Conditional Independence in Max-linear Bayesian Networks

Motivated by extreme value theory, max-linear Bayesian networks have been recently introduced and studied as an alternative to linear structural equation models. However, for max-linear systems the classical independence results for Bayesian networks are far from exhausting valid conditional independence statements. We use tropical linear algebra to derive a compact representation of the conditional distribution given a partial observation, and exploit this to obtain a complete description of all conditional independence relations. In the context-specific case, where conditional independence is queried relative to a specific value of the conditioning variables, we introduce the notion of a source DAG to disclose the valid conditional independence relations. In the context-free case we characterize conditional independence through a modified separation concept, $\ast$-separation, combined with a tropical eigenvalue condition. We also introduce the notion of an impact graph which describes how extreme events spread deterministically through the network and we give a complete characterization of such impact graphs. Our analysis opens up several interesting questions concerning conditional independence and tropical geometry.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Totally Positive Log-Concave Densities

We study nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation for two classes of multivariate distributions that imply strong forms of positive dependence; namely log-supermodular (MTP$_2$) distributions and log-$L^\#$-concave (LLC) distributions. In both cases we also assume log-concavity in order to ensure boundedness of the likelihood function. Given $n$ independent and identically distributed random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$ from one of our distributions, the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) exists a.s. and is unique a.e. with probability one when $n\geq 3$. This holds independently of the ambient dimension $d$. We conjecture that the MLE is always the exponential of a tent function. We prove this result for samples in $\{0,1\}^d$ or in $\mathbb{R}^2$ under MTP$_2$, and for samples in $\mathbb{Q}^d$ under LLC. Finally, we provide a conditional gradient algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood estimate.

Robust exponential binary pattern storage in Little-Hopfield networks

The Little-Hopfield network is an auto-associative computational model of neural memory storage and retrieval. This model is known to robustly store collections of randomly generated binary patterns as stable-states of the network dynamics. However, the number of binary memories so storable scales linearly in the number of neurons, and it has been a long-standing open problem whether robust exponential storage of binary patterns was possible in such a network memory model. In this note, we design simple families of Little-Hopfield networks that provably solve this problem affirmatively. As a byproduct, we produce a set of novel (nonlinear) binary codes with an efficient, highly parallelizable denoising mechanism.
