Decomposing groups by codimension-1 subgroups

The paper is concerned with Kropholler's conjecture on splitting a finitely generated group over a codimension-1 subgroup. For a subgroup H of a group G, we define the notion of "finite splitting height" which generalises the finite-height property. By considering the dual CAT(0) cube complex associated to a codimension-1 subgroup H in G, we show that the Kropholler-Roller conjecture holds when H has finite splitting height in G. Examples of subgroups of finite height are stable subgroups or more generally strongly quasiconvex subgroups. Examples of subgroups of finite splitting height include relatively quasiconvex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually polycyclic peripheral subgroups. In particular, our results extend Stallings' theorem and generalise a theorem of Sageev on decomposing a hyperbolic group by quasiconvex subgroups.

Fibering flat manifolds of diagonal type and their fundamental groups

An $n$-dimensional closed flat manifold is said to be of diagonal type if the standard representation of its holonomy group $G$ is diagonal. An $n$-dimensional Bieberbach group of diagonal type is the fundamental group of such a manifold. We introduce the diagonal Vasquez invariant of $G$ as the least integer $n_d(G)$ such that every flat manifold of diagonal type with holonomy $G$ fibers over a flat manifold of dimension at most $n_d(G)$ with flat torus fibers. Using a combinatorial description of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type, we give both upper and lower bounds for this invariant. We show that the lower bounds are exact when $G$ has low rank. We apply this to analyse diffuseness properties of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type. This leads to a complete classification of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type with Klein four-group holonomy and to an application to Kaplansky's Unit Conjecture.

Crystallographic actions on contractible algebraic manifolds

We study properly discontinuous and cocompact actions of a discrete subgroup $Γ$ of an algebraic group $G$ on a contractible algebraic manifold $X$. We suppose that this action comes from an algebraic action of $G$ on $X$ such that a maximal reductive subgroup of $G$ fixes a point. When the real rank of any simple subgroup of $G$ is at most one or the dimension of $X$ is at most three, we show that $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic. When $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic, we show that $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic. When $Γ$ is virtually polycyclic, we show that the action reduces to a NIL-affine crystallographic action. As applications, we prove that the generalized Auslander conjecture for NIL-affine actions holds up to dimension six and give a new proof of the fact that every virtually polycyclic group admits a NIL-affine crystallographic action.

Complete Bredon cohomology and its applications to hierarchically defined groups

By considering the Bredon analogue of complete cohomology of a group, we show that every group in the class $\LHFF$ of type Bredon-$\FP_\infty$ admits a finite dimensional model for $\EFG$. We also show that abelian-by-infinite cyclic groups admit a $3$-dimensional model for the classifying space for the family of virtually nilpotent subgroups. This allows us to prove that for $\mF,$ the class of virtually cyclic groups, the class of $\LHFF$-groups contains all locally virtually soluble groups and all linear groups over $\mathbb C$ of integral characteristic.

Bredon cohomological dimensions for groups acting on CAT(0)-spaces

Let G be a group acting isometrically with discrete orbits on a separable complete CAT(0)-space of bounded topological dimension. Under certain conditions, we give upper bounds for the Bredon cohomological dimension of G for the families of finite and virtually cyclic subgroups. As an application, we prove that the mapping class group of any closed, connected, and orientable surface of genus g greater than 1 admits a (9g-8)-dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. In addition, our results apply to fundamental groups of graphs of groups and groups acting on Euclidean buildings. In particular, we show that all finitely generated linear groups of positive characteristic have a finite dimensional classifying space for proper actions and a finite dimensional classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We also show that every generalized Baumslag-Solitar group has a 3-dimensional model for the classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers.

Geometric dimension of groups for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups

By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than the geometric dimension for proper actions. This answers a question posed by W. Lueck.

Characteristic classes for cohomology of split Hopf algebra extensions

We introduce characteristic classes for the spectral sequence associated to a split short exact sequence of Hopf algebras. We show that these characteristic classes can be seen as obstructions for the vanishing of differentials in the spectral sequence and prove a decomposition theorem. We also interpret our results in the settings of group and Lie algebra extensions and prove some interesting corollaries concerning the collapse of the (Lyndon-)Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence and the order of characteristic classes.

Commensurators and classifying spaces with virtually cyclic stabilizers

By examining commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we show that for each natural number n, any locally finite-by-virtually cyclic group of cardinality aleph_n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+3. As a corollary, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length and cardinality aleph_n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers.

F-structures and Bredon-Galois cohomology

Let F be an arbitrary family of subgroups of a group G and let Orb be the associated orbit category. We investigate interpretations of low dimensional F-Bredon cohomology of G in terms of abelian extensions of Orb. Specializing to fixed point functors as coefficients, we derive several group theoretic applications and introduce Bredon-Galois cohomology. We prove an analog of Hilbert's Theorem 90 and show that the second Bredon-Galois cohomology is a certain intersection of relative Brauer groups. As applications, we realize the relative Brauer group Br(L/K) of a finite separable non-normal extension of fields L/K as a second Bredon cohomology group and show that this approach is quite suitable for finding nonzero elements in Br(L/K).

Intermediaries in Bredon (Co)homology and Classifying Spaces

For certain contractible G-CW-complexes and F a family of subgroups of G, we construct a spectral sequence converging to the F-Bredon cohomology of G with E1-terms given by the F-Bredon cohomology of the stabilizer subgroups. As applications, we obtain several corollaries concerning the cohomological and geometric dimensions of the classifying space for the family F. We also introduce a hierarchically defined class of groups which contains all countable elementary amenable groups and countable linear groups of characteristic zero, and show that if a group G is in this class, then G has finite F-Bredon (co)homological dimension if and only if G has jump F-Bredon (co)homology.

On cohomology of crystallographic groups with cyclic holonomy of split type

We disprove a conjecture stating that the integral cohomology of any crystallographic group Z^n \rtimes Z_m is given by the cohomology of Z_m with coefficients in the cohomology of the group Z^n, by providing a complete list of counterexamples up to dimension 5. We also find a counterexample with odd order holonomy, m=9, in dimension 8 and finish the computations of the cohomology of 6-dimensional crystallographic groups arising as orbifold fundamental groups of certain Calabi-Yau toroidal orbifolds.

On cohomology of split Lie algebra extensions

We introduce the notion of compatible actions in the context of split extensions of finite dimensional Lie algebras over a field. Using compatible actions, we construct a new resolution to compute the cohomology of semi-direct products of Lie algebras. We also give an alternative way to construct the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence associated to a split extension of finite dimensional Lie algebras and obtain a sharper bound for the length of this spectral sequence.
