First detection of collective oscillations of a stored deuteron beam with an amplitude close to the quantum limit

We investigated coherent betatron oscillations of a deuteron beam in the storage ring COSY, excited by a detuned radio-frequency Wien filter. The beam oscillations were detected by conventional beam position monitors. With the currently available apparatus, we show that oscillation amplitudes down to \SI{1}{\micro \meter} can be detected. The interpretation of the response of the stored beam to the detuned radio-frequency Wien filter is based on simulations of the beam evolution in the lattice of the ring and realistic time-dependent 3D field maps of the Wien filter. Future measurements of the electric dipole moment of protons will, however, require control of the relative position of counter-propagating beams in the sub-picometer range. Since here the stored beam can be considered as a rarefied gas of uncorrelated particles, we moreover demonstrate that the amplitudes of the zero-point (ground state) betatron oscillations of individual particles are only a factor of about 10 larger than the Heisenberg uncertainty limit. As a consequence of this, we conclude that quantum mechanics does not preclude the control of the beam centroids to sub-picometer accuracy. The smallest Lorentz force exerted on a single particle that we have been able to determine is \SI{10}{aN}.

A New Beam Polarimeter at COSY to Search for Electric Dipole Moments of Charged Particles

A calorimetric polarimeter based on inorganic LYSO scintillators is described. It has been designed for use in a storage ring to search for electric dipole moments (EDM) of charged particles such as the proton and deuteron. Its development and first use was on the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich with 0.97 GeV/c polarized deuterons, a particle and energy suitable for an EDM search. The search requires a polarimeter with high efficiency, large analyzing power, and stable operating characteristics. With typical beam momenta of about 1 GeV/c, the scattering of protons or deuterons from a carbon target into forward angles becomes a nearly optimal choice of an analyzing reaction. The polarimeter described here consists of 52 LYSO detector modules, arranged in 4 symmetric blocks (up, down, left, right) for energy determination behind plastic scintillators for particle identification via energy loss. The commissioning results of the current setup demonstrate that the polarimeter is ready to be employed in a first direct search for an EDM on the deuteron, which is planned at COSY in the next two years.

General relativity and precision tests of fundamental symmetries

Search for the Electric Dipole Moment of nuclear particles is at the forefront of incessant quest for CP violation beyond Standard Model. The ultimate target is to reach a sensitivity to the electric dipole moment of neutrons, protons, deuterons etc. at the level of $\sim 10^{-15}$ nuclear magnetons. Defying the common lore on weakness of gravity, spurious signals induced by curved space-time in the gravity field of the rotating Earth become quite substantial at such a daunting sensitivity. We review the recent development in the field with an emphasis on the geometric magnetic field in pure electrostatic systems at rest on the rotating Earth.

Measurement of deuteron carbon vector analyzing powers in the kinetic energy range 170-380 MeV

A measurement of vector analyzing powers in elastic deuteron-carbon scattering has been performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. Seven kinetic beam energies between 170 and 380 MeV have been used. A vector-polarized beam from a polarized deuteron source was injected, accelerated to the final desired energy and stored in COSY. A thin needle-shaped diamond strip was used as a carbon target, onto which the beam was slowly steered. Elastically scattered deuterons were identified in the forward direction using various layers of scintillators and straw tubes. Where data exist in the literature (at 200 and 270 MeV), excellent agreement of the angular shape was found. The beam polarization of the presented data was deduced by fitting the absolute scale of the analyzing power to these references. Our results extend the world data set and are necessary for polarimetry of future electric dipole moment searches at storage rings. They will as well serve as an input for theoretical description of polarized hadron-hadron scattering.

Nonvanishing magnetic field in pure electrostatic systems at rest in the curved space-time of Earth

Solutions of the Maxwell equations for electrostatic systems at rest on the rotating Earth's surface are shown to exhibit a nonvanishing magnetic field despite zero electric currents in the system. Such a field is of pure geometric origin, and in contrast to the conventional magnetic field of the Earth it can not be screened away by magnetic shielding. A practical significance of this magnetic field is that its EDM-like background signal would persist in the much discussed searches for the EDM of charged particles of magic energy trapped in all electric storage rings, as well as in the neutron EDM experiments.

Parity violation in high-energy proton-proton scattering

A new approach is proposed to describe the parity violation in the process of scattering of a polarized proton by a proton at high energies. It is shown that in the tree approximation the P-odd amplitude of proton-proton scattering is substantially smaller than the P-odd amplitude in proton-neutron scattering. The main source of P-odd asymmetry in proton-proton scattering is radiative corrections due to the charge-exchange strong interaction. We predict that the asymmetry in the inelastic cross section is substantially less than the asymmetry in the elastic cross section.

Possibility to investigate P-parity violation in nuclear collisions at facility NICA

A possible experimental setup for measuring the effect of parity violation in the interaction of the polarized proton or deuteron beams with an unpolarized target is discussed. One possibility is investigation of scattering of the proton or deuteron polarized beams on a thick internal target in one of the rings of the NICA collider. In this case, the spin of a circulating particles is transformed into a mode precessing in the horizontal plane using an RF flipper. The effect of parity violation will be studied by measuring the correlation of the interaction cross section of particles and the direction of their spins. In an alternative approach, the flipper transforms the spins of particles into a horizontal plane and the beam is extracted into the channel in a certain phase of the precession. In this more traditional experimental setup, the total cross section of the passage of particles through a dense target is measured, depending on the sign of the helicity of the polarization of the beam.

Spin dynamics investigations for the EDM experiment at COSY

Precision experiments, such as the search for a deuteron electric dipole moments using a storage rings like COSY, demand for an understanding of the spin dynamics with unprecedented accuracy. In such an enterprise, numerical predictions play a crucial role for the development and later application of spin-tracking algorithms. Various measurement concepts involving polarization effects induced by an RF Wien filter and static solenoids in COSY are discussed. The matrix formalism, applied here, deals \textit{solely} with spin rotations \textit{on the closed orbit} of the machine, and is intended to provide \textit{numerical} guidance for the development of beam and spin-tracking codes for rings that employ realistic descriptions of the electric and magnetic bending and focusing elements, solenoids etc., and a realistically-modeled RF Wien filter.

Toward polarized antiprotons: Machine development for spin-filtering experiments

The paper describes the commissioning of the experimental equipment and the machine studies required for the first spin-filtering experiment with protons at a beam kinetic energy of $49.3\,$MeV in COSY. The implementation of a low-$β$ insertion made it possible to achieve beam lifetimes of $τ_{\rm{b}}=8000\,$s in the presence of a dense polarized hydrogen storage-cell target of areal density $d_{\rm t}=(5.5\pm 0.2)\times 10^{13}\,\mathrm{atoms/cm^{2}}$. The developed techniques can be directly applied to antiproton machines and allow for the determination of the spin-dependent $\bar{p}p$ cross sections via spin filtering.

Color screening, absorption and $σ_{tot}^{pp}$ at LHC

We show that a growth of the proton-proton total cross section with energy can be entirely attributed to the purely perturbative mechanism. The infrared regularization at rather short distances, $R_c\simeq 0.3$ fm, allows to extend the BFKL technique from deep inelastic to hadron-hadron scattering. With the account of the absorption corrections our results are in agreement with the LHC data on $σ_{tot}^{pp}$.

Drell-Yan lepton pair production at high energies in the Parton Reggeization Approach

According to extensive theoretical studies of the high energy limit of QCD, inelastic interactions are dominated by the multi-Regge final states. The appropriate gauge-invariant objects, which simultaneously incorporate the transverse momentum degrees of freedom, are Reggeized gluons, quarks and antiquarks. In the present communication we extend parton Reggeization approach to Drell-Yan production of massive lepton pairs. The basic ingredient is a process of Reggeized quark-antiquark annihilation, which is described by the Reggeon-Reggeon-photon effective vertex. We calculate transverse-momentum and invariant-mass distributions of Drell-Yan lepton pairs measured at the CERN SPS, FNAL Tevatron and CERN LHC in the different ranges of energy and rapidity. We focus on angular distributions of Drell-Yan leptons in different kinematical ranges. The obtained results are compared with the existing data and a good agreement is found. The predictions for future experiments for Drell-Yan lepton pair production at the CERN LHC have been made.

Beauty, charm and $F_L$ at HERA: new data vs. early predictions

One of the well known effects of the asymptotic freedom is splitting of the leading-$\log$ BFKL pomeron into a series of isolated poles in complex angular momentum plane. Following our earlier works we explore the phenomenological consequences of the emerging BFKL-Regge factorized expansion for the small-$x$ charm ($F_2^c$) and beauty ($F_{2}^{b}$) structure functions of the proton. As we found earlier, the color dipole approach to the BFKL dynamics predicts uniquely decoupling of subleading hard BFKL exchanges from $F_2^c$ at moderately large $Q^{2}$. We predicted precocious BFKL asymptotics of $F_2^c(x,Q^2)$ with intercept of the rightmost BFKL pole $α_{\Pom}(0)-1=Δ_{\Pom}\approx 0.4$. High-energy open beauty photo- and electro-production probes the vacuum exchange at much smaller distances and detects significant corrections to the BFKL asymptotics coming from the subleading vacuum poles. In view of the accumulation of the experimental data on small-$x$ $F_{2}^{c}$ and $F_{2}^{b}$ we extended our early predictions to the kinematical domain covered by new HERA measurements. Our structure functions obtained in 1999 agree well with the determination of both $F_2^c$ and $F_2^b$ by the H1 published in 2006 but contradict to very recent (2008, preliminary) H1 results on $F_2^b$. We present also comparison of our early predictions for the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ with recent H1 data (2008) taken at very low Bjorken $x$. We comment on the electromagnetic corrections to the Okun-Pomeranchuk theorem.

Breaking of k_\perp-factorization for Single Jet Production off Nuclei

The linear k_\perp-factorization is part and parcel of the pQCD description of high energy hard processes off free nucleons. In the case of heavy nuclear targets the very concept of nuclear parton density becomes ill-defined as exemplified by the recent derivation [2] of nonlinear nuclear k_\perp-factorization for forward dijet production in DIS off nuclei. Here we report a derivation of the related breaking of k_\perp-factorization for single-jet processes. We present a general formalism and apply it to several cases of practical interest: open charm and quark and gluon jet production in the central to beam fragmentation region of γ^*p,γ^*A, pp and pA collisions. We show how the pattern of k_\perp-factorization breaking and the nature and number of exchanged nuclear pomerons do change within the phase space of produced quark and gluon jets. As an application of the nonlinear k_\perp-factorization we discuss the Cronin effect. Our results are also applicable to the p_\perp-dependence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for, and nuclear quenching of, jets produced in the proton hemisphere of pA collisions.

Nonlinear k_\perp-factorization for Quark-Gluon Dijet Production off Nuclei

The breaking of conventional linear k_\perp-factorization for hard processes in a nuclear environment is by now well established. Here we report a detailed derivation of the nonlinear k_\perp-factorization relations for the production of quark-gluon dijets. This process is of direct relevance to dijets in the proton hemisphere of proton-nucleus collisions at energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The major technical problem is a consistent description of the non-Abelian intranuclear evolution of multiparton systems of color dipoles. Following the technique developed in our early work [ N.N. Nikolaev, W. Schäfer, B.G. Zakharov and V.R. Zoller, J. Exp. Theor. Phys.\ {\bf 97} (2003) 441], we reduce the description of the intranuclear evolution of the $qgg\bar{q}$ state to the system of three coupled-channel equations in the space of color singlet 4-parton states $\ket{3\bar{3}}, \ket{6\bar{6}}$ and $\ket{15\bar{15}}$ (and their large-N_c generalizations). At large number of colors N_c, the eigenstate $(\ket{6\bar{6}}-\ket{15\bar{15}})/\sqrt{2}$ decouples from the initial state $\ket{3\bar{3}}$. The resulting nuclear distortions of the dijet spectrum exhibit much similarity to those found earlier for forward dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS). Still there are certain distinctions regarding the contribution from color-triplet $qg$ final states and from coherent diffraction excitation of dijets. To the large-N_c approximation, we identify four universality classes of nonlinear k_\perp-factorization for hard dijet production.

Multiple exchanges in lepton pair production in high--energy heavy ion collisions

The recent analysis of nuclear distortions in DIS off nuclei revealed a breaking of the conventional hard factorization for multijet observable. The related pQCD analysis of distortion effects for jet production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is as yet lacking. As a testing ground for such an analysis we consider the Abelian problem of higher order Coulomb distortions of the spectrum of lepton pairs produced in peripheral nuclear collisions. We report an explicit calculation of the contribution to the lepton pair production in the collision of two photons from one nucleus with two photons from the other nucleus, $2γ+ 2γ\to \m{l}^+\m{l}^-$. The dependence of this amplitude on the transverse momenta has a highly nontrivial form the origin of which can be traced to the mismatch of the conservation of the Sudakov components for the momentum of leptons in the Coulomb field of the oppositely moving nuclei. The result suggests that the familiar eikonalization of Coulomb distortions breaks down for the oppositely moving Coulomb centers, which is bad news from the point of view of extensions to the pQCD treatment of jet production in nuclear collisions. On the other hand, we notice that the amplitude for the $2γ+ 2γ\to \m{l}^+\m{l}^-$ process has a logarithmic enhancement for the lepton pairs with large transverse momentum, which is absent for $nγ+ mγ\to \m{l}^+\m{l}^-$ processes with $m,n > 2$. We discuss the general structure of multiple exchanges and show how to deal with higher order terms which cannot be eikonalized.

Possibility of the odderon discovery via observation of charge asymmetry in the diffractive pi+pi- production at HERA

The interference between the Pomeron and possible odderon mechanisms of diffractive pi+pi- photoproduction results in charge asymmetry of the produced pions. The observation of charge asymmetry of pions at moderate M_{pi+pi-} will be an undoubted signal of odderon existence. To make numeral estimates more definite, we limit ourselves by the region M_{pi+pi-} = 1.1 -- 1.5 GeV, where in the odderon mechanism of dipion production, the production via single f_2(1270) resonance is expected to be dominant. We find a very statistically significant effect of the odderon induced charge asymmetry even with very modest estimates for the f_2 photoproduction cross section (without referring to any particular model of the odderon).

Ultraperipheral photoproduction of vector mesons in the nuclear Coulomb field and the size of neutral vector mesons

We point out a significance of ultraperipheral photoproduction of vector mesons in the Coulomb field of nuclei as a means of measuring the radius of the neutral vector meson. This new contribution to the production amplitude is very small compared to the conventional diffractive amplitude, but because of large impact parameters inherent to the ultraperipheral Coulomb mechanism its impact on the diffraction slope is substantial. We predict appreciable and strongly energy dependent increase of the diffraction slope towards very small momentum transfer. The magnitude of the effect is proportional to the mean radius squared of the vector meson and is within the reach of high precision photoproduction experiments, which gives a unique experimental handle on the size of vector mesons.

Multiple lepton pair production in relativistic ion collisions

We apply the Sudakov technique to description of the multiple production of lepton pairs in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. For heavy ions with $Z_1α\sim Z_2α\ll 1$ one needs a careful treatment of the multiple Coulomb exchange between colliding ions and screening effects, whereas interaction of real or virtual lepton pairs with colliding ions can be neglected. We demonstrate that while the inclusive spectra are modified by multiple Coulomb exchange between the colliding ions, the Coulomb corrections to the momentum integrated multiplicity distributions do vanish. After transformation to the impact parameter representation the probability of $n$ lepton pair production is shown to obey the Poisson distribution. The relevant cross section is obtained.

preprint2002arXiv

The lepton pair production in heavy ion collisions in perturbation theory

We derive the first terms in the amplitude of lepton pair production in the Coulomb fields of two relativistic heavy ions. Using the Sudakov technique, which very simplify the calculations in momentum space for the processes at high energies, we get the compact analytical expressions for differential cross section of the process under consideration in the lowest order in fine structure constant (Born approximation) valid for any momentum transfer and in a wide kinematics region for produced particles. Exploiting the same technique we consider the next terms of perturbation series (up to fourth order in fine structure constant) and investigate their energy dependence and limiting cases. It has been shown that taking in account all relevant terms in corresponding order one obtains the expressions which are gauge invariant and finite. We estimate the contribution of the Coulomb corrections to the total cross section and discuss the cancellations of the different terms which holds in the total cross section.

Predicitions for high-energy real and virtual photon-photon scattering from color dipole BFKL-Regge factorization

High-energy virtual photon-virtual photon scattering can be viewed as interaction of small size color dipoles from the beam and target photons, which makes $γ^{*}γ^{*}, γ^{*}γ$ scattering at high energies (LEP, LEP200 & NLC) an indispensable probe of short distance properties of the QCD pomeron exchange. Based on the color dipole representation, we investigate consequences for the $γ^{*}γ^{*},γ^{*}γ$ scattering of the incorporation of asymptotic freedom into the BFKL equation which makes the QCD pomeron a series of isolated poles in the angular momentum plane. The emerging color dipole BFKL-Regge factorization allows us to relate in a model-independent way the contributions of each BFKL pole to $γ^{*}γ^{*},γ^{*} γ$ scattering and DIS off protons. Numerical predictions based on our early works on color dipole BFKL phenomenology of DIS on protons are in a good agreement with the experimental data on the photon structure function $F_{2γ}$ and most recent data on the $γ^*γ^*$ cross section $σ^{γ^*γ^*}(Y)$ from OPAL and L3 experiments at LEP200. We discuss the role of non-perturbative dynamics and predict pronounced effect of the Regge-factorization breaking due to large unfactorizable non-perturbative corrections to the perturbative vacuum exchange. We comment on the salient features of the BFKL-Regge expansion for $γ^{*}γ^{*},γ^{*}γ$ scattering including the issue of decoupling of subleading BFKL poles and the soft plus rightmost hard BFKL pole dominance .

Anatomy of the differential gluon structure function of the proton from the experimental data on F_2p

The use of the differential gluon structure function of the proton ${\cal F}(x,Q^{2})$ introduced by Fadin, Kuraev and Lipatov in 1975 is called upon in many applications of small-x QCD. We report here the first determination of ${\cal F}(x,Q^{2})$ from the experimental data on the small-x proton structure function $F_{2p}(x,Q^{2})$. We give convenient parameterizations for ${\cal F}(x,Q^{2})$ based partly on the available DGLAP evolution fits (GRV, CTEQ & MRS) to parton distribution functions and on realistic extrapolations into soft region. We discuss an impact of soft gluons on various observables. The x-dependence of the so-determined ${\cal F}(x,Q^{2})$ varies strongly with Q^2 and does not exhibit simple Regge properties. None the less the hard-to-soft diffusion is found to give rise to a viable approximation of the proton structure function F_{2p}(x,Q^2) by the soft and hard Regge components with intercepts Δ_{soft}=0 and Δ_{hard}\sim 0.4.

Do the E866 Drell Yan data change our picture of the chiral structure of the nucleon ?

We revisit the evaluation of the pionic mechanism of the $\bar{u}-\bar{d}$-asymmetry in the proton structure function. Our analysis is based on the extended AGK unitarity relation between contributions of different mechanisms to the inclusive particle production and the total photoabsorption cross-section (i.e. the proton structure function). We reanalyze the role of isovector reggeons in inclusive production of nucleons and Delta isobars in hadronic reactions. We find rather large contribution of reggeon-exchange induced production of Delta isobars. This leaves much less room for the pion-exchange induced mechanism of $Δ$ production and provides a constraint on the $πN Δ$ form factor. The production of leading pions in proton-proton collisions at ISR puts additional constraints on the $πNN$ vertex form factors. An extension of the AGK-rules to reggeon exchange suggests a negligible contribution to the proton structure function from DIS off the exchanged $ρ,a_2$ reggeons. All these constraints are used then to estimate the pion content of the nucleon and allow to calculate parameter-free the $x$-dependence of $\bar d - \bar u$. We discuss the violation of the Gottfried Sum Rule and $\bar d$-$\bar u$ asymmetry and compare to the one obtained from the E866 experiment at Fermilab. We estimate the background to the pion structure function being determined by the ZEUS and H1 collaborations at HERA from leading neutron experiments.

The Running BFKL: Resolution of Caldwell's Puzzle

The HERA data on the proton structure function, $F_2(x,Q^2)$, at very small $x$ and $Q^2$ show the dramatic departure of the logarithmic slope, $\partial F_2/\partial\log Q^2$, from theoretical predictions based on the DGLAP evolution. We show that the running BFKL approach provides the quantitative explanation for the observed $x$ and/or $Q^2$ -dependence of $\partial F_2/\partial\log Q^2$.

Anomalies in Diffractive Electroproduction of 2S Radially Excited Light Vector Mesons at HERA

We present the color dipole phenomenology of diffractive photo- and electroproduction $γ^{*} N\to V(V') N$ of vector mesons ($V(1S) = ϕ^0, ω^0, ρ^0, J/Ψ, Υ$) and their radial excitations ($V'(2S) = ϕ', ω', ρ', Ψ', Υ'$). The main emphasis is related to light vector mesons. We discuss how the energy dependence of the color dipole cross section in conjuction with the node of the radial wave function of the $2S$ states can lead to an anomalous $Q^2$ and energy dependence of diffractive production of $V'(2S)$ vector mesons. The color dipole model predictions for $V(1S)$ light vector meson production are compared with the experimental data from the EMC, NMC, ZEUS and H1 collaborations.

Glauber theory of initial- and final-state interactions in (p,2p) scattering

We develop the Glauber theory description of initial- and final-state interactions (IFSI) in quasielastic A(p,2p) scattering. We study the IFSI-distortion effects both for the inclusive and exclusive conditions. In inclusive reaction the important new effect is an interaction between the two sets of the trajectories which enter the calculation of IFSI-distorted one-body density matrix for inclusive (p,2p) scattering and are connected with incoherent elastic rescatterings of the initial and final protons on spectator nucleons. We demonstrate that IFSI-distortions of the missing momentum distribution are large over the whole range of missing momentum both for inclusive and exclusive reactions and affect in a crucial way the interpretation of the BNL data on (p,2p) scattering. Our numerical results show that in the region of missing momentum $p_{m}\lsim 100-150$ MeV/c the incoherent IFSI increase nuclear transparency by 5-10\%. The incoherent IFSI become dominant at $p_{m}\gsim 200$ MeV/c.

How to measure the pion structure function at HERA

We suggest a method of determination of the pion structure function down to x \simeq 10^{-4} based on semi-exclusive deep inelastic scattering off protons. The idea is to exploit the nonperturbative πN$ and πΔFock components of the nucleon, which contribute significantly to deep inelastic scattering and dominate the fragmentation of protons into fast neutrons and deltas. The intrinsic factorization properties of the semi-exclusive cross section give a good test for the validity of this approach.

Nonvanishing tensor polarization of sea quarks in polarized deuterons

We propose two new sources of a substantial tensor polarization of sea partons in the deuteron: the diffractive nuclear shadowing which depends on the alignment of nucleons in the polarized deuteron and the nuclear excess of pions in the deuteron which is sensitive to the spin state of the deuteron. The corresponding tensor structure function $b_{2}(x,Q^{2})$ rises towards small x and we predict an about one per cent tensor asymmetry $A_{2}(x,Q^{2})=b_{2}(x,Q^{2})/ F_{2d}(x,Q^{2})$ which by almost two orders in magnitude exceeds the effect evaluated earlier in the impulse approximation. The both mechanisms for tensor structure function break the sum rule $\int dx b_{1}(x,Q^{2})=0$ suggested by Close and Kumano. We comment on the impact of tensor polarization on the determination of the vector spin structure function $g_{1d}(x,Q^{2})$ for the deuteron.

Do final state interactions obscure short range correlation effects in quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering?

Are short range correlations in the ground state of the target nucleus (initial state correlations ISC)observable inexperiments on quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering at large missing momentum $p_{m}$? Will the missing momentum spectrum observed at CEBAF be overwhelmed by final state interactions of the struck proton? Taking the $^{4}He$ nucleus with a realistic model wave function for a testing ground, we present a full calculation of the missing momentum distribution in inclusive $^{4}He(e,e'p)$ scattering. We find a complex interplay and strong quantum-mechanical interference of FSI and ISC contributions to scattering at large $p_{m}$, with drastic change of the interference pattern from the (anti)parallel to transverse kinematics. We show that in all the kinematical conditions, for missing momenta $p_{m}\gsim 1$\,fm$^{-1}$, quasielastic scattering is dominated by FSI effects and the sensitivity to details of the nuclear ground state is lost. The origin of the FSI dominance is well understood and can be traced back to the anisotropic behaviour of FSI which is long ranged in the longitudinal direction and short ranged in the transverse direction in the opposite to the short ranged ground state correlations.

Quadrupole deformation of deuterons and final state interaction in $^2 \vec H (e,e'p)$ scattering on tensor polarized deuterons at CEBAF energies

The strength of final state interaction (FSI) between struck proton and spectator neutron in $^2\vec{H}(e,e'p)$ scattering depends on the alignment of the deuteron. We study the resulting FSI effects in the tensor analyzing power in detail and find substantial FSI effects starting at still low missing momentum $p_m \gsim 0.9 fm^{-1}$. At larger $p_m \gsim 1.5 fm^{-1}$, FSI completely dominates both missing momentum distribution and tensor analyzing power. We find that to a large extent FSI masks the sensitivity of the tensor analyzing power to models of the deuteron wave function. For the transversely polarized deuterons the FSI induced forward-backward asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution is shown to have a node at precisely the same value of $p_m$ as the PWIA missing momentum distribution. The position of this node is not affected by FSI and can be a tool to distinguish experimentally between different models for the deuteron wave function.

The longitudinal asymmetry of the $(e,e'p)$ missing momentum distribution as a signal of color transparency

We use multiple scattering theory to evaluate the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{z}$, of the missing momentum distribution in quasielstic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering, which is expected to be affected by color transparency. The novel features of our analysis are a consistent treatment of the structure of the ejectile state formed after absorption of the virtual photon by the struck proton and a careful evaluation of the background asymmetry induced by the nonvanishing real part of the proton-nucleon scattering amplitude. We find that the absolute magnitude of $A_{z}$ is dominated by this background at the $Q^{2}$'s attainable at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. However, the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the asymmetry is sensitive to the onset of color transparency, whose observation in high statistics experiments appears to be feasible, particularly using light targets such as $^{12}C$ or $^{16}O$.

BFKL evolution and universal structure function at very small $x$

The Balitskii-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) and the Gribov-Lipatov- Dokshitzer-Altarelli-Parisi (GLDAP) evolution equations for the diffractive deep inelastic scattering at ${1\over x} \gg 1$ are shown to have a common solution in the weak coupling limit: $F_{2}(x,Q^{2})\propto [α_{S}(Q^{2})]^{-γ} \left({1\over x}\right)^{Δ_{\Pom}}$. The exponent $γ$ and the pomeron intercept $Δ_{\Pom}$ are related by $γΔ_{\Pom}={4\over 3}$ for the $N_{f}=3$ active flavors. The existence of this solution implies that there is no real clash between the BFKL and GLDAP descriptions at very small $x$. We present derivation of this solution in the framework of our generalized BFKL equation for the dipole cross section, discuss conditions for the onset of the universal scaling violations and analyse the pattern of transition from the conventional Double-Leading-Logarithm approximation for the GLDAP evolution to the BFKL evolution at large ${1\over x}$.

Deep inelastic scattering at HERA and the BFKL pomeron

We present a BFKL phenomenology of structure functions in the framework of the generalized BFKL equation for the dipole cross section proposed by us recently. We show that the HERA measurements of excitation of charm at $Q^{2} \lsim $10 GeV$^{2}$ allow determination of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron. A comparison with the experimental data suggests a large contribution from the nonperturbative cross section for colour dipoles of large size $r$.

How to measure the intercept of the BFKL pomeron at HERA

Determination of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron is one of the pressing issues in the high energy physics. Earlier we have shown that, at the dipole size $r=r_Δ=(0.1-0.2)$f, the dipole cross section $σ(x,r)$ which is a solution of the generalized BFKL equation, exhibits a precocious asymptotic behavior $σ(x,r)\propto \left({1\over x}\right)^{Δ_{\Pom}}$. In this paper we discuss how measuring $F_{L}(x,Q^{2})$ and $\partial F_{T}(x,Q^{2})/\partial \log Q^{2}$ at $Q^{2}= (10-40)$GeV$^{2}$ and $Q^{2}=(2-10)$GeV$^{2}$, respectively, one can probe $σ(x,r_Δ)$ and directly determine the intercept $Δ_{\Pom}$ of the BFKL pomeron in the HERA experiments.

Quantum coherence in heavy-flavor production on nuclei

We describe a light-cone wave function formalism for hadroproduction of heavy-flavors via gluon-gluon fusion. The developed approach is well suited to address coherence effects in heavy-quark production on nuclei at small $x_{2} \lsim 0.1\cdot A^{-1/3}$. Nuclear attenuation in hadroproduction of heavy-flavors is found to be similar to shadowing effects for heavy-flavor structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei. Nevertheless, remaining differences in the theoretical formulation of both processes imply corrections to factorization theorems.

Theoretical Interpretation of the NE18 Experiment on Nuclear Transparency in A(e,e'p) Scattering

The spectral function, measured in $A(e,e'p)$ reactions, is distorted by the final-state interaction of the struck proton with the residual nucleus. This causes a broadening of the observed transverse-momentum distribution which is large even in the $d(e,e'p)$ reaction. We discuss the effects of this $p_{\perp}$-broadening on the nuclear transparency measured in the recent NE18 experiment. Within conventional Glauber theory we can describe the measurements. Transparency effects are thus small in agreement with our earlier predictions.

Colour transparency: a novel test of QCD in nuclear interactions

Colour transparency is a cute and indispensable property of QCD as the gauge theory of strong interaction. CT tests of QCD consist of production of the perturbative small-sized hadronic state and measuring the strngth of its non-perturbative diffraction nteraction in a nuclear matter. The energy depenednce of the final- state interaction in a nuclear matter probes a dynamical evolution from the perturbative small-sized state to the full-sized nonperturbative hadron. QCD observables of CT experiments correspond to a novel mechanism of scanning of hadronic wave functions from the large nonperturbative to the small perturbative size. In these lectures, which are addressed to experimentalists and theorists, I discuss the principle ideas of CT physics and the physics potential of the hadron and electron facilities in the > 10 GeV energy range. The special effort was made to present the material in the pedagigical and self-consistent way, with an emphasis on the underlying rich quantum-mechanical interference phenomena.

Decisive test of color transparency in exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons

The exclusive production of vector mesons in deep inelastic scattering is a hard scattering process with the well controlled size of quark configurations which dominate the production amplitude. This allows an unambiguous prediction of color transparency effects in the coherent and incoherent production of vector mesons on nuclei. We demonstrate how the very mechanism of color transparency leads to a belated onset of color transparency effects as a function of $Q^{2}$. We conclude that the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the exclusive $ρ^{0}$-meson production on nuclei and nucleons observed in the Fermilab E665 experiment gives a solid evidence for the onset of color transparency. We propose the scaling relation between the $ρ^{0}$ and the $J/Ψ$ production, which further tests the mechanism of color transparency in exclusive (virtual) photoproduction.
