{T}he Gröbner Basis of a Catalan Path Ideal

For the ideal $I = \langle y_1 + \dots + y_n, y^2_1, \dots , y^2_n \rangle$ in $R = {\mathbb F}[y_1, \dots , y_n]$ with char($\mathbb F$) = 0, we show that the reduced Gröbner basis with lex-order consists of polynomials $g_α$ that are represented in terms of paths, moving northeast in the Cartesian plane, that stay above the diagonal and cross the diagonal at the last step. This implies that a linear basis for the quotient ring $R/I$ is given by a set of Catalan paths. We show that the dimension is the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and height at most two. The graded Frobenius characteristic of $R/I$ as a symmetric group module is given by $\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor } s_{n-k,k}q^k$.

Elliptic and $q$-Analogs of the Fibonomial Numbers

In 2009, Sagan and Savage introduced a combinatorial model for the Fibonomial numbers, integer numbers that are obtained from the binomial coefficients by replacing each term by its corresponding Fibonacci number. In this paper, we present a combinatorial description for the $q$-analog and elliptic analog of the Fibonomial numbers. This is achieved by introducing some $q$-weights and elliptic weights to a slight modification of the combinatorial model of Sagan and Savage.

Flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions

We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs over the set of linear extensions of $\mathcal{P}$. In this more general context, the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ over determines a basis of polynomials. We thus introduce the notion of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, and we prove that the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for flagged $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ is precisely the fundamental slide basis of the polynomial ring, introduced by the first author and Searles. Our main theorem shows that any generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a positive integer linear combination of slide polynomials. As applications, we give a new proof of positivity of the slide product and, motivating our nomenclature, we also prove flagged Schur functions are slide positive.

Cancelation free formula for the antipode of linearized Hopf monoid

Many combinatorial Hopf algebras $H$ in the literature are the functorial image of a linearized Hopf monoid $\bf H$. That is, $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$ or $H=\overline{\mathcal K} ({\bf H})$. Unlike the functor $\overline{\mathcal K}$, the functor ${\mathcal K}$ applied to ${\bf H}$ may not preserve the antipode of ${\bf H}$. In this case, one needs to consider the larger Hopf monoid ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$ to get $H={\mathcal K} ({\bf H})=\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf L}\times{\bf H})$ and study the antipode in ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. One of the main results in this paper provides a cancelation free and multiplicity free formula for the antipode of ${\bf L}\times{\bf H}$. From this formula we obtain a new antipode formula for $H$. We also explore the case when ${\bf H}$ is commutative and cocommutative. In this situation we get new antipode formulas that despite of not being cancelation free, can be used to obtain one for $\overline{\mathcal K}({\bf H})$ in some cases. We recover as well many of the well-known cancelation free formulas in the literature. One of our formulas for computing the antipode in ${\bf H}$ involves acyclic orientations of hypergraphs as the central tool. In this vein, we obtain polynomials analogous to the chromatic polynomial of a graph, and also identities parallel to Stanley's (-1)-color theorem. One of our examples introduces a {\it chromatic} polynomial for permutations which counts increasing sequences of the permutation satisfying a pattern. We also study the statistic obtained after evaluating such polynomial at $-1$. Finally, we sketch $q$ deformations and geometric interpretations of our results. This last part will appear in a sequel paper in joint work with J. Machacek.

A combinatorial proof that Schubert vs. Schur coefficients are nonnegative

We give a combinatorial proof that the product of a Schubert polynomial by a Schur polynomial is a nonnegative sum of Schubert polynomials. Our proof uses Assaf's theory of dual equivalence to show that a quasisymmetric function of Bergeron and Sottile is Schur-positive. By a geometric comparison theorem of Buch and Mihalcea, this implies the nonnegativity of Gromov-Witten invariants of the Grassmannian.

Fan realizations of subword complexes and multi-associahedra via Gale duality

We present complete simplicial fan realizations of any spherical subword complex of type $A_n$ for $n\leq 3$. This provides complete simplicial fan realizations of simplicial multi-associahedra $Δ_{2k+4,k}$, whose facets are in correspondence with $k$-triangulations of a convex $(2k+4)$-gon. This solves the first open case of the problem of finding fan realizations where polytopality is not known. The techniques presented in this paper work for all finite Coxeter groups and we hope that they will be useful to construct fans realizing subword complexes in general. In particular, we present fan realizations of two previously unknown cases of subword complexes of type $A_4$, namely the multi-associahedra $Δ_{9,2}$ and $Δ_{11,3}$.

The Pieri rule for dual immaculate quasi-symmetric functions

The immaculate basis of the non-commutative symmetric functions was recently introduced by the first and third author to lift certain structures in the symmetric functions to the dual Hopf algebras of the non-commutative and quasi-symmetric functions. It was shown that immaculate basis satisfies a positive, multiplicity free right Pieri rule. It was conjectured that the left Pieri rule may contain signs but that it would be multiplicity free. Similarly, it was also conjectured that the dual quasi-symmetric basis would also satisfy a signed multiplicity free Pieri rule. We prove these two conjectures here.

A lift of the Schur and Hall-Littlewood bases to non-commutative symmetric functions

We introduce a new basis of the non-commutative symmetric functions whose commutative images are Schur functions. Dually, we build a basis of the quasi-symmetric functions which expand positively in the fundamental quasi-symmetric functions and decompose Schur functions. We then use the basis to construct a non-commutative lift of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions with similar properties to their commutative counterparts.

Antipode and Primitive elements in the Hopf Monoid of Super Characters

From a recent paper, we recall the Hopf monoid structure on the supercharacters of the unipotent uppertriangular groups over a finite field. We give cancelation free formula for the antipode applied to the bases of class functions and power sum functions, giving new cancelation free formulae for the standard Hopf algebra of supercharacters and symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We also give partial results for the antipode on the supercharacter basis, and explicitly describe the primitives of this Hopf monoid.

Fomin-Greene monoids and Pieri operations

We explore monoids generated by operators on certain infinite partial orders. Our starting point is the work of Fomin and Greene on monoids satisfying the relations $(ur+\u{r+1})\u{r+1}ur=\u{r+1}ur(ur+\u{r+1})$ and $urut=usur$ if $|r-t|>1.$ Given such a monoid, the non-commutative functions in the variables $\u{}$ are shown to commute. Symmetric functions in these operators often encode interesting structure constants. Our aim is to introduce similar results for more general monoids not satisfying the relations of Fomin and Greene. This paper is an extension of a talk by the second author at the workshop on algebraic monoids, group embeddings and algebraic combinatorics at The Fields Institute in 2012.

Relativistic wave equations of n-body systems of fermions and antifermions of various masses in quantum electrodynamics

The variational method in a reformulated Hamiltonian formalism of Quantum Electrodynamics is used to derive relativistic wave equations for systems consisting of n fermions and antifermions of various masses. The derived interaction kernels of these equations include one-photon exchange interactions. The equations have the expected Schroedinger non-relativistic limit. Application to some exotic few lepton systems is discussed briefly.

A supercharacter table decomposition via power-sum symmetric functions

We give an $AB$-factorization of the supercharacter table of the group of $n\times n$ unipotent upper triangular matrices over $\FF_q$, where $A$ is a lower-triangular matrix with entries in $\ZZ[q]$ and $B$ is a unipotent upper-triangular matrix with entries in $\ZZ[q^{-1}]$. To this end we introduce a $q$ deformation of a new power-sum basis of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. The factorization is obtain from the transition matrices between the supercharacter basis, the $q$-power-sum basis and the superclass basis. This is similar to the decomposition of the character table of the symmetric group $S_n$ given by the transition matrices between Schur functions, monomials and power-sums. We deduce some combinatorial results associated to this decomposition. In particular we compute the determinant of the supercharacter table.

Hopf monoids from class functions on unitriangular matrices

We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.

Schubert Polynomials and $k$-Schur functions

The main purpose of this paper is to show that the multiplication of a Schubert polynomial of finite type $A$ by a Schur function, which we refer to as Schubert vs. Schur problem, can be understood from the multiplication in the space of dual $k$-Schur functions. Using earlier work by the second author, we encode both problems by means of quasisymmetric functions. On the Schubert vs. Schur side, we study the poset given by the Bergeron-Sottile's $r$-Bruhat order, along with certain operators associated to this order. On the other side, we connect this poset with a graph on dual $k$-Schur functions given by studying the affine grassmannian order of Lam-Lapointe-Morse-Shimozono. Also, we define operators associated to the graph on dual $k$-Schur functions which are analogous to the ones given for the Schubert vs. Schur problem.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras and Towers of Algebras - Dimension, Quantization, and Functoriality

Bergeron and Li have introduced a set of axioms which guarantee that the Grothendieck groups of a tower of algebras $\bigoplus_{n\ge0}A_n$ can be endowed with the structure of graded dual Hopf algebras. Hivert and Nzeutzhap, and independently Lam and Shimozono constructed dual graded graphs from primitive elements in Hopf algebras. In this paper we apply the composition of these constructions to towers of algebras. We show that if a tower $\bigoplus_{n\ge0}A_n$ gives rise to graded dual Hopf algebras then we must have $\dim(A_n)=r^nn!$ where $r = \dim(A_1)$. In the case $r=1$ we give a conjectural classification. We then investigate a quantum version of the main theorem. We conclude with some open problems and a categorification of the construction. This paper is a full version of the summary arXiv: 0710.3744.

Supercharacters, symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and related Hopf algebras

We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

Basis of Diagonally Alternating Harmonic Polynomials for low degree

Given a list of $n$ cells $L=[(p_1,q_1),...,(p_n, q_n)]$ where $p_i, q_i\in \textbf{Z}_{\ge 0}$, we let $Δ_L=\det |{(p_j!)^{-1}(q_j!)^{-1} x^{p_j}_iy^{q_j}_i} |$. The space of diagonally alternating polynomials is spanned by $\{Δ_L\}$ where $L$ varies among all lists with $n$ cells. For $a>0$, the operators $E_a=\sum_{i=1}^{n} y_i\partial_{x_i}^a$ act on diagonally alternating polynomials and Haiman has shown that the space $A_n$ of diagonally alternating harmonic polynomials is spanned by $\{E_λΔ_n\}$. For $t=(t_m,...,t_1)\in \textbf{Z}_{> 0}^m$ with $t_m>...>t_1>0$, we consider here the operator $F_t=\det\big\|E_{t_{m-j+1}+(j-i)}\big\|$. Our first result is to show that $F_tΔ_L$ is a linear combination of $Δ_{L'}$ where $L'$ is obtained by {\sl moving} $\ell(t)=m$ distinct cells from $L$ in some determined fashion. This allows us to control the leading term of some elements of the form $F_{t_{(1)}}... F_{t_{(r)}}Δ_n$. We use this to describe explicit bases of some of the bihomogeneous components of $A_n=\bigoplus A_n^{k,l}$ where $A_n^{k,l}=\hbox{Span}\{E_λΔ_n :\ell(λ)=l, |λ|=k\}$. More precisely we give an explicit basis of $A_n^{k,l}$ whenever $k<n$. To this end, we introduce a new variation of Schensted insertion on a special class of tableaux. This produces a bijection between partitions and this new class of tableaux. The combinatorics of those tableaux $T$ allows us to know exactly the leading term of $F_TΔ_n$ where $F_T$ is the operator corresponding to the columns of $T$ and whenever $n$ is bigger than the weight of $T$.

The symmetric operation in a free pre-Lie algebra is magmatic

A pre-Lie product is a binary operation whose associator is symmetric in the last two variables. As a consequence its antisymmetrization is a Lie bracket. In this paper we study the symmetrization of the pre-Lie product. We show that it does not satisfy any other universal relation than commutativity. It means that the map from the free commutative-magmatic algebra to the free pre-Lie algebra induced by the symmetrization of the pre-Lie product is injective. This result is in contrast with the associative case, where the symmetrization gives rise to the notion of Jordan algebra. We first give a self-contained proof. Then we give a proof which uses the properties of dendriform and duplicial algebras.

Hyperoctahedral species

We introduce a new definition for the species of type B, or H-species, analog to the classical species (of type A), but on which we consider the action of the groups Bn of signed permutations. We are interested in algebraic structure on these H-species and give examples of Hopf monoids. The natural way to get a graded vector space from a species, given in this paper in terms of functors, will allow us to deepen our understanding of these species. In particular, the image of the classical species of set compositions under a given functor is isomorphic to the combinatorial Hopf algebra DQSym.

Isometry classes of generalized associahedra

Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system acting by reflections on an $\mathbb R$-Euclidean space with simple roots $Δ=\{\a_s | s\in S\}$ of the same length and fundamental weights $Δ^*=\{v_s | s\in S\}$. We set $M(e)=\sum_{s\in S}κ_s v_s$, $κ_s>0$, and for $w\in W$ we set $M(w)=w(M(e))$. The permutahedron $Perm(W)$ is the convex hull of the set $\{M(w) | w\in W\}$. Given a Coxeter element $c\in W$, we have defined in a previous work a generalized associahedron $Asso_c(W)$ whose normal fan is the corresponding $c$-Cambrian fan $F_c$ defined by N. Reading. By construction, $Asso_c(W)$ is obtained from $Perm(W)$ by removing some halfspaces according to a rule prescribed by $c$. In this work, we classify the isometry classes of these realizations. More precisely, for $(W,S)$ an irreducible finite Coxeter system and $c,c'$ two Coxeter elements in $W$, we have that $Asso_{c}(W)$ and $Asso_{c'}(W)$ are isometric if and only if $μ(c') = c$ or $μ(c')=w_0c^{-1}w_0$ for $μ$ an automorphism of the Coxeter graph of $W$ such that $κ_s=κ_{μ(s)}$ for all $s\in S$. As a byproduct, we classify the isometric Cambrian fans of $W$.

A combinatorial basis for the free Lie algebra of the labelled rooted trees

The pre-Lie operad can be realized as a space T of labelled rooted trees. A result of F. Chapoton shows that the pre-Lie operad is a free twisted Lie algebra. That is, the S-module T is obtained as the plethysm of the S-module Lie with an S-module F. In the context of species, we construct an explicit basis of F. This allows us to give a new proof of Chapoton's results. Moreover it permits us to show that F forms a sub nonsymmetric operad of the pre-Lie operad T.

Algebraic Structures on Grothendieck Groups of a Tower of Algebras

The Grothendieck group of the tower of symmetric group algebras has a self-dual graded Hopf algebra structure. Inspired by this, we introduce by way of axioms, a general notion of a tower of algebras and study two Grothendieck groups on this tower linked by a natural paring. Using representation theory, we show that our axioms give a structure of graded Hopf algebras on each Grothendieck groups and these structures are dual to each other. We give some examples to indicate why these axioms are necessary. We also give auxiliary results that are helpful to verify the axioms. We conclude with some remarks on generalized towers of algebras leading to a structure of generalized bialgebras (in the sense of Loday) on their Grothendieck groups.

Posets related to the connectivity set of Coxeter groups

We define the notion of connectivity set for elements of any finitely generated Coxeter group. Then we define an order related to this new statistic and show that the poset is graded and each interval is a shellable lattice. This implies that any interval is Cohen-Macauley. We also give a Galois connection between intervals in this poset and a boolean poset. This allows us to compute the Mobius function for any interval.

Coloured peak algebras and Hopf algebras

For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Hopf algebra. We also have similar results for a $G$-colouring of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebras of planar binary trees. For many of the equivalence relations under study, we obtain a functor from the category of finite abelian groups to the category of graded connected Hopf algebras. We end our investigation by describing a Hopf endomorphism of the $G$-coloured descent Hopf algebra whose image is the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra. We outline a theory of combinatorial $G$-coloured Hopf algebra for which the $G$-coloured quasi-symmetric Hopf algebra and the graded dual to the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra are central objects.

Grothendieck bialgebras, Partition lattices and symmetric functions in noncommutative variables

We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. Invariants and Coinvariants of the Symmetric Group in Noncommuting Variables

The bases for this algebra are indexed by set partitions. We show that there exist a natural inclusion of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions indexed by compositions in this larger space. We also consider this algebra as a subspace of noncommutative polynomials and use it to understand the structure of the spaces of harmonics and coinvariants with respect to this collection of noncommutative polynomials.

The Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and quasisymmetric functions in non-commutative variables are free and cofree

We uncover the structure of the space of symmetric functions in non-commutative variables by showing that the underlined Hopf algebra is both free and co-free. We also introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in non-commutative variables and define the product and coproduct on the monomial basis of this space and show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree. In the process of looking for bases which generate the space we define orders on the set partitions and set compositions which allow us to define bases which have simple and natural rules for the product of basis elements.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations

A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses two canonical Hopf subalgebras on which the character $ζ$ is even (respectively, odd). The odd subalgebra is defined by certain canonical relations which we call the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations. We show that, for $H=QSym$, the generalized Dehn-Sommerville relations are the Bayer-Billera relations and the odd subalgebra is the peak Hopf algebra of Stembridge. We prove that $QSym$ is the product (in the categorical sense) of its even and odd Hopf subalgebras. We also calculate the odd subalgebras of various related combinatorial Hopf algebras: the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations, the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees, the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and of non-commutative symmetric functions.

The peak algebra and the descent algebras of types B and D

We show the existence of a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common peak set, which we call the peak algebra. We show that this algebra is the image of the descent algebra of type B under the map to the descent algebra of type A which forgets the signs, and also the image of the descent algebra of type D. The peak algebra contains a two sided ideal which is defined in terms of interior peaks. This object was introduced in previous work by Nyman; we find that it is the image of certain ideals of the descent algebras of types B and D introduced in previous work of N. Bergeron et al. We derive an exact sequence involving the peak ideal and the peak algebras of degrees $n$ and $n-2$. We obtain this and many other properties of the peak algebra and its peak ideal by first establishing analogous results for signed permutations and then forgetting the signs. In particular, we construct two new commutative semisimple subalgebras of the descent algebra by grouping permutations according to their number of peaks or interior peaks. We discuss the Hopf algebraic structures that exist on the direct sums of these spaces over $n\geq 0$ and explain the connection with previous work of Stembridge; we also obtain new properties of his descents-to-peaks map and construct a type B analog.

Catalan paths, Quasi-symmetric functions and Super-Harmonic Spaces

We investigate the quotient ring $R$ of the ring of formal power series $\Q[[x_1,x_2,...]]$ over the closure of the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-\break symmetric functions. We show that a Hilbert basis of the quotient is naturally indexed by Catalan paths (infinite Dyck paths). We also give a filtration of ideals related to Catalan paths from $(0,0)$ and above the line $y=x-k$. We investigate as well the quotient ring $R_n$ of polynomial ring in $n$ variables over the ideal generated by non-constant quasi-symmetric polynomials. We show that the dimension of $R_n$ is bounded above by the $n$th Catalan number.

Lattice Diagram polynomials in one set of variables

The space $M_{μ/i,j}$ spanned by all partial derivatives of the lattice polynomial $Δ_{μ/i,j}(X;Y)$ is investigated in math.CO/9809126 and many conjectures are given. Here, we prove all these conjectures for the $Y$-free component $M_{μ/i,j}^0$ of $M_{μ/i,j}$. In particular, we give an explicit bases for $M_{μ/i,j}^0$ which allow us to prove directly the central {\sl four term recurrence} for these spaces.

Schur Partial Derivative Operators

A lattice diagram is a finite list L=((p_1,q_1),...,(p_n,q_n) of lattice cells. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is Δ_L(X;Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|. These lattice diagram determinants are crucial in the study of the so-called ``n! conjecture'' of A. Garsia and M. Haiman. The space M_L is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of Δ_L(X;Y). The ``shift operators'', which are particular partial symmetric derivative operators are very useful in the comprehension of the structure of the M_L spaces. We describe here how a Schur function partial derivative operator acts on lattice diagrams with distinct cells in the positive quadrant.

Non-commutative Pieri operators on posets

We consider graded representations of the algebra NC of noncommutative symmetric functions on the Z-linear span of a graded poset P. The matrix coefficients of such a representation give a Hopf morphism from a Hopf algebra HP generated by the intervals of P to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. This provides a unified construction of quasi-symmetric generating functions from different branches of algebraic combinatorics, and this construction is useful for transferring techniques and ideas between these branches. In particular we show that the (Hopf) algebra of Billera and Liu related to Eulerian posets is dual to the peak (Hopf) algebra of Stembridge related to enriched P-partitions, and connect this to the combinatorics of the Schubert calculus for isotropic flag manifolds.

Hopf Algebras and Edge-Labeled Posets

Given a finite graded poset with labeled Hasse diagram, we construct a quasi- symmetric generating function for (saturated) chains whose labels have fixed descents. This is a common generalization of a generating function for the flag f-vector defined by Ehrenborg and of a symmetric function associated to certain edge-labeled posets which arose in the theory of Schubert polynomials. We show this construction gives a Hopf morphism from an incidence algebra of edge-labeled posets to the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions.

Shifted Quasi-Symmetric Functions and the Hopf algebra of peak functions

In his work on P-partitions, Stembridge defined the algebra of peak functions Pi, which is both a subalgebra and a retraction of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. We show that Pi is closed under coproduct, and therefore a Hopf algebra, and describe the kernel of the retraction. Billey and Haiman, in their work on Schubert polynomials, also defined a new class of quasi-symmetric functions --- shifted quasi-symmetric functions --- and we show that Pi is strictly contained in the linear span Xi of shifted quasi-symmetric functions. We show that Xi is a coalgebra, and compute the rank of the n-th graded component.

A Pieri-type formula for isotropic flag manifolds

We give the formula for multiplying a Schubert class on an odd orthogonal or symplectic flag manifold by a special Schubert class pulled back from a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces. This is also the formula for multiplying a type $B$ (respectively, type $C$) Schubert polynomial by the Schur $P$-polynomial $p_m$ (respectively, the Schur $Q$-polynomial $q_m$). Geometric constructions and intermediate results allow us to ultimately deduce this from formulas for the classical flag manifold. These intermediate results are concerned with the Bruhat order of the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$, identities of the structure constants for the Schubert basis of cohomology, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We show these identities follow from the Pieri-type formula, except some `hidden symmetries' of the structure constants. Our analysis leads to a new partial order on the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$ and formulas for many of these structure constants.

A Monoid for the Universal K-Bruhat Order

Structure constants for the multiplication of Schubert polynomials by Schur symmetric polynomials are known to be related to the enumeration of chains in a new partial order on S_\infty, which we call the universal k-Bruhat order. Here we present a monoid M for this order and show that $M$ is analogous to the nil-Coxeter monoid for the weak order on S_\infty. For this, we develop a theory of reduced sequences for M. We use these sequences to give a combinatorial description of the structure constants above. We also give combinatorial proofs of some of the symmetry relations satisfied by these structure constants.

Schubert polynomials, the Bruhat order, and the geometry of flag manifolds

We illuminate the relation between the Bruhat order on the symmetric group and structure constants (Littlewood-Richardson coefficients) for the cohomology of the flag manifold in terms of its basis of Schubert classes. Equivalently, the structure constants for the ring of polynomials in variables $x_1,x_2,...$ in terms of its basis of Schubert polynomials. We use combinatorial, algebraic, and geometric methods, notably a study of intersections of Schubert varieties and maps between flag manifolds. We establish a number of new identities among these structure constants. This leads to formulas for some of these constants and new results on the enumeration of chains in the Bruhat order. A new graded partial order on the symmetric group which contains Young's lattice arises from these investigations. We also derive formulas for certain specializations of Schubert polynomials.

Skew Schubert functions and the Pieri formula for flag manifolds

We show the equivalence of the Pieri formula for flag manifolds and certain identities among the structure constants, giving new proofs of both the Pieri formula and of these identities. A key step is the association of a symmetric function to a finite poset with labeled Hasse diagram satisfying a symmetry condition. This gives a unified definition of skew Schur functions, Stanley symmetric function, and skew Schubert functions (defined here). We also use algebraic geometry to show the coefficient of a monomial in a Schubert polynomial counts certain chains in the Bruhat order, obtaining a new combinatorial construction of Schubert polynomials.
