Full factors and co-amenable inclusions

We show that if $M$ is a full factor and $N \subset M$ is a co-amenable subfactor with expectation, then $N$ is also full. This answers a question of Popa from 1986. We also generalize a theorem of Tomatsu by showing that if $M$ is a full factor and $σ\colon G \curvearrowright M$ is an outer action of a compact group $G$, then $σ$ is automatically minimal and $M^G$ is a full factor which has w-spectral gap in $M$. Finally, in the appendix, we give a proof of the fact that several natural notions of co-amenability for an inclusion $N\subset M$ of von Neumann algebras are equivalent, thus closing the cycle of implications given in Anantharaman-Delaroche's paper in 1995.

A functional analysis proof of Gromov's polynomial growth theorem

The celebrated theorem of Gromov asserts that any finitely generated group with polynomial growth contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index. Alternative proofs have been given by Kleiner and others. In this note, we give yet another proof of Gromov's theorem, along the lines of Shalom and Chifan--Sinclair, which is based on the analysis of reduced cohomology and Shalom's property H_FD.

Haagerup approximation property via bimodules

The Haagerup approximation property (HAP) is defined for finite von Neumann algebras in such a way that the group von Neumann algebra of a discrete group has the HAP if and only if the group itself has the Haagerup property. The HAP has been studied extensively for finite von Neumann algebras and it is recently generalized for arbitrary von Neumann algebras by Caspers-Skalski and Okayasu-Tomatsu. One of the motivations behind the generalization is the fact that quantum group von Neumann algebras are often infinite even though the Haagerup property has been defined successfully for locally compact quantum groups by Daws-Fima-Skalski-White. In this paper, we partly fill this gap by proving that the von Neumann algebra of a locally compact quantum group with the Haagerup property has the HAP. This is new even for genuine locally compact groups.

Noncommutative real algebraic geometry of Kazhdan's property (T)

It is well-known that a finitely generated group $Γ$ has Kazhdan's property (T) if and only if the Laplacian element $Δ$ in ${\mathbb R}[Γ]$ has a spectral gap. In this paper, we prove that this phenomenon is witnessed in ${\mathbb R}[Γ]$. Namely, $Γ$ has property (T) if and only if there are a constant $κ>0$ and a finite sequence $ξ_1,...,ξ_n$ in ${\mathbb R}[Γ]$ such that $Δ^2-κΔ= \sum_i ξ_i^*ξ_i$. This result suggests the possibility of finding new examples of property (T) groups by solving equations in ${\mathbb R}[Γ]$, possibly with an assist of computers.

Group approximation in Cayley topology and coarse geometry, Part III: Geometric property (T)

In this series of papers, we study correspondence between the following: (1) large scale structure of the metric space bigsqcup_m {Cay(G(m))} consisting of Cayley graphs of finite groups with k generators; (2) structure of groups which appear in the boundary of the set {G(m)}_m in the space of k-marked groups. In this third part of the series, we show the correspondence among the metric properties `geometric property (T),' `cohomological property (T),' and the group property `Kazhdan's property (T).' Geometric property (T) of Willett--Yu is stronger than being expander graphs. Cohomological property (T) is stronger than geometric property (T) for general coarse spaces.

A nonseparable amenable operator algebra which is not isomorphic to a C*-algebra

It has been a longstanding problem whether every amenable operator algebra is isomorphic to a (necessarily nuclear) C*-algebra. In this note, we give a nonseparable counterexample. The existence of a separable counterexample remains an open problem. We also initiate a general study of unitarizability of representations of amenable groups in C*-algebras and show that our method cannot produce a separable counterexample.

About the Connes Embedding Conjecture---Algebraic approaches---

This is an expanded lecture note for "Masterclass on sofic groups and applications to operator algebras" (University of Copenhagen, 5-9 November 2012). It is about algebraic aspects of the Connes Embedding Conjecture. It contains new proofs of equivalence of the Connes Embedding Conjecture, Positivstellensatze for trace positive polynomials, Kirchberg's Conjecture, and Tsirelson's Problem.

Tsirelson's Problem and Asymptotically Commuting Unitary Matrices

In this note, we consider quantum correlations of bipartite systems having a slight interaction, and reinterpret Tsirelson's problem (and hence Kirchberg's and Connes's conjectures) in terms of finite-dimensional asymptotically commuting positive operator valued measures. We also consider the systems of asymptotically commuting unitary matrices and formulate the Stronger Kirchberg Conjecture.

Is an irng singly generated as an ideal?

Recall that a rng is a ring which is possibly non-unital. In this note, we address the problem whether every finitely generated idempotent rng (abbreviated as irng) is singly generated as an ideal. It is well-known that it is the case for a commutative irng. We prove here it is also the case for a free rng on finitely many idempotents and for a finite irng. A relation to the Wiegold problem for perfect groups is discussed.

On Ulam stability

We study $ε$-representations of discrete groups by unitary operators on a Hilbert space. We define the notion of Ulam stability of a group which loosely means that finite-dimensional $ε$-represendations are uniformly close to unitary representations. One of our main results is that certain lattices in connected semi-simple Lie groups of higher rank are Ulam stable. For infinite-dimensional $ε$-representations, the similarly defined notion of strong Ulam stability is defined and it is shown that groups with free subgroups are not strongly Ulam stable. We also study deformation rigidity of unitary representations and show that groups containing a free subgroup are not deformation rigid.

Quasi-homomorphism rigidity with noncommutative targets

As a strengthening of Kazhdan's property (T) for locally compact groups, property (TT) was introduced by Burger and Monod. In this paper, we add more rigidity and introduce property (TTT). This property is suited for the study of rigidity phenomena for quasi-homomorphisms with noncommutative targets. Partially upgrading a result of Burger and Monod, we will prove that SL(n,R) with n at least 3 and their lattices have property (TTT). As a corollary, we generalize the well-known fact that every homomorphism from such a lattice into an amenable group or a hyperbolic group has finite image to the extent that it includes a quasi-homomorphism.

Weak Amenability of Hyperbolic Groups

We prove that hyperbolic groups are weakly amenable. This partially extends the result of Cowling and Haagerup showing that lattices in simple Lie groups of real rank one are weakly amenable. We take a combinatorial approach in the spirit of Haagerup and prove that for the word length metric d on a hyperbolic group, the Schur multipliers associated with r^d have uniformly bounded norms for 0<r<1. We then combine this with a Bozejko-Picardello type inequality to obtain weak amenability.
