Is Bigger and Deeper Always Better? Probing LLaMA Across Scales and Layers

This paper presents an in-depth analysis of Large Language Models (LLMs), focusing on LLaMA, a prominent open-source foundational model in natural language processing. Instead of assessing LLaMA through its generative output, we design multiple-choice tasks to probe its intrinsic understanding in high-order tasks such as reasoning and computation. We examine the model horizontally, comparing different sizes, and vertically, assessing different layers. We unveil several key and uncommon findings based on the designed probing tasks: (1) Horizontally, enlarging model sizes almost could not automatically impart additional knowledge or computational prowess. Instead, it can enhance reasoning abilities, especially in math problem solving, and helps reduce hallucinations, but only beyond certain size thresholds; (2) In vertical analysis, the lower layers of LLaMA lack substantial arithmetic and factual knowledge, showcasing logical thinking, multilingual and recognitive abilities, with top layers housing most computational power and real-world knowledge.

Coexisting two-dimensional electron and hole gases highly confined at the interfaces of undoped KTaO3-sandwiching heterostructures

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in interfaces and surfaces based on perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO) has exhibited various interesting phenomena and is used to develop oxide electronics. Recently, KTaO$_3$ (KTO) shows great potential and is believed to host more exciting effects and phenomena toward novel devices. Here, through first-principles investigation and analysis, we find two types of coexisting 2DEG and 2D hole gas (2DHG) highly confined at the interfaces in undoped STO/KTO/BaTiO$_3$ heterostructures, when the KTO thickness $m$ reaches a crititcal value. The two interfaces are made by (SrO)$^0$/(TaO$_2$)$^+$ and (KO)$^-$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ for the A-type, and by (TiO$_2$)$^0$/(KO)$^-$ and (TaO$_2$)$^+$/(BO)$^0$ for the B-type. The 2D electron carriers originate from Ta-$5 d_{xy}$ states at the interface including TaO$_2$ atomic layer, and the hole carriers from O-$2 p_x/p_y$ orbitals at the other interface. The electron and hole effective masses are 0.3$m_0$ and $1.06\sim 1.12 m_0$, respectively, where $m_0$ is mass of free electron, and the 2D carrier concentrations are in the order of $10 ^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our analysis indicates that the interfacial 2DEG and 2DHG are simultaneously formed because of the band bending due to the polar discontinuity at the interfaces and the stress-induced polarization within the KTO layer. These could stimulate more exploration for new phenomena and novel devices.

Exact solutions of few-magnon problems in the spin-$S$ periodic XXZ chain

We solve few-magnon problems for a finite-size spin-$S$ periodic Heisenberg XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy through constructing sets of exact Bloch states achieving block diagonalization of the system. Concretely, the two-magnon (three-magnon) problem is converted to a single-particle one on a one-dimensional (two-dimensional) effective lattice whose size depends linearly (quadratically) on the total number of sites. For parameters lying within certain ranges, various types of multimagnon bound states are manifested and shown to correspond to edge states on the effective lattices. In the absence of the single-ion anisotropy, we reveal the condition under which exact zero-energy states emerge. As applications of the formalism, we calculate the transverse dynamic structure factor for a higher-spin chain near saturation magnetization and find signatures of the multimagnon bound states. We also calculate the real-time three-magnon dynamics from certain localized states, which are relevant to cold-atom quantum simulations, by simulating single-particle quantum walks on the effective lattices. This provides a physically transparent interpretation of the observed dynamics in terms of propagation of bound state excitations. Our method can be directly applied to more general spin or itinerant particle systems possessing translational symmetry.

Ground-state and dynamical properties of a spin-$S$ Heisenberg star

We generalize the Heisenberg star consisting of a spin-1/2 central spin and a homogeneously coupled spin bath modeled by the XXX ring [Richter J and Voigt A 1994 \emph{J. Phys. A: Math. Gen.} \textbf{27} 1139-1149] to the case of arbitrary central-spin size $S<N/2$, where $N$ is the number of bath spins. We describe how to block-diagonalize the model based on the Bethe ansatz solution of the XXX ring, with the dimension of each block Hamiltonian $\leq 2S+1$. We obtain all the eigenenergies and explicit expressions of the sub-ground states in each $l$-subspace with $l$ being the total angular momentum of the bath. Both the eigenenergies and the sub-ground states have distinct structures depending whether $S\leq l$ or $l<S$. The absolute ground-state energy and the corresponding $l$ as functions of the intrabath coupling are numerically calculated for $N=16$ and $S=1,2,\cdots,7$ and their behaviors are quantitatively explained in the weak and strong intrabath coupling limits. We then study the dynamics of the antiferromagnetic order within an XXX bath prepared in the Néel state. Effects of the initial state of the central spin, the value of $S$, and the system-bath coupling strength on the staggered magnetization dynamics are investigated. By including a Zeeman term for the central spin and the anisotropy in the intrabath coupling, we also study the polarization dynamics of the central spin for a bath prepared in the spin coherent state. Under the resonant condition and at the isotropic point of the bath, the polarization dynamics for $S>1/2$ exhibits collapse-revival behaviors with fine structures. However, the collapse-revival phenomena is found to be fragile with respect to anisotropy of the intrabath coupling.

Note on a less ad hoc derivation of the second quantization formalism

Second quantization is an essential topic in senior undergraduate and postgraduate level Quantum Mechanics course. However, it seems that there is a lack of transparent and natural derivation of this formalism from the first-quantization one in most existing textbooks. Without introducing the concept of a simple harmonic oscillator and taking the case of an assembly of identical fermions as an example, we provide a less ad hoc derivation of the second quantization formalism based on the equivalence of the fully antisymmetric many-fermion states and the Fock states.

Relaxation of antiferromagnetic order and growth of Rényi entropy in a generalized Heisenberg star

Interacting central spin systems, in which a central spin is coupled to a strongly correlated spin bath with intrabath interaction, consist of an important class of spin systems beyond the usual Gaudin magnet. These systems are relevant to several realistic setups and serve as an interesting platform to study interaction controlled decoherence and frustration induced instability of magnetic order. Using an equations-of-motion method based on analytical representations of spin-operator matrix elements in the XX chain, we obtain exact long-time dynamics of a generalized Heisenberg star consisting of a spin-$S$ central spin and an inhomogeneously coupled XXZ chain of $N\leq 16$ bath spins. In contrast to previous studies where the central spin dynamics is mainly concerned, we focus on the influence of the central spin on the dynamics of magnetic orders within the spin bath. By preparing the XXZ bath in a Néel state, we find that in the gapless phase of the bath even weak system-bath coupling could lead to nearly perfect relaxation of the antiferromagnetic order. In the gapped phase, the staggered magnetization decays rapidly and approaches a steady value that increases with increasing anisotropy parameter. These findings suggest the possibility of controlling internal dynamics of strongly correlated many-spin systems by certain coupled auxiliary systems of even few degrees of freedom. We also study the dynamics of the Rényi entanglement entropy of the central spin when the bath is prepared in the ground state. Both the overall profile and initial growth rate of the Rényi entropy are found to exhibit minima at the critical point of the XXZ bath.

Unsupervised Context Aware Sentence Representation Pretraining for Multi-lingual Dense Retrieval

Recent research demonstrates the effectiveness of using pretrained language models (PLM) to improve dense retrieval and multilingual dense retrieval. In this work, we present a simple but effective monolingual pretraining task called contrastive context prediction~(CCP) to learn sentence representation by modeling sentence level contextual relation. By pushing the embedding of sentences in a local context closer and pushing random negative samples away, different languages could form isomorphic structure, then sentence pairs in two different languages will be automatically aligned. Our experiments show that model collapse and information leakage are very easy to happen during contrastive training of language model, but language-specific memory bank and asymmetric batch normalization operation play an essential role in preventing collapsing and information leakage, respectively. Besides, a post-processing for sentence embedding is also very effective to achieve better retrieval performance. On the multilingual sentence retrieval task Tatoeba, our model achieves new SOTA results among methods without using bilingual data. Our model also shows larger gain on Tatoeba when transferring between non-English pairs. On two multi-lingual query-passage retrieval tasks, XOR Retrieve and Mr.TYDI, our model even achieves two SOTA results in both zero-shot and supervised setting among all pretraining models using bilingual data.

Exact dynamics of the homogeneous two-qubit $XXZ$ central spin model with the spin bath prepared in superpositions of symmetric Dicke states

We obtain exact dynamics of a two-qubit central spin model (CSM) consisting of two interacting qubits homogeneously coupled to a spin bath via the $XXZ$-type coupling, with the bath initially prepared in linear superpositions of the symmetric Dicke states. Using the interaction picture Hamiltonian with respect to the non-spin-flipping part of the model, we derive a sequence of equations of motion within each magnetization sector satisfied by the probability amplitudes of the time-evolved state. These equations of motion admit analytical solutions for the single-qubit CSM in which one of the two central qubits decouples from the rest of the system. Based on this, we provide a quantitative interpretation to the observed collapse-revival phenomena in the single-qubit Rabi oscillations when the bath is prepared in the spin coherent state. We then study the disentanglement and coherence dynamics of two initially entangled noninteracting qubits when the two qubits interact with individual baths or with a common bath. For individual baths the coherent dynamics is found to positively correlated to the single-qubit purity dynamics, and entanglement sudden disappearance and revivals are observed in both cases. The entanglement creation of two initially separable qubits coupled to a common bath is also studied and collapse and revival behaviors in the entanglement dynamics are observed. Choosing the equally weighted state and the $W$-class states as the bath initial states, we finally study the dynamics of entanglement between two individual bath spins and demonstrate the entanglement sharing mechanism in such a system.

Longitudinal magnetization dynamics in the quantum Ising ring: A Pfaffian method based on correspondence between momentum space and real space

As perhaps the most studied paradigm for a quantum phase transition, the periodic quantum Ising chain is exactly solvable via the Jordan-Wigner transformation followed by a Fourier transform that diagonalizes the model in the momentum space of spinless fermions. Although the above procedures are well-known, there remain some subtle points to be clarified regarding the correspondence between the real-space and momentum-space representations of the quantum Ising ring, especially those related to fermion parities. In this work, we establish the relationship between the two fully aligned ferromagnetic states in real space and the two degenerate momentum-space ground states of the classical Ising ring, with the former being a special case of the factorized ground states of the more general XYZ model on the frustration-free hypersurface. Based on this observation, we then provide a Pfaffian formula for calculating real-time dynamics of the parity-breaking longitudinal magnetization with the system initially prepared in one of the two ferromagnetic states and under translationally invariant drivings. The formalism is shown to be applicable to systems with the help of online programs for the numerical computation of the Pfaffian, thus providing an efficient method to numerically study, for example, the emergence of discrete time crystals in related systems.

Separable and entangled states in the high-spin XX central spin model

It is shown in a recent preprint [arXiv:2001.10008] that the central spin model with XX-type qubit-bath coupling is integrable for a central spin $s_0=1/2$. Two types of eigenstates, separable states (dark states) and entangled states (bright states) between the central spin and the bath spins, are manifested. In this work, we show by using an operator product state approach that the XX central spin model with central spin $s_0>1/2$ and inhomogeneous coupling is partially solvable. That is, a subset of the eigenstates are obtained by the operator product state ansatz. These are the separable states and those entangled states in the single-spin-excitation subspace with respect to the fully polarized reference state. Due to the high degeneracy of the separable states, the resulting Bethe ansatz equations are found to be non-unique. In the case of $s_0=1/2$ we show that all the separable and entangled states can be written in terms of the operator product states, recovering the results in [arXiv:2001.10008]. Moreover, we also apply our method to the case of homogeneous coupling and derive the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations.

Theory of exciton transport in molecular crystals strongly coupled to a cavity: A temperature-dependent variational approach

We present a semianalytical theory for exciton transport in organic molecular crystals interacting strongly with a single cavity mode. Based on the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model and the Kubo formula, we derive an exciton mobility expression in the framework of a temperature-dependent variational canonical transformation, which can cover a wide range of exciton-vibration coupling, exciton-cavity coupling, and temperatures. A closed-form expression for the coherent part of the total mobility is obtained in the zeroth order of the exciton-vibration coupling, which demonstrates the significance of vibrationally dressed dark excitons in the determination of the transport mechanism. By performing numerical simulations on both the H- and J-aggregates, we find that the exciton-cavity coupling has significant effects on the total mobility: 1) At low temperatures, there exists an optimal exciton-cavity coupling strength for the H-aggregate at which a maximal mobility is reached, while the mobility in the J-aggregate decreases monotonically with increasing exciton-cavity coupling; 2) At high temperatures, the mobility in both types of aggregates get enhanced by the cavity. We illustrate the above-mentioned low-temperature optimal mobility observed in the H-aggregate by using realistic parameters at room temperature.

XGLUE: A New Benchmark Dataset for Cross-lingual Pre-training, Understanding and Generation

In this paper, we introduce XGLUE, a new benchmark dataset that can be used to train large-scale cross-lingual pre-trained models using multilingual and bilingual corpora and evaluate their performance across a diverse set of cross-lingual tasks. Comparing to GLUE(Wang et al., 2019), which is labeled in English for natural language understanding tasks only, XGLUE has two main advantages: (1) it provides 11 diversified tasks that cover both natural language understanding and generation scenarios; (2) for each task, it provides labeled data in multiple languages. We extend a recent cross-lingual pre-trained model Unicoder(Huang et al., 2019) to cover both understanding and generation tasks, which is evaluated on XGLUE as a strong baseline. We also evaluate the base versions (12-layer) of Multilingual BERT, XLM and XLM-R for comparison.

Decoherence of a single spin coupled to an interacting spin bath

Decoherence of a central spin coupled to an interacting spin bath via inhomogeneous Heisenberg coupling is studied by two different approaches, namely an exact equations of motion (EOMs) method and a Chebyshev expansion technique (CET). By assuming a wheel topology of the bath spins with uniform nearest-neighbor $XX$-type intrabath coupling, we examine the central spin dynamics with the bath prepared in two different types of bath initial conditions. For fully polarized baths in strong magnetic fields, the polarization dynamics of the central spin exhibits a collapse-revival behavior in the intermediate-time regime. Under an antiferromagnetic bath initial condition, the two methods give excellently consistent central spin decoherence dynamics for finite-size baths of $N\leq14$ bath spins. The decoherence factor is found to drop off abruptly on a short time scale and approach a finite plateau value which depends on the intrabath coupling strength non-monotonically. In the ultrastrong intrabath coupling regime, the plateau values show an oscillatory behavior depending on whether $N/2$ is even or odd. The observed results are interpreted qualitatively within the framework of the EOM and perturbation analysis. The effects of anisotropic spin-bath coupling and inhomogeneous intrabath bath couplings are briefly discussed. Possible experimental realization of the model in a modified quantum corral setup is suggested.

Magnetically responsive gourd-shaped colloidal particles in cholesteric liquid crystals

Particle shape and medium chirality are two key features recently used to control anisotropic colloidal self-assembly and dynamics in liquid crystals. Here, we study magnetically responsive gourd-shaped colloidal particles dispersed in cholesteric liquid crystals with periodicity comparable or smaller than the particle's dimensions. Using magnetic manipulation and optical tweezers, which allow one to position colloids near the confining walls, we measured the elastic repulsive interactions of these particles with confining surfaces and found that separation-dependent particle-wall interaction force is a non-monotonic function of separation and shows oscillatory behavior. We show that gourd-shaped particles in cholesterics reside not on a single sedimentation level, but on multiple long-lived metastable levels separated by a distance comparable to cholesteric periodicity. Finally, we demonstrate three-dimensional laser tweezers assisted assembly of gourd-shaped particles taking advantage of both orientational order and twist periodicity of cholesterics, potentially allowing new forms of orientationally and positionally ordered colloidal organization in these media.

The Broken Lane of a Type II Radio Burst Caused by Collision of a Coronal Shock with a Flare Current Sheet

We investigated a peculiar metric type II solar radio burst with a broken lane structure, which was observed on November 13, 2012. In addition to the radio data, we also studied the data in the other wavelengths. The bursts were associated with two CMEs and two flares that originated from active region AR 11613. A long current sheet was developed in the first CME, and the second CME collided with the current sheet first and then merged with the first one. Combing information revealed by the multi-wavelength data indicated that a coronal shock accounting for the type II radio burst, and that the collision of this shock with the current sheet resulted in the broken lane of the type II radio burst. The type II burst lane resumed after the shock passed through the current sheet. We further estimated the thickness of the current sheet according to the gap on the lane of the type II burst, and found that the result is consistent with previous ones obtained for various events observed in different wavelengths by different instruments. In addition, the regular type II burst associated with the first CME/flare was also studied, and the magnetic field in each source region of the two type II bursts was further deduced in different way.

When polarons meet polaritons: Exciton-vibration interactions in organic molecules strongly coupled to confined light fields

We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron polariton, the photoluminescence line strength, and the mean number of vibrational quanta are obtained in terms of the optimal variational parameters. The dependence of these quantities upon the exciton-cavity coupling strength reveals that strong cavity coupling leads to an enhanced vibrational dressing of the cavity mode, and at the same time a vibrational decoupling of the dark excitons, which in turn results in a lower polaron polariton resembling a single-mode dressed bare lower polariton in the strong-coupling regime. Thermal effects on several observables are briefly discussed.

Contribution of Velocity Vortices and Fast Shock Reflection and Refraction to the Formation of EUV Waves in Solar Eruptions

We numerically study the detailed evolutionary features of the wave-like disturbance and its propagation in the eruption. This work is a follow-up to Wang et al., using significantly upgraded new simulations. We focus on the contribution of the velocity vortices and the fast shock reflection and refraction in the solar corona to the formation of the EUV waves. Following the loss of equilibrium in the coronal magnetic structure, the flux rope exhibits rapid motions and invokes the fast-mode shock forward of the rope, which then produces the type II radio burst. The expansion of the fast shock, which is associated with outward motion, takes place in various directions, and the downward expansion shows the reflection and the refraction as a result of the non-uniform background plasma. The reflected component of the fast shock propagates upward and the refracted component propagates downward. As the refracted component reaches the boundary surface, a weak echo is excited. The Moreton wave is invoked as the fast shock touches the bottom boundary, so the Moreton wave lags the type II burst. A secondary echo occurs in the area where reflection of the fast shock encounters the slow-mode shock, and the nearby magnetic field lines are further distorted because of the interaction between the secondary echo and the velocity vortices. Our results indicate that the EUV wave may arise from various processes that are revealed in the new simulations.

Fast magnetic reconnection in the solar chromosphere mediated by the plasmoid instability

Magnetic reconnection in the partially ionized solar chromosphere is studied in 2.5-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations including radiative cooling and ambipolar diffusion. A Harris current sheet with and without a guide field is considered. Characteristic values of the parameters in the middle chromosphere imply a high magnetic Reynolds number of $\sim10^{6}\mbox{--}10^7$ in the present simulations. Fast magnetic reconnection then develops as a consequence of the plasmoid instability without the need to invoke anomalous resistivity enhancements. Multiple levels of the instability are followed as it cascades to smaller scales, which approach the ion inertial length. The reconnection rate, normalized to the asymptotic values of magnetic field and Alfvén velocity in the inflow region, reaches values in the range $\sim0.01\mbox{--}0.03$ throughout the cascading plasmoid formation and for zero as well as for strong guide field. The out-flow velocity reaches $\approx40$~km\,s$^{-1}$. Slow-mode shocks extend from the $X$-points, heating the plasmoids up to $\sim 8\times10^4$~K. In the case of zero guide field, the inclusion of ambipolar diffusion and radiative cooling both cause a rapid thinning of the current sheet (down to $\sim30$~m) and early formation of secondary islands. Both of these processes have very little effect on the plasmoid instability for a strong guide field. The reconnection rates, temperature enhancements, and upward out-flow velocities from the vertical current sheet correspond well to their characteristic values in chromospheric jets.

Dynamics of evaporative colloidal patterning

Drying suspensions often leave behind complex patterns of particulates, as might be seen in the coffee stains on a table. Here we consider the dynamics of periodic band or uniform solid film formation on a vertical plate suspended partially in a drying colloidal solution. Direct observations allow us to visualize the dynamics of the band and film deposition, and the transition in between when the colloidal concentration is varied. A minimal theory of the liquid meniscus motion along the plate reveals the dynamics of the banding and its transition to the filming as a function of the ratio of deposition and evaporation rates. We also provide a complementary multiphase model of colloids dissolved in the liquid, which couples the inhomogeneous evaporation at the evolving meniscus to the fluid and particulate flows and the transition from a dilute suspension to a porous plug. This allows us to determine the concentration dependence of the bandwidth and the deposition rate. Together, our findings allow for the control of drying-induced patterning as a function of the colloidal concentration and evaporation rate.

Optimal suppression of defect generation during a passage across a quantum critical point

The dynamics of quantum phase transitions are inevitably accompanied by the formation of defects when crossing a quantum critical point. For a generic class of quantum critical systems, we solve the problem of minimizing the production of defects through the use of a gradient-based deterministic optimal control algorithm. By considering a finite size quantum Ising model with a tunable global transverse field, we show that an optimal power law quench of the transverse field across the Ising critical point works well at minimizing the number of defects, in spite of being drawn from a subset of quench profiles. These power law quenches are shown to be inherently robust against noise. The optimized defect density exhibits a transition at a critical ratio of the quench duration to the system size, which we argue coincides with the intrinsic speed limit for quantum evolution.

Rabi oscillations, decoherence, and disentanglement in a qubit-spin-bath system: exact dynamics

We examine the influence of environmental interactions on simple quantum systems by obtaining the exact reduced dynamics of a qubit coupled to a one-dimensional spin bath. In contrast to previous studies, both the qubit-bath coupling and the nearest neighbor intrabath couplings are taken as the spin-flip XX-type. We first study the Rabi oscillations of a single qubit with the spin bath prepared in a spin coherent state, finding that nonresonance and finite intrabath interactions have significant effects on the qubit dynamics. Next, we discuss the bath-induced decoherence of the qubit when the bath is initially in the ground state, and show that the decoherence properties depend on the internal phases of the spin bath. By considering two independent copies of the qubit-bath system, we finally probe the disentanglement dynamics of two noninteracting entangled qubits. We find that entanglement sudden death appears when the spin bath is in its critical phase. We show that the single-qubit decoherence factor is an upper bound for the two-qubit concurrence.

Centrifugal-Barrier Effects and Determination of the Interaction Radius

The interaction radius of a resonance is an important physical quantity to describe the structure of a resonance. But, for a long time, physicists do not find a reliable way to measure the magnitude of the interaction radius of a resonance. In this paper, a method is proposed to measure the interaction radius in physics analysis. It is found that the centrifugal barrier effects have great influence to physical results obtained in the PWA fit, and the interaction radius of some resonances can be well measured in the fit.

Chiral f-wave Topological Superuid in Triangular Optical Lattices

We demonstrate that an exotically chiral f-wave topological superfluid can be induced in coldfermionic-atom triangular optical lattices through the laser-field-generated effective non-Abelian gauge field, controllable Zeeman fields and s-wave Feshbach resonance. We find that the chiral f-wave topological superfluid is characterized by three gapless Majorana edge states located on the boundary of the system. More interestingly, these Majorana edge states degenerate into one Majorana fermion bound to each vortex in the superfluid. Our proposal enlarges topological superfluid family and specifies a unique experimentally controllable system to study the Majorana fermion physics.

Dynamics of a two-level system under the simultaneous influence of a spin bath and a boson bath

We study dynamics of a two-level system coupled simultaneously to a pair of dissimilar reservoirs, namely, a spin bath and a boson bath, which are connected via finite interbath coupling. It is found that the steady-state energy transfer in the two-level system increases with its coupling to the spin bath while optimal transfer occurs at intermediate coupling in the transient process. If the two-level system is strongly coupled to the spin bath, the population transfer is unidirectional barring minor population oscillations of minute amplitudes. If the spin bath is viewed as an atomic ensemble, robust generation of macroscopic superposition states exists against parameter variations of the two-level system and the boson bath.

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model: a time-dependent variational study

The Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation is employed to probe the dynamics of the zero temperature sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with strong friction utilizing the Davydov D1 ansatz. It is shown that initial conditions of the phonon bath have considerable influence on the dynamics. Counterintuitively, even in the very strong coupling regime, quantum coherence features still manage to survive under the polarized bath initial condition, while such features are absent under the factorized bath initial condition. In addition, a coherent-incoherent transition is found at a critical coupling strength alpha ~ 0.1 for s=0.25 under the factorized bath initial condition. We quantify how faithfully our ansatz follows the Schrödinger equation, finding that the time-dependent variational approach is robust for strong dissipation and deep sub-Ohmic baths (s<<1).

Resonant energy transfer enhanced by off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling

Dynamics of resonant energy transfer of a single excitation in a molecular dimer system is studied in the simultaneous presence of diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling. It is found that the off-diagonal coupling plays an important role in the excitation energy transfer process. Coherent transfer can be found at arbitrary temperature for a non-vanishing off-diagonal coupling strength with an oscillation frequency of site populations that increases with the off-diagonal coupling strength. Furthermore, we identify a threshold of the off-diagonal coupling strength below which there exists an optimal temperature that maximizes the total population transfer from the initially excited monomer to the acceptor monomer at long times. As the off-diagonal coupling strength is increased beyond the threshold, however, the optimal temperature is found to abruptly drop to zero.

Dynamics of entanglement in the transverse Ising model

We study the evolution of nearest-neighbor entanglement in the one dimensional Ising model with an external transverse field. The system is initialized as the so called "thermal ground state" of the pure Ising model. We analyze properties of generation of entanglement for different regions of external transverse fields. We find that the derivation of the time at which the entanglement reaches its first maximum with respect to the reciprocal transverse field has a minimum at the critical point. This is a new indicator of quantum phase transition.

Robust isothermal electric switching of interface magnetization: A route to voltage-controlled spintronics

Roughness-insensitive and electrically controllable magnetization at the (0001) surface of antiferromagnetic chromia is observed using magnetometry and spin-resolved photoemission measurements and explained by the interplay of surface termination and magnetic ordering. Further, this surface in placed in proximity with a ferromagnetic Co/Pd multilayer film. Exchange coupling across the interface between chromia and Co/Pd induces an electrically controllable exchange bias in the Co/Pd film, which enables a reversible isothermal (at room temperature) shift of the global magnetic hysteresis loop of the Co/Pd film along the magnetic field axis between negative and positive values. These results reveal the potential of magnetoelectric chromia for spintronic applications requiring non-volatile electric control of magnetization.

Classical Gravitational Interactions and Gravitational Lorentz Force

In quantum gauge theory of gravity, the gravitational field is represented by gravitational gauge field. The field strength of gravitational gauge field has both gravitational electric component and gravitational magnetic component. In classical level, gauge theory of gravity gives out classical Newtonian gravitational interactions in a relativistic form. Besides, it gives out gravitational Lorentz force which is the gravitational force on a moving object in gravitational magnetic field. The direction of gravitational Lorentz force does not along that of classical gravitational Newtonian force. Effects of gravitational Lorentz force should be detectable, and these effects can be used to discriminate gravitational magnetic field from ordinary electromagnetic magnetic field.

Determination of Gravitomagnetic Field through GRBs or X-ray Pulsars

In gauge theory of gravity, there is direct coupling between the spin of a particle and gravitomagnetic field. In the surface of a neutron star or near black hole, the coupling energy between spin and gravitomagnetic field can be large and detectable. Precise measurement of the position of spectrum lines of the corresponding emission or absorption can help us to determine the gravitomagnetic field and electromagnetic field simultaneously. The ratio $\frac{ΔE_e}{ΔE_p}$ can be served as a quantitative criteria of black hole. In GRBs or X-ray pulsar, absorption spectral lines of electron were observed. If the absorption spectral lines of electron and proton can be observed simultaneously, using the method given in this paper, we can determine the gravitomagnetic field in the surface of the star, and discriminate black hole from neutron star.
