Tackling excess noise from bilinear and nonlinear couplings in gravitational-wave interferometers

We describe a tool we improved to detect excess noise in the gravitational wave (GW) channel arising from its bilinear or nonlinear coupling with fluctuations of various components of a GW interferometer and its environment. We also describe a higher-order statistics tool we developed to characterize these couplings, e.g., by unraveling the frequencies of the fluctuations contributing to such noise, and demonstrate its utility by applying it to understand nonlinear couplings in Advanced LIGO engineering data. Once such noise is detected, it is highly desirable to remove it or correct for it. Such action in the past has been shown to improve the sensitivity of the instrument in searches of astrophysical signals. If this is not possible, then steps must be taken to mitigate its influence, e.g., by characterizing its effect on astrophysical searches. We illustrate this through a study of the effect of transient sine-Gaussian noise artifacts on a compact binary coalescence template bank.

Astrophysical motivation for directed searches for a stochastic gravitational wave background

The nearby universe is expected to create an anisotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Different algorithms have been developed and implemented to search for isotropic and anisotropic SGWB. The aim of this paper is to quantify the advantage of an optimal anisotropic search, specifically comparing a point source with an isotropic background. Clusters of galaxies appear as point sources to a network of ground based laser interferometric detectors. The optimal search strategy for these sources is a "directed radiometer search". We show that the flux of SGWB created by the millisecond pulsars in the Virgo cluster produces a significantly stronger signal than the nearly isotropic background of unresolved sources of the same kind. We compute their strain power spectra for different cosmologies and distribution of population over redshifts. We conclude that a localised source, like the Virgo cluster, can be resolved from the isotropic background with very high significance using the directed search algorithm. For backgrounds dominated by nearby sources, up to redshift of about 3, we show that the directed search for a localised source can have signal to noise ratio more than that for the all sky integrated isotropic search.

Hawking Like radiation from the Dynamic horizon in Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Model of the Universe : Quantum Prescription

Recent progress of black hole thermodynamics due to Hawking radiation has been applied to universal thermodynamics with universe as inhomogeneous LTB model. Hawking-like temperature with quantum corrections has been evaluated using HJ method and the semiclassical part of the temperature coincides with that formulated in radial null geodesic method.

Hawking-like radiation from the apparent horizon in an FRW Universe : Quantum Corrections

In this paper we study Hawking-like radiation in a FRW-Universe using semi-classical tunnelling approach and the Hamilton-Jacobi method. Radial null geodesics are used to picture the process as a "tunnelling" of particles from behind the apparent horizon and Hawking -like temperature has been calculated. Quantum corrections have been evaluated in the Hamilton-Jacobi Method by solving Klein-Gordan wave equation and the temperature agrees at the semiclassical level. Also it is found that Hamilton-Jacobi formalism does not depend on the choice of the coordinate system. Finally, leading order corrections to entropy has been calculated.

Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model of the universe and Hawking radiation of a dynamical horizon

The paper deals with anisotropic spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model of the universe bounded by the apparent horizon. Using Hamilton-Jacobi method for both massive and massless test particles, we are able to show that the temperature associated with the apparent horizon due to Hawking radiation is the usual Hawking Temperature. Also the usual Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model and the transformed r-gauge Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model are shown to be equivalent. Finally, the results of Tunneling approach agree with the Hamiltonian-Jacobi method.

Quantum tunnelling for Hawking radiation from a dynamical Black Hole

The paper deals with Hawking radiation related to non-static spherically symmetric black hole. Quantum corrections are incorporated using Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond semi-classical approximation. It is found that different order correction terms satisfy identical differential equation as the semiclassical action and are solved by a typical technique. It has been shown that with proper choice of the proportionality factors, one loop back reaction effect in the space time can be obtained. Finally, using the law of black hole mechanics, a general modified form of the black hole entropy is obtained considering modified Hawking temperature.

Quantum Tunnelling of non-zero mass particle and evolution of the horizon for a static black hole

In this work, we study Hawking radiation from a general static black hole due to tunnelling of particle having nonzero mass. Hawking temperature has been calculated using both the tunnelling method and the Hamilton-Jacobi method and the results do no depend on the mass of the particle. Due to complicated form of the equations involved quantum corrections are evaluated only upto first order and it is possible to interprete the correction term as loop corrections of the back reaction effects in the space time. Finally, modified expressions for entropy and surface gravity has been evaluated and it is found that the leading order correction term to the entropy is not necessarily logarithmic in nature.

Accretion of Holographic Dark Energy : Dependency only upon Horizon Radius of Expanding Universe

In this paper we deal with accretion of dark energy in the holographic dark energy model for a general non-rotating static spherically symmetric black hole. The mass of the black hole increases or decreases depending on the nature of the holographic dark energy (quintessence or phantom) as well as on some integration parameters. It is to be illustrated that the enhancement or reduction of mass of a black hole is independent of the mass or size of the black hole itself. Rather it depends only upon the radius of the event horizon of the universe. Finally, the generalized second law of thermodynamics has been studied on the event horizon to be assured that the law holds even if when the black hole mass is decreasing though it is engrossing some mass.

Emergent scenario and different anisotropic models

In this work, Emergent Universe scenario has been developed in general homogeneous anisotropic model and for the inhomogeneus LTB model. In the first case, it is assumed that the matter in the universe has two components - one is perfect fluid with barotropic equation of state $p=ωρ$ ($ω$, a constant) and the other component is a real or phantom (or tachyonic) scalar field. In the second case, the universe is only filled with a perfect fluid and possibilities for the existence of emergent scenario has been examined.

Holographic Dark Energy Model: State Finder Parameters

In this work, we have studied interacting holographic dark energy model in the background of FRW model of the universe. The interaction is chosen either in linear combination or in product form of the matter densities for dark matter and dark energy. The IR cut off for holographic dark energy is chosen as Ricci's length scale or radius of the future event horizon. The analysis is done using the state finder parameter and coincidence problem has been graphically presented. Finally, universal thermodynamics has been studied using state finder parameters.

How does Inflation Depend Upon the Nature of Fluids Filling Up the Universe in Brane World Scenario

By constructing different parameters which are able to give us the information about our universe during inflation,(specially at the start and the end of the inflationary universe) a brief idea of brane world inflation is given in this work. What will be the size of the universe at the end of inflation,i.e.,how many times will it grow than today's size is been speculated and analysed thereafter. Different kinds of fluids are taken to be the matter inside the brane. It is observed that in the case of highly positive pressure grower gas like polytropic, the size of the universe at the end of inflation is comparitively smaller. Whereas for negative pressure creators (like chaplygin gas) this size is much bigger. Except thse two cases, inflation has been studied for barotropic fluid and linear redshift parametrization $ω(z) = ω_{0} + ω_{1} z$ too. For them the size of the universe after inflation is much more high. We also have seen that this size does not depend upon the potential energy at the end of the inflation. On the contrary, there is a high impact of the initial potential energy upon the size of inflation.

Interacting Holographic Dark Energy at the Ricci scale and Dynamical system

In this work, we consider homogeneous and isotropic FRW model of the universe, filled with interacting dark matter and dark energy. The dark matter is chosen as usual in the form of dust while dark energy is holographic in nature with IR cut off at the Ricci's length and it is in the form of a perfect fluid with variable equation of state. We have chosen the interaction term of the following two types: (i) a linear combination of the matter density of the two fluids, (ii) a product of the two matter densities. For both the choices the evolution equations are transformed to an autonomous system and the corresponding critical points are analyzed. Finally, for the first choice of the interaction term the evolution of the ratio of the energy densities has been studied from the point of view of the present coincidence problem.

Scalar tensor theory : validity of Cosmic no hair conjecture

The paper deals with cosmic no hair conjecture in scalar tensor theory of gravity. Here we have considered both Jordan frame and Einstein frame to examine the conjecture. In Jordan frame, one should restrict both the coupling function of the scalar field and the coupling parameter in addition to the ususal energy conditions for the the matter field for the validity of CNHC while in Einstein frame the restrictions are purely on the energy conditions.

Universal Thermodynamics with state finder parameters: A general prescription

The work deals with universal thermodynamics for flat FRW model, considering interacting $n-$fluid system. By introducing the state finder parameters, the feasible regions in the $\{r,s\}-$plane has been examined for the validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics. A general prescription for the evolution of the horizon has been derived for general non-static spherically symmetric space time and then it is applied to FRW universe. A general restriction on the matter has been found for the validity of GSLT.

Cosmological Evolution Across Phantom Crossing and the Nature of the Horizon

In standard cosmology, with the evolution of the universe, the matter density and thermodynamic pressure gradually decreases. Also in course of evolution, the matter in the universe obeys (or violates) some restrictions or energy conditions. If the matter distribution obeys strong energy condition (SEC), the universe is in a decelerating phase while violation of SEC indicates an accelerated expansion of the universe. In the period of accelerated expansion the matter may be either of quintessence nature or of phantom nature depending on the fulfilment of the weak energy condition (WEC) or violation of it. As recent observational evidences demand that the universe is going through an accelerated expansion so mater should be either quintessence or phantom in nature. In the present work we study the evolution of the universe through the phantom barrier (i.e. the dividing line between the quintessence and phantom era) and examine how apparent and event horizon change across the barrier. Finally, we investigate the possibility of occurrence of any singularity in phantom era.

FRW Universe in Horava Gravity

Recently, a field theoretic model for a UV complete theory of gravity has been proposed by Horava. This theory is a non-relativistic renormalizable gravity theory which coincides with Einstein's general relativity at large distances. Subsequently Lü et al have formulated the modified Friedmann equations and have presented a solution in vacuum. In the present work, we rewrite the modified FRW equations in the form of usual FRW equations in Einstein gravity and consequences has been analyzed. Also the thermodynamics of the FRW universe has been studied.

Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics on the Event Horizon for Interacting Dark Energy

Here we are trying to find the conditions for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) assuming the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizon in both cases when the FRW universe is filled with interacting two fluid system- one in the form of cold dark matter and the other is either holographic dark energy or new age graphic dark energy. Using the recent observational data we have found that GSLT holds both in quintessence era as well as in phantom era for new age graphic model while for holographic dark energy GSLT is valid only in phantom era.

Interacting Three Fluid System and Thermodynamics of the Universe Bounded by the Event Horizon

The work deals with the thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon. The matter in the universe has three constituents namely dark energy, dark matter and radiation in nature and interaction between then is assumed. The variation of entropy of the surface of the horizon is obtained from unified first law while matter entropy variation is calculated from the Gibbss' law. Finally, validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics is examined and conclusions are written point wise.

Scalar-Tensor Theory of Gravity and Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics on the Event Horizon

In blackhole physics, the second law of thermodynamics is generally valid whether the blackhole is a static or a non-static one. Considering the universe as a thermodynamical system the second law of blackhole dynamics extends to the non-negativity of the sum of the entropy of the matter and the horizon, known as generalized second law of thermodynamics(GSLT). Here, we have assumed the universe to be bounded by the event-horizon or filled with perfect fluid and holographic dark energy in two cases. Thus considering entropy to be an arbitrary function of the area of the event-horizon, we have tried to find the conditions and the restrictions over the scalar field and equation of state for the validity of the GSLT and both in quintessence-era and in phantom-era in scalar tensor theory.

The generalized second law of thermodynamics and the nature of the Entropy Function

In black hole physics, the second law of thermodynamics is generally valid whether the black hole is a static or a non-static one. Considering the universe as a thermodynamical system the second law of black hole dynamics extends to the non-negativity of the sum of the entropy of the matter and the horizon, known as generalized second law of thermodynamics(GSLT). Here, we have assumed the universe to be bounded by the event-horizon where Bekenstein entropy-area relation and Hawking-temperature are not applicable. Thus considering entropy to be an arbitrary function of the area of the event-horizon, we have tried to find the nature of the entropy-function for the validity of the GSLT both in quintessence-era and in phantom-era. Finally, some graphical representation of the entropy-function has been presented.

The generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon and modified gravity theories

In this paper, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon. Here we consider homogeneous and isotropic model of the universe filled with perfect fluid in one case and in another case holographic model of the universe has been considered. In the third case the matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system as holographic dark energy and dust. Here we study the above cases in the Modified gravity, f(R) gravity.

Thermodynamics of Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Model

Here we consider our universe as inhomogeneous spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi Model and analyze the thermodynamics of this model of the universe. The trapping horizon is calculated and is found to coincide with the apparent horizon. The Einstein field equations are shown to be equivalent with the unified first law of thermodynamics. Finally assuming the first law of thermodynamics validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics is examined at the apparent horizon for the perfect fluid and at the event horizon for holographic dark energy.

In this paper, we examine the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) of the universe bounded by the event horizon in brane-world gravity. Here we consider homogeneous and isotropic model of the universe filled with perfect fluid in one case and in another case holographic dark energy model of the universe has been considered. The conclusions are presented point wise.

Validity of the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics of the Universe Bounded by the Event Horizon in Holographic Dark Energy Model

In this letter, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics of the universe bounded by the event horizon in the holographic dark energy model. The universe is chosen to be homogeneous and isotropic and the validity of the first law has been assumed here. The matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system- one component is the holographic dark energy model and the other component is in the form of dust.

We study the thermodynamics of the universe containing perfect fluid with equation of state $p=ωρ,ω$ is variable. Here we choose $ω$ to be a function of the red shift variable $z$ and four different choices of $ω$ has been investigated. Also the laws of thermodynamics are examined considering the universe bounded by the horizon (apparent) as a thermodynamical system.
