Bakry-Émery curvature on graphs as an eigenvalue problem

In this paper, we reformulate the Bakry-Émery curvature on a weighted graph in terms of the smallest eigenvalue of a rank one perturbation of the so-called curvature matrix using Schur complement. This new viewpoint allows us to show various curvature function properties in a very conceptual way. We show that the curvature, as a function of the dimension parameter, is analytic, strictly monotone increasing and strictly concave until a certain threshold after which the function is constant. Furthermore, we derive the curvature of the Cartesian product using the crucial observation that the curvature matrix of the product is the direct sum of each component. Our approach of the curvature functions of graphs can be employed to establish analogous results for the curvature functions of weighted Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, as an application, we confirm a conjecture (in a general weighted case) of the fact that the curvature does not decrease under certain graph modifications.

Lin-Lu-Yau curvature and diameter of amply regular graphs

By Hall's marriage theorem, we study lower bounds of the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature of amply regular graphs with girth $3$ or $4$ under different parameter restrictions. As a consequence, we show that each conference graph has positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. Our approach also provides a geometric proof of a classical diameter estimate for amply regular graphs in the case of girth $4$ and some special cases of girth $3$.

A note on eigenvalue bounds for non-compact manifolds

In this article we prove upper bounds for the Laplace eigenvalues $λ_k$ below the essential spectrum for strictly negatively curved Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Our bound is given in terms of $k^2$ and specific geometric data of the manifold. This applies also to the particular case of non-compact manifolds whose sectional curvature tends to $-\infty$, where no essential spectrum is present due to a theorem of Donnelly/Li. The result stands in clear contrast to Laplacians on graphs where such a bound fails to be true in general.

Almost split sequences in tri-exact categories

We shall study the existence of almost split sequences in tri-exact categories, that is, extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. Our results unify and extend the existence theorems for almost split sequences in abelian categories and exact categories (that is, extension-closed subcategories of abelian categories), and those for almost split triangles in triangulated categories. As applications, we shall obtain some new results on the existence of almost split sequences in the derived categories of all modules over an algebra with a unity or a locally finite dimensional algebra given by a quiver with relations.

The bounded derived categories of an algebra with radical squared zero

Let $\La$ be an elementary locally bounded linear category over a field with radical squared zero. We shall show that the bounded derived category $D^b(\ModbLa)$ of finitely supported left $\La$-modules admits a Galois covering which is the bounded derived category of almost finitely co-presented representations of a gradable quiver. Restricting to the bounded derived category $D^b({\rm mod}^b\hspace{-2pt}\La)$ of finite dimensional left $\La$-modules, we shall be able to describe its indecomposable objects, obtain a complete description of the shapes of its Auslander-Reiten components, and classify those $\La$ such that $D^b({\rm mod}^b\hspace{-2.3pt}\La)$ has only finitely many Auslander-Reiten components.

Cluster categories of type $\mathbb{A}_\infty^\infty$ and triangulations of the infinite strip

We first study the (canonical) orbit category of the bounded derived category of finite dimensional representations of a quiver with no infinite path, and we pay more attention on the case where the quiver is of infinite Dynkin type. In particular, its Auslander-Reiten components are explicitly described. When the quiver is of type $\mathbb{A}_\infty$ or $\mathbb{A}_\infty^\infty$, we show that this orbit category is a cluster category, that is, its cluster-tilting subcategories form a cluster structure. When the quiver is of type $\mathbb{A}_\infty^\infty$, we shall give a geometrical description of the cluster structure of the cluster category by using triangulations of the infinite strip in the plane. In particular, we shall show that the cluster-tilting subcategories are precisely given by compact triangulations.

An optimal dimension-free upper bound for eigenvalue ratios

On a closed weighted Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature, it is shown that the ratio of the $k$-th to first eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian is dominated by $641k^2$, using an argument via the Cheeger constant. While improving the previous exponential upper bound, the order of $k$ here is optimal, and hence answers an open question of Funano. This approach works still on a compact finite-dimensional Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature and proves affirmatively a conjecture of Funano and Shioya asserting a dimension free upper bound for eigenvalue ratios in that setting.

Multi-way dual Cheeger constants and spectral bounds of graphs

We introduce a set of multi-way dual Cheeger constants and prove universal higher-order dual Cheeger inequalities for eigenvalues of normalized Laplace operators on weighted finite graphs. Our proof proposes a new spectral clustering phenomenon deduced from metrics on real projective spaces. We further extend those results to a general reversible Markov operator and find applications in characterizing its essential spectrum.

Optimal Transport in Worldwide Metro Networks

Metro networks serve as good examples of traffic systems for understanding the relations between geometric structures and transport properties. We study and compare 28 world major metro networks in terms of the Wasserstein distance, the key metric for optimal transport, and measures geometry related, e.g. fractal dimension, graph energy and graph spectral distance. The finding of power-law relationships between rescaled graph energy and fractal dimension for both unweighted and weighted metro networks indicates the energy costs per unit area are lower for higher dimensioned metros. In L space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of connected stations is proportional to the fractal dimension, which is in the vicinity of our theoretical calculations treated on special regular tree graphs. This finding reveals the geometry of metro networks and tree graphs are in close proximity to one another. In P space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of stations relates closely to the average number of transfers. By ranking several key quantities transport concerned, we obtain several ranking lists in which New York metro and Berlin metro consistently top the first two spots.

Geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative curvature

In the present paper, we apply Alexandrov geometry methods to study geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative combinatorial curvature in the sense of Higuchi. We obtain the metric classification of these graphs and construct the graphs embedded in the projective plane minus one point. Moreover, we show the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality on such graphs. The quadratic volume growth of these graphs implies the parabolicity. In addition, we prove the polynomial growth harmonic function theorem analogous to the case of Riemannian manifolds.

Ollivier-Ricci curvature and the spectrum of the normalized graph Laplace operator

We prove the following estimate for the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator $Δ$ on a finite graph $G$, \begin{equation*}1- (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}\leq λ_1 \leq \cdots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 1+ (1- k[t])^{\frac{1}{t}}, \,\forall \,\,\text{integers}\,\, t\geq 1. \end{equation*} Here $k[t]$ is a lower bound for the Ollivier-Ricci curvature on the neighborhood graph $G[t]$, which was introduced by Bauer-Jost. In particular, when $t=1$ this is Ollivier's estimates $k\leq λ_1\leq \ldots \leq λ_{N-1}\leq 2-k$. For sufficiently large $t$ we show that, unless $G$ is bipartite, our estimates for $λ_1$ and $λ_{N-1}$ are always nontrivial and improve Ollivier's estimates for all graphs with $k\leq 0$. By definition neighborhood graphs are weighted graphs which may have loops. To understand the Ollivier-Ricci curvature on neighborhood graphs, we generalize a sharp estimate of the Ricci curvature given by Jost-Liu to weighted graphs with loops and relate it to the relative local frequency of triangles and loops.

Ollivier's Ricci curvature, local clustering and curvature dimension inequalities on graphs

In this paper, we explore the relationship between one of the most elementary and important properties of graphs, the presence and relative frequency of triangles, and a combinatorial notion of Ricci curvature. We employ a definition of generalized Ricci curvature proposed by Ollivier in a general framework of Markov processes and metric spaces and applied in graph theory by Lin-Yau. In analogy with curvature notions in Riemannian geometry, we interpret this Ricci curvature as a control on the amount of overlap between neighborhoods of two neighboring vertices. It is therefore naturally related to the presence of triangles containing those vertices, or more precisely, the local clustering coefficient, that is, the relative proportion of connected neighbors among all the neighbors of a vertex. This suggests to derive lower Ricci curvature bounds on graphs in terms of such local clustering coefficients. We also study curvature dimension inequalities on graphs, building upon previous work of several authors.

Almost split sequences and approximations

Let A be an exact category, that is, an extension-closed full subcategory of an abelian category. Firstly, we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for A to have almost split sequences. Then, we study when an almost split sequence in A induces an almost split sequence in an exact subcategory C of A. In case A has almost split sequences and C is Hom-finite Krull-Schmidt, this provides a necessary and sufficient condition for C to have almost split sequences. Finally, we show two applications of these results.

Standard components of a Krull-Schmidt category

We provide criteria for an Auslander-Reiten component having sections of a Krull-Schmidt category to be standard. Specializing to the category of finitely presented representations of a strongly locally finite quiver and its bounded derived category, we obtain many new types of standard Auslander-Reiten components. An application to the module category of a finite-dimensional algebra yields some interesting results.

Representation Theory of an Infinite Quiver

This paper deals with the representation theory of a locally finite quiver in which the number of paths between any two given vertices is finite. We first study some properties of the finitely presented or co-presented representations, and then construct in the category of locally finite dimensional representations some almost split sequences which start with a finitely co-presented representation and end with a finitely presented representation. Furthermore, we obtain a general description of the shapes of the Auslander-Reiten components of the category of finitely presented representations and prove that the number of regular Auslander-Reiten components is infinite if and only if the quiver is not of finite or infinite Dynkin type. In the infinite Dynkin case, we shall give a complete list of the indecomposable representations and an explicit description of the Auslander-Reiten components. Finally, we apply these results to study the Auslander-Reiten theory in the derived category of bounded complexes of finitely presented representations.
