Higher-order corrections for $t{\bar t}$ production at high energies

I present theoretical calculations of $t{\bar t}$ production cross sections through aN$^3$LO in proton-proton collisions. I show that soft-gluon corrections dominate the perturbative expansion not only for LHC energies but also for future collider energies through 100 TeV. Detailed results are presented for various collision energies. The $K$-factors are large and increase slowly with increasing energy. The scale uncertainties decrease greatly as we move to higher perturbative orders.

QCD corrections in $tqγ$ production at hadron colliders

We study QCD corrections for the associated production of a single top quark and a photon ($tqγ$ production) at hadron colliders. We calculate the NLO cross section at LHC and future collider energies for a variety of kinematical cuts, and we estimate uncertainties from scale dependence and from parton distributions. We also calculate differential distributions in top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity as well as photon energy. Finally, we study higher-order corrections from soft-gluon emission for this process, and we provide approximate NNLO (aNNLO) results for the cross section and top-quark differential distributions. We also compare our calculations with recent measurements from CMS and ATLAS at the LHC and find that the aNNLO corrections improve the comparison between the data and the Standard Model predictions.

preprint2021arXiv

$tW$ and $tZ'$ production at hadron colliders

We present theoretical results with soft-gluon corrections for two separate processes: (1) the production of a single top quark in association with a $W$ boson in the Standard Model; and (2) the production of a single top quark in association with a heavy $Z'$ boson in new physics models with or without anomalous couplings. We show that the higher-order corrections from soft-gluon emission are dominant for a wide range of collider energies. Results are shown for the total cross sections and top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions for $tW$ and $tZ'$ production at LHC and future collider energies up to 100 TeV. The uncertainties from scale dependence and parton distribution functions are also analyzed.

preprint2020arXiv

$tZ'$ production at hadron colliders

We study the production of a single top quark in association with a heavy extra $Z'$ at hadron colliders in new physics models with and without flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) couplings. We use QCD soft-gluon resummation and threshold expansions to calculate higher-order corrections for the total cross section and transverse-momentum distributions for $t Z'$ production. The impact of the uncertainties due to the structure of the proton and scale dependence is also analyzed.

Resummation for $2\rightarrow n$ processes in single-particle-inclusive kinematics

We present a formalism and detailed analytical results for soft-gluon resummation for $2\rightarrow n$ processes in single-particle-inclusive (1PI) kinematics. This generalizes previous work on resummation for $2 \rightarrow 2$ processes in 1PI kinematics. We also present soft anomalous dimensions at one and two loops for certain $2 \rightarrow 3$ processes involving top quarks and Higgs or $Z$ bosons, and we provide some brief numerical results.

preprint2016arXiv

Charged Higgs production in association with a top quark at approximate NNLO

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) total and differential cross sections for charged Higgs production in association with a top quark at LHC energies. The aNNLO results for the process $bg \rightarrow tH^-$ are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft-gluon corrections. Scale and parton-distribution uncertainties for the cross sections are shown. The top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are also calculated.

preprint2016arXiv

Single-top transverse-momentum distributions at approximate NNLO

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) transverse-momentum ($p_T$) distributions in single-top production processes. The aNNLO results are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft-gluon corrections in the differential cross section. Single-top as well as single-antitop $p_T$ distributions are shown in $t$-channel, $s$-channel, and $tW$ production for LHC energies.

preprint2016arXiv

Three-loop cusp anomalous dimension and a conjecture for $n$ loops

I present analytical expressions for the cusp anomalous dimension in QCD through three loops in terms of elementary functions and ordinary polylogarithms. I observe interesting relations between the results at different loops and provide a conjecture for the $n$-loop cusp anomalous dimension in terms of the lower-loop results. I also present numerical results and simple approximate formulas for the cusp anomalous dimension relevant to top-quark production.

preprint2015arXiv

High-order threshold corrections for top-pair and single-top production

I present results for high-order corrections from threshold resummation to cross sections and differential distributions in top-antitop pair production and in single-top production. I show aN$^3$LO results for the total $t{\bar t}$ cross section as well as for the top-quark transverse momentum ($p_T$) and rapidity distributions, and the top-quark forward-backward asymmetry in $t{\bar t}$ production. I compare with the most recent Tevatron and LHC data, including at 13 TeV. I also present aNNLO results for cross sections and $p_T$ distributions in $t$-channel, $s$-channel, and $tW$-channel single-top production.

preprint2015arXiv

NNNLO soft-gluon corrections for the top-quark $p_T$ and rapidity distributions

I present a calculation of next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNNLO) soft-gluon corrections for differential distributions in top-antitop pair production in hadronic collisions. Approximate NNNLO (aNNNLO) results are obtained from soft-gluon resummation. Theoretical predictions are shown for the top-quark aNNNLO transverse momentum ($p_T$) and rapidity distributions at LHC and Tevatron energies. The aNNNLO corrections enhance previous results for the distributions but have smaller theoretical uncertainties.

preprint2015arXiv

The top quark forward-backward asymmetry at approximate N$^3$LO

I calculate the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron in both the laboratory frame and the $t{\bar t}$ rest frame. I show that soft-gluon corrections are the dominant contribution to the asymmetry and closely approximate exact results through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). I present a calculation of the asymmetry including approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (N$^3$LO) soft-gluon contributions from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation as well as electroweak corrections. Thus approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) results are obtained, which significantly enhance and improve previous NNLO results. The theoretical aN$^3$LO result for the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron in the laboratory frame is ($6.8 \pm 0.3$)\%, and in the $t{\bar t}$ rest frame it is ($10.0 \pm 0.6$)\% which is in excellent agreement with recent Tevatron data.

preprint2014arXiv

NNLO soft-gluon corrections for the Z-boson and W-boson transverse momentum distributions

We present results for the $Z$-boson and $W$-boson transverse momentum ($p_T$) distributions for large $p_T$ at LHC and Tevatron energies. We calculate complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections as well as soft-gluon corrections at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) to the differential cross section. The NNLO soft-gluon contributions are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation at two loops. We find enhancements of the $p_T$ distributions and reductions of the scale dependence when the NNLO corrections are included.

preprint2014arXiv

NNNLO soft-gluon corrections for the top-antitop pair production cross section

I present a calculation of next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNNLO) soft-gluon corrections for top-antitop pair production in hadronic collisions. Approximate NNNLO (aNNNLO) results are obtained by adding the NNNLO soft-gluon corrections to the complete next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) cross section. Theoretical predictions are shown for the total aNNNLO $t{\bar t}$ cross section at LHC and Tevatron energies. The aNNNLO cross sections are larger but have smaller theoretical uncertainties than at NNLO.

preprint2014arXiv

Soft-Gluon Corrections in FCNC Top-Quark Production via Anomalous Gluon Couplings

We present a calculation of soft-gluon corrections in FCNC top-quark production via anomalous $t$-$q$-$g$ couplings. The soft anomalous dimension matrix is explicitly calculated at one-loop accuracy. This calculation allows threshold resummation at next-to-leading-logarithm accuracy. We also derive expressions for the soft-gluon corrections at NLO and at NNLO.

preprint2013arXiv

Theoretical results for top quark production

I discuss and compare several approaches to higher-order calculations of top quark production. I study the relative effectiveness of the approaches in approximating the exact NNLO results for the top-pair total cross section and highlight the theoretical and numerical differences between them. I show that the results from my soft-gluon resummation method are nearly identical to the exact NNLO cross section at all LHC and Tevatron energies. This agreement has important consequences for the validity of existing approximate NNLO differential distributions, for further refinements of the predictions, and for applications to other processes such as single-top production. I also compare approximate NNLO top quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions with recent LHC measurements.

preprint2013arXiv

Top Quark Production

I discuss top quark production in hadronic collisions. I present the soft-gluon resummation formalism and its derivation from factorization and renormalization-group evolution, and two-loop calculations of soft anomalous dimensions in the eikonal approximation. I discuss the contributions of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) soft-gluon corrections to the total cross sections and top-quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for top-antitop pair production, and for single-top production in the $t$ and $s$ channels and in association with a $W$ boson or a charged Higgs boson.

preprint2013arXiv

Top-quark transverse-momentum distributions in t-channel single-top production

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) top-quark transverse momentum, pT, distributions in t-channel single-top production. These distributions are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) soft-gluon resummation. Theoretical results for the single top as well as the single antitop pT distributions are shown for LHC and Tevatron energies.

preprint2012arXiv

Differential and total cross sections for top pair and single top production

I present theoretical results at approximate NNLO from NNLL resummation for top quark production at the LHC and the Tevatron, including new results at 8 TeV LHC energy. Total cross sections are shown for t tbar production, for single top production in the t and s channels and via associated tW production, and for associated tH- production. Top quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions in t tbar production are also presented, as well as new results for t-channel single top and single antitop pT distributions.

preprint2012arXiv

Higher-order QCD corrections for the W-boson transverse momentum distribution

We present results for W-boson production at large transverse momentum at LHC and Tevatron energies. We calculate complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections and higher-order soft-gluon corrections to the differential cross section. The soft-gluon contributions are resummed at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy via the two-loop soft anomalous dimensions. Both NLO and approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) p_T distributions are presented. Our numerical results are in good agreement with recent data from the LHC.

preprint2012arXiv

NNLL threshold resummation for top-pair and single-top production

I discuss threshold resummation at NNLL accuracy in the standard moment-space approach in perturbative QCD for top-pair and single-top production. For top quark pair production I present new approximate NNLO results for the total cross section and for the top quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions at 8 TeV LHC energy. I discuss the accuracy of the soft-gluon approximation and show that the NLO and NNLO approximate results from resummation are practically indistinguishable from exact NLO and partial NNLO results. For single top production I present new approximate NNLO results for the total cross sections in all three channels at the LHC and also for the top quark transverse momentum distributions in t-channel production and in top-quark associated production with a W boson. For both ttbar and single-top production the agreement of theoretical results with LHC and Tevatron data is excellent.

preprint2012arXiv

Single top and top pair production

I present results for single-top and top-pair production at the LHC and the Tevatron. Higher-order two-loop corrections are used to achieve NNLL resummation, which is then used to derive NNLO soft-gluon corrections. Results are presented for total cross sections, top transverse momentum distributions, and top rapidity distributions. All results are in excellent agreement with data from the LHC and the Tevatron. I also clarify the differences between various methods in top-pair production and their relation to exact NNLO results.

preprint2011arXiv

Next-to-next-to-leading-order collinear and soft gluon corrections for t-channel single top quark production

I present the resummation of collinear and soft gluon corrections to single top quark production in the t channel at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) accuracy using two-loop soft anomalous dimensions. The expansion of the resummed cross section yields approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) cross sections. Numerical results for t-channel single top quark (or single antitop) production at the Tevatron and the LHC are presented, including the dependence of the cross sections on the top quark mass, and the uncertainties from scale variation and parton distributions. Combined results for all single top quark production channels are also given.

preprint2011arXiv

The top quark rapidity distribution and forward-backward asymmetry

I present results for the top quark rapidity distribution at LHC and Tevatron energies, including higher-order corrections from threshold resummation. The next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon corrections at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) level are added to the NLO result. Theoretical predictions are shown for the rapidity distribution, including the scale dependence of the distributions. The forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron is also calculated.

preprint2011arXiv

Top Quark Theoretical Cross Sections and pT and Rapidity Distributions

I present theoretical results for the top quark pair total cross section, and for the top quark transverse momentum and rapidity distributions at Tevatron and LHC energies. I also present results for single top quark production in the t- and s-channels and also via associated production with a W boson. The calculations include approximate NNLO corrections that are derived from NNLL soft-gluon resummation.

preprint2010arXiv

Next-to-next-to-leading soft-gluon corrections for the top quark cross section and transverse momentum distribution

I present results for top quark production in hadronic collisions at LHC and Tevatron energies. The soft-gluon corrections to the differential cross section are resummed at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy via the two-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices. Approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) differential and total cross sections are calculated. Detailed theoretical predictions are shown for the t tbar cross section and the top quark p_T distribution at the Tevatron and the LHC.

preprint2010arXiv

NNLL resummation for s-channel single top quark production

I present the next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft and collinear gluon corrections to single top quark production in the s channel. Attaining NNLL accuracy involves the calculation of the two-loop soft anomalous dimension for the partonic subprocesses. Finite-order expansions of the resummed cross section are calculated through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). Numerical results are presented for s-channel single top quark production at the Tevatron and the LHC, including the dependence of the cross sections on the top quark mass and the uncertainties in the theoretical prediction. The higher-order corrections are significant for energies at both colliders and they decrease the theoretical uncertainty.

preprint2010arXiv

Top quark pair and single top production at Tevatron and LHC energies

I present the latest calculations of total and differential cross sections for top-antitop pair production and single top quark production via all main partonic channels. Higher-order corrections from the resummation of soft gluons are added through NNLL accuracy. Detailed numerical results are presented for approximate NNLO cross sections and top quark transverse momentum distributions at the Tevatron and LHC colliders.

preprint2010arXiv

Two-loop resummation for QCD hard scattering

I present results for the resummation of soft and collinear gluon contributions to QCD hard-scattering cross sections at two loops. This requires the calculation of UV and IR divergences through two loops and the construction of soft anomalous dimensions that control resummation at NNLL. Explicit results are provided for processes that involve massless and/or massive quarks, including single top and top pair production.

preprint2010arXiv

Two-loop soft anomalous dimensions for single top quark associated production with a W- or H-

I present results for the two-loop soft anomalous dimensions for associated production of a single top quark with a W boson or a charged Higgs boson. The calculation uses expressions for the massive cusp anomalous dimension, which are presented in different forms, and it allows soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy. From the NNLL resummed cross section I derive approximate NNLO cross sections for bg -> tW- and bg -> tH- at LHC energies of 7, 10, and 14 TeV.

Resummations in QCD hard-scattering at large and small x

We discuss different resummations of large logarithms that arise in hard-scattering cross sections of quarks and gluons in regions of large and small x. The large-x logarithms are typically dominant near threshold for the production of a specified final state. These soft and collinear gluon corrections produce large enhancements of the cross section for many processes, notably top quark and Higgs production, and typically the higher-order corrections reduce the factorization and renormalization scale dependence of the cross section. The small-x logarithms are dominant in the regime where the momentum transfer of the hard sub-process is much smaller than the total collision energy. These logarithms are important to describe multijet final states in deep inelastic scattering and hadron colliders, and in the study of parton distribution functions. The resummations at small and large x are linked by the eikonal approximation and are dominated by soft gluon anomalous dimensions. We will review their role in both contexts and provide some explicit calculations at one and two loops.

preprint2005arXiv

Next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order soft-gluon corrections in hard-scattering processes near threshold

I present a unified calculation of soft-gluon corrections to hard-scattering cross sections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO). Master formulas are derived, from a threshold resummation formalism, that can be applied to total and differential cross sections for hard-scattering processes in hadron colliders. I also present numerical results for charged Higgs production at the LHC where these corrections are large, and for top quark production at the Tevatron where these corrections greatly reduce the scale dependence of the cross section.

preprint2004arXiv

Production of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons at the Tevatron

We discuss the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in p pbar collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II. W boson hadroproduction is a process of relevance in testing the Standard Model and in estimates of backgrounds to new physics. The next-to-leading order cross section in the region of large transverse momentum is dominated by threshold soft-gluon corrections which arise from incomplete cancellations near partonic threshold between graphs with real emission and virtual graphs due to the limited phase space available for real gluon emission. In this contribution it is shown how, by including next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon corrections, the transverse momentum distribution of the W at the Tevatron is modestly enhanced and the dependence on the factorization and renormalization scales is significantly reduced.

preprint2004arXiv

Threshold corrections in bottom and charm quark hadroproduction at next-to-next-to-leading order

We calculate threshold soft-gluon corrections to total cross sections and transverse momentum distributions for bottom and charm quark production in fixed-target experiments, considering both pp and pi- p interactions. We investigate the quality of the near threshold soft-gluon approximation at next-to-leading order (NLO) and calculate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNNLL) accuracy, including some virtual terms. We find that the NNLO threshold corrections reduce the factorization and renormalization scale dependence of the cross sections.

preprint1999arXiv

Resummation for heavy quark and jet cross sections

We review the resummation of threshold logarithms for heavy quark, dijet, direct photon, and W boson production cross sections in hadronic collisions. Beyond leading logarithms the resummed cross section is sensitive to the color exchange in the hard scattering. The resummation is formulated at next-to-leading logarithmic or higher accuracy in terms of anomalous dimension matrices which describe the factorization of soft gluons from the hard scattering. We give results for the soft anomalous dimension matrices at one loop for the full range of partonic subprocesses involved in heavy quark, dijet, direct photon, and W boson production. We discuss the general diagonalization procedure that can be implemented for the calculation of the resummed cross sections, and we give numerical results for top quark production at the Fermilab Tevatron. We also present analytical results for the one- and two-loop expansions of the resummed cross sections.

preprint1999arXiv

Soft gluon resummation for heavy quark and dijet cross sections

We discuss the resummation of threshold logarithms for heavy quark and dijet cross sections in hadronic collisions. The resummed cross sections are presented at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in terms of anomalous dimension matrices which describe the factorization of soft gluons from the hard scattering. We apply our formalism to the calculation of the top quark production cross section at the Fermilab Tevatron.

preprint1998arXiv

Evolution of Color Exchange in QCD Hard Scattering

In QCD hard scattering cross sections, the color content of the underlying hard scattering evolves with a factorization scale. This evolution is controlled by an anomalous dimension matrix, specific to each hard-scattering reaction. Anomalous dimensions are determined from the renormalization of products of ordered exponentials of the gauge field, which describe the coherent radiation of gluons by incoming hadrons and the observed jets or particles of the final state. The anomalous dimensions depend on the kinematics of the underlying hard scattering, but are free of collinear singularities. A number of these matrices are available in the literature. Here, we exhibit one-loop mixing matrices for the full list of $2 \to 2$ reactions involving light quarks and gluons. The eight-by-eight anomalous dimension matrix for gluon-gluon scattering shows a simplified structure in the basis corresponding to definite color exchange in the $t$-channel.

preprint1998arXiv

Threshold Resummation for Dijet Cross Sections

We construct dijet differential cross sections at large momentum transfer, in which threshold logarithms have been summed to all orders in perturbation theory. This extends previous work on heavy quark production, by treating collinear singularities associated with hard, massless partons in the final state. The resummed corrections enable us to define, in the sense of factorization, the underlying color exchange mechanism. The influence of color exchange on the resummed cross section is contained in the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of an anomalous dimension matrix, which describes the factorization of coherent soft gluons from the hard scattering. The precise formulas depend on the partonic scattering angles and energies, as well as on the method used to define the jets in the final state. For cone dijets at fixed invariant mass, we find leading logarithmic corrections that, like those in the Drell-Yan process, are positive, and which grow with increasing dijet invariant mass. Other choices of dijet cross section can give, however, qualitatively different behavior, even at leading logarithm.

preprint1997arXiv

Resummation for QCD Hard Scattering

We resum distributions that are singular at partonic threshold (the elastic limit) in heavy quark production, in terms of logarithmic behavior in moment space. The method may be applied to a variety of cross sections sensitive to the edge of phase space, including transverse momentum distributions. Beyond leading logarithm, dependence on the moment variable is controlled by a matrix renormalization group equation, reflecting the evolution of composite operators that represent the color structure of the underlying hard scattering. At next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, these evolution equations may be diagonalized, and moment dependence in the cross section is a sum of exponentials. Beyond next-to-leading logarithm, resummation involves matrix-ordering. We give a detailed analysis for the case of heavy quark production by light quark annihilation and gluon fusion.
