Relating moments of self-adjoint polynomials in two orthogonal projections

Given two orthogonal projections $\{P,Q\}$ in a non commutative tracial probability space, we prove relations between the moments of $P+Q$, of $\sqrt{-1}(PQ-QP)$ and of $P+QPQ$ and those of the angle operator $PQP$. Our proofs are purely algebraic and enumerative and does not assume $P,Q$ satisfying Voiculescu's freeness property or being in general position. As far as the sum and the commutator are concerned, the obtained relations follow from binomial-type formulas satisfied by the orthogonal symmetries associated to $P$ and $Q$ together with the trace property. In this respect, they extend those corresponding to the cases where one of the two projections is rotated by a free Haar unitary operator or more generally by a free unitary Brownian motion. As to the operator $P+QPQ$, we derive autonomous recurrence relations for the coefficients (double sequence) of the expansion of its moments as linear combinations of those of $PQP$ and determine explicitly few of them. These relations are obtained after a careful analysis of the structure of words in the alphabet $\{P, QPQ\}$. We close the paper by exploring the connection of our previous results to the so-called Kato's dual pair. Doing so leads to new identities satisfied by their moments.

Closed-Form Expressions of Ergodic Capacity and MMSE Achievable Sum Rate for MIMO Jacobi and Rayleigh Fading Channels

Multimode/multicore fibers are expected to provide an attractive solution to overcome the capacity limit of the current optical communication system. In the presence of high cross-talk between modes/cores, the squared singular values of the input/output transfer matrix follow the law of the Jacobi ensemble of random matrices. Assuming that the channel state information is only available at the receiver, we derive a new expression for the ergodic capacity of the MIMO Jacobi fading channel. This expression involves double integrals which can be evaluated easily and efficiently. Moreover, the method used in deriving this expression does not appeal to the classical one-point correlation function of the random matrix model. Using a limiting transition between Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials, we derive a similar formula for the ergodic capacity of the MIMO Rayleigh fading channel. Moreover, we derive a new exact closed form expressions for the achievable sum rate of MIMO Jacobi and Rayleigh fading channels employing linear minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers. The analytical results are compared to the results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and the related results available in the literature, which shows perfect agreement.

Generalized Bessel functions of dihedral-type: expression as a series of confluent Horn functions and Laplace-type integral representation

In the first part of this paper, we express the generalized Bessel function associated with dihedral systems and a constant multiplicity function as a infinite series of confluent Horn functions. The key ingredient leading to this expression is an extension of an identity involving Gegenbauer polynomials proved in a previous paper by the authors, together with the use of the Poisson kernel for these polynomials. In particular, we derive an integral representation of this generalized Bessel function over the standard simplex. The second part of this paper is concerned with even dihedral systems and boundary values of one of the variables. Still assuming that the multiplicity function is constant, we obtain a Laplace-type integral representation of the corresponding generalized Bessel function, which extends to all even dihedral systems a special instance of the Laplace-type integral representation proved in \cite{Amr-Dem}.

Schur-Weyl duality and the Product of randomly-rotated symmetries by a unitary Brownian motion

In this paper, we introduce and study a unitary matrix-valued process which is closely related to the Hermitian matrix-Jacobi process. It is precisely defined as the product of a deterministic self-adjoint symmetry and a randomly-rotated one by a unitary Brownian motion. Using stochastic calculus and the action of the symmetric group on tensor powers, we derive an autonomous ordinary differential equation for the moments of its fixed-time marginals. Next, we derive an expression of these moments which involves a unitary bridge between our unitary process and another independent unitary Brownian motion. This bridge motivates and allows to write a second direct proof of the obtained moment expression.

The Hermitian Jacobi process: simplified formula for the moments and application to optical fibers MIMO channels

Using a change of basis in the algebra of symmetric functions, we compute the moments of the Hermitian Jacobi process. After a careful arrangement of the terms and the evaluation of the determinant of an `almost upper-triangular' matrix, we end up with a moment formula which is considerably simpler than the one derived in \cite{Del-Dem}. As an application, we propose the Hermitian Jacobi process as a dynamical model for optical fibers MIMO channels and compute its Shannon capacity for small enough power at the transmitter. Moreover, when the size of the Hermitian Jacobi process is larger than the moment order, our moment formula may be written as a linear combination of balanced terminating ${}_4F_3$-series evaluated at unit argument.

Analysis of generalized negative binomial distributions attached to hyperbolic Landau levels

To each hyperbolic Landau level of the Poincaré disc is attached a generalized negative binomial distribution. In this paper, we compute the moment generating function of this distribution and supply its decomposition as a perturbation of the negative binomial distribution by a finitely-supported measure. Using the Mandel parameter, we also discuss the nonclassical nature of the associated coherent states. Next, we determine the Lévy-Kintchine decomposition its characteristic function when the latter does not vanish and deduce that it is quasi-infinitely divisible except for the lowest hyperbolic Landau level corresponding to the negative binomial distribution. By considering the total variation of the obtained quasi-Lévy measure, we introduce a new infinitely-divisible distribution for which we derive the characteristic function.

Berezin transforms attached to Landau levels on the complex projective space CPn

In this paper, we construct coherent states for each generalized Bergman space on the n-dimensional complex projective space in order to apply a coherent states quantization method. Doing so allows to define the Berezin transform for these spaces. In particular, we provide a variational formula for this transform by means of the Fubini-Study Laplace operator which reduces when n = 1 and for the lowest spherical Landau level to the well-known formula previously given by Berezin himself.

First hitting time of the boundary of a wedge of angle $π/4$ by a radial Dunkl process

In this paper, we derive an integral representation for the density of the reciprocal of the first hitting time of the boundary of a wedge of angle $π/4$ by a radial Dunkl process with equal multiplicity values. Not only this representation readily yields the non negativity of the density, but also provides an analogue of Dufresne's result on the distribution of the first hitting time of zero by a Bessel process and a generalization of the Vakeroudis-Yor's identity satisfied by the first exit time from a wedge by a planar Brownian motion. We also use a result due to Spitzer on the angular part of the planar Brownian motion to prove a representation of the tail distribution of its first exit time from a dihedral wedge through the square wave function.

Generalized Stieltjes Transforms of Compactly-Supported Probability Distributions: Further Examples

For two families of beta distributions, we show that the generalized Stieltjes transforms of their elements may be written as elementary functions (powers and fractions) of the Stieltjes transform of the Wigner distribution. In particular, we retrieve the examples given by the author in a previous paper and relating generalized Stieltjes transforms of special beta distributions to powers of (ordinary) Stieltjes ones. We also provide further examples of similar relations which are motivated by the representation theory of symmetric groups. Remarkably, the power of the Stieltjes transform of the symmetric Bernoulli distribution is a generalized Stietljes transform of a probability distribution if and only if the power is greater than one. As to the free Poisson distribution, it corresponds to the product of two independent Beta distributions in $[0,1]$ while another example of Beta distributions in $[-1,1]$ is found and is related with the Shrinkage process. We close the exposition by considering the generalized Stieltjes transform of a linear functional related with Humbert polynomials and generalizing the symmetric Beta distribution.

Inverse of the flow and moments of the free Jacobi process associated with a single projection

This paper is a companion to a series of papers devoted to the study of the spectral distribution of the free Jacobi process associated with a single projection. Actually, we notice that the flow solves a radial Löwner equation and as such, the general theory of Löwner equations implies that it is univalent in some connected region in the open unit disc. We also prove that its inverse defines the Aleksandrov-Clark measure at $z=1$ of some Herglotz function which is absolutely-continuous with an essentially bounded density. As a by-product, we deduce that $z=1$ belongs only to the discrete spectrum of the unitary operator whose spectral dynamics are governed by the flow. Moreover, we use a previous result due to the first author in order to derive an explicit, yet complicated, expression of the moments of both the unitary and the free Jacobi processes. The paper is closed with some remarks on the boundary behavior of the flow's inverse.

Lagrange inversion formula, Laguerre polynomials and the free unitary Brownian motion

This paper is devoted to the computations of some relevant quantities associated with the free unitary Brownian motion. Using the Lagrange inversion formula, we first derive an explicit expression for its alternating star cumulants of even lengths and relate them to those having odd lengths by means of a summation formula for the free cumulants with product as entries. Next, we use again this formula together with a generating series for Laguerre polynomials in order to compute the Taylor coefficients of the reciprocal of the $R$-transform of the free Jacobi process associated with a single projection of rank $1/2$ and those of the $S$-transform as well. This generating series lead also to the Taylor expansions of the Schur function of the spectral distribution of the free unitary Brownian motion and of its first iterate.

Laplace-type integral representations of the generalized Bessel function and of the Dunkl kernel of type $B_2$

In this paper, we derive a Laplace-type integral representations for both the generalized Bessel function and the Dunkl kernel associated with the rank-two root system of type B_2. The derivation of the first one elaborates on the integral representation of the generalized Bessel function proved in \cite{Demni} through the modified Bessel function of the first kind. In particular, we recover an expression of the density of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure for the dihedral group of order eight. As to the integral representation of the corresponding Dunkl kernel, it follows from an application of the shift principle to the generalized Bessel function.

Analysis of generalized probability distributions associated with higher Landau levels

To a higher Landau Level corresponds a generalization of the Poisson distribution arising from generalized coherent states. In this paper, we write down the atomic decomposition of this probability measure and expressed its weights through 2F2 hypergeometric polynomials. Then, we prove that it is not infinitely divisible in opposite to the Poisson distribution corresponding to the lowest Landau level. We also derive the Levy-Kintchine representation of its characteristic function when the latter does not vanish and deduce that the representative measure is signed. By considering the total variation of the last measure, we obtain the characteristic function of a new infinitely divisible discrete probability distribution for which we compute also the weights.

Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral group

In this paper, we pursue the investigations started in \cite{Mas-You} where the authors provide a construction of the Dunkl intertwining operator for a large subset of the set of regular multiplicity values. More precisely, we make concrete the action of this operator on homogeneous polynomials when the root system is of dihedral type and under a mild assumption on the multiplicity function. In particular, we obtain a formula for the corresponding Dunkl kernel and another representation of the generalized Bessel function already derived in \cite{Demni0}. When the multiplicity function is everywhere constant, our computations give a solution to the problem of counting the number of decompositions of an element from a dihedral group into a fixed number of (non necessarily simple) reflections. In the remainder of the paper, we supply another method to derive the Dunkl kernel associated with dihedral systems from the corresponding generalized Bessel function. This time, we use the shift principle together with multiple combinations of Dunkl operators corresponding to the vectors of the canonical basis of $\mathbb{R}^2$. When the dihedral system is of order six and only in this case, a single combination suffices to get the Dunkl kernel and agrees up to an isomorphism with the formula recently obtained by Amri \cite[Lemma1]{Amri} in the case of a root system of type $A_2$. We finally derive an integral representation for the Dunkl kernel associated with the dihedral system of order eight.

Free Jacobi process associated with one projection: local inverse of the flow

We pursue the study started in \cite{Dem-Hmi} of the dynamics of the spectral distribution of the free Jacobi process associated with one orthogonal projection. More precisely, we use Lagrange inversion formula in order to compute the Taylor coefficients of the local inverse around $z=0$ of the flow determined in \cite{Dem-Hmi}. When the rank of the projection equals $1/2$, the obtained sequence reduces to the moment sequence of the free unitary Brownian motion. For general ranks in $(0,1)$, we derive a contour integral representation for the first derivative of the Taylor series which is a major step toward the analytic extension of the flow in the open unit disc.

Star-cumulants of free unitary Brownian motion

We study joint free cumulants of u_t and u_t^{*}, where u_t is a free unitary Brownian motion at time t. We determine explicitly some special families of such cumulants. On the other hand, for a general joint cumulant of u_t and u_t^{*}, we "calculate the derivative" for t going to infinity, when u_t approaches a Haar unitary. In connection to the latter calculation we put into evidence an "infinitesimal determining sequence" which naturally accompanies an arbitrary R-diagonal element in a tracial *-probability space.

A stationary process associated with the Dirichlet distribution arising from the complex projective space

Let $(U_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be a Brownian motion valued in the complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$. Using unitary spherical harmonics of homogeneous degree zero, we derive the densities of $|U_t^{1}|^2$ and of $(|U_t^{1}|^2, |U_t^2|^2)$, and express them through Jacobi polynomials in the simplices of $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{R}^2$ respectively. More generally, the distribution of $(|U_t^{1}|^2, \dots, |U_t^k|^2), 2 \leq k \leq N-1$ may be derived using the decomposition of the unitary spherical harmonics under the action of the unitary group $\mathcal{U}(N-k+1)$ yet computations become tedious. We also revisit the approach initiated in \cite{Nec-Pel} and based on a partial differential equation (hereafter pde) satisfied by the Laplace transform of the density. When $k=1$, we invert the Laplace transform and retrieve the expression derived using spherical harmonics. For general $1 \leq k \leq N-2$, the integrations by parts performed on the pde lead to a heat equation in the simplex of $\mathbb{R}^k$.

General position of a projection and its image under a free unitary Brownian motion

Given an orthogonal projection $P$ and a free unitary Brownian motion $Y = (Y_t)_{t \geq 0}$ in a $W^{\star}$-non commutative probability space such that $Y$ and $P$ are $\star$-free in Voiculescu's sense, the main result of this paper states that $P$ and $Y_tPY_t^{\star}$ are in general position at any time $t$. To this end, we study the dynamics of the unitary operator $SY_tSY_t^{\star}$ where $S = 2P-1$. More precisely, we derive a partial differential equation for the Herglotz transform of its spectral distribution, say $μ_t$. Then, we provide a flow on the interval $[-1,1]$ in such a way that the Herglotz transform of $μ_t$ composed with this flow is governed by both the Herglotz transforms of the initial ($t=0$) and the stationary ($t = \infty)$ distributions. This fact allows to compute the weight that $μ_t$ assigns to $z=1$ leading to the main result. As a by-product, the weight that the spectral distribution of the free Jacobi process assigns to $x=1$ follows after a normalization. In the last part of the paper, we use combinatorics of non crossing partitions in order to analyze the term corresponding to the exponential decay $e^{-nt}$ in the expansion of the $n$-th moment of $SY_tSY_t^{\star}$.

A probabilistic proof of product formulas for spherical Bessel functions and their matrix analogues

We write, for geometric index values, a probabilistic proof of the product formula for spherical Bessel functions. Our proof has the merit to carry over without any further effort to Bessel-type hypergeometric functions of one matrix argument. Moreover, the representative probability distribution involved in the matrix setting is shown to be closely related to matrix-variate normal distributions and to the symmetrization of upper-left corners of Haar distributed orthogonal matrices. Once we did, we use the latter relation to perform a detailed analysis of this probability distribution. In case it is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on the space of real symmetric matrices, the product formula for Bessel-type hypergeometric functions of two matrix arguments is obtained from Weyl integration formula.

Note on radial Dunkl processes

We give shorter proofs of the following known results: the radial Dunkl process associated with a reduced system and a strictly positive multiplicity function is the unique strong solution for all times of a stochastic differential equation with a singular drift, the first hitting time of the Weyl chamber by a radial Dunkl process is finite almost surely for small values of the multiplicity function. Compared to the original proofs, ours give more information on the behavior of the process. More precisely, the first proof allows to give a positive answer to a conjecture announced by Gallardo and Yor for the finiteness of the total length of the jumps performed by the Dunkl process during a finite amount of time, while the second one shows that the process hits almost surely the wall corresponding to the simple root with a small multiplicity value. Further results on the jumps of the Dunkl process (communicated by D. Lépingle) and and additional references are included.

On the spectral distribution of the free Jacobi process

In this paper, we are interested in the free Jacobi process starting at the unit of the compressed probability space where it takes values and associated with the parameter values $λ=1, θ=1/2$. Firstly, we derive a time-dependent recurrence equation for the moments of the process (valid for any starting point and all parameter values). Secondly, we transform this equation to a nonlinear partial differential one for the moment generating function that we solve when $λ= 1, θ=1/2$. The obtained solution together with tricky computations lead to an explicit expression of the moments which shows that the free Jacobi process is distributed at any time $t$ as $(1/4)(2+Y_{2t}+Y_{2t}^{\star})$ where $Y$ is a free unitary Brownian motion. This expression is recovered relying on enumeration techniques after proving that if $a$ is a symmetric Bernoulli random variable which is free from $\{Y, Y^{\star}\}$, then the distributions of $Y_{2t}$ and that of $aY_taY_t^{\star}$ coincide. We close the exposition by investigating the spectral distribution associated with general sets of parameter values.

Radon Transform on spheres and generalized Bessel function associated with dihedral groups

Motivated by Dunkl operators theory, we consider a generating series involving a modified Bessel function and a Gegenbauer polynomial, that generalizes a known series already considered by L. Gegenbauer. We actually use inversion formulas for Fourier and Radon transforms to derive a closed formula for this series when the parameter of the Gegenbauer polynomial is a strictly positive integer. As a by-product, we get a relatively simple integral representation for the generalized Bessel function associated with even dihedral groups when both multiplicities sum to an integer. In particular, we recover a previous result obtained for the square symmetries-preserving group and we give a special interest to the hexagon. The paper is closed with adapting our method to odd dihedral groups thereby exhausting the list of Weyl dihedral groups.

Brownian motion, reflection groups and Tanaka formula

In the setting of finite reflection groups, we prove that the projection of a Brownian motion onto a closed Weyl chamber is another Brownian motion normally reflected on the walls of the chamber. Our proof is probabilistic and the decomposition we obtain may be seen as a multidimensional extension of Tanaka's formula for linear Brownian motion. The paper is closed with a description of the boundary process through the local times at zero of the distances from the initial process to the facets.

On classical and free stable laws

We derive the representative Bernstein measure of the density of $(X_α)^{-α/(1-α)}, 0 < α< 1$, where $X_α$ is a positive stable random variable, as a Fox-H function. When $1-α= 1/j$ for some integer $j \geq 2$, the Fox H-function reduces to a Meijer G-function so that the Kanter's random variable (see below) is closely related to a product of $(j-1)$ independent Beta random variables. When $α$ tends to 0, the Bernstein measure becomes degenerate thereby agrees with Cressie's result for the asymptotic behaviour of stable distributions for small values of $α$. Coming to free probability, our result makes more explicit that of Biane on the density of its free analog. The paper is closed with analytic arguments explaining the occurence of the Kanter's random variable in both the classical and the free settings.

Spectral distribution of the free unitary Brownian motion: another approach

We revisit the description provided by Ph. Biane of the spectral measure of the free unitary Brownian motion. We actually construct for any $t \in (0,4)$ a Jordan curve $γ_t$ around the origin, not intersecting the semi-axis $[1,\infty[$ and whose image under some meromorphic function $h_t$ lies in the circle. Our construction is naturally suggested by a residue-type integral representation of the moments and $h_t$ is up to a Möbius transformation the main ingredient used in the original proof. Once we did, the spectral measure is described as the push-forward of a complex measure under a local diffeomorphism yielding its absolute-continuity and its support. Our approach has the merit to be an easy yet technical exercise from real analysis.
