GPS-Synchronized Monitoring of Core-collapse Supernova Bursts with PandaX-4T via Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nuclear Scattering

The landmark detection of neutrinos from SN1987A marked the dawn of neutrino astrophysics. The neutrino burst provided essential insights into fundamental properties of neutrinos, and served as key probes of stellar evolution and supernova dynamics. The recent advancement in coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering enables the detection of core-collapse supernova burst neutrinos using tonne-scale liquid xenon detectors originally designed for dark matter direct detection. Leveraging this capability, we developed and deployed an online supernova monitoring system for the PandaX-4T experiment. This system features a GPS module with millisecond-level timing precision, a low false-alarm rate, and high sensitivity to galactic core-collapse supernova explosion events. The methodology is robust, directly scalable, and planned for implementation in the next-generation PandaX-20T experiment.

A First Search for Solar $^8$B Neutrino in the PandaX-4T Experiment using Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering

A search for interactions from solar $^8$B neutrinos elastically scattering off xenon nuclei using PandaX-4T commissioning data is reported. The energy threshold of this search is further lowered compared with the previous search for dark matter, with various techniques utilized to suppress the background that emerges from data with the lowered threshold. A blind analysis is performed on the data with an effective exposure of 0.48 tonne$\cdot$year, and no significant excess of events is observed. Among results obtained using the neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering, our results give the best constraint on the solar $^8$B neutrino flux. We further provide a more stringent limit on the cross section between dark matter and nucleon in the mass range from 3 to 9 GeV/c$^2$.

$\rm ^{83}Rb$/$\rm ^{83m}Kr$ production and cross-section measurement with 3.4 MeV and 20 MeV proton beams

$\rm ^{83m}Kr$, with a short lifetime, is an ideal calibration source for liquid xenon or liquid argon detectors. The $\rm ^{83m}Kr$ isomer can be generated through the decay of $\rm ^{83} Rb$ isotope which is usually produced by proton beams bombarding natural krypton atoms. In this paper, we report a successful production of $\rm ^{83}Rb/^{83m}Kr$ with a proton beam energy of 3.4 MeV, and the first measurement of the production rate with such low energy proton beams. Another production attempt is performed using the newly available 20 MeV proton beam in China, and the measured production rate is consistent with previous measurements. The produced $\rm ^{83m}Kr$ source has been successfully injected into the PandaX-II liquid xenon detector, yielding enough statistics for detector calibration.

A Search for the Cosmic Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Dark Matter at the PandaX-II Experiment

We report a novel search for the cosmic ray boosted dark matter using the 100~tonne$\cdot$day full data set of the PandaX-II detector located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. With the extra energy gained from the cosmic rays, sub-GeV dark matter particles can produce visible recoil signals in the detector. The diurnal modulations in rate and energy spectrum are utilized to further enhance the signal sensitivity. Our result excludes the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10$^{-31}$cm$^{2}$ and 10$^{-28}$cm$^{2}$ for a dark matter masses from 0.1 MeV/$c^2$ to 0.1 GeV/$c^2$, with a large parameter space previously unexplored by experimental collaborations.

A search for two-component Majorana dark matter in a simplified model using the full exposure data of PandaX-II experiment

In the two-component Majorana dark matter model, one dark matter particle can scatter off the target nuclei, and turn into a slightly heavier component. In the framework of a simplified model with a vector boson mediator, both the tree-level and loop-level processes contribute to the signal in direct detection experiment. In this paper, we report the search results for such dark matter from PandaX-II experiment, using total data of the full 100.7 tonne$\cdot$day exposure. No significant excess is observed, so strong constraints on the combined parameter space of mediator mass and dark matter mass are derived. With the complementary search results from collider experiments, a large range of parameter space can be excluded.

A weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type trace inequality on Riemannian manifolds

Given $(M, g)$ a smooth compact $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary $\partial M$. Let $ρ$ be a defining function of $M$ and $σ\in(0,1)$. In this paper we study a weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type trace inequality corresponding to the embedding of $W^{1,2}(ρ^{1-2 σ}, M) \hookrightarrow L^{p}(\partial M)$, where $p=\frac{2 n}{n-2 σ}$. More precisely, under some assumptions on the manifold, we prove that there exists a constant $B>0$ such that, for all $u \in W^{1,2}(ρ^{1-2σ}, M)$, $$ \Big(\int_{\partial M}|u|^{p} \,\ud s_{g}\Big)^{2/p} \leq μ^{-1} \int_{M} ρ^{1-2 σ}|\nabla_{g} u|^{2} \,\ud v_{g}+B \Big|\int_{\partial M} |u|^{p-2}u \,\ud s_{g}\Big|^{2/(p-1)}. $$ This inequality is sharp in the sense that $μ^{-1}$ cannot be replaced by any smaller constant. Moreover, unlike the classical Sobolev inequality, $μ^{-1}$ does not depend on $n$ and $σ$ only, but depends on the manifold.

Compactness and existence results of the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem on $\mathbb{S}^n$

This paper is devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem of order $2σ$ on $n$-dimensional standard sphere when $ n-2σ=2$, $σ=1+m/2,$ $m\in \mathbb{N}_{+}.$ The compactness results are novel and optimal. In addition, we prove a degree-counting formula of all solutions to achieve the existence. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Furthermore, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at any finite distinct location can be constructed. It is worth noting that our results include the case of multiple harmonic.

Low Radioactive Material Screening and Background Control for the PandaX-4T Experiment

PandaX-4T is a ton-scale dark matter direct detection experiment using a dual-phase TPC technique at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Various ultra-low background technologies have been developed and applied to material screening for PandaX-4T, including HPGe gamma spectroscopy, ICP-MS, NAA, radon emanation measurement system, krypton assay station, and alpha detection system. Low background materials were selected to assemble the detector. Surface treatment procedures were investigated to further suppress radioactive background. Combining measured results and Monte Carlo simulation, the total material background rates of PandaX-4T in the energy region of 1-25 keV$\rm{}_{ee}$ are estimated to be (9.9 $\pm$ 1.9) $\times \ 10^{-3}$ mDRU for electron recoil and (2.8 $\pm$ 0.6) $\times \ 10^{-4}$ mDRU for nuclear recoil. In addition, $^{nat}$Kr in the detector is estimated to be <8 ppt.

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background in the PandaX-4T experiment

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background is critical to the dark matter searches in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. This paper studies the feature of neutron background in liquid xenon and evaluates their contribution in the single scattering nuclear recoil events through three methods. The first method is fully Monte Carlo simulation based. The last two are data-driven methods that also use the multiple scattering signals and high energy signals in the data, respectively. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data with an exposure of 0.63 tonne-year, all these methods give a consistent result that there are $1.15\pm0.57$ neutron-induced background in dark matter signal region within an approximated nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV.

On a Fractional Nirenberg problem involving the square root of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$

In this paper, we are devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the fractional Nirenberg problem for $n=3,$ $σ=1/2,$ when the prescribing $σ$-curvature function satisfies the $(n-2σ)$-flatness condition near its critical points. The compactness results are new and optimal. In addition, we obtain a degree-counting formula of all solutions. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Moreover, for any finite distinct points, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at these points can be constructed. We extend the results of Li in \cite[CPAM, 1996]{LYY} from the local problem to nonlocal cases.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Puzzling Excesses in Dark Matter Searches and How to Resolve Them

Intriguing signals with excesses over expected backgrounds have been observed in many astrophysical and terrestrial settings, which could potentially have a dark matter origin. Astrophysical excesses include the Galactic Center GeV gamma-ray excess detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, the AMS antiproton and positron excesses, and the 511 and 3.5 keV X-ray lines. Direct detection excesses include the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal, the XENON1T excess, and low-threshold excesses in solid state detectors. We discuss avenues to resolve these excesses, with actions the field can take over the next several years.

Study of background from accidental coincidence signals in the PandaX-II experiment

The PandaX-II experiment employed a 580kg liquid xenon detector to search for the interactions between dark matter particles and the target xenon atoms. The accidental coincidences of isolated signals result in a dangerous background which mimic the signature of the dark matter. We performed a detailed study on the accidental coincidence background in PandaX-II, including the possible origin of the isolated signals, the background level and corresponding background suppression method. With a boosted-decision-tree algorithm, the accidental coincidence background is reduced by 70% in the dark matter signal region, thus the sensitivity of dark matter search at PandaX-II is improved.

Dark Matter Search Results from the PandaX-4T Commissioning Run

We report the first dark matter search results using the commissioning data from PandaX-4T. Using a time projection chamber with 3.7-tonne of liquid xenon target and an exposure of 0.63 tonne$\cdot$year, 1058 candidate events are identified within an approximate nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV. No significant excess over background is observed. Our data set a stringent limit to the dark matter-nucleon spin-independent interactions, with a lowest excluded cross section (90% C.L.) of $3.8\times10^{-47} $cm$^2$ at a dark matter mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Light yield and field dependence measurement in PandaX-II dual-phase xenon detector

The dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) is one of the most sensitive detector technology for dark matter direct search, where the energy deposition of incoming particle can be converted into photons and electrons through xenon excitation and ionization. The detector response to signal energy deposition varies significantly with the electric field in liquid xenon. We study the detector's light yield and its dependence on the electric field in the PandaX-II dual-phase detector containing 580~kg liquid xenon in the sensitive volume. From our measurements, the light yield at electric fields from 0~V/cm to 317~V/cm is obtained for energy depositions up to 236~keV.

No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

Ubiquitous proximity to a critical state for collective neural activity in the CA1 region of freely moving mice

Using miniscope recordings of calcium fluorescence signals in the CA1 region of the hippocampus of mice, we monitor the neural activity of hippocampal regions while the animals are freely moving in an open chamber. Using a data-driven statistical modeling approach, the statistical properties of the recorded data are mapped to spin-glass models with pairwise interactions. Considering the parameter space of the model, the observed system is generally near a critical state between two distinct phases. The close proximity to the criticality is found to be robust against different ways of sampling and segmentation of the measured data. By independently altering the coupling distribution and the network structure of the statistical model, the network structures are found to be vital to maintain the proximity to the critical state. We further find the observed assignment of the coupling strengths makes the net coupling at each site more balanced with slight variation, which likely helps the maintenance of the critical state. Network analysis on the connectivity obtained by thresholding the coupling strengths find the connectivity of the networks to be well described by a random network model. These results are consistent across different experiments, sampling and segmentation choices in our analysis.

Adaptive Fractional Dilated Convolution Network for Image Aesthetics Assessment

To leverage deep learning for image aesthetics assessment, one critical but unsolved issue is how to seamlessly incorporate the information of image aspect ratios to learn more robust models. In this paper, an adaptive fractional dilated convolution (AFDC), which is aspect-ratio-embedded, composition-preserving and parameter-free, is developed to tackle this issue natively in convolutional kernel level. Specifically, the fractional dilated kernel is adaptively constructed according to the image aspect ratios, where the interpolation of nearest two integers dilated kernels is used to cope with the misalignment of fractional sampling. Moreover, we provide a concise formulation for mini-batch training and utilize a grouping strategy to reduce computational overhead. As a result, it can be easily implemented by common deep learning libraries and plugged into popular CNN architectures in a computation-efficient manner. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on image aesthetics assessment over the AVA dataset.

Distributed Formation Control of Multi-Robot Systems: A Fixed-Time Behavioral Approach

This paper investigates a distributed formation control problem for networked robots, with the global objective of achieving predefined time-varying formations in an environment with obstacles. A novel fixed-time behavioral approach is proposed to tackle the problem, where a global formation task is divided into two local prioritized subtasks, and each of them leads to a desired velocity that can achieve the individual task in a fixed time. Then, two desired velocities are combined via the framework of the null-space-based behavioral projection, leading to a desired merged velocity that guarantees the fixed-time convergence of task errors. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control method is demonstrated by simulation results.

Searching for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe with PandaX-II Liquid Xenon Detector

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. This is the first NLDBD result reported from a dual-phase xenon experiment.

Dark Matter Results from First 98.7-day Data of PandaX-II Experiment

We report the WIMP dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing Underground Laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-day,the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 3.5 and 1000 GeV/c$^2$. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found $2.5\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c$^2$ at 90% confidence level.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC

This document outlines a set of simplified models for dark matter and its interactions with Standard Model particles. It is intended to summarize the main characteristics that these simplified models have when applied to dark matter searches at the LHC, and to provide a number of useful expressions for reference. The list of models includes both s-channel and t-channel scenarios. For s-channel, spin-0 and spin-1 mediation is discussed, and also realizations where the Higgs particle provides a portal between the dark and visible sectors. The guiding principles underpinning the proposed simplified models are spelled out, and some suggestions for implementation are presented.

Erratum: Bounds on Invisible Higgs boson Decays from $t\bar{t}H$ Production

Bounds on invisible decays of the Higgs boson from $t\bar{t}H$ production were inferred from a CMS search for stop quarks decaying to $t\bar{t}$ and missing transverse momentum. Limits on the production of $t\bar{t}H$ relied on the efficiency of the CMS selection for $t\bar{t}H$, as measured in a simulated sample. An error in the generation of the simulated sample lead to a significant overestimate of the selection efficiency. Corrected results are presented.

Limits on Excited Quarks from the ATLAS Multi-jet Search

We interpret the recent ATLAS multi-jet search results using 20.3 fb-1 data at sqrt(s)=8 TeV in the context of searching for excited quarks. Within the effective field theory framework, using the null results of that search, our analysis shows that the excited quark mass below 5 TeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level. Our analysis also indicates that when the validation of effective field theory is considered, the limit can be largely compromised.

Collider Bounds on Indirect Dark Matter Searches: The $WW$ Final State

We describe an effective theory of interaction between pairs of dark matter particles (denoted $χ$) and pairs of $W$ bosons. Such an interaction could accommodate $χ\barχ\rightarrow WW$ processes, which are a major focus of indirect dark matter experiments, as well as $pp \rightarrow W\rightarrow Wχ\barχ$ processes, which would predict excesses at the LHC in the $W$+MET final-state. We reinterpret an ATLAS $W$+MET analysis in the hadronic mode and translate the bounds to the space of indirect detection signals. We also reinterpret the $W$+MET analysis in terms of graviton theory through the processes $W\rightarrow WG$ and $Z\rightarrow ZG$ in which $G$ is invisible. Finally, the final state is interpreted in terms of a $W'$ model where $W'\rightarrow WZ$, where $W$ decays hadronically and $Z$ decays to neutrinos.

Simplified Models for Dark Matter and Missing Energy Searches at the LHC

The study of collision events with missing energy as searches for the dark matter (DM) component of the Universe are an essential part of the extensive program looking for new physics at the LHC. Given the unknown nature of DM, the interpretation of such searches should be made broad and inclusive. This report reviews the usage of simplified models in the interpretation of missing energy searches. We begin with a brief discussion of the utility and limitation of the effective field theory approach to this problem. The bulk of the report is then devoted to several different simplified models and their signatures, including s-channel and t-channel processes. A common feature of simplified models for DM is the presence of additional particles that mediate the interactions between the Standard Model and the particle that makes up DM. We consider these in detail and emphasize the importance of their inclusion as final states in any coherent interpretation. We also review some of the experimental progress in the field, new signatures, and other aspects of the searches themselves. We conclude with comments and recommendations regarding the use of simplified models in Run-II of the LHC.

Mono-everything: combined limits on dark matter production at colliders from multiple final states

Searches for dark matter production at particle colliders are complementary to direct-detection and indirect-detection experiments, and especially powerful for small masses, $m_χ<100$ GeV. An important collider dark matter signature is due to the production of a pair of these invisible particles with the initial-state radiation of a standard model particle. Currently, collider searches use individual and nearly orthogonal final states to search for initial-state jets, photons or massive gauge bosons. We combine these results across final states and across experiments to give the strongest current collider-based limits in the context of effective field theories, and map these to limits on dark matter interactions with nuclei and to dark matter self-annhiliation.

Limits on Four-Top Production from the ATLAS Same-sign Top-quark Search

We repurpose the recent ATLAS search for same-sign top quarks in data with 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ in the context of a search for production of four top quarks. Using the null results of that search, we place limits on the four-top-quark production cross section of about 1 pb. These limits are larger than the expected Standard Model rate for four-top-quark production, but are already strong enough to place interesting constraints on models which enhance that rate. We interpret these results in the context of models in which the right-handed top quark is composite and find limits on the compositeness scale of about 700 GeV.
