$E_9$ symmetry in the Heterotic String on $S^1$ and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

We show that compactifications of the heterotic string on a circle exhibit at the boundary of moduli space ($R\to 0$, or equivalently the decompactification limit $R \to \infty$) a tower of winding or momentum modes that enhance the $E_8 \times E_8$ or $SO(32)$ gauge symmetry to the affine algebras $(E_9 \oplus E_9)/\sim$ (the identification means that the two copies of $E_9$ share the same central extension) and $\hat{D}_{16}$, respectively. We also prove that these towers of modes satisfy the lattice Weak Gravity and Repulsive Force Conjectures.

The Tadpole Conjecture in Asymptotic Limits

The tadpole conjecture suggests that the complete stabilization of complex structure deformations in Type IIB and F-theory flux compactifications is severely obstructed by the tadpole bound on the fluxes. More precisely, it states that the stabilization of a large number of moduli requires a flux background with a tadpole that scales linearly in the number of stabilized fields. Restricting to the asymptotic regions of the complex structure moduli space, we give the first conceptual argument that explains this linear scaling setting and clarifies why it sets in only for a large number of stabilized moduli. Our approach relies on the use of asymptotic Hodge theory. In particular, we use the fact that in each asymptotic regime an orthogonal sl(2)-block structure emerges that allows us to group fluxes into sl(2)-representations and decouple complex structure directions. We show that the number of stabilized moduli scales with the number of sl(2)-representations supported by fluxes, and that each representation fixes a single modulus. Furthermore, we find that for Calabi-Yau four-folds all but one representation can be identified with representations occurring on two-folds. This allows us to discuss moduli stabilization explicitly and establish the relevant scaling constraints for the tadpole.

Algorithmically solving the Tadpole Problem

The extensive computer-aided search applied in [arXiv:2010.10519] to find the minimal charge sourced by the fluxes that stabilize all the (flux-stabilizable) moduli of a smooth K3xK3 compactification uses differential evolutionary algorithms supplemented by local searches. We present these algorithms in detail and show that they can also solve our minimization problem for other lattices. Our results support the Tadpole Conjecture: The minimal charge grows linearly with the dimension of the lattice and, for K3xK3, this charge is larger than allowed by tadpole cancelation. Even if we are faced with an NP-hard lattice-reduction problem at every step in the minimization process, we find that differential evolution is a good technique for identifying the regions of the landscape where the fluxes with the lowest tadpole can be found. We then design a "Spider Algorithm," which is very efficient at exploring these regions and producing large numbers of minimal-tadpole configurations.

D7 Moduli Stabilization: The Tadpole Menace

D7-brane moduli are stabilized by worldvolume fluxes, which contribute to the D3-brane tadpole. We calculate this contribution in the Type IIB limit of F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds with a weak Fano base, and are able to prove a no-go theorem for vast swathes of the landscape of compactifications. When the genus of the curve dual to the D7 worldvolume fluxes is fixed and the number of moduli grows, we find that the D3 charge sourced by the fluxes grows faster than 7/16 of the number of moduli, which supports the Tadpole Conjecture of Ref.~\cite{Bena:2020xrh}. Our lower bound for the induced D3 charge decreases when the genus of the curves dual to the stabilizing fluxes increase, and does not allow to rule out a sliver of flux configurations dual to high-genus high-degree curves. However, we argue that most of these fluxes have very high curvature, which is likely to be above the string scale except on extremely large (and experimentally ruled out) compactification manifolds.

Gaugino mass term for D-branes and Generalized Complex Geometry

We compute the four-dimensional gaugino mass for a Dp-brane extended in spacetime and wrapping a cycle on the internal geometry in a warped compactification with fluxes. Motivated by the backreaction of gaugino bilinear VEVs, we use Generalized Complex Geometry to characterize the internal geometry as well as the cycle wrapped by the brane. We find that the RR fluxes and the non-closure of the generalized complex structures combine in the gaugino mass terms in the same form as they do in the bulk superpotential, while for the NSNS fluxes there is a crucial minus sign in the component normal to the brane. Our expression extends the known result for D3 and D7-branes in Calabi-Yau manifolds, where the gaugino masses are induced respectively by the imaginary anti-self dual and imaginary self-dual components of the complex 3-form flux $G_3$.

D3-brane model building and the supertrace rule

A common way to obtain standard-model-like Lagrangians in string theory is to place D3-branes inside flux compactifications. The bosonic and fermionic masses and couplings of the resulting gauge theory are determined by the ten-dimensional metric and the fluxes, respectively, and the breaking of supersymmetry is soft. However, not any soft-supersymmetry-breaking Lagrangian can be obtained this way since the string theory equations of motion impose certain relations between the soft couplings. We show that for D3-branes in background fluxes, these relations imply that the sums of the squares of the boson and of the fermion masses are equal and that, furthermore, one- and two-loop quantum corrections do not spoil this equality. This makes the use of D3-branes for constructing computationally controllable models for physics beyond the standard model problematic.

Generalized geometric vacua with eight supercharges

We investigate compactifications of type II and M-theory down to $AdS_5$ with generic fluxes that preserve eight supercharges, in the framework of Exceptional Generalized Geometry. The geometric data and gauge fields on the internal manifold are encoded in a pair of generalized structures corresponding to the vector and hyper-multiplets of the reduced five-dimensional supergravity. Supersymmetry translates into integrability conditions for these structures, generalizing, in the case of type IIB, the Sasaki-Einstein conditions. We show that the ten and eleven-dimensional type IIB and M-theory Killing-spinor equations specialized to a warped $AdS_5$ background imply the generalized integrability conditions.

Fermionic and bosonic mass deformations of N=4 SYM and their bulk supergravity dual

We examine the AdS-CFT dual of arbitrary (non)supersymmetric fermionic mass deformations of N=4 SYM, and investigate how the backreaction of the RR and NS-NS two-form potentials dual to the fermion masses contribute to Coulomb-branch potential of D3 branes, which we interpret as the bulk boson mass matrix. Using representation-theory and supergravity arguments we show that the fermion masses completely determine the trace of this matrix, and that on the other hand its traceless components have to be turned on as non-normalizable modes. Our result resolves the tension between the belief that the AdS bulk dual of the trace of the boson mass matrix (which is not a chiral operator) is a stringy excitation with dimension of order $(g_s N)^{1/4}$ and the existence of non-stringy supergravity flows describing theories where this trace is nonzero, by showing that the stringy mode does not parameterize the sum of the squares of the boson masses but rather its departure from the trace of the square of the fermion mass matrix. Hence, asymptotically-AdS flows can only describe holographically theories where the sums of the squares of the bosonic and fermionic masses are equal, which is consistent with the weakly-coupled result that only such theories can have a conformal UV fixed point.

M-theory moduli spaces and torsion-free structures

Motivated by the description of $\mathcal{N}=1$ M-theory compactifications to four-dimensions given by Exceptional Generalized Geometry, we propose a way to geometrize the M-theory fluxes by appropriately relating the compactification space to a higher-dimensional manifold equipped with a torsion-free structure. As a non-trivial example of this proposal, we construct a bijection from the set of $Spin(7)$-structures on an eight-dimensional $S^{1}$-bundle to the set of $G_{2}$-structures on the base space, fully characterizing the $G_{2}$-torsion clases when the total space is equipped with a torsion-free $Spin(7)$-structure. Finally, we elaborate on how the higher-dimensional manifold and its moduli space of torsion-free structures can be used to obtain information about the moduli space of M-theory compactifications.

Giant Tachyons in the Landscape

We study the dynamics of localized and fully backreacting anti-D3 branes at the tip of the Klebanov-Strassler geometry. We use a non-supersymmetric version of the Polchinski-Strassler analysis to compute the potential for anti-D3 branes to polarize into all kinds of five-brane shells in all possible directions. We find that generically there is a direction along which the brane-brane interaction is repulsive, which implies that anti-D3 branes are tachyonic. Hence, even though anti-D3 branes can polarize into five-branes, the solution will most likely be unstable. This indicates that anti-D3 brane uplift may not result in stable de Sitter vacua.

Spin(7)-manifolds in compactifications to four dimensions

We describe off-shell $\mathcal{N}=1$ M-theory compactifications down to four dimensions in terms of eight-dimensional manifolds equipped with a topological $Spin(7)$-structure. Motivated by the exceptionally generalized geometry formulation of M-theory compactifications, we consider an eight-dimensional manifold $\mathcal{M}_{8}$ equipped with a particular set of tensors $\mathfrak{S}$ that allow to naturally embed in $\mathcal{M}_{8}$ a family of $G_{2}$-structure seven-dimensional manifolds as the leaves of a codimension-one foliation. Under a different set of assumptions, $\mathfrak{S}$ allows to make $\mathcal{M}_{8}$ into a principal $S^{1}$ bundle, which is equipped with a topological $Spin(7)$-structure if the base is equipped with a topological $G_{2}$-structure. We also show that $\mathfrak{S}$ can be naturally used to describe regular as well as a singular elliptic fibrations on $\mathcal{M}_{8}$, which may be relevant for F-theory applications, and prove several mathematical results concerning the relation between topological $G_{2}$-structures in seven dimensions and topological $Spin(7)$-structures in eight dimensions.

Tachyonic Anti-M2 Branes

We study the dynamics of anti-M2 branes in a warped Stenzel solution with M2 charges dissolved in fluxes by taking into account their full backreaction on the geometry. The resulting supergravity solution has a singular magnetic four-form flux in the near-brane region. We examine the possible resolution of this singularity via the polarization of anti-M2 branes into M5 branes, and compute the corresponding polarization potential for branes smeared on the finite-size four-sphere at the tip of the Stenzel space. We find that the potential has no minimum. We then use the potential for smeared branes to compute the one corresponding to a stack of localized anti-M2 branes, and use this potential to compute the force between two anti-M2 branes at tip of the Stenzel space. We find that this force, which is zero in the probe approximation, is in fact repulsive. This surprising result points to a tachyonic instability of anti-M2 branes in backgrounds with M2 brane charge dissolved in flux.

The gauge structure of Exceptional Field Theories and the tensor hierarchy

We address the construction of manifest U-duality invariant generalized diffeomorphisms. The closure of the algebra requires an extension of the tangent space to include a tensor hierarchy indicating the existence of an underlying unifying structure, compatible with E_{11} and Borcherds algebras constructions. We begin with four-dimensional gauged maximal supergravity, and build a generalized Lie derivative that encodes all the gauge transformations of the theory. A generalized frame is introduced, which accommodates for all the degrees of freedom, including the tensor hierarchy. The generalized Lie derivative defines generalized field-dependent fluxes containing all the covariant quantities in the theory, and the closure conditions give rise to their corresponding Bianchi Identities. We then move towards the construction of a full generalized Lie derivative defined on an extended space, analyze the closure conditions, and explore the connection with that of maximal gauged supergravity via a generalized Scherk-Schwarz reduction, and with 11-dimensional supergravity.

The quantization problem in Scherk-Schwarz compactifications

We re-examine the quantization of structure constants, or equivalently the choice of lattice in the so-called flat group reductions, introduced originally by Scherk and Schwarz. Depending on this choice, the vacuum either breaks supersymmetry and lifts certain moduli, or preserves all supercharges and is identical to the one obtained from the torus reduction. Nonetheless the low-energy effective theory proposed originally by Scherk and Schwarz is a gauged supergravity that describes supersymmetry breaking and moduli lifting for all values of the structure constants. When the vacuum does not break supersymmetry, such a description turns out to be an artifact of the consistent truncation to left-invariant forms as illustrated for the example of ISO(2). We furthermore discuss the construction of flat groups in d dimensions and find that the Scherk--Schwarz algorithm is exhaustive. A classification of flat groups up to six dimensions and a discussion of all possible lattices is presented.

Gauged Double Field Theory

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for gauge invariance of the action of Double Field Theory (DFT) as well as closure of the algebra of gauge symmetries. The so-called weak and strong constraints are sufficient to satisfy them, but not necessary. We then analyze compactifications of DFT on twisted double tori satisfying the consistency conditions. The effective theory is a Gauged DFT where the gaugings come from the duality twists. The action, bracket, global symmetries, gauge symmetries and their closure are computed by twisting their analogs in the higher dimensional DFT. The non-Abelian heterotic string and lower dimensional gauged supergravities are particular examples of Gauged DFT.

Generalized N=1 and N=2 structures in M-theory and type II orientifolds

We consider M-theory and type IIA reductions to four dimensions with N=2 and N=1 supersymmetry and discuss their interconnection. Our work is based on the framework of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG), which extends the tangent bundle to include all symmetries in M-theory and type II string theory, covariantizing the local U-duality group E7. We describe general N=1 and N=2 reductions in terms of SU(7) and SU(6) structures on this bundle and thereby derive the effective four-dimensional N=1 and N=2 couplings, in particular we compute the Kahler and hyper-Kahler potentials as well as the triplet of Killing prepotentials (or the superpotential in the N=1 case). These structures and couplings can be described in terms of forms on an eight-dimensional tangent space where SL(8) contained in E7 acts, which might indicate a description in terms of an eight-dimensional internal space, similar to F-theory. We finally discuss an orbifold action in M-theory and its reduction to O6 orientifolds, and show how the projection on the N=2 structures selects the N=1 ones. We briefly comment on new orientifold projections, U-dual to the standard ones.

N=2 vacua in Generalized Geometry

We find the conditions on compactifications of type IIA to four-dimensional Minkowski space to preserve N=2 supersymmetry in the language of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG) and Generalized Complex Geometry (GCG). In EGG, off-shell N =2 supersymmetry requires the existence of a pair of SU(2)_R singlet and triplet algebraic structures on the exceptional generalized tangent space that encode all the scalars (NS-NS and R-R) in vector and hypermultiplets respectively. We show that on shell N=2 requires, except for a single component, these structures to be closed under a derivative twisted by the NS-NS and R-R fluxes. We also derive the corresponding GCG-type equations for the two pairs of pure spinors that build up these structures.

N=1 vacua in Exceptional Generalized Geometry

We study N=1 Minkowski vacua in compactifications of type II string theory in the language of exceptional generalized geometry (EGG). We find the differential equations governing the EGG analogues of the pure spinors of generalized complex geometry, namely the structures which parameterize the vector and hypermultiplet moduli spaces of the effective four-dimensional N=2 supergravity obtained after compactification. In order to do so, we identify a twisted differential operator that contains NS and RR fluxes and transforms covariantly under the U-duality group, E7(7). We show that the conditions for N=1 vacua correspond to a subset of the structures being closed under the twisted derivative.

Supersymmetric Consistent Truncations of IIB on T(1,1)

We study consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions of type IIB supergravity on T(1,1) down to five-dimensions. We find that the most general reduction containing singlets under the global SU(2)xSU(2) symmetry of T(1,1) is N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets with a particular gauging due to topological and geometric flux. Key to this reduction is several modes which have not been considered before in the literature and our construction allows us to easily show that the Papadopoulos - Tseytlin ansatz for IIB solutions on T(1,1) is a consistent truncation. This explicit reduction provides an organizing principle for the linearized spectrum around the warped deformed conifold as well as the baryonic branch and should have applications to the physics of flux compactifications with warped throats.

The backreaction of anti-D3 branes on the Klebanov-Strassler geometry

We present the full numerical solution for the 15-dimensional space of linearized deformations of the Klebanov-Strassler background which preserve the SU(2) X SU(2) X Z_2 symmetries. We identify within this space the solution corresponding to anti-D3 branes, (modulo the presence of a certain subleading singularity in the infrared). All the 15 integration constants of this solution are fixed in terms of the number of anti-D3 branes, and the solution differs in the UV from the supersymmetric solution into which it is supposed to decay by a mode corresponding to a rescaling of the field theory coordinates. Deciding whether two solutions that differ in the UV by a rescaling mode are dual to the same theory is involved even for supersymmetric Klebanov-Strassler solutions, and we explain in detail some of the subtleties associated to this.

On The Inflaton Potential From Antibranes in Warped Throats

We compute the force between a stack of smeared antibranes at the bottom of a warped throat and a stack of smeared branes at some distance up the throat, both for anti-D3 branes and for anti-M2 branes. We perform this calculation in two ways: first, by treating the antibranes as probes in the background sourced by the branes and second, by treating the branes as probes in the candidate background sourced by the antibranes. These two very different calculations yield exactly the same expression for the force, for all values of the brane-antibrane separation. This indicates that the force between a brane and an antibrane is not screened in backgrounds where there is positive charge dissolved in flux, and gives a way to precisely compute the inflaton potential in certain string cosmology scenarios.

A scan for new N=1 vacua on twisted tori

We perform a systematic search for N=1 Minkowski vacua of type II string theories on compact six-dimensional parallelizable nil- and solvmanifolds (quotients of six-dimensional nilpotent and solvable groups, respectively). Some of these manifolds have appeared in the construction of string backgrounds and are typically called twisted tori. We look for vacua directly in ten dimensions, using the a reformulation of the supersymmetry condition in the framework of generalized complex geometry. Certain algebraic criteria to establish compactness of the manifolds involved are also needed. Although the conditions for preserved N=1 supersymmetry fit nicely in the framework of generalized complex geometry, they are notoriously hard to solve when coupled to the Bianchi identities. We find solutions in a large-volume, constant-dilaton limit. Among these, we identify those that are T-dual to backgrounds of IIB on a conformal T^6 with self-dual three-form flux, and hence conceptually not new. For all backgrounds of this type fully localized solutions can be obtained. The other new solutions need multiple intersecting sources (either orientifold planes or combinations of O-planes and D-branes) to satisfy the Bianchi identities; the full list of such new solution is given. These are so far only smeared solutions, and their localization is yet unknown. Although valid in a large-volume limit, they are the first examples of Minkowski vacua in supergravity which are not connected by any duality to a Calabi-Yau. Finally, we discuss a class of flat solvmanifolds that may lead to AdS_4 vacua of type IIA strings.

SU(3) x SU(3) compactification and mirror duals of magnetic fluxes

This paper analyses type II string theories in backgrounds which admit an SU(3) x SU(3) structure. Such backgrounds are designed to linearly realize eight out of the original 32 supercharges and as a consequence the low-energy effective action can be written in terms of couplings which are closely related to the couplings of four-dimensional N=2 theories. This generalizes the previously studied case of SU(3) backgrounds in that the left- and right-moving sector each have a different globally defined spinor. Given a truncation to a finite number of modes, these backgrounds lead to a conventional four-dimensional low-energy effective theory. The results are manifestly mirror symmetric and give terms corresponding to the mirror dual couplings of Calabi-Yau compactifications with magnetic fluxes. It is argued, however, that generically such backgrounds are non-geometric and hence the supergravity analysis is not strictly valid. Remarkably, the naive generalization of the geometrical expressions nonetheless appears to give the correct low-energy effective theory.

T-duality, Generalized Geometry and Non-Geometric Backgrounds

We discuss the action of O(d,d), and in particular T-duality, in the context of generalized geometry, focusing on the description of so-called non-geometric backgrounds. We derive local expressions for the pure spinors descibing the generalized geometry dual to an SU(3) structure background, and show that the equations for N=1 vacua are invariant under T-duality. We also propose a local generalized geometrical definition of the charges f, H, Q and R appearing in effective four-dimensional theories, using the Courant bracket. We then address certain global aspects, in particular whether the local non-geometric charges can be gauged away in, for instance, backgrounds admitting a torus action, as well as the structure of generalized parallelizable backgrounds.

Type II Strings and Generalized Calabi-Yau Manifolds

This is a short version of hep-th/0406137. We show that the supersymmetry transformations for type II string theories on six-manifolds can be written as differential conditions on a pair of pure spinors, the exponentiated Kahler form e^{iJ} and the holomorphic form Omega. The equations are explicitly symmetric under exchange of the two pure spinors and a choice of even or odd-rank RR field. This is mirror symmetry for manifolds with torsion. Moreover, RR fluxes affect only one of the two equations: e^{iJ} is closed under the action of the twisted exterior derivative in IIA theory, and similarly Omega is closed in IIB. This means that supersymmetric SU(3)-structure manifolds are always complex in IIB while they are twisted symplectic in IIA. Modulo a different action of the B-field, these are all generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds, as defined by Hitchin.
