KMS states of quasi-free dynamics on $C^*$-algebras of product systems over right LCM monoids

We generalise recent results of Afsar, Larsen and Neshveyev for product systems over quasi-lattice orders by showing that the equilibrium states of quasi-free dynamics on the Nica-Toeplitz $C^*$-algebras of product systems over right LCM monoids must satisfy a positivity condition encoded in a system of inequalities satisfied by their restrictions to the coefficient algebra. We prove that the reduction of this positivity condition to a finite subset of inequalities is valid for a wider class of monoids that properly includes finite-type Artin monoids, answering a question left open in their work. Our main technical tool is a combinatorially generated tree modelled on a recent construction developed by Boyu Li for dilations of contractive representations. We also obtain a reduction of the positivity condition to inequalities arising from a certain minimal subset that may not be finite but has the advantage of holding for all Noetherian right LCM monoids, and we present an example, arising from a finite-type Artin monoid, that exhibits a gap in its inverse temperature space.

Partial actions and KMS states on relative graph $C^*$-algebras

The relative graph $C^*$-algebras introduced by Muhly and Tomforde are generalizations of both graph algebras and their Toeplitz extensions. For an arbitrary graph $E$ and a subset $R$ of the set of regular vertices of $E$ we show that the relative graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E, R)$ is isomorphic to a partial crossed product for an action of the free group generated by the edge set on the relative boundary path space. Given a time evolution on $C^*(E, R)$ induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS$_β$ states and ground states using an abstract result of Exel and Laca. Guided by their work on KMS states for Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger type algebras associated to infinite matrices, we obtain complete descriptions of the convex sets of KMS states of finite type and of KMS states of infinite type whose associated measures are supported on recurrent infinite paths. This allows us to give a complete concrete description of the convex set of all KMS states for a big class of graphs which includes all finite graphs.

Positive definite $*$-spherical functions, property (T), and $C^*$-completions of Gelfand pairs

The study of existence of a universal $C^*$-completion of the $^*$-algebra canonically associated to a Hecke pair was initiated by Hall, who proved that the Hecke algebra associated to $(\operatorname{SL}_2(\Qp), \operatorname{SL}_2(\Zp))$ does not admit a universal $C^*$-completion. Kaliszewski, Landstad and Quigg studied the problem by placing it in the framework of Fell-Rieffel equivalence, and highlighted the role of other $C^*$-completions. In the case of the pair $(\operatorname{SL}_n(\Qp), \operatorname{SL}_n(\Zp))$ for $n\geq 3$ we show, invoking property (T) of $\operatorname{SL}_n(\Qp)$, that the $C^*$-completion of the $L^1$-Banach algebra and the corner of $C^*(\operatorname{SL}_n(\Qp))$ determined by the subgroup are distinct. In fact, we prove a more general result valid for a simple algebraic group of rank at least $2$ over a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic field with a good choice of a maximal compact open subgroup.

Inner coactions, Fell bundles, and abstract uniqueness theorems

We prove gauge-invariant uniqueness theorems with respect to maximal and normal coactions for $C^*$-algebras associated to product systems of $C^*$-correspondences. Our techniques of proof are developed in the abstract context of Fell bundles. We employ inner coactions to prove an essential-inner uniqueness theorem for Fell bundles. As application, we characterise injectivity of homomorphisms on Nica's Toeplitz algebra $\Tt(G, P)$ of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G, P)$ in the presence of a finite non-trivial set of lower bounds for all non-trivial elements in $P$.

KMS states on Nica-Toeplitz algebras of product systems

We investigate KMS states of Fowler's Nica-Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{NT}(X)$ associated to a compactly aligned product system $X$ over a semigroup $P$ of Hilbert bimodules. This analysis relies on restrictions of these states to the core algebra which satisfy appropriate scaling conditions. The concept of product system of finite type is introduced. If $(G, P)$ is a lattice ordered group and $X$ is a product system of finite type over $P$ satisfying certain coherence properties, we construct KMS$_β$ states of $\NT(X)$ associated to a scalar dynamics from traces on the coefficient algebra of the product system. Our results were motivated by, and generalize some of the results of Laca and Raeburn obtained for the Toeplitz algebra of the affine semigroup over the natural numbers.

The 2-adic ring $C^*$-algebra of the integers and its representations

We study the 2-adic version of the ring $C^*$-algebra of the integers. First, we work out the precise relation between the Cuntz algebra $\cO_2$ and our 2-adic ring $C^*$-algebra in terms of representations. Secondly, we prove a 2-adic duality theorem identifying the crossed product arising from 2-adic affine transformations on the 2-adic numbers with the analogous crossed product algebra over the real numbers. And finally, as an outcome of this duality result, we construct an explicit imprimitivity bimodule and prove that it transports one canonical representation into the other.

Dilations of semigroup crossed products as crossed products of dilations

Laca constructed a minimal automorphic dilation for every semigroup dynamical system arising from an action of an Ore semigroup by injective endomorphisms of a unital $C^*$-algebra. Here we show that the semigroup crossed product with its action by inner endomorphisms given by the implementing isometries has as minimal automorphic dilation the group crossed product of the original dilation. Applications include recent examples studied by Cuntz and the second named author.

Co-universal algebras associated to product systems, and gauge-invariant uniqueness theorems

Let X be a product system over a quasi-lattice ordered group. Under mild hypotheses, we associate to X a C*-algebra which is co-universal for injective Nica covariant Toeplitz representations of X which preserve the gauge coaction. Under appropriate amenability criteria, this co-universal C*-algebra coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra introduced by Sims and Yeend. We prove two key uniqueness theorems, and indicate how to use our theorems to realise a number of reduced crossed products as instances of our co-universal algebras. In each case, it is an easy corollary that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra is isomorphic to the corresponding full crossed product.
