Kagome" tiling and the $(3.12^2)$ tiling) have $\ell^2$-eigenfunctions. These eigenfunctions are infinitely degenerate and are constituted of explicitly described eigenfunctions which are supported on a finite number of vertices of the underlying graph (namely on the hexagons and $12$-gons in the tilings, respectively). Furthermore, we provide an explicit expression for the Integrated Density of States (IDS) of the Laplacian on Archimedean tilings in terms of eigenvalues of Floquet matrices and deduce integral formulas for the IDS of the Laplacian on the $(4^4)$, $(3^6)$, $(6^3)$, $(3.6)^2$, and $(3.12^2)$ tilings. Our method of proof can be applied to other $\mathbb{Z}^d$-periodic graphs as well.

A support theorem for the X-ray transform on manifolds with plane covers

This article is concerned with support theorems of the X-ray transform on non-compact manifolds with conjugate points. In particular, we prove that all simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups have a support theorem. Important ingredients of the proof are the concept of plane covers and a support theorem for simple manifolds by Krishnan. We also provide examples of non-homogeneous 3-dimensional simply connected manifolds with conjugate points which have support theorems.

Minimizing length of billiard trajectories in hyperbolic polygons

Closed billiard trajectories in a polygon in the hyperbolic plane can be coded by the order in which they hit the sides of the polygon. In this paper, we consider the average length of cyclically related closed billiard trajectories in ideal hyperbolic polygons and prove the conjecture that this average length is minimized for regular hyperbolic polygons. The proof uses a strict convexity property of the geodesic length function in Teichmüller space with respect to the Weil-Petersson metric, a fundamental result established by Wolpert.

Wegner estimate and localization for alloy-type models with sign-changing exponentially decaying single-site potentials

We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ and $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ with a random potential of alloy-type. The single-site potential is assumed to be exponentially decaying but not necessarily of fixed sign. In the continuum setting we require a generalized step-function shape. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. In the described situation a Wegner estimate which is polynomial in the volume of the box and linear in the size of the energy interval holds. We apply the established Wegner estimate as an ingredient for a localization proof via multiscale analysis.

Harmonic functions on rank one asymptotically harmonic manifolds

Asymptotically harmonic manifolds are simply connected complete Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points such that all horospheres have the same constant mean curvature $h$. In this article we present results for harmonic functions on rank one asymptotically harmonic manifolds $X$ with mild curvature boundedness conditions. Our main results are (a) the explicit calculation of the Radon-Nykodym derivative of the visibility measures, (b) an explicit integral representation for the solution of the Dirichlet problem at infinity in terms of these visibility measures, and (c) a result on horospherical means of bounded eigenfunctions implying that these eigenfunctions do not admit non-trivial continuous extensions to the geometric compactification $\bar{X}$.

Noncompact asymptotically harmonic manifolds

In this article we consider asymptotically harmonic manifolds which are simply connected complete Riemannian manifolds without conjugate points such that all horospheres have the same constant mean curvature $h$. We prove the following equivalences for asymptotically harmonic manifolds $X$ under the additional assumption that their curvature tensor together with its covariant derivative are uniformly bounded: (a) $X$ has rank one; (b) $X$ has Anosov geodesic flow; (c) $X$ is Gromov hyperbolic; (d) $X$ has purely exponential volume growth with volume entropy equals $h$. This generalizes earlier results by G. Knieper for noncompact harmonic manifolds and by A. Zimmer for asymptotically harmonic manifolds admitting compact quotients.

Sectional curvature of polygonal complexes with planar substructures

In this paper we introduce a class of polygonal complexes for which we can define a notion of sectional combinatorial curvature. These complexes can be viewed as generalizations of 2-dimensional Euclidean and hyperbolic buildings. We focus on the case of non-positive and negative combinatorial curvature. As geometric results we obtain a Hadamard-Cartan type theorem, thinness of bigons, Gromov hyperbolicity and estimates for the Cheeger constant. We employ the latter to get spectral estimates, show discreteness of the spectrum in the sense of a Donnelly-Li type theorem and present corresponding eigenvalue asymptotics. Moreover, we prove a unique continuation theorem for eigenfunctions and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity.

Spectral representations of vertex transitive graphs, Archimedean solids and finite Coxeter groups

In this article, we study eigenvalue functions of varying transition probability matrices on finite, vertex transitive graphs. We prove that the eigenvalue function of an eigenvalue of fixed higher multiplicity has a critical point if and only if the corresponding spectral representation is equilateral. We also show how the geometric realisation of a finite Coxeter group as a reflection group can be used to obtain an explicit orthogonal system of eigenfunctions. Combining both results, we describe the behaviour of the spectral representations of the second highest eigenvalue function under the change of the transition probabilities in the case of Archimedean solids.

An infinite family of 2-groups with mixed Beauville structures

We construct an infinite family of triples $(G_k,H_k,T_k)$, where $G_k$ are 2-groups of increasing order, $H_k$ are index-2 subgroups of $G_k$, and $T_k$ are pairs of generators of $H_k$. We show that the triples $u_k = (G_k,H_k,T_k)$ are mixed Beauville structures if $k$ is not a power of 2. This is the first known infinite family of 2-groups admitting mixed Beauville structures. Moreover, the associated Beauville surface $S(u_3)$ is real and, for $k > 3$ not a power of 2, the Beauville surface $S(u_k)$ is not biholomorphic to $\bar{S(u_k)}$.

Noncompact harmonic manifolds

The Lichnerowicz conjecture asserts that all harmonic manifolds are either flat or locally symmetric spaces of rank 1. This conjecture has been proved by Z.I. Szabo for harmonic manifolds with compact universal cover. E. Damek and F. Ricci provided examples showing that in the noncompact case the conjecture is wrong. However, such manifolds do not admit a compact quotient. The classification of all noncompact harmonic spaces is still a very difficult open problem. In this paper we provide a survey on recent results on noncompact simply connected harmonic manifolds, and we also prove many new results, both for general noncompact harmonic manifolds and for noncompact harmonic manifolds with purely exponential volume growth.

Continuity of the integrated density of states on random length metric graphs

We establish several properties of the integrated density of states for random quantum graphs: Under appropriate ergodicity and amenability assumptions, the integrated density of states can be defined using an exhaustion procedure by compact subgraphs. A trace per unit volume formula holds, similarly as in the Euclidean case. Our setting includes periodic graphs. For a model where the edge length are random and vary independently in a smooth way we prove a Wegner estimate and related regularity results for the integrated density of states. These results are illustrated for an example based on the Kagome lattice. In the periodic case we characterise all compactly supported eigenfunctions and calculate the position and size of discontinuities of the integrated density of states.
