Berry phases, wormholes and factorization in AdS/CFT

For two-dimensional holographic CFTs, we demonstrate the role of Berry phases for relating the non-factorization of the Hilbert space to the presence of wormholes. The wormholes are characterized by a non-exact symplectic form that gives rise to the Berry phase. For wormholes connecting two spacelike regions in gravitational spacetimes, we find that the non-exactness is linked to a variable appearing in the phase space of the boundary CFT. This variable corresponds to a loop integral in the bulk. Through this loop integral, non-factorization becomes apparent in the dual entangled CFTs. Furthermore, we classify Berry phases in holographic CFTs based on the type of dual bulk diffeomorphism involved. We distinguish between Virasoro, gauge and modular Berry phases, each corresponding to a spacetime wormhole geometry in the bulk. Using kinematic space, we extend a relation between the modular Hamiltonian and the Berry curvature to the finite temperature case. We find that the Berry curvature, given by the Crofton form, characterizes the topological transition of the entanglement entropy in presence of a black hole.

Fractional Klein-Gordon Equation on AdS$_{2+1}$

We propose a covariant definition of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation with long-range interactions independent of the metric of the underlying manifold. As an example we consider the fractional Klein-Gordon equation on AdS$_{2+1}$, computing the explicit kernel representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator as well as the two-point propagator of the fractional Klein-Gordon equation. Our results suggest that the propagator only exists if the mass is small compared to the inverse AdS radius, presumably because the AdS space expands faster with distance as a flat space of the same dimension. Our results are expected to be useful in particular for new applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence within statistical mechanics and quantum information.

Geometric phases distinguish entangled states in wormhole quantum mechanics

We establish a relation between entanglement in simple quantum mechanical qubit systems and in wormhole physics as considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that in both cases, states with the same entanglement structure, indistinguishable by any local measurement, nevertheless are characterized by a different Berry phase. This feature is experimentally accessible in coupled qubit systems where states with different Berry phase are related by unitary transformations. In the wormhole case, these transformations are identified with a time evolution of one of the two throats.

Gauge/gravity dual dynamics for the strongly coupled sector of composite Higgs models

A holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking is used to study the dynamics plus the meson and baryon spectrum of the underlying strong dynamics in composite Higgs models. The model is inspired by top-down D-brane constructions. We introduce this model by applying it to $N_f=2$ QCD. We compute meson masses, decay constants and the nucleon mass. The spectrum is improved by including higher dimensional operators to reflect the UV physics of QCD. Moving to composite Higgs models, we impose perturbative running for the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate in a variety of theories with varying number of colors and flavours. We compare our results in detail to lattice simulations for the following theories: $SU(2)$ gauge theory with two Dirac fundamentals; $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet matter; and $SU(4)$ gauge theory with fundamental and sextet quarks. In each case, the holographic results are encouraging since they are close to lattice results for masses and decay constants. Moreover, our models allow us to compute additional observables not yet computed on the lattice, to relax the quenched approximation and move to the precise fermion content of more realistic composite Higgs models not possible on the lattice. We also provide a new holographic description of the top partners including their masses and structure functions. With the addition of higher dimension operators, we show the top Yukawa coupling can be made of order one, to generate the observed top mass. Finally, we predict the spectrum for the full set of models with top partners proposed by Ferretti and Karateev.

Gauge/gravity dynamics for composite Higgs models and the top mass

We provide gauge/gravity dual descriptions of the strong coupling sector of composite Higgs models using insights from non-conformal examples of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We calculate particle masses and decay constants for proposed Sp(4) and SU(4) gauge theories, where there is the best lattice data for comparison. Our results compare favorably to lattice studies and go beyond those due to a greater flexibility in choosing the fermion content. That content changes the running dynamics and its choice can lead to sizable changes in the bound state masses. We describe top partners by a dual fermionic field in the bulk. Including suitable higher dimension operators can ensure a top mass consistent with the standard model.

Entwinement as a possible alternative to complexity

Unlike the standard entanglement entropy considered in the holographic context, entwinement measures entanglement between degrees of freedom that are not associated to a spatial subregion. Entwinement is defined for two-dimensional CFTs with a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry. Since the Hilbert space of these CFTs does not factorize into tensor products, even the entanglement entropy associated to a spatial subregion cannot be defined as the von Neumann entropy of a reduced density matrix. While earlier works considered embedding the density matrix into a larger, factorizing Hilbert space, we apply a gauge invariant approach by using a density matrix uniquely defined through its relation to the local algebra of observables. We furthermore obtain a fully gauge invariant definition of entwinement valid for general CFTs with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry in terms of all observables acting on the degrees of freedom considered. Holographically, entwinement is dual to the length of non-minimal geodesics present for conical defects or black holes. In this context, we propose a definition of entwinement for thermal states dual to the BTZ black hole. Our results show that "entwinement is enough" to describe the full bulk geometry for the conical defect and provide strong hints that the same holds true for the BTZ black hole. Thus, it provides an alternative to holographic complexity for the theories considered.

Holographic RG Flows for Kondo-like Impurities

Boundary, defect, and interface RG flows, as exemplified by the famous Kondo model, play a significant role in the theory of quantum fields. We study in detail the holographic dual of a non-conformal supersymmetric impurity in the D1/D5 CFT. Its RG flow bears similarities to the Kondo model, although unlike the Kondo model the CFT is strongly coupled in the holographic regime. The interface we study preserves $d = 1$ $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetry and flows to conformal fixed points in both the UV and IR. The interface's UV fixed point is described by $d = 1$ fermionic degrees of freedom, coupled to a gauge connection on the CFT target space that is induced by the ADHM construction. We briefly discuss its field-theoretic properties before shifting our focus to its holographic dual. We analyze the supergravity dual of this interface RG flow, first in the probe limit and then including gravitational backreaction. In the probe limit, the flow is realized by the puffing up of probe branes on an internal $\mathsf{S}^3$ via the Myers effect. We further identify the backreacted supergravity configurations dual to the interface fixed points. These supergravity solutions provide a geometric realization of critical screening of the defect degrees of freedom. This critical screening arises in a way similar to the original Kondo model. We compute the $g$-factor both in the probe brane approximation and using backreacted supergravity solutions, and show that it decreases from the UV to the IR as required by the $g$-theorem.

Holographic Superfluid Solitons with Backreaction

Solitons are important nonperturbative excitations in superfluids. For holographic superfluids, we numerically construct dark solitons that have the symmetry-restored phase at their core. A central point is that we include the gravitational back-reaction of the matter fields, which becomes important at low temperatures. We study in detail the properties of these solitons under variation of the back-reaction strength via tuning the gravitational constant. In particular, the depletion fraction of the particle number density at the core of the solitons is carefully investigated. In agreement with the probe-limit analysis, the depletion fraction shows the same qualitative behavior as in Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, even if the back-reaction is included. We find that the depletion decreases with increasing back-reaction strength. Moreover, the inclusion of back-reaction enables us to obtain the effective energy density of solitons within holography, which together with an evaluation of the surface tension leads to a simple physical explanation for the snake instability of dark solitons.

Information geometry in quantum field theory: lessons from simple examples

Motivated by the increasing connections between information theory and high-energy physics, particularly in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we explore the information geometry associated to a variety of simple systems. By studying their Fisher metrics, we derive some general lessons that may have important implications for the application of information geometry in holography. We begin by demonstrating that the symmetries of the physical theory under study play a strong role in the resulting geometry, and that the appearance of an AdS metric is a relatively general feature. We then investigate what information the Fisher metric retains about the physics of the underlying theory by studying the geometry for both the classical 2d Ising model and the corresponding 1d free fermion theory, and find that the curvature diverges precisely at the phase transition on both sides. We discuss the differences that result from placing a metric on the space of theories vs. states, using the example of coherent free fermion states. We compare the latter to the metric on the space of coherent free boson states and show that in both cases the metric is determined by the symmetries of the corresponding density matrix. We also clarify some misconceptions in the literature pertaining to different notions of flatness associated to metric and non-metric connections, with implications for how one interprets the curvature of the geometry. Our results indicate that in general, caution is needed when connecting the AdS geometry arising from certain models with the AdS/CFT correspondence, and seek to provide a useful collection of guidelines for future progress in this exciting area.

Resolving modular flow: a toolkit for free fermions

Modular flow is a symmetry of the algebra of observables associated to spacetime regions. Being closely related to entanglement, it has played a key role in recent connections between information theory, QFT and gravity. However, little is known about its action beyond highly symmetric cases. The key idea of this work is to introduce a new formula for modular flows for free chiral fermions in $1+1$ dimensions, working directly from the \textit{resolvent}, a standard technique in complex analysis. We present novel results -- not fixed by conformal symmetry -- for disjoint regions on the plane, cylinder and torus. Depending on temperature and boundary conditions, these display different behaviour ranging from purely local to non-local in relation to the mixing of operators at spacelike separation. We find the modular two-point function, whose analytic structure is in precise agreement with the KMS condition that governs modular evolution. Our ready-to-use formulae may provide new ingredients to explore the connection between spacetime and entanglement.

Functional dependence of the Hall viscosity-induced transverse voltage in two-dimensional Fermi liquids

The breaking of parity and time-reversal symmetry in two-dimensional Fermi liquids gives rise to non-dissipative transport features characterized by the Hall viscosity. In magnetic fields, the Hall viscous force directly competes with the Lorentz force, since both mechanisms contribute to the Hall voltage. In this work, we present a channel geometry that allows us to uniquely distinguish these two contributions and derive, for the first time, their functional dependency on all external parameters. We show that the ratio of the Hall viscous to the Lorentz force contribution is negative and that its modulus decreases with increasing width, slip-length and carrier density, while it increases with the electron-electron mean free path of our channel. In typical materials such as GaAs the Hall viscous contribution can dominate the Lorentz signal up to a few tens of millitesla until the total Hall voltage vanishes and subsequently is overcome by the Lorentz contribution. Moreover, we prove that the total Hall electric field is parabolic due to Lorentz effects, whereas the offset of this parabola is characterized by the Hall viscosity. Hence, our results pave the way to measure and identify the Hall viscosity via both global and local voltage measurements.

Light composite fermions from holography

Motivated by Beyond the Standard Model theories of composite fermions or top partners, we propose a holographic mechanism that generates light baryonic states in a strongly coupled gauge theory. The starting point are the fermionic fluctuations of massive probe branes embedded into AdS$_5 \times S^5$. We first consider the D3/probe D7-brane system. We derive in detail the fermionic fluctuation equations and show the supersymmetric degeneracy of the mesinos with the mesons. Here we view the fermionic mesinos as potential realizations of composite fermions or top partners. We then add higher dimension operators and study their impact on the mesino spectrum. In particular we show that the ground state mesino mass can be pushed to an arbitrarily light value by a suitable choice of the coupling of the higher dimension operator, $g$. No matter the value of $g$, the masses of higher excited states never fall below the mass of the ground state at $g=0$. We also present similar results for the supersymmetric D3/D3 and D3/D5 systems.

Turbulent hydrodynamics in strongly correlated Kagome metals

A current challenge in condensed matter physics is the realization of strongly correlated, viscous electron fluids. These fluids are not amenable to the perturbative methods of Fermi liquid theory, but can be described by holography, that is, by mapping them onto a weakly curved gravitational theory via gauge/gravity duality. The canonical system considered for realizations has been graphene, which possesses Dirac dispersions at low energies as well as significant Coulomb interactions between the electrons. In this work, we show that Kagome systems with electron fillings adjusted to the Dirac nodes of their band structure provide a much more compelling platform for realizations of viscous electron fluids, including non-linear effects such as turbulence. In particular, we find that in stoichiometric Scandium (Sc) Herbertsmithite, the fine-structure constant, which measures the effective Coulomb interaction and hence reflects the strength of the correlations, is enhanced by a factor of about 3.2 as compared to graphene, due to orbital hybridization. We employ holography to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity over the entropy density in Sc-Herbertsmithite, and find it about three times smaller than in graphene. These findings put, for the first time, the turbulent flow regime described by holography within the reach of experiments.

Bending branes for DCFT in two dimensions

We consider a holographic dual model for defect conformal field theories (DCFT) in which we include the backreaction of the defect on the dual geometry. In particular, we consider a dual gravity system in which a two-dimensional hypersurface with matter fields, the brane, is embedded into a three-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetime. Motivated by recent proposals for holographic duals of boundary conformal field theories (BCFT), we assume the geometry of the brane to be determined by Israel junction conditions. We show that these conditions are intimately related to the energy conditions for the brane matter fields, and explain how these energy conditions constrain the possible geometries. This has implications for the holographic entanglement entropy in particular. Moreover, we give exact analytical solutions for the case where the matter content of the brane is a perfect fluid, which in a particular case corresponds to a free massless scalar field. Finally, we describe how our results may be particularly useful for extending a recent proposal for a holographic Kondo model.

Bulk quartic vertices from boundary four-point correlators

We present arguments which suggest that the bulk higher-spin gravity duals of weakly-coupled conformal field theories obey some refined notion of locality. In particular, we discuss the Mellin amplitude programme in this context. We focus on the $O(N)$ vector model and minimal higher-spin gravity as a paradigmatic example of such holographic dual pairs. We restrict ourselves to three- and four-point functions of scalar primary operators, but the qualitative conclusions are expected to hold for the generic case.

Entanglement Entropy in a Holographic Kondo Model

We calculate entanglement and impurity entropies in a recent holographic model of a magnetic impurity interacting with a strongly coupled system. There is an RG flow to an IR fixed point where the impurity is screened, leading to a decrease in impurity degrees of freedom. This information loss corresponds to a volume decrease in our dual gravity model, which consists of a codimension one hypersurface embedded in a BTZ black hole background in three dimensions. There are matter fields defined on this hypersurface which are dual to Kondo field theory operators. In the large N limit, the formation of the Kondo cloud corresponds to the condensation of a scalar field. The entropy is calculated according to the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. This requires to determine the backreaction of the hypersurface on the BTZ geometry, which is achieved by solving the Israel junction conditions. We find that the larger the scalar condensate gets, the more the volume of constant time slices in the bulk is reduced, shortening the bulk geodesics and reducing the impurity entropy. This provides a new non-trivial example of an RG flow satisfying the g-theorem. Moreover, we find explicit expressions for the impurity entropy which are in agreement with previous field theory results for free electrons. This demonstrates the universality of perturbing about an IR fixed point.

Holographic charge localization at brane intersections

Using gauge/gravity duality, we investigate charge localization near an interface in a strongly coupled system. For this purpose we consider a top-down holographic model and determine its conductivities. Our model corresponds to a holographic interface which localizes charge around a (1+1)-dimensional defect in a (2+1)-dimensional system. The setup consists of a D3/D5 intersection at finite temperature and charge density. We work in the probe limit, and consider massive embeddings of a D5-brane where the mass depends on one of the field theory spatial directions, with a profile interpolating between a negative and a positive value. We compute the conductivity in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the interface. For the latter case we are able to express the DC conductivity as a function of background horizon data. At the interface, the DC conductivity in the parallel direction is enhanced up to five times with respect to that in the orthogonal one. We study the implications of broken translation invariance for the AC and DC conductivities.

Quartic AdS Interactions in Higher-Spin Gravity from Conformal Field Theory

Clarifying the locality properties of higher-spin gravity is a pressing task, but notoriously difficult due to the absence of a weakly-coupled flat regime. The simplest non-trivial case where this question can be addressed is the quartic self-interaction of the AdS scalar field present in the higher-spin multiplet. We investigate this issue in the context of the holographic duality between the minimal bosonic higher-spin theory on AdS$_4$ and the free $O\left(N\right)$ vector model in three dimensions. In particular, we determine the exact explicit form of the derivative expansion of the bulk scalar quartic vertex. The quartic vertex is obtained from the field theory four-point function of the operator dual to the bulk scalar, by making use of our previous results for the Witten diagrams of higher-spin exchanges. This is facilitated by establishing the conformal block expansions of both the boundary four-point function and the dual bulk Witten diagram amplitudes. We show that the vertex we find satisfies a generalised notion of locality.

S-Wave Superconductivity in Anisotropic Holographic Insulators

Within gauge/gravity duality, we consider finite density systems in a helical lattice dual to asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times with Bianchi VII symmetry. These systems can become an anisotropic insulator in one direction while retaining metallic behavior in others. To this model, we add a $U(1)$ charged scalar and show that below a critical temperature, it forms a spatially homogeneous condensate that restores isotropy in a new superconducting ground state. We determine the phase diagram in terms of the helix parameters and perform a stability analysis on its IR fixed point corresponding to a finite density condensed phase at zero temperature. Moreover, by analyzing fluctuations about the gravity background, we study the optical conductivity. Due to the lattice, this model provides an example for a holographic insulator-superfluid transition in which there is no unrealistic delta-function peak in the normal phase DC conductivity. Our results suggest that in the zero temperature limit, all degrees of freedom present in the normal phase condense. This, together with the breaking of translation invariance, has implications for Homes' and Uemuras's relations. This is of relevance for applications to real world condensed matter systems. We find a range of parameters in this system where Homes' relation holds.

Conditions on holographic entangling surfaces in higher curvature gravity

We study the extremal surfaces of functionals recently proposed for the holographic calculation of entanglement entropy in general higher curvature theories, using New Massive gravity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity as concrete examples. We show that the entropy functionals admit closed extremal surfaces, which for black hole backgrounds can encircle the event horizon of the black hole. In the examples considered, such closed surfaces correspond to a lower value of the entropy functional than expected from CFT calculations, implying a seeming mismatch between the bulk and boundary calculations. For Lorentzian settings we show that this problem can be resolved by imposing a causality constraint on the extremal surfaces. The possibility of deriving conditions from an alternative conical boundary condition method as proposed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena is explored.

Hydrodynamic Regimes of Spinning Black D3-Branes

We present the long-wavelength effective description of non-extremal spinning black D3-branes in flat space. Our setup is motivated by recent explorations of low energy dynamics on black brane world-volumes within the blackfold approach and its connections to the fluid/gravity correspondence. The spinning D3-branes with a rigid radial Dirichlet cut-off give rise to an effective field theory. This theory describes a charged plasma which is driven by external forces, given by one vector and two scalar operators. Furthermore, the flavour charge of this plasma is anomalous, allowing us to examine features of anomaly-induced transport in the blackfold context. We calculate the hydrodynamic transport coefficients to first order and show that in the near-horizon limit, they reproduce the conformal charged fluid dynamics of ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. More generally the system interpolates smoothly between the blackfold, fluid/gravity, and Rindler fluid dynamics.

Meson spectra of asymptotically free gauge theories from holography

Using holography, we study the low-lying mesonic spectrum of a range of asymptotically free gauge theories. First we revisit a simple top-down holographic model of QCD-like dynamics with predictions in the M_rho-M_pi plane. The meson masses in this model are in very good agreement with lattice gauge theory calculations in the quenched approximation. We show that the key ingredient for the meson mass predictions is the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate, gamma. This provides an explanation for the agreement of holographic and quenched lattice gauge theory calculations. We then study the `Dynamic AdS/QCD model' in which the gauge theory dynamics is included by a choice for the running of gamma. We use the naive two-loop perturbative running of the gauge coupling extrapolated to the non-perturbative regime to estimate the running of gamma across a number of theories. We consider models with quarks in the fundamental, adjoint, two-index symmetric and two-index anti-symmetric representations. We display predictions for M_rho, M_pi, M_sigma and the lightest glueball mass. Many of these theories, where the contribution to the running of gamma is dominated by the gluons, give very similar spectra, which also match with lattice expectations for QCD. On the other hand, a significant difference between spectra in different holographic models is seen for theories where the quark content changes the gradient of the running of gamma around the scale at which chiral symmetry breaking is triggered at gamma approximately 1. For these walking theories we see an enhancement of the rho-mass and a suppression of the sigma-mass. Both phenomena are characteristic for walking behaviour in the physical meson masses.

Towards holographic higher-spin interactions: Four-point functions and higher-spin exchange

Within holography, we calculate the contribution of an arbitrary spin-s gauge boson exchange in $AdS_{d+1}$ to the four-point function with scalar operators on the boundary. As an important ingredient, we first compute the complete bulk-to-bulk propagators for massless bosonic higher-spin fields in the metric-like formulation, in any dimension and in various gauges. The split representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagators in terms of bulk-to-boundary propagators allows to present the higher-spin exchange diagram in the form of a conformal partial wave expansion. Our results provide a step towards the larger goal of the holographic reconstruction of bulk interactions, and of clarifying bulk locality.

A Holographic Model of the Kondo Effect

We propose a model of the Kondo effect based on the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, also known as holography. The Kondo effect is the screening of a magnetic impurity coupled anti-ferromagnetically to a bath of conduction electrons at low temperatures. In a (1+1)-dimensional CFT description, the Kondo effect is a renormalization group flow triggered by a marginally relevant (0+1)-dimensional operator between two fixed points with the same Kac-Moody current algebra. In the large-N limit, with spin SU(N) and charge U(1) symmetries, the Kondo effect appears as a (0+1)-dimensional second-order mean-field transition in which the U(1) charge symmetry is spontaneously broken. Our holographic model, which combines the CFT and large-N descriptions, is a Chern-Simons gauge field in (2+1)-dimensional AdS space, AdS3, dual to the Kac-Moody current, coupled to a holographic superconductor along an AdS2 subspace. Our model exhibits several characteristic features of the Kondo effect, including a dynamically generated scale, a resistivity with power-law behavior in temperature at low temperatures, and a spectral flow producing a phase shift. Our holographic Kondo model may be useful for studying many open problems involving impurities, including for example the Kondo lattice problem.

A universal fermionic analogue of the shear viscosity

We holographically compute supercharge diffusion constants in supersymmetric field theories, dual to AdS black brane solutions of arbitrary dimension. This includes the extension of earlier work by Kontoudi and Policastro for D3-branes to M2- and M5-brane theories. We consider the case of vanishing chemical potential. In particular, we relate the product of a diffusion constant and the energy density to a universal result for the fermionic absorption cross section. This relation is analogous to the famous proof of universality of $η/ s$. We calculate the diffusion constants in two different ways: First, the computation is performed via the low frequency, low momentum pole of the correlator of supersymmetry currents. This pole describes the hydrodynamic phonino mode, the massless Goldstone fermion of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking by temperature. Second, the calculation is carried out using the dual transversal mode of the bulk gravitino, with the help of a new Kubo formula. Moreover, we provide some evidence for the applicability of generalized dimensional reduction for fermions when computing the corresponding D$p$-brane diffusion constants.

Holographic entanglement entropy of semi-local quantum liquids

We consider the holographic entanglement entropy of $(d+2)$-dimensional semi-local quantum liquids, for which the dual gravity background in the deep interior is $AdS_{2}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$ multiplied by a warp factor which depends on the radial coordinate. The entropy density of this geometry goes to zero in the extremal limit. The thermodynamics associated with this semi-local background is discussed via dimensional analysis and scaling arguments. For the case of an asymptotically AdS UV completion of this geometry, we show that the entanglement entropy of a strip and an annulus exhibits a phase transition as a typical length of the different shapes is varied, while there is no sign of such a transition for the entanglement entropy of a sphere. Moreover, for the spherical entangling region, the leading order contribution to the entanglement entropy in the IR is calculated analytically. It exhibits an area law behaviour and agrees with the numerical result.

Magnetic field induced lattice ground states from holography

We study the holographic field theory dual of a probe SU(2) Yang-Mills field in a background $(4+1)$-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. We find a new ground state when a magnetic component of the gauge field is larger than a critical value. The ground state forms a triangular Abrikosov lattice in the spatial directions perpendicular to the magnetic field. The lattice is composed of superconducting vortices induced by the condensation of a charged vector operator. We perform this calculation both at finite temperature and at zero temperature with a hard wall cutoff dual to a confining gauge theory. The study of this state may be of relevance to both holographic condensed matter models as well as to heavy ion physics. The results shown here provide support for the proposal that such a ground state may be found in the QCD vacuum when a large magnetic field is present.

New Transport Properties of Anisotropic Holographic Superfluids

We complete the analysis of transport phenomena in p-wave superfluids within gauge/gravity duality, using the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills model with backreaction. In particular, we analyze the fluctuation modes of helicity zero in addition to the helicity one and two modes studied earlier. We compute a further transport coefficient, associated to the first normal stress difference, not previously considered in the holographic context. In the unbroken phase this is related to a minimally coupled scalar on the gravity side. Moreover we find transport phenomena related to the thermoelectric and piezoelectric effects, in particular in the direction of the condensate, as well as the flexoelectric effect. These are similar to phenomena observed in condensed matter systems.

Striped phases in the holographic insulator/superconductor transition

We study striped phases in holographic insulator/superconductor transition by considering a spatially modulated chemical potential in AdS soliton background. Generally striped phases can develop above a critical chemical potential. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is set to zero, a discontinuity in the plot of charge density versus chemical potential is observed in the limit of large wave vector. We explain this discontinuity using an analytical approach. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is present, the critical chemical potential is larger than in the case of a homogeneous chemical potential, which indicates that the spatially modulated chemical potential disfavors the phase transition. This behavior is also confirmed qualitatively by analytical calculations. We also calculate the grand canonical potential and find that the striped phase is favored.

A Review of Magnetic Phenomena in Probe-Brane Holographic Matter

Gauge/gravity duality is a useful and efficient tool for addressing and studying questions related to strongly interacting systems described by a gauge theory. In this manuscript we will review a number of interesting phenomena that occur in such systems when a background magnetic field is turned on. Specifically, we will discuss holographic models for systems that include matter fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, which are incorporated by adding probe branes into the gravitational background dual to the gauge theory. We include three models in this review: the D3-D7 and D4-D8 models, that describe four-dimensional systems, and the D3-D7' model, that describes three-dimensional fermions interacting with a four-dimensional gauge field.

Black Hole Instability Induced by a Magnetic Field

In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we find a new black hole instability in asymptotically AdS spaces. On the field theory side, this instability is induced by a magnetic field in the vacuum, in contrast to previous instabilities which occur at finite density. On the gravity side, this corresponds to a spatial component of the gauge field in SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, which provides the crucial non-Abelian structure. Our analysis may provide supporting evidence for recent QCD studies of Rho-meson condensation induced by a magnetic field.

Holographic Cosmological Backgrounds, Wilson Loop (De)confinement and Dilaton Singularities

We review a construction of holographic geometries dual to N=4 SYM theory on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background and in the presence or absence of a gluon condensate and instanton density. We find the most general solution with arbitrary scale factor and show that it is diffeomorphic to topological black holes. We introduce a time-dependent boundary cosmological constant λ(t) and show energy-momentum conservation in this background. For constant λ, the deconfinement properties of the temporal Wilson loop are analysed. In most cases the Wilson loop confines throughout cosmological evolution. However, there is an exceptional case which shows a transition from deconfinement at early times to confinement at late times. We classify the presence or absence of horizons, with important implications for the Wilson loop.

Slow-walking inflation

We propose a new model of slow-roll inflation in string cosmology, based on warped throat supergravity solutions displaying `walking' dynamics, i.e. the coupling constant of the dual gauge theory slowly varies over a range of energy scales. The features of the throat geometry are sourced by a rich field content, given by the dilaton and RR and NS fluxes. By considering the motion of a D3-brane probe in this geometry, we are able to analytically calculate the brane potential in a physically interesting regime. This potential has an inflection point: in its proximity we realize a model of inflation lasting sixty e-foldings, and whose robust predictions are in agreement with current observations. We are also able to interpret some of the most interesting aspects of this scenario in terms of the properties of the QFT dual theory.

Thermalization from gauge/gravity duality: Evolution of singularities in unequal time correlators

We consider a gauge/gravity dual model of thermalization which consists of a collapsing thin matter shell in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. A central aspect of our model is to consider a shell moving at finite velocity as determined by its equation of motion, rather than a quasi-static approximation as considered previously in the literature. By applying a divergence matching method, we obtain the evolution of singularities in the retarded unequal time correlator $G^R(t,t')$, which probes different stages of the thermalization. We find that the number of singularities decreases from a finite number to zero as the gauge theory thermalizes. This may be interpreted as a sign of decoherence. Moreover, in a second part of the paper, we show explicitly that the thermal correlator is characterized by the existence of singularities in the complex time plane. By studying a quasi-static state, we show the singularities at real times originate from contributions of normal modes. We also investigate the possibility of obtaining complex singularities from contributions of quasi-normal modes.

Time singularities of correlators from Dirichlet conditions in AdS/CFT

Within AdS/CFT, we establish a general procedure for obtaining the leading singularity of two-point correlators involving operator insertions at different times. The procedure obtained is applied to operators dual to a scalar field which satisfies Dirichlet boundary conditions on an arbitrary time-like surface in the bulk. We determine how the Dirichlet boundary conditions influence the singularity structure of the field theory correlation functions. New singularities appear at boundary points connected by null geodesics bouncing between the Dirichlet surface and the boundary. We propose that their appearance can be interpreted as due to a non-local double trace deformation of the dual field theory, in which the two insertions of the operator are separated in time. The procedure developed in this paper provides a technical tool which may prove useful in view of describing holographic thermalization using gravitational collapse in AdS space.

Towards a Holographic Realization of Homes' Law

Gauge/gravity duality has proved to be a very successful tool for describing strongly coupled systems in particle physics and heavy ion physics. The application of the gauge/gravity duality to quantum matter is a promising candidate to explain questions concerning non-zero temperature dynamics and transport coefficients. To a large extent, the success of applications of gauge/gravity duality to the quark-gluon plasma is founded on the derivation of a universal result, the famous ratio of shear viscosity and entropy density. As a base for applications to condensed matter physics, it is highly desirable to have a similar universal relation in this context as well. A candidate for such a universal law is given by Homes' law: High Tc superconductors, as well as some conventional superconductors, exhibit a universal scaling relation between the superfluid density at zero temperature and the conductivity at the critical temperature times the critical temperature itself. In this work we describe progress in employing the models of holographic superconductors to realize Homes' law and to find a universal relation governing strongly correlated quantum matter. We calculate diffusive processes, including the backreaction of the gravitational matter fields on the geometry. We consider both holographic s-wave and p-wave superconductors. We show that a particular form of Homes' law holds in the absence of backreaction. Moreover, we suggest further steps to be taken for holographically realizing Homes' law more generally in the presence of backreaction.

Transport in Anisotropic Superfluids: A Holographic Description

We study transport phenomena in p-wave superfluids in the context of gauge/gravity duality. Due to the spacetime anisotropy of this system, the tensorial structure of the transport coefficients is non-trivial in contrast to the isotropic case. In particular, there is an additional shear mode which leads to a non-universal value of the shear viscosity even in an Einstein gravity setup. In this paper, we present a complete study of the helicity two and helicity one fluctuation modes. In addition to the non-universal shear viscosity, we also investigate the thermoelectric effect, i.e. the mixing of electric and heat current. Moreover, we also find an additional effect due to the anisotropy, the so-called flexoelectric effect.

A moving mirror in AdS space as a toy model for holographic thermalization

It is expected that thermalization may be described within gauge/gravity duality by considering time-dependent configurations on the gravity side of the correspondence, for instance a gravitational collapse of a matter configuration in Anti-de Sitter space. As a step towards the ambitious goal of describing such a configuration, we investigate a simple time-dependent toy model in which a mirror moves in the radial direction of Anti-de Sitter space. For this configuration, we establish a procedure for calculating two-point functions of scalar fluctuations, based on a WKB approximation. We test our method on two sample trajectories for the mirror, and find that the singularity structure of the two-point functions is in agreement with geometric optics.

Holographic (De)confinement Transitions in Cosmological Backgrounds

For type IIB supergravity with a running axio-dilaton, we construct bulk solutions which admit a cosmological background metric of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type. These solutions include both a dark radiation term in the bulk as well as a four-dimensional (boundary) cosmological constant, while gravity at the boundary remains non-dynamical. We holographically calculate the stress-energy tensor, showing that it consists of two contributions: The first one, generated by the dark radiation term, leads to the thermal fluid of N = 4 SYM theory, while the second, the conformal anomaly, originates from the boundary cosmological constant. Conservation of the boundary stress tensor implies that the boundary cosmological constant is time-independent, such that there is no exchange between the two stress-tensor contributions. We then study (de)confinement by evaluating the Wilson loop in these backgrounds. While the dark radiation term favours deconfinement, a negative cosmological constant drives the system into a confined phase. When both contributions are present, we find an oscillating universe with negative cosmological constant which undergoes periodic (de)confinement transitions as the scale of three space expands and re-contracts.

Holographic Superfluidity in Imbalanced Mixtures

We construct superfluid black hole solutions with two chemical potentials. By analogy with QCD, the two chemical potentials correspond to the baryon and isospin symmetries, respectively. We consider two systems: the back-reacted U(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 4+1 dimensions and the 9+1-dimensional D3/D7 brane setup with two coincident D7-brane probes. In the D7-brane model, the identification of baryon and isospin chemical potential is explicit since the dual field theory is explicitly known. Studying the phase diagram, we find in both systems a quantum phase transition at a critical ratio of the two chemical potentials. However the quantum phase transition is different in the two systems: In the D3/D7 brane setup we always find a second order phase transition, while in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, depending on the strength of the back-reaction, we obtain a continuous or first order transition. We expect the continuous quantum phase transition to be BKT-like. We comment on the origin of this differing behavior in these apparently very similar models and compare to phenomenological systems.

Low-Energy Theorems from Holography

In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we verify two types of gauge theory low-energy theorems, the dilation Ward identities and the decoupling of heavy flavor. First, we provide an analytic proof of non-trivial dilation Ward identities for a theory holographically dual to a background with gluon condensate (the self-dual Liu--Tseytlin background). In this way an important class of low-energy theorems for correlators of different operators with the trace of the energy-momentum tensor is established, which so far has been studied in field theory only. Another low-energy relationship, the so-called decoupling theorem, is numerically shown to hold universally in three holographic models involving both the quark and the gluon condensate. We show this by comparing the ratio of the quark and gluon condensates in three different examples of gravity backgrounds with non-trivial dilaton flow. As a by-product of our study, we also obtain gauge field condensate contributions to meson transport coefficients.

Magnetic catalysis with massive dynamical flavours

Within gauge/gravity duality, we construct a backreacted supergravity background dual to SU(Nc) N=4 SYM coupled to Nf massive fundamental flavours in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our solution is perturbative in a parameter that counts the number of the internal flavour loops. The background has a hollow cavity in the bulk of the geometry, where it is similar to the supergravity dual of a non-commutative SYM. The radius of this cavity is related to the dynamically generated mass of the fundamental fields. We apply our construction to study the effect of magnetic catalysis and develop an appropriate renormalization scheme to compute the free energy and the fundamental condensate of the dual gauge theory as a function of the bare mass. While at leading order in the expansion of the perturbative parameter, the free energy and the fundamental condensate agree with the results obtained in the quenched approximation, at next order we show that the effect of magnetic catalysis is enhanced and the contribution to the condensate of the theory from internal fundamental loops runs logarithmically with the finite cutoff Lambda_UV.

Mesons from global Anti-de Sitter space

In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we study both probe D7-- and probe D5--branes in global Anti-de Sitter space. The dual field theory is N=4 theory on R x S^3 with added flavour. The branes undergo a geometrical phase transition in this geometry as function of the bare quark mass m_q in units of 1/R with R the S^3 radius. The meson spectra are obtained from fluctuations of the brane probes. First, we study them numerically for finite quark mass through the phase transition. Moreover, at zero quark mass we calculate the meson spectra analytically both in supergravity and in free field theory on R x S^3 and find that the results match: For the chiral primaries, the lowest level is given by the zero point energy or by the scaling dimension of the operator corresponding to the fluctuations, respectively. The higher levels are equidistant. Similar results apply to the descendents. Our results confirm the physical interpretation that the mesons cannot pair-produce any further when their zero-point energy exceeds their binding energy.

Non-universal shear viscosity from Einstein gravity

A very famous result of gauge/gravity duality is the universality of the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in every field theory holographically dual to classical, two-derivative (Einstein) gravity. We present a way to obtain deviation form this universality by breaking the rotational symmetry spontaneously. In anisotropic fluids additional shear modes exist and their corresponding shear viscosities may be non-universal. We confirm this by explicitly calculating the shear viscosities in a transversely isotropic background, a p-wave superfluid, and study its critical behavior. This is a first decisive step towards further applications of gauge/gravity duality to physical systems.

On Stability and Transport of Cold Holographic Matter

We use gauge-gravity duality to study the stability of zero-temperature, finite baryon density states of N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory coupled to a single massive fundamental-representation N=2 hypermultiplet in the large-Nc and large-coupling limits. In particular, we study the spectrum of mesons. The dual description is a probe D7-brane in anti-de Sitter space with a particular configuration of worldvolume fields. The meson spectrum is dual to the spectrum of fluctuations of worldvolume fields about that configuration. We use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to compute the spectrum, including a special numerical technique designed to deal with singular points in the fluctuations' equations of motion. Despite circumstantial evidence that the system might be unstable, such as a finite entropy density at zero temperature and the existence of instabilities in similar theories, we find no evidence of any instabilities, at least for the ranges of frequency and momenta that we consider. We discover a pole on the imaginary frequency axis in a scalar meson two-point function, similar to the diffusive mode in the two-point function of a conserved charge.

Towards Matter Inflation in Heterotic String Theory

Recently, a class of inflation models in supergravity with gauge non-singlet matter fields as the inflaton has been proposed. It is based on a `tribrid' structure in the superpotential and on a Heisenberg symmetry for solving the eta-problem. We suggest that a generalization of this model class may be suitable for realising inflation in heterotic orbifold compactifications, where the Heisenberg symmetry is a property of the tree-level K"ahler potential of untwisted matter fields. We discuss moduli stabilization in this setup and propose a mechanism to stabilize the modulus associated to the inflaton, which respects the symmetry in the large radius limit. Inflation ends via a waterfall phase transition, as in hybrid inflation. We give conditions which have to be satisfied for realising inflation along these lines in the matter sector of heterotic orbifolds.

Fermionic Operator Mixing in Holographic p-wave Superfluids

We use gauge-gravity duality to compute spectral functions of fermionic operators in a strongly-coupled defect field theory in p-wave superfluid states. The field theory is (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory, in the 't Hooft limit and with large coupling, coupled to two massless flavors of (2+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric matter. We show that a sufficiently large chemical potential for a U(1) subgroup of the global SU(2) isospin symmetry triggers a phase transition to a p-wave superfluid state, and in that state we compute spectral functions for the fermionic superpartners of mesons valued in the adjoint of SU(2) isospin. In the spectral functions we see the breaking of rotational symmetry and the emergence of a Fermi surface comprised of isolated points as we cool the system through the superfluid phase transition. The dual gravitational description is two coincident probe D5-branes in AdS5 x S5 with non-trivial worldvolume SU(2) gauge fields. We extract spectral functions from solutions of the linearized equations of motion for the D5-branes' worldvolume fermions, which couple to one another through the worldvolume gauge field. We develop an efficient method to compute retarded Green's functions from a system of coupled bulk fermions. We also perform the holographic renormalization of free bulk fermions in any asymptotically Euclidean AdS space.

Fluid dynamics of R-charged black holes

We construct electrically charged AdS_5 black hole solutions whose charge, mass and boost-parameters vary slowly with the space-time coordinates. From the perspective of the dual theory, these are equivalent to hydrodynamic configurations with varying chemical potential, temperature and velocity fields. We compute the boundary theory transport coefficients associated with a derivative expansion of the energy momentum tensor and R-charge current up to second order. In particular, we find a first order transport coefficient associated with the axial component of the current.

On Holographic p-wave Superfluids with Back-reaction

We numerically construct asymptotically Anti-de Sitter charged black hole solutions of (4+1)-dimensional SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory that, for sufficiently low temperature, develop vector hair. Via gauge-gravity duality, these solutions describe a strongly-coupled conformal field theory at finite temperature and density that undergoes a phase transition to a superfluid state with spontaneously broken rotational symmetry (a p-wave superfluid state). The bulk theory has a single free parameter, the ratio of the five-dimensional gravitational constant to the Yang-Mills coupling, which we denote as alpha. Previous analyses have shown that in the so-called probe limit, where alpha goes to zero and hence the gauge fields are ignored in Einstein's equation, the transition to the superfluid state is second order. We construct fully back-reacted solutions, where alpha is finite and the gauge fields are included in Einstein's equation, and find that for values of alpha above a critical value alpha_c = 0.365 +- 0.001, the transition becomes first order.

Quasinormal modes of massive charged flavor branes

We present an analysis and classification of vector and scalar fluctuations in a D3/D7 brane setup at finite termperature and baryon density. The system is dual to an N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU(N_c) gauge group and N_f hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation in the quenched approximation. We improve significantly over previous results on the quasinormal mode spectrum of D7 branes and stress their novel physical interpretation. Amongst our findings is a new purely imaginary scalar mode that becomes tachyonic at sufficiently low temperature and baryon density. We establish the existence of a critical density above which the scalar mode stays in the stable regime for all temperatures. In the vector sector we study the crossover from the hydrodynamic to the quasiparticle regime and find that it moves to shorter wavelengths for lower temperatures. At zero baryon density the quasinormal modes move toward distinct discrete attractor frequencies that depend on the momentum as we increase the temperature. At finite baryon density, however, the trajectories show a turning behavior such that for low temperature the quasinormal mode spectrum approaches the spectrum of the supersymmetric zero temperature normal modes. We interpret this as resolution of the singular quasinormal mode spectrum that appears at the limiting D7 brane embedding at vanishing baryon density.

Fayet-Iliopoulos Terms in AdS/CFT with Flavour

We construct the gravity dual of a field theory with flavour in which there are Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms present. For this purpose we turn on a constant Kalb-Ramond B field in four internal space directions of AdS_5 x S^5 together with a D7 brane probe wrapping AdS_5 x S^3. The B field induces noncommutativity on the four internal directions of the D7 brane probe perpendicular to the AdS boundary. We argue on general grounds that the moduli space of the Higgs part of mixed Coulomb-Higgs states in the dual field theory at the boundary is described by the ADHM equations for noncommutative instantons on the four internal directions of the D7 brane probe. In particular, the global symmetries match. The FI term arises as the holographic dual of an anti-selfdual B field. We discuss possible applications for this construction.

Finite baryon and isospin chemical potential in AdS/CFT with flavor

We investigate the thermodynamics of a thermal field theory in presence of both a baryon and an isospin chemical potential. For this we consider a probe of several D7-branes embedded in the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. We determine the structure of the phase diagram and calculate the relevant thermodynamical quantities both in the canonical and in the grand canonical ensemble. We discuss how accidental symmetries present reflect themselves in the phase diagram: In the case of two flavors, for small densities, there is a rotational symmetry in the plane spanned by the baryon and isospin density which breaks down at large densities, leaving a Z_4-symmetry. Finally, we calculate vector mode spectral functions and determine their dependence on either the baryon or the isospin density. For large densities, a new excitation forms with energy below the known supersymmetric spectrum. Increasing the density further, this excitation becomes unstable. We speculate that this instability indicates a new phase of condensed mesons.

Heavy-Light Mesons from the AdS/CFT Correspondence

We propose a holographic description of heavy-light mesons, i.e. of mesons containing a light and a heavy quark. In the semi-classical string limit, we look at the dynamics of strings tied between two D7 branes. We consider this setup both in an AdS background and in the non-supersymmetric Constable-Myers geometry which induces chiral symmetry breaking. We compute the meson masses in each case. Finally we discuss the relevance of this result for phenomenological comparison to the physical b-quark sector.

Mesons in Gauge/Gravity Duals - A Review

We review recent progress in studying mesons within gauge/gravity duality, in the context of adding flavour degrees of freedom to generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our main focus is on the `top-down approach' of considering models constructed within string theory. We explain the string-theoretical constructions in detail, aiming at non-specialists. These give rise to a new way of describing strongly coupled confining large N gauge gauge theories similar to large N QCD. In particular, we consider gravity dual descriptions of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and compare with lattice results. A further topic covered is the behaviour of flavour bound states in finite temperature field theories dual to a gravity background involving a black hole. We also describe the `bottom up' phenomenological approach to mesons within AdS/QCD. -- Some previously unpublished results are also included.

Space-time dependent couplings in N=1 SUSY gauge theories: Anomalies and Central Functions

We consider N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in which the couplings are allowed to be space-time dependent functions. Both the gauge and the superpotential couplings become chiral superfields. As has recently been shown, a new topological anomaly appears in models with space-time dependent gauge coupling. Here we show how this anomaly may be used to derive the NSVZ beta function in a particular, well-determined renormalisation scheme, both without and with chiral matter. Moreover we extend the topological anomaly analysis to theories coupled to a classical curved superspace background, and use it to derive an all-order expression for the central charge c, the coefficient of the Weyl tensor squared contribution to the conformal anomaly. We also comment on the implications of our results for the central charge a expected to be of relevance for a four-dimensional C-theorem.

Dual expansions of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory via IIB superstring theory

We examine the dual correspondence between holographic IIB superstring theory and N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite values of the coupling constants. In particular we analyze a field theory strong-coupling expansion which is the S-dual of the planar expansion. This expansion arises naturally as the AdS/CFT dual of the IIB superstring scattering amplitudes given a genus truncation property due to modular invariance. The space-time structure of the contributions to the field theory four-point correlation functions obtained from the IIB scattering elements is investigated in the example of the product of four conserved stress tensors, and is expressed as an infinite sum of field theory triangle integrals. The OPE structure of these contributions to the stress tensor four-point function is analyzed and shown not to give rise to any poles. Quantization of the string in the background of a five-form field strength is performed through a covariantized background field approach, and relations to the N=4 topological string are found.
