Characterization of a class of weak transport-entropy inequalities on the line

We study an optimal weak transport cost related to the notion of convex order between probability measures. On the real line, we show that this weak transport cost is reached for a coupling that does not depend on the underlying cost function. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for weak transport-entropy inequalities in dimension one. In particular, we obtain a weak transport-entropy form of the convex Poincar{é} inequality in dimension one.

Kantorovich duality for general transport costs and applications

We introduce a general notion of transport cost that encompasses many costs used in the literature (including the classical one and weak transport costs introduced by Talagrand and Marton in the 90's), and prove a Kantorovich type duality theorem. As a by-product we obtain various applications in different directions: we give a short proof of a result by Strassen on the existence of a martingale with given marginals, we characterize the associated transport-entropy inequalities together with the log-Sobolev inequality restricted to convex/concave functions. Some explicit examples of discrete measures satisfying weak transport-entropy inequalities are also given.

First order global asymptotics for confined particles with singular pair repulsion

We study a physical system of $N$ interacting particles in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq1$, subject to pair repulsion and confined by an external field. We establish a large deviations principle for their empirical distribution as $N$ tends to infinity. In the case of Riesz interaction, including Coulomb interaction in arbitrary dimension $d>2$, the rate function is strictly convex and admits a unique minimum, the equilibrium measure, characterized via its potential. It follows that almost surely, the empirical distribution of the particles tends to this equilibrium measure as $N$ tends to infinity. In the more specific case of Coulomb interaction in dimension $d>2$, and when the external field is a convex or increasing function of the radius, then the equilibrium measure is supported in a ring. With a quadratic external field, the equilibrium measure is uniform on a ball.

Transport proofs of weighted Poincaré inequalities for log-concave distributions

We prove, using optimal transport tools, weighted Poincar'e inequalities for log-concave random vectors satisfying some centering conditions. We recover by this way similar results by Klartag and Barthe-Cordero-Erausquin for log-concave random vectors with symmetries. In addition, we prove that the variance conjecture is true for increments of log-concave martingales.

Hamilton Jacobi equations on metric spaces and transport-entropy inequalities

We prove an Hopf-Lax-Oleinik formula for the solutions of some Hamilton- Jacobi equations on a general metric space. As a first consequence, we show in full gener- ality that the log-Sobolev inequality is equivalent to an hypercontractivity property of the Hamilton-Jacobi semi-group. As a second consequence, we prove that Talagrand's transport- entropy inequalities in metric space are characterized in terms of log-Sobolev inequalities restricted to the class of c-convex functions.

A characterization of dimension free concentration in terms of transportation inequalities

The aim of this paper is to show that a probability measure concentrates independently of the dimension like a gaussian measure if and only if it verifies Talagrand's $\T_2$ transportation-cost inequality. This theorem permits us to give a new and very short proof of a result of Otto and Villani. Generalizations to other types of concentration are also considered. In particular, one shows that the Poincaré inequality is equivalent to a certain form of dimension free exponential concentration. The proofs of these results rely on simple Large Deviations techniques.

Functional inequalities for heavy tails distributions and application to isoperimetry

This paper is devoted to the study of probability measures with heavy tails. Using the Lyapunov function approach we prove that such measures satisfy different kind of functional inequalities such as weak Poincaré and weak Cheeger, weighted Poincaré and weighted Cheeger inequalities and their dual forms. Proofs are short and we cover very large situations. For product measures on $\R^n$ we obtain the optimal dimension dependence using the mass transportation method. Then we derive (optimal) isoperimetric inequalities. Finally we deal with spherically symmetric measures. We recover and improve many previous results.

Poincaré inequality for non euclidean metrics and transportation cost inequalities on $\mathbb{R}^d$

In this paper, we consider Poincaré inequalities for non euclidean metrics on $\mathbb{R}^d$. These inequalities enable us to derive precise dimension free concentration inequalities for product measures. This technique is appropriate for a large scope of concentration rate: between exponential and gaussian and beyond. We give different equivalent functional forms of these Poincaré type inequalities in terms of transportation-cost inequalities and infimum convolution inequalities. Workable sufficient conditions are given and a comparison is made with generalized Beckner-Latala-Oleszkiewicz inequalities.
