White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

Planar Zeros in Gauge Theories and Gravity

Planar zeros are studied in the context of the five-point scattering amplitude for gauge bosons and gravitons. In the case of gauge theories, it is found that planar zeros are determined by an algebraic curve in the projective plane spanned by the three stereographic coordinates labelling the direction of the outgoing momenta. This curve depends on the values of six independent color structures. Considering the gauge group SU(N) with N=2,3,5 and fixed color indices, the class of curves obtained gets broader by increasing the rank of the group. For the five-graviton scattering, on the other hand, we show that the amplitude vanishes whenever the process is planar, without imposing further kinematic conditions. A rationale for this result is provided using color-kinematics duality.

Solution of the Bartels-Kwiecinski-Praszalowicz equation via Monte Carlo integration

We present a method of solution of the Bartels-Kwiecinski-Praszalowicz (BKP) equation based on the numerical integration of iterated integrals in transverse momentum and rapidity space. As an application, our procedure, which makes use of Monte Carlo integration techniques, is applied to obtain the gluon Green function in the odderon case at leading order. The same approach can be used for more complicated scenarios.

The Effect of a Rapidity Gap Veto on the Discrete BFKL Pomeron

We investigate the sensitivity of the discrete BFKL spectrum, which appears in the gluon Green function when the running coupling is considered, to a lower cut-off in the relative rapidities of the emitted particles. We find that the eigenvalues associated to each of the discrete eigenfunctions decrease with the size of the rapidity veto. The effect is stronger on the lowest eigenfunctions. The net result is a reduction of the growth with energy for the Green function together with a suppression in the regions with small transverse momentum.

The Effect of the Infrared Phase of the Discrete BFKL Pomeron on Transverse Momentum Diffusion

Imposing infrared boundary conditions on the BFKL equation with running coupling transforms the complex momentum w-plane cut present in the gluon Green function into an infinite series of positive Regge poles. In addition, a cut on the negative w line remains. We consider a Hermitian kernel at leading order with running coupling and construct the gluon Green function performing the w integration away from the real axis. We find a strong dependence of the asymptotic intercepts and collinear behaviour on the non-perturbative choice of the boundary conditions, in the form of an infrared phase. This is particularly manifest in the asymmetric infrared/ultraviolet structure of the associated diffusion in transverse momentum. We find that random walks into the infrared region are largely reduced in this approach.

Single bottom quark production in kT-factorisation

We present a study within the kT-factorisation scheme on single bottom quark production at the LHC. In particular, we calculate the rapidity and transverse momentum differential distributions for single bottom quark/anti-quark production. In our setup, the unintegrated gluon density is obtained from the NLx BFKL Green function whereas we included mass effects to the Lx heavy quark jet vertex. We compare our results to the corresponding distributions predicted by the usual collinear factorisation scheme. The latter were produced with Pythia 8.1.

The Double Copy Structure of Soft Gravitons

The subleading corrections to factorization theorems for soft bremsstrahlung in nonabelian gauge theories and gravity are investigated in the case of a five point amplitude with four scalars. Building on recent results, we write the action of the angular momentum operators on scattering amplitudes as derivatives with respect to the Mandelstam invariants to uncover a double copy structure in the contribution of the soft graviton to the amplitude, both in the leading term and the first correction. Using our approach, we study Gribov's theorem as extended to nonabelian gauge theories and gravity by Lipatov, and find that subleading corrections can be obtained from those to Low's theorem by dropping the terms with derivatives with respect to the center-of-mass energy, which are suppressed at high energies. In this case, the emitted gravitons are not necessarily soft.

Order-by-order Analytic Solution to the BFKL Equation

We propose a regularization of the BFKL equation which allows for its solution in each order of perturbation theory by means of a sum over multiple poles. This sum can be presented in a rather simple formula for the Fourier transform in the azimuthal angle of the gluon Green function. In order to test our method, we have compared a few orders in the expansion to previous results by Del Duca, Dixon, Duhr and Pennington, finding agreement. Our formalism is general and can be applied to other, more complicated, kernels.

Color-kinematics duality and dimensional reduction for graviton emission in Regge limit

In this talk we review the work in [1,2,3] where we have studied the applicability of the color-kinematics duality to the scattering of two distinguishable scalar matter particles with one gluon emission in QCD, or one graviton emission in Einstein gravity. We have shown that the duality works well in the Regge limit under two different extensions of the gauge theory: the introduction of a new scalar contact interaction and the relaxation of the distinguishability of the scalars. Both modifications correspond to theories obtained by dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional pure gauge theories.

Color-Kinematics Duality in Multi-Regge Kinematics and Dimensional Reduction

In this note we study the applicability of the color-kinematics duality to the scattering of two distinguishable scalar matter particles with gluon emission in QCD, or graviton emission in Einstein gravity. Previous analysis suggested that direct use of the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson double-copy prescription to matter amplitudes does not reproduce the gravitational amplitude in multi-Regge kinematics. This situation, however, can be avoided by extensions to the gauge theory, while maintaning the same Regge limit. Here we present two examples of these extensions: the introduction of a scalar contact interaction and the relaxation of the distinguishability of the scalars. In both cases new diagrams allow for a full reconstruction of the correct Regge limit on the gravitational side. Both modifications correspond to theories obtained by dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional gauge theories.

Description of F2 and FL at small x using a collinearly-improved BFKL resummation

We present a detailed description of the Q^2 and x dependence of the structure functions F2 and FL as extracted from the Deep Inelastic Scattering data at HERA in the small Bjorken x region. Making use of a collinearly-improved BFKL equation at next-to-leading order and a treatment of the running of the coupling using non-Abelian physical renormalization together with the BLM scale choice allows us to reach low values of Q^2. We also provide some predictions for future lepton-hadron colliders.

Color-Kinematics Duality and the Regge Limit of Inelastic Amplitudes

We investigate tree-level five-point amplitudes in scalar-QCD expressed in terms of Sudakov variables and find the equivalent "gravitational" counterparts using the color-kinematics duality proposed by Bern, Carrasco, and Johannson. Taking the multi-Regge limit in the gravitational amplitudes, we show that those pieces in the coupling of two reggeized gravitons to one on-shell graviton directly stemming from the double copy of the vertex for two reggeized gluons to one on-shell gluon are universal and properly reproduced by the duality.

Double-logarithms in Einstein-Hilbert gravity and supergravity

We study the interplay between graviton reggeization and double-logarithmic in energy contributions to four-graviton scattering in theories with and without supersymmetry. Predictions to all orders in the gravitational coupling are given for these double-logarithms. As the number of supersymmetries grows these terms generate a convergent behaviour for the amplitudes at very high energies. At two-loop level, we find agreement with previous exact results for N=8 supergravity and with those of Boucher-Veronneau and Dixon, who studied the N=4,5,6 supergravities using a conjectured double-copy structure of gravity.

Graviton emission in Einstein-Hilbert gravity

The five-point amplitude for the scattering of two distinct scalars with the emission of one graviton in the final state is calculated in exact kinematics for Einstein-Hilbert gravity. The result, which satisfies the Steinmann relations, is expressed in Sudakov variables, finding that it corresponds to the sum of two gauge invariant contributions written in terms of a new two scalar - two graviton effective vertex. A similar calculation is carried out in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) for the scattering of two distinct quarks with one extra gluon in the final state. The effective vertices which appear in both cases are then evaluated in the multi-Regge limit reproducing the well-known result obtained by Lipatov where the Einstein-Hilbert graviton emission vertex can be written as the product of two QCD gluon emission vertices, up to corrections to preserve the Steinmann relations.

NLO corrections to the gluon induced forward jet vertex from the high energy effective action

We determine both real and virtual next-to-leading order corrections to the gluon induced forward jet vertex, from the high energy effective action proposed by Lipatov. For these calculations we employ the same regularization and subtraction formalism developed in our previous work on the quark-initiated vertex. We find agreement with previous results in the literature.

The hard to soft Pomeron transition in small x DIS data using optimal renormalization

We show that it is possible to describe the effective Pomeron intercept, determined from the HERA Deep Inelastic Scattering data at small values of Bjorken x, using next-to-leading order BFKL evolution together with collinear improvements. To obtain a good description over the whole range of Q^2 we use a non-Abelian physical renormalization scheme with BLM optimal scale, combined with a parametrization of the running coupling in the infrared region.

Dual conformal invariance in the Regge limit

A dual conformal symmetry, analogous to the dual conformal symmetry observed for the scattering amplitudes of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory, is identified in the Regge limit of QCD. Combined with the original two-dimensional conformal symmetry of the theory, this dual symmetry can potentially explain the integrability of the BFKL Hamiltonian. We also give evidence that the symmetry survives when a subset of unitarity corrections are taken into account by studying briefly the non-planar 2 to m reggeon transition vertices.

Resummations in QCD hard-scattering at large and small x

We discuss different resummations of large logarithms that arise in hard-scattering cross sections of quarks and gluons in regions of large and small x. The large-x logarithms are typically dominant near threshold for the production of a specified final state. These soft and collinear gluon corrections produce large enhancements of the cross section for many processes, notably top quark and Higgs production, and typically the higher-order corrections reduce the factorization and renormalization scale dependence of the cross section. The small-x logarithms are dominant in the regime where the momentum transfer of the hard sub-process is much smaller than the total collision energy. These logarithms are important to describe multijet final states in deep inelastic scattering and hadron colliders, and in the study of parton distribution functions. The resummations at small and large x are linked by the eikonal approximation and are dominated by soft gluon anomalous dimensions. We will review their role in both contexts and provide some explicit calculations at one and two loops.

Production of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons at the Tevatron

We discuss the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in p pbar collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II. W boson hadroproduction is a process of relevance in testing the Standard Model and in estimates of backgrounds to new physics. The next-to-leading order cross section in the region of large transverse momentum is dominated by threshold soft-gluon corrections which arise from incomplete cancellations near partonic threshold between graphs with real emission and virtual graphs due to the limited phase space available for real gluon emission. In this contribution it is shown how, by including next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon corrections, the transverse momentum distribution of the W at the Tevatron is modestly enhanced and the dependence on the factorization and renormalization scales is significantly reduced.

Inclusive Double Diffractive Production of SUSY Particles at the LHC

We estimate the inclusive double diffractive production of SUSY particles at the LHC using a modified version of the POMWIG Monte Carlo event generator. The diffractive events are produced via the Ingelman-Schlein model for double pomeron exchange. The MSSM parameter space is scanned using the ``Snowmass benchmark points'' and it is shown that the lightest Higgs boson is the only SUSY particle with a large enough rate to be detected using these diffractive events.

The Gluon Green's Function in the BFKL Approach at Next-to-Leading Logarithmic Accuracy

We investigate the gluon Green's function in the high energy limit of QCD using a recently proposed iterative solution of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. To establish the applicability of this method in the NLL approximation we solve the BFKL equation as originally written by Fadin and Lipatov, and compare the results with previous studies in the leading logarithmic (LL) approximation.
