The Abelian Heterotic Conifold

We study heterotic supergravity on the conifold and its Z2 orbifold with Abelian gauge fields and three-form flux. At large distances, these solutions are locally Ricci-flat, have a magnetic flux through the two-sphere at infinity as well as non-zero five-brane charge. For a given flux, our family of solutions has three real parameters, the size of the pair of two spheres in the IR and the dilaton zero mode. We present an explicit analytic solution for the decoupled near horizon region where for a given flux, the size of the cycles is frozen and the only parameter is the dilaton zero mode. We also present an exactly solvable worldsheet CFT for this near horizon region. When one of the two cycles has vanishing size, the near horizon region no longer exists but we obtain a solution on the (unorbifolded) resolved conifold.

Abelian Hypermultiplet Gaugings and BPS Vacua in N = 2 Supergravity

We analyze the gauging of Abelian isometries on the hypermultiplet scalar manifolds of N = 2 supergravity in four dimensions. This involves a study of symmetric special quaternionic-Kähler manifolds, building on the work of de Wit and Van Proeyen. In particular we compute the general set of Killing prepotentials and associated compensators for these manifolds manifolds. This allows us to glean new insights about AdS 4 vacua which preserve the full N = 2 supersymmetry as well as BPS static black hole horizons.

BPS M5-branes as Defects for the 3d-3d Correspondence

We study supersymmetric probe M5-branes in the AdS_4 solution that arises from M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold M_3. This amounts to introducing internal defects within the framework of the 3d-3d correspondence. The BPS condition for a probe M5-brane extending along all of AdS_4 requires it to wrap a surface embedded in an S^2-fibration over M_3. We find that the projection of this surface to M_3 can be either a geodesic or a tubular surface around a geodesic. These configurations preserve an extra U(1) symmetry, in addition to the one corresponding to the R-symmetry of the dual 3d N=2 gauge theory. BPS M2-branes can stretch between M5-branes wrapping geodesics. We interpret the addition of probe M5-branes on a closed geodesic in terms of conformal Dehn surgery.

Higher Derivative Corrections and Central Charges from Wrapped M5-branes

We compute four-derivative corrections to the AdS supergravity actions arising from the near-horizon geometry of N M5-branes wrapped on either one or two Riemann surfaces. This setup features the novel presence of both gauged isometries as well as nontrivial hypermultiplets. We argue that the 5d Chern-Simons terms receive not only higher-derivative corrections but also contributions from Killing vector parameters, which we find must also be corrected. We check the central charges found by our supergravity methods against the dual field theory results and find perfect agreement at leading and subleading order in N. Along the way, we find higher derivative corrections to general AdS_5 and AdS_3xΣ_g geometries.

Static BPS Black Holes in AdS4 with General Dyonic Charges

We complete the study of static BPS, asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes within N=2 FI-gauged supergravity and where the scalar manifold is a homogeneous very special Kahler manifold. We find the analytic form for the general solution to the BPS equations, the horizon appears as a double root of a particular quartic polynomial whereas in previous work this quartic polynomial further factored into a pair of double roots. A new and distinguishing feature of our solutions is that the phase of the supersymmetry parameter varies throughout the black hole. The general solution has $2n_v$ independent parameters; there are two algebraic constraints on $2n_v+2$ charges, matching our previous analysis on BPS solutions of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_g$. As a consequence we have proved that every BPS geometry of this form can arise as the horizon geometry of a BPS AdS$_4$ black hole. When specialized to the STU-model our solutions uplift to M-theory and describe a stack of M2-branes wrapped on a Riemman surface in a Calabi-Yau fivefold with internal angular momentum.

AdS Black Holes from Duality in Gauged Supergravity

We study and utilize duality transformations in a particular STU-model of four dimensional gauged supergravity. This model is a truncation of the de Wit-Nicolai N=8 theory and as such has a lift to eleven-dimensional supergravity on the seven-sphere. Our duality group is $U(1)^3$ and while it can be applied to any solution of this theory, we consider the known asymptotically AdS$_4$, supersymmetric black holes and focus on duality transformations which preserve supersymmetry. For static black holes we generalize the supersymmetric solutions of Cacciatori and Klemm from three magnetic charges to include two additional electric charges and argue that this is co-dimension one in the full space of supersymmetric static black holes in the STU-model. These new static black holes have nontrivial profiles for axions. For rotating black holes, we generalize the known two-parameter supersymmetric solution to include an additional parameter which represents scalar hair. When lifted to M-theory, these black holes correspond to the near horizon geometry of a stack of BPS rotating M2-branes, spinning on an $S^7$ which is fibered non-trivially over a Riemann surface.

BPS Black Hole Horizons in N=2 Gauged Supergravity

We study static BPS black hole horizons in four dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to $n_v$-vector multiplets and with an arbitrary cubic prepotential. We work in a symplectically covariant formalism which allows for both electric and magnetic gauging parameters as well as dyonic background charges and obtain the general solution to the BPS equations for horizons of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_g$. In particular this means we solve for the scalar fields as well as the metric of these black holes as a function of the gauging parameters and background charges. When the special Kahler manifold is a symmetric space, our solution is completely explicit and the entropy is related to the familiar quartic invariant. For more general models our solution is implicit up to a set of holomorphic quadratic equations. For particular models which have known embeddings in M-theory, we derive new horizon geometries with dyonic charges and numerically construct black hole solutions. These correspond to M2-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface in a local Calabi-Yau five-fold with internal spin.

BPS Black Holes in AdS4 from M-theory

We study supersymmetric black holes in $AdS_4$ in the framework of four dimensional gauged $\N=2$ supergravity coupled to hypermultiplets. We derive the flow equations for a general electrically gauged theory where the gauge group is Abelian and, restricting them to the fixed points, we derive the gauged supergravity analogue of the attractor equations for theories coupled to hypermultiplets. The particular models we analyze are consistent truncations of M-theory on certain Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds. We study the space of horizon solutions of the form $AdS_2\times Σ_g$ with both electric and magnetic charges and find a four-dimensional solution space when the theory arises from a reduction on $Q^{111}$. For other $SE_7$ reductions, the solutions space is a subspace of this. We construct explicit examples of spherically symmetric black holes numerically.

Punctures from Probe M5-Branes and N=1 Superconformal Field Theories

We study probe M5-branes in N=1 AdS5 solutions of M-theory that arise from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface. Using the BPS condition from kappa-symmetry, we classify supersymmetric probe M5-branes that extend along all of AdS5 and intersect the Riemann surface at points. These can be viewed as punctures in the dual N=1 superconformal field theories. We find M5-branes that correspond to the two types of simple punctures previously studied in field theory. In addition, when the central charge is rational, we find a new class of M5-branes with a moduli space that includes two internal dimensions in addition to the Riemann surface. These new M5-branes have the essential characteristic of fractional branes, in that a single one at a generic point of its moduli space becomes multiple M5-branes at special points.

Supersymmetric Black Holes in AdS4 from Very Special Geometry

Supersymmetric black holes in AdS spacetime are inherently interesting for the AdS/CFT correspondence. Within a four dimensional gauged supergravity theory coupled to vector multiplets, the only analytic solutions for regular, supersymmetric, static black holes in AdS4 are those in the STU-model due to Cacciatori and Klemm. We study a class of U(1)-gauged supergravity theories coupled to vector multiplets which have a cubic prepotential, the scalar manifold is then a very special Kahler manifold. When the resulting very special Kahler manifold is a homogeneous space, we find analytic solutions for static, supersymmetric AdS4 black holes with vanishing axions. The horizon geometries of our solutions are constant curvature Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus.

On N = 2 Truncations of IIB on T^{1,1}

We study the N=4 gauged supergravity theory which arises from the consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on the coset T^{1,1}. We analyze three N=2 subsectors and in particular we clarify the relationship between true superpotentials for gauged supergravity and certain fake superpotentials which have been widely used in the literature. We derive a superpotential for the general reduction of type I supergravity on T^{1,1} and this together with a certain solution generating symmetry is tantamount to a superpotential for the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler solution.

On Supersymmetric Flux Solutions of M-theory

Motivated by the geometric structures of supersymmetric holographic RG-flows, we scan for N=2 AdS_4 solutions in M-theory. One particularly well understood holographic RG flow in M-theory is dual to a mass deformation of the N=8 Chern-Simons theory. We utilize an Ansatz which is a natural generalization of this background in our scan. We find a single new solution with non-trivial internal flux and the topology of S^7. Interestingly, despite our Ansatz being quite general, within our system we rule out solutions with internal flux on more general Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds.

Non-Relativistic Solutions of N=2 Gauged Supergravity

We find infinite families of supersymmetric solutions of four dimensional, N=2 gauged supergravity with Lifshitz, Schrodinger and also AdS symmetries. We focus on the canonical example of a single hypermultiplet and a single vector multiplet and find that the spectrum of solutions depends crucially on whether the gaugings are electric or magnetic but to a far milder extent on the strength of the gaugings. For purely electric or purely magnetic gaugings we generically find Lifshitz solutions, while for a mixed gauging we find Schrodinger and AdS solutions. For some of the gaugings the theory has a known lift to string/M-theory thus giving a higher dimensional embedding of our solutions.

On Metastable Vacua and the Warped Deformed Conifold: Analytic Results

Continuing the programme of constructing the backreacted solution corresponding to smeared anti-D3 branes in the warped deformed conifold, we solve analytically the equations governing the space of first-order deformations around this solution. We express the results in terms of at most three nested integrals. These are the simplest expressions for the space of $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \ZZ_2$-invariant deformations, in which the putative solution for smeared anti-D3 branes must live. We also explain why one cannot claim to identify this solution without fully relating the coefficients of the infrared and ultraviolet expansions of the deformation modes. The analytic solution we find is the first step in this direction.

Supersymmetric Consistent Truncations of IIB on T(1,1)

We study consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions of type IIB supergravity on T(1,1) down to five-dimensions. We find that the most general reduction containing singlets under the global SU(2)xSU(2) symmetry of T(1,1) is N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets with a particular gauging due to topological and geometric flux. Key to this reduction is several modes which have not been considered before in the literature and our construction allows us to easily show that the Papadopoulos - Tseytlin ansatz for IIB solutions on T(1,1) is a consistent truncation. This explicit reduction provides an organizing principle for the linearized spectrum around the warped deformed conifold as well as the baryonic branch and should have applications to the physics of flux compactifications with warped throats.

The backreaction of anti-D3 branes on the Klebanov-Strassler geometry

We present the full numerical solution for the 15-dimensional space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background which preserve the SU(2) X SU(2) X Z_2 symmetries. We identify within this space the solution corresponding to anti-D3 branes, (modulo the presence of a certain subleading singularity in the infrared). All the 15 integration constants of this solution are fixed in terms of the number of anti-D3 branes, and the solution differs in the UV from the supersymmetric solution into which it is supposed to decay by a mode corresponding to a rescaling of the field theory coordinates. Deciding whether two solutions that differ in the UV by a rescaling mode are dual to the same theory is involved even for supersymmetric Klebanov-Strassler solutions, and we explain in detail some of the subtleties associated to this.

Missing Mirrors: Type IIA Supergravity on the Resolved Conifold

We consider massive IIA supergravity on the resolved conifold with $SU(2)_L^2\times U(1)_R$ symmetry and $\N=1$ supersymmetry. A one dimensional family of such regular solutions was found by Brandhuber and we propose this to be the mirror to one dimension of the moduli space of IIB solutions on the deformed conifold found by Butti et al. This family provides a description of the geometric transition in terms of a smooth family of flux backgrounds. The remaining dimension of the moduli space of Butti et al contains the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler and we propose that the mirror of this is either some stringy resolution of a family of singular solutions found here or must be entirely non-geometric.

On the Existence of Meta-stable Vacua in Klebanov-Strassler

We solve for the complete space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background consistent with the symmetries preserved by a stack of anti-D3 branes smeared on the $S^3$ of the deformed conifold. We find that the only solution whose UV physics is consistent with that of a perturbation produced by anti-D3 branes must have a singularity in the infrared, coming from NS and RR three-form field strengths whose energy density diverges. If this singularity is admissible, our solution describes the backreaction of the anti-D3 branes, and is thus likely to be dual to the conjectured metastable vacuum in the Klebanov-Strassler field theory. If this singularity is not admissible, then our analysis strongly suggests that anti-D3 branes do not give rise to metastable Klebanov-Strassler vacua, which would have dramatic consequences for some string theory constructions of de Sitter space. Key to this result is a simple, universal form for the force on a probe D3-brane in our ansatz.

On The Inflaton Potential From Antibranes in Warped Throats

We compute the force between a stack of smeared antibranes at the bottom of a warped throat and a stack of smeared branes at some distance up the throat, both for anti-D3 branes and for anti-M2 branes. We perform this calculation in two ways: first, by treating the antibranes as probes in the background sourced by the branes and second, by treating the branes as probes in the candidate background sourced by the antibranes. These two very different calculations yield exactly the same expression for the force, for all values of the brane-antibrane separation. This indicates that the force between a brane and an antibrane is not screened in backgrounds where there is positive charge dissolved in flux, and gives a way to precisely compute the inflaton potential in certain string cosmology scenarios.

Supergravity Instabilities of Non-Supersymmetric Quantum Critical Points

Motivated by the recent use of certain consistent truncations of M-theory to study condensed matter physics using holographic techniques, we study the SU(3)-invariant sector of four-dimensional, N=8 gauged supergravity and compute the complete scalar spectrum at each of the five non-trivial critical points. We demonstrate that the smaller SU(4)^- sector is equivalent to a consistent truncation studied recently by various authors and find that the critical point in this sector, which has been proposed as the ground state of a holographic superconductor, is unstable due to a family of scalars that violate the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We also derive the origin of this instability in eleven dimensions and comment on the generalization to other embeddings of this critical point which involve arbitrary Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds. In the spirit of a resurging interest in consistent truncations, we present a formal treatment of the SU(3)-invariant sector as a U(1)xU(1) gauged N=2 supergravity theory coupled to one hypermultiplet.

The Backreaction of Anti-M2 Branes on a Warped Stenzel Space

We find the superpotential governing the supersymmetric warped M-theory solution with a transverse Stenzel space found by Cvetic, Gibbons, Lu and Pope in hep-th/0012011, and use this superpotential to extract and solve the twelve coupled equations underlying the first-order backreacted solution of a stack of anti-M2 branes in this space. These anti-M2 branes were analyzed recently in a probe approximation by Klebanov and Pufu, who conjectured that they should be dual to a metastable vacuum of a supersymmetric 2+1 dimensional theory. We find that the would-be supergravity dual to such a metastable vacuum must have an infrared singularity and discuss whether this singularity is acceptable or not. Given that a similar singularity appears when placing anti-D3 branes in the Klebanov-Strassler solution, our work strengthens the possibility that anti-branes in warped throats do not give rise to metastable vacua.

Unoriented Strings, Loop Equations, and N=1 Superpotentials from Matrix Models

We apply the proposal of Dijkgraaf and Vafa to analyze N=1 gauge theory with SO(N) and Sp(N) gauge groups with arbitrary tree-level superpotentials using matrix model techniques. We derive the planar and leading non-planar contributions to the large M SO(M) and Sp(M) matrix model free energy by applying the technology of higher-genus loop equations and by straightforward diagrammatics. The loop equations suggest that the RP^2 free energy is given as a derivative of the sphere contribution, a relation which we verify diagrammatically. With a refinement of the proposal of Dijkgraaf and Vafa for the effective superpotential, we find agreement with field theory expectations.

q-Identities and affinized projective varieties, II. Flag varieties

In a previous paper we defined the concept of an affinized projective variety and its associated Hilbert series. We computed the Hilbert series for varieties associated to quadratic monomial ideals. In this paper we show how to apply these results to affinized flag varieties. We discuss various examples and conjecture a correspondence between the Hilbert series of an affinized flag variety and a modified Hall-Littlewood polynomial. We briefly discuss the application of these results to quasi-particle character formulas for affine Lie algebra modules.
