Gauge/gravity dual dynamics for the strongly coupled sector of composite Higgs models

A holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking is used to study the dynamics plus the meson and baryon spectrum of the underlying strong dynamics in composite Higgs models. The model is inspired by top-down D-brane constructions. We introduce this model by applying it to $N_f=2$ QCD. We compute meson masses, decay constants and the nucleon mass. The spectrum is improved by including higher dimensional operators to reflect the UV physics of QCD. Moving to composite Higgs models, we impose perturbative running for the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate in a variety of theories with varying number of colors and flavours. We compare our results in detail to lattice simulations for the following theories: $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two Dirac fundamentals; $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet matter; and $SU(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet quarks. In each case, the holographic results are encouraging since they are close to lattice results for masses and decay constants. Moreover, our models allow us to compute additional observables not yet computed on the lattice, to relax the quenched approximation and move to the precise fermion content of more realistic composite Higgs models not possible on the lattice. We also provide a new holographic description of the top partners including their masses and structure functions. With the addition of higher dimension operators, we show the top Yukawa coupling can be made of order one, to generate the observed top mass. Finally, we predict the spectrum for the full set of models with top partners proposed by Ferretti and Karateev.

Gauge/gravity dynamics for composite Higgs models and the top mass

We provide gauge/gravity dual descriptions of the strong coupling sector of composite Higgs models using insights from non-conformal examples of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We calculate particle masses and decay constants for proposed Sp(4) and SU(4) gauge theories, where there is the best lattice data for comparison. Our results compare favorably to lattice studies and go beyond those due to a greater flexibility in choosing the fermion content. That content changes the running dynamics and its choice can lead to sizable changes in the bound state masses. We describe top partners by a dual fermionic field in the bulk. Including suitable higher dimension operators can ensure a top mass consistent with the standard model.

Holography of Strongly Coupled Gauge Theories

The "periodic table" of strongly coupled gauge theories remains only sketchily understood. Holography has developed to the point where bottom up constructions can describe the spectrum of individual gauge theories (based on assumptions of their running) including quarks in different representations and higher dimension operators. I highlight the method with a "perfected" version of an AdS dual of QCD and results for composite higgs models with two representations of quarks. The method raises questions about the degree to which energy scales can be split in generic gauge theories including whether confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are linked.

Deconfined, Massive Quark Phase at High Density and Compact Stars: A Holographic Study

In Hoyos et al. (arXiv:1603.02943) a holographic D3/D7 system was used to describe a deconfined yet massive quark phase of QCD at finite density, concluding that the equation of state of such a phase was not stiff enough to support exotic dense stars. That analysis used a hard quark mass to represent the dynamical mass and assumed a conformal gauge background. Here we phenomenologically adjust the D3/D7 system to include a running anomalous dimension for the quark condensate. This introduces a dynamical mechanism for chiral symmetry breaking yet the model still has a deconfined massive phase at intermediate densities. We show that these systems, dependent on the running profile in the deep IR, generate much stiffer equations of state and non-monotonic behaviour in the speed of sound. The results suggest that these equations of state may be closer to supporting hybrid stars with quark cores.

Holographic quark matter with colour superconductivity and a stiff equation of state for compact stars

We present a holographic model of QCD with a first order chiral restoration phase transition with chemical potential, mu. The first order behaviour follows from allowing a discontinuity in the dual description as the quarks are integrated out below their constituent mass. The model predicts a deconfined yet massive quark phase at intermediate densities (350 MeV< mu <500 MeV), above the nuclear density phase, which has a very stiff equation of state and a speed of sound close to one. We also include a holographic description of a colour superconducting condensate in the chirally restored vacuum and study the resulting equation of state. They provides a well behaved first order transition from the deconfined massive quark phase at very high density (mu>500 MeV). We solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations with the resulting equations of state and find stable hybrid stars with quark cores. We compute the tidal deformability for these hybrid stars and show they are consistent with LIGO/Virgo data on a neutron star collision. Our holographic model shows that quark matter could be present at the core of such compact stars.

Holographic Wilson Lines as Screened Impurities

In Landau Fermi liquids, screened impurities support quasi-bound states, representing electrons bound to the impurity but making virtual excursions away. Signals of these quasi-bound states are electron-impurity scattering phase shifts and the corresponding resonances in cross sections. We consider large-$N$, strongly-coupled $(3+1)$-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on the Coulomb branch, where an adjoint scalar has a non-zero expectation value that breaks $SU(N) \to SU(N-1) \times U(1)$. In the holographic dual we re-visit well-known solutions for a probe D3-brane that describe this theory with a symmetric-representation Wilson line "impurity." We present evidence that the adjoint scalar screens the Wilson line, by showing that quasi-bound states form at the impurity, producing $U(1)$-impurity scattering phase shifts and corresponding resonances in cross sections. The quasi-bound states appear holographically as quasi-normal modes of probe D3-brane fields, even in the absence of a black hole horizon, via a mechanism that we argue is generic to screened defects in holography. We also argue that well-known generalisations of these probe D3-brane solutions can describe lattices of screened Wilson/'t Hooft line impurities.

Low mu and imaginary mu signals of a critical point in the phase diagram of an exactly soluble chiral symmetry breaking theory

Holography has allowed the exact solution of a small number of large Nc gauge theories. Amongst these is an N=2 SYM theory of quarks interacting with N=4 gauge fields. The temperature chemical potential phase diagram for this theory in the presence of a magnetic field is exactly known and shows first and second order chiral symmetry restoration transitions and a critical point. Here we extend this phase diagram to imaginary chemical potential to seek structure at small real mu and imaginary mu that help to reconstruct the large real mu phase structure. We also explore a phenomenologically deformed version of the theory where the critical point can be moved into the imaginary chemical potential plane. In particular we observe that when the transition is second order in these theories there are naturally two distinct transitions - one for the onset of density and one for chiral symmetry restoration. In addition, the phase diagram has boundaries of regions where metastable vacua exist and these boundaries, as well as the phase boundaries, converge at the critical point. These observations may point to techniques for the study of the QCD critical point either on the lattice or using heavy ion collision data.

Any Room Left for Technicolor? Holographic Studies of NJL Assisted Technicolour

We use a holographic description of technicolor dynamics to study gauge theories that only break chiral symmetry when aided by a strong four fermion interaction. These Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) assisted technicolor models provide examples of different dynamics from walking technicolor which can, by tuning, generate a light higgs like $σ$ meson. We compute the vector meson ($ρ$) and axial vector meson (A) spectrum for a variety of models with techni-quarks in the fundamental representation, enlarging the available parameter space over a previous analysis of walking theories. These predictions determine the parameter space of a low energy effective description where LHC constraints from dilepton channels have already been applied. Many of the models with low numbers of electroweak doublets still lie beyond current constraints and motivate exploration of new signatures beyond dilepton for LHC and a 100 TeV proton collider.

Light composite fermions from holography

Motivated by Beyond the Standard Model theories of composite fermions or top partners, we propose a holographic mechanism that generates light baryonic states in a strongly coupled gauge theory. The starting point are the fermionic fluctuations of massive probe branes embedded into AdS$_5 \times S^5$. We first consider the D3/probe D7-brane system. We derive in detail the fermionic fluctuation equations and show the supersymmetric degeneracy of the mesinos with the mesons. Here we view the fermionic mesinos as potential realizations of composite fermions or top partners. We then add higher dimension operators and study their impact on the mesino spectrum. In particular we show that the ground state mesino mass can be pushed to an arbitrarily light value by a suitable choice of the coupling of the higher dimension operator, $g$. No matter the value of $g$, the masses of higher excited states never fall below the mass of the ground state at $g=0$. We also present similar results for the supersymmetric D3/D3 and D3/D5 systems.

Holographic Nambu Jona-Lasinio Interactions

NJL interactions are introduced into the D3/ probe D7 system using Witten's double trace operator prescription which includes the operator as a classical term in the effective potential. In the supersymmetric system they do not induce chiral symmetry breaking which we attribute to the flat effective potential with quark mass in the supersymmetric theory. If additional supersymmetry breaking is introduced then standard NJL behaviour is realized. In examples where chiral symmetry breaking is not preferred such as with a B field plus an IR cut off chiral condensation is triggered by the NJL interaction at a second order transition after a finite critical coupling. If the model already contains chiral symmetry breaking, for example in the B field case with no IR cut off, then the NJL interaction enhances the quark mass at all values of the NJL coupling. We also consider the system at finite temperature: the temperature discourages condensation but when combined with a magnetic field we find regions of parameter space where the NJL interaction triggers a first order chiral transition above a critical coupling.

Inverse Magnetic Catalysis in Bottom-Up Holographic QCD

We explore the effect of magnetic field on chiral condensation in QCD via a simple bottom up holographic model which inputs QCD dynamics through the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear. Bottom up holography is a form of effective field theory and we use it to explore the dependence on the coefficients of the two lowest order terms linking the magnetic field and the quark condensate. In the massless theory, we identify a region of parameter space where magnetic catalysis occurs at zero temperature but inverse magnetic catalysis at temperatures of order the thermal phase transition. The model shows similar non-monotonic behaviour in the condensate with B at intermediate T as the lattice data. This behaviour is due to the separation of the meson melting and chiral transitions in the holographic framework. The introduction of quark mass raises the scale of B where inverse catalysis takes over from catalysis until the inverse catalysis lies outside the regime of validity of the effective description leaving just catalysis.

Translational Symmetry Breaking in Higgs & Gauge Theory, and the Cosmological Constant

We argue, at a very basic effective field theory level, that higher dimension operators in scalar theories that break symmetries at scales close to their ultraviolet completion cutoff, include terms that favour the breaking of translation (Lorentz) invariance, potentially resulting in striped, chequered board or general crystal-like phases. Such descriptions can be thought of as the effective low energy description of QCD-like gauge theories near their strong coupling scale where terms involving higher dimension operators are generated. Our low energy theory consists of scalar fields describing operators such as $\bar{q} q$ and $\bar{q} F^{(2n)} q$. Such scalars can have kinetic mixing terms that generate effective momentum dependent contributions to the mass matrix. We show that these can destabilize the translationally invariant vacuum. It is possible that in some real gauge theory such operators could become sufficiently dominant to realize such phases and it would be interesting to look for them in lattice simulations. We present a holographic model of the same phenomena which includes RG running. A key phenomenological motive to look at such states is recent work that shows that the non-linear response in $R^2$ gravity to such short range fluctuations can mimic a cosmological constant. Intriguingly in a cosmology with such a Starobinsky inflation term, to generate the observed value of the present day acceleration would require stripes at the electroweak scale. Unfortunately, low energy phenomenological constraints on Lorentz violation in the electron-photon system appear to strongly rule out any such possibility outside of a disconnected dark sector.

Soft Walls in Dynamic AdS/QCD and the Techni-dilaton

Dynamic AdS/QCD is a modification of AdS/QCD that includes the running of the anomalous dimension of the q-bar q quark bilinear and in which the generation of the constituent quark mass plays the role of an IR wall. The model allows one to move away smoothly from the controlled spectrum of the N=2 super Yang-Mills theory of the D3/probe-D7 system to more QCD-like theories with chiral symmetry breaking. We investigate soft wall behaviour in the model that gives Regge trajectories with M_{n,s}^2 ~ n,s. To achieve these behaviours requires the quark's constituent mass to fall peculiarly sharply in the IR so that meson physics is sensitive to RG scales well below the quark's on-shell mass. Including soft wall behaviour in models of walking gauge dynamics breaks the near conformal symmetry which is present above the quark on-shell mass which can generate a large mass for the techni-dilaton like state. We conclude that the meson spectrum is rather sensitive to the IR decoupling.

Holographic Graphene in a Cavity

The effective strength of EM interactions can be controlled by confining the fields to a cavity and these effects might be used to push graphene into a strongly coupled regime. We study the similar D3/probe D5 system on a compact space and discuss the gravity dual for a cavity between two mirrors. We show that the introduction of a conformal symmetry breaking length scale introduces a mass gap on a single D5 sheet. Bilayer configurations display exciton condensation between the sheets. There is a first order phase transition away from the exciton condensate if a strong enough magnetic field is applied. We finally map out the phase structure of these systems in a cavity with the presence of mirror reflections of the probes - a mass gap may form through exciton condensation with the mirror image.

Hyper-Scaling Relations in the Conformal Window from Dynamic AdS/QCD

Dynamic AdS/QCD is a holographic model of strongly coupled gauge theories with the dynamics included through the running anomalous dimension of the quark bilinear, gamma. We apply it to describe the physics of massive quarks in the conformal window of SU(N_c) gauge theories with N_f fundamental flavours, assuming the perturbative two loop running for gamma. We show that to find regular, holographic, renormalization group flows in the infra-red the decoupling of the quark flavours at the scale of the mass is important and enact it through suitable boundary conditions when the flavours become on shell. We can then compute the quark condensate and the mesonic spectrum (M_rho, M_pi, M_sigma) and decay constants. We compute their scaling dependence on the quark mass for a number of examples. The model matches perturbative expectations for large quark mass and naive dimensional analysis (including the anomalous dimensions) for small quark mass. The model allows study of the intermediate regime where there is an additional scale from the running of the coupling and we present results for the deviation of scalings from assuming only the single scale of the mass.

Meson spectra of asymptotically free gauge theories from holography

Using holography, we study the low-lying mesonic spectrum of a range of asymptotically free gauge theories. First we revisit a simple top-down holographic model of QCD-like dynamics with predictions in the M_rho-M_pi plane. The meson masses in this model are in very good agreement with lattice gauge theory calculations in the quenched approximation. We show that the key ingredient for the meson mass predictions is the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate, gamma. This provides an explanation for the agreement of holographic and quenched lattice gauge theory calculations. We then study the `Dynamic AdS/QCD model' in which the gauge theory dynamics is included by a choice for the running of gamma. We use the naive two-loop perturbative running of the gauge coupling extrapolated to the non-perturbative regime to estimate the running of gamma across a number of theories. We consider models with quarks in the fundamental, adjoint, two-index symmetric and two-index anti-symmetric representations. We display predictions for M_rho, M_pi, M_sigma and the lightest glueball mass. Many of these theories, where the contribution to the running of gamma is dominated by the gluons, give very similar spectra, which also match with lattice expectations for QCD. On the other hand, a significant difference between spectra in different holographic models is seen for theories where the quark content changes the gradient of the running of gamma around the scale at which chiral symmetry breaking is triggered at gamma approximately 1. For these walking theories we see an enhancement of the rho-mass and a suppression of the sigma-mass. Both phenomena are characteristic for walking behaviour in the physical meson masses.

Dynamic AdS/QCD and the Spectrum of Walking Gauge Theories

We present a simple AdS/QCD model in which the formation of the chiral condensate is dynamically determined. The gauge dynamics is input through the running of the quark bilinear's anomalous dimension, gamma. The condensate provides a dynamically generated infra-red wall in the computation of mesonic bound state masses and decay constants. As an example, we use the model, with perturbative computations of the running of gamma, to study SU(3) gauge theory with a continuous number of quark flavours, Nf. We follow the behaviour of the spectrum as we approach the conformal window through a walking gauge theory regime. We show such walking theories display a BKT phase transition, with Miransky scaling, as one approaches the edge of the conformal window at the critical value of Nf. We show that these walking theories possess an enhanced quark condensate, a light Higgs like excitation and argue that the non-perturbative contribution to S falls to zero. We also study the deformation of the BKT transition when the quarks have a current mass which may be of use for understanding lattice simulations of walking theories.

Holographic Modelling of a Light Techni-Dilaton

We present a simplified holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking in gauge theory. The chiral condensate is represented by a single scalar field in AdS, with the gauge dynamics input through radial dependence of its mass, representing the running of the anomalous dimension of the qbar q operator. We discuss simple examples of the chiral transition out of the conformal window when the infrared value of the anomalous dimension, γ_m, is tuned to one (equivalently the AdS-scalar mass squared is tuned to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound of -4). The output of the model are the masses of the $\bar{q} q$ scalar meson bound states. We show in an explicit example that if the gradient of the running of the anomalous dimension falls to zero at the scale where the BF bound violation occurs, so that the theory becomes near conformal, then the theory possesses a techni-dilaton state that is parametrically lighter than the dynamically generated quark mass. Indeed the full spectrum of excited meson states also become light (relative to the techni-quark mass) as they approach a conformal spectrum.

Vacuum alignment and phase structure of holographic bi-layers

We study the D3/probe D5 system with two domain wall hypermultiplets. The conformal symmetry can be broken by a magnetic field, B, (or running coupling) which promotes condensation of the fermions on each individual domain wall. Separation of the domain walls promotes condensation of the fermions between one wall and the other. We study the competition between these two effects showing a first order phase transition when the separation is ~ 0.56 lambda^1/4 B^-1/2. We identify extremal brane configurations which exhibit both condensations simultaneously but they are not the preferred ground state.

Vector meson production at low x from gauge/gravity duality

We use gauge/gravity duality to study vector meson (J/Ψ, ρ_0, Ω, Φ) production in electron-proton scattering, in the limit of high center of mass energy at fixed momentum transfer, corresponding to the limit of low Bjorken x, where the process is dominated by pomeron exchange. Our approach considers the pomeron at strong coupling, described by the graviton Regge trajectory in AdS space with a hard-wall to mimic confinement effects. Both the proton and vector mesons are described by simple holographic wave functions in AdS. This model agrees with HERA H1 data with a χ^2 per degree of freedom below one on total cross-sections, and below two on differential cross-sections, confirming the success of previous studies that model low x DIS and DVCS using gauge/gravity duality.

Holographic Description of the QCD Phase Diagram and Out of Equilibrium Dynamics

Holography provides a powerful tool to model QCD and other strongly coupled gauge dynamics. Holography of the Conformal Window

Inspired by the model of Jarvinen and Kiritsis, we present a simple holographic model for the on set of chiral symmetry breaking at the edge of the conformal window in QCD in the Veneziano limit. Our most naive model enforces the QCD two loop running coupling on a D3/D7 holographic brane system. The mass of the holographic field, describing the chiral condensate in the model, is driven below the BF bound when the running is sufficiently strong, triggering chiral symmetry breaking for N_f/N_c<2.9. This model though contains too great a remnant of supersymmetry and does not correctly encode the perturbative anomalous dimensions of QCD. In a second model we impose the QCD anomalous dimension result and find chiral symmetry breaking sets in for N_f/N_c=4 at a BKT-type phase transition. In this case the transition is triggered when the anomalous dimension of the mass operator γ_m=1.

The Baryonic Phase in Holographic Descriptions of the QCD Phase Diagram

We study holographic models of the QCD temperature-chemical potential phase diagram based on the D3/D7 system with chiral symmetry breaking. The baryonic phase may be included through linked D5-D7 systems. In a previous analysis of a model with a running gauge coupling a baryonic phase was shown to exist to arbitrarily large chemical potential. Here we explore this phase in a more generic phenomenological setting with a step function dilaton profile. The change in dilaton generates a linear confining $\bar{q}q$ potential and opposes the screening effect of temperature. We show that the persistence of the baryonic phase depends on the step size and that QCD-like phase diagrams can be described. The baryonic phase's existence is qualitatively linked to the existence of confinement in Wilson loop computations in the background.

Towards a Holographic Model of the QCD Phase Diagram

We describe the temperature-chemical potential phase diagrams of holographic models of a range of strongly coupled gauge theories that display chiral symmetry breaking/restoration transitions. The models are based on the D3/probe-D7 system but with a phenomenologically chosen running coupling/dilaton profile. We realize chiral phase transitions with either temperature or density that are first or second order by changing the dilaton profile. Although the models are only caricatures of QCD they show that holographic models can capture many aspects of the QCD phase diagram and hint at the dependence on the running coupling.

Chiral phase transitions and quantum critical points of the D3/D7(D5) system with mutually perpendicular E and B fields at finite temperature and density

We study chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature and density in gauge theories subject to mutually perpendicular electric and magnetic fields using holography. We determine the chiral symmetry breaking phase structure of the D3/D7 and D3/D5 systems in the temperature-density-electric field directions. A magnetic field may break the chiral symmetry and an additional electric field induces Ohm and Hall currents as well as restoring the chiral symmetry. At zero temperature the D3/D5 system displays a line of holographic BKT phase transitions in the density-electric field plane, while the D3/D7 system shows a mean-field phase transition. At intermediate temperatures, the transitions in the density-electric field plane are of first order at low density, transforming to second order at critical points as density rises. At high temperature the transition is only ever first order.

E, B, μ, T Phase Structure of the D3/D7 Holographic Dual

The large N_c N=4 gauge theory with quenched N=2 quark matter displays chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of a magnetic field. We previously studied the temperature and chemical potential phase structure of this theory in the grand canonical ensemble - here we, in addition, include the effect of an electric field which acts to counter chiral symmetry breaking by disassociating mesons. We compute using the gravity dual based on the D3/probe-D7 brane system. The theory displays two transition at one of which chiral symmetry is restored. At the other transition density switches on, the mesons of the theory become unstable and a current forms, making it a conductor-insulator transition. Through the temperature, electric field, chemical potential volume (at fixed magnetic field parallel to the electric field) these transitions can coincide or separate at critical points, and be first order or second order. We map out this full phase structure which provides varied computable examples relevant to strongly coupled gauge theories and potentially condensed matter systems.

Holographic Wilsonian Renormalization and Chiral Phase Transitions

We explore the role of a holographic Wilsonian cut-off in simple probe brane models with chiral symmetry breaking/restoration phase transitions. The Wilsonian cut-off allows us to define supergravity solutions for off-shell configurations and hence to define a potential for the chiral condensate. We pay particular attention to the need for configurations whose action we are comparing to have the same IR and UV boundary conditions. We exhibit new first and second order phase transitions with changing cut-off. We derive the effective potential for the condensate including mean field and BKT type continuous transitions.

We study the full temperature and chemical potential dependence of the D3/D5 2+1 dimensional theory in the presence of a magnetic field. The theory displays separate transitions associated with chiral symmetry breaking and melting of the bound states. We display the phase diagram which has areas with first and second order transitions meeting at two critical points similar to that of the D3/D7 system. In addition there is the recently reported BKT transition at zero temperature leading to distinct structure at low temperatures.

Holographic Description of the Phase Diagram of a Chiral Symmetry Breaking Gauge Theory

The large N_c N=4 gauge theory with quenched N=2 quark matter in the presence of a magnetic field displays chiral symmetry breaking. We study the temperature and chemical potential dependence of this theory using its gravity dual (based on the D3/D7 brane system). With massless quarks, at zero chemical potential, the theory displays a first order thermal transition where chiral symmetry is restored and simultaneously the mesons of the theory melt. At zero temperature, these transitions with chemical potential are second order and occur at different chemical potential values. Between the three there are two tri-critical points, the positions of which we identify. At finite quark mass the second order transition for chiral symmetry becomes a cross over and there is a critical point at the end of the first order transition, while the meson melting transition remains similar to the massless quark case. We track the movement of the critical points as the mass is raised relative to the magnetic field.

Holography of a Composite Inflaton

We study the time evolution of a brane construction that is holographically dual to a strongly coupled gauge theory that dynamically breaks a global symmetry through the generation of an effective composite Higgs vev. The D3/D7 system with a background magnetic field or non-trivial gauge coupling (dilaton) profile displays the symmetry breaking. We study motion of the D7 brane in the background of the D3 branes. For small field inflation in the field theory the effective Higgs vev rolls from zero to the true vacuum value. We study what phenomenological dilaton profile generates the slow rolling needed, hence learning how the strongly coupled gauge theory's coupling must run. We note that evolution of our configuration in the holographic direction, representing the phyiscs of the strong interactions, can provide additional slowing of the roll time. Inflation seems to be favoured if the coupling changes by only a small amount or very gently. We speculate on how such a scenario could be realized away from N=4 gauge theory, for example, in a walking gauge theory.

Non Mean-Field Quantum Critical Points from Holography

We construct a class of quantum critical points with non-mean-field critical exponents via holography. Our approach is phenomenological. Beginning with the D3/D5 system at nonzero density and magnetic field which has a chiral phase transition, we simulate the addition of a third control parameter. We then identify a line of quantum critical points in the phase diagram of this theory, provided that the simulated control parameter has dimension less than two. This line smoothly interpolates between a second-order transition with mean-field exponents at zero magnetic field to a holographic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at larger magnetic fields. The critical exponents of these transitions only depend upon the parameters of an emergent infrared theory. Moreover, the non-mean-field scaling is destroyed at any nonzero temperature. We discuss how generic these transitions are.

Non-equilibrium physics at a holographic chiral phase transition

The D3/D7 system holographically describes an N=2 gauge theory which spontaneously breaks a chiral symmetry by the formation of a quark condensate in the presence of a magnetic field. At finite temperature it displays a first order phase transition. We study out of equilibrium dynamics associated with this transition by placing probe D7 branes in a geometry describing a boost-invariant expanding or contracting plasma. We use an adiabatic approximation to track the evolution of the quark condensate in a heated system and reproduce the phase structure expected from equilibrium dynamics. We then study solutions of the full partial differential equation that describes the evolution of out of equilibrium configurations to provide a complete description of the phase transition including describing aspects of bubble formation.

Hadronization at the AdS wall

We describe hadronization events, using the AdS/CFT Correspondence, which display many of the qualitative features expected in QCD. In particular we study the motion of strings with separating end points in a back-reacted hard wall geometry. The solutions show the development of a linear QCD-like string. The end points oscillate in the absence of string breaking. We introduce string breaking by hand and evolve the new state forward in time to observe the separation of two string segments. A kink associated with this breaking evolves to the end points of the string inducing rho meson production. We explicitly compute the rho meson production at the end point.

Holographic integral equations and walking technicolour

We study chiral symmetry breaking in the holographic D3-D7 system in a simple model with an arbitrary running coupling. We derive equations for the D7 embedding and show there is a light pion. In particular we present simple integral equations, involving just the running coupling and the quark self energy, for the quark condensate and the pion decay constant. We compare these to the Pagels-Stokar or constituent quark model equivalent. We discuss the implications for walking Technicolour theories. We also perform a similar analysis in the four dimensional field theory whose dual is the non-supersymmetric D3-D5 system and propose that it represents a walking theory in which the quark condensate has dimension 2 + sqrt{3}.

Heavy-Light Mesons from the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We propose a holographic description of heavy-light mesons, i.e. of mesons containing a light and a heavy quark. In the semi-classical string limit, we look at the dynamics of strings tied between two D7 branes. We consider this setup both in an AdS background and in the non-supersymmetric Constable-Myers geometry which induces chiral symmetry breaking. We compute the meson masses in each case. Finally we discuss the relevance of this result for phenomenological comparison to the physical b-quark sector.

A surprisingly good holographic description of QCD can be obtained from naive five dimensional gauge theory on a truncated AdS space. We seek to improve the infra-red description of QCD in such models by using a more sophisticated metric and an action derived from string theory duals of chiral symmetry breaking. Our metric is smooth into the infra-red and the chiral condensate is a prediction of the dynamics. The theory reproduces QCD meson data at the 10% level.

Mesons in Gauge/Gravity Duals - A Review

We review recent progress in studying mesons within gauge/gravity duality, in the context of adding flavour degrees of freedom to generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our main focus is on the `top-down approach' of considering models constructed within string theory. We explain the string-theoretical constructions in detail, aiming at non-specialists. These give rise to a new way of describing strongly coupled confining large N gauge gauge theories similar to large N QCD. In particular, we consider gravity dual descriptions of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and compare with lattice results. A further topic covered is the behaviour of flavour bound states in finite temperature field theories dual to a gravity background involving a black hole. We also describe the `bottom up' phenomenological approach to mesons within AdS/QCD. -- Some previously unpublished results are also included.

In the supergravity dual, the effect of the operator is known to correspond to a deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 ``throat'' which restores the asymptotic ten dimensional Minkowski region of spacetime, completing the full D3-brane solution. The system at non-zero T is interesting, since at the extremes of some of the geometrical parameters the geometry interpolates between a seven dimensional spherical Minkowskian Schwarzschild black hole (times R^3) and a five dimensional flat AdS Schwarzschild black hole (times S^5). We observe that when the coupling of the operator reaches a critical value, the deconfined phase, which is represented by the geometry with horizon, disappears for all temperatures, returning the system to a confined phase which is represented by the thermalised extremal geometry.

Secrets of the Metric In N=4 and N=2* Geometries

The metric of the gravity dual of a field theory should contain precisely the same information as the field theory. We discuss this connection in the N=4 theory where a scalar vev may be introducedat the level of 5d supergravity and the solutions lifted to 10d. We stress the role of brane probing in finding the coordinates appropriate to the field theory. In these coordinates the metric parametrizes the gauge invariant operators of the field theory and either side of the duality is uniquely determined by the other. We follow this same chain of computations for the 10d lift of the N=2* geometry of Pilch and Warner. The brane probe of the metric reveals the 2d moduli space and the functional form of the gauge coupling. In the coordinates appropriate to the field theory the metric on moduli space takes a very simple form and one can read off the gravity predictions for operators in the field theory. Surprisingly there is logarithmic renormalization even in the far UV where the field theory reverts to N=4 super Yang-Mills. We extend the analysis of Buchel et al to find the D3 brane source distribution that generates the supergravity prediction for the gauge coupling for the whole class of solutions corresponding to different points on moduli space. This distribution does not account for the logarithmic behaviour in the rest of the metric though. We discuss possible resolutions of the discrepancy.

Superfluidity in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

A chemical potential may be introduced into the AdS/CFT correspondence by setting the D3 branes of the construction spinning. In the field theory the fermionic modes are expected to condense as Cooper pairs, although at zero temperature the chemical potential destabilizes the scalar sector of the N=4 theory obscuring this phenomena. We show, in the case where a chemical potential is introduced for a small number of the gauge colours, that there is a metastable vacuum for the scalar fields where fermionic Cooper pairing is apparently manifest. In this vacuum the D3 branes expand non-commutatively (to balance the centrifugal force) into a D5 brane, in a mechanism analogous to Harmark and Savvidy's (M)atrix theory construction of a spinning D2 brane. We show that the D5 brane acts as a source for the RR 3-form whose UV scaling and symmetries are those of a fermion bilinear. The D5 brane rotates within the S^5 and so decays by the emission of RR fields which we interpret as the metastable vacuum decaying via higher dimension operators.

Flavour Universal Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

The top condensate see-saw mechanism of Dobrescu and Hill allows electroweak symmetry to be broken while deferring the problem of flavour to an electroweak singlet, massive sector. We provide an extended version of the singlet sector that naturally accommodates realistic masses for all the standard model fermions, which play an equal role in breaking electroweak symmetry. The models result in a relatively light composite Higgs sector with masses typically in the range of (400-700)~GeV. In more complete models the dynamics will presumably be driven by a broken gauged family or flavour symmetry group. As an example of the higher scale dynamics a fully dynamical model of the quark sector with a GIM mechanism is presented, based on an earlier top condensation model of King using broken family gauge symmetry interactions (that model was itself based on a technicolour model of Georgi). The crucial extra ingredient is a reinterpretation of the condensates that form when several gauge groups become strong close to the same scale. A related technicolour model of Randall which naturally includes the leptons too may also be adapted to this scenario. We discuss the low energy constraints on the massive gauge bosons and scalars of these models as well as their phenomenology at the TeV scale.

An Extended Technicolor Model With QCD-like Symmetry Breaking

We present a one-doublet extended technicolor model, with all fermions in fundamental representations. The bare lagrangian has no explicit mass terms but generates masses through gauge symmetry breaking by purely QCD-like dynamics. The model generates three families of quarks and leptons and can accommodate the observed third family mass spectrum (including a large top mass and light neutrinos). In addition, we show how the model may be extended to incorporate a top color driven top mass without the need for a strong U(1) interaction. We discuss the compatiblity of the model with experimental constraints and its possible predicitive power with respect to first and second family masses.

FERMION MASSES IN EXTENDED TECHNICOLOUR

Talks presented at Beyond The Standard Model IV Conference, Lake Tahoe, Dec 94: NEW FERMION FAMILIES AND PRECISION ELECTROWEAK DATA: We highlight a trend in the precision electroweak data towards light new physics and argue that some spectra of strongly interacting technifamilies are plausibly compatible with the data. FERMION MASSES IN EXTENDED TECHNICOLOUR: An ETC model with a minimal number of operators responsible for fermion masses that break the global symmetries in the observed manner postdicts the light quark masses. The up down mass inversion may be explained by the inclusion of a family symmetric ansatz for the CKM matrix angles.

Fermion Mass Postdictions in a Generalized Extended Technicolour Scenario

We review the recent discussion in the literature of one family extended technicolour models with techni-fermion mass spectra compatible with the experimental data for the precision parameters S,T,U,V, W and X and ETC interactions compatible with the LEP measurements of the $Z\to b{\bar b}$ vertex. To investigate whether these scenarios are consistent with the third family fermion masses we develop a generalized ETC model in which ETC interactions are represented by four Fermi interactions. We discuss in detail the reliability of the gap equation approximation to the non-perturbative dynamics. Two generic scenarios of couplings fit the precision data and third family masses; one is an unpredicitive existence proof, the other, which generates the large top mass by direct top condensation, has a minimal number of interactions that break the global symmetry of the light fermions in the observed manner. This latter scenario makes surprisingly good predictions of the charm, strange and up quark masses.
