Induced low-energy effective action in the 6D, N=(1,0) hypermultiplet theory on the vector multiplet background

We consider the six dimensional N=(1,0) hypermultiplet model coupled to an external field of the Abelian vector multiplet in harmonic superspace approach. Using the superfield proper-time technique we find the divergent part of the effective action and derive the complete finite induced low-energy superfield effective action. This effective action depends on external field and contains in bosonic sector all the powers of the constant Maxwell field strength. The obtained result can be treated as the 6D, N=(1,0) supersymmetric Heisenberg-Euler type effective action.

Construction of 6D supersymmetric field models in N=(1,0) harmonic superspace

We consider the six dimensional hypermultiplet, vector and tensor multiplet models in (1,0) harmonic superspace and discuss the corresponding superfield actions. The actions for free (2,0) tensor multiplet and for interacting vector/tensor multiplet system are constructed. Using the superfield formulation of the hypermultiplet coupled to the vector/tensor system we develop an approach to calculation of the one-loop superfield effective action and find its divergent structure.

Effective actions in ${\cal N}$=1, D5 supersymmetric gauge theories: harmonic superspace approach

We consider the off-shell formulation of the 5D, $ {\cal N}$=1 super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons theories in harmonic superspace. Using such a formulation we develop a manifestly supersymmetric and gauge invariant approach to constructing the one-loop effective action both in super Yang-Mills and super Chern-Simons models. On the base of this approach we compute the leading low-energy quantum contribution to the effective action on the Abelian vector multiplet background. This contribution corresponds to $F^4$ invariant which is given in 5D superfield form.

Leading low-energy effective action in the 6D hypermultiplet theory on a vector/tensor background

We consider a six dimensional (1,0) hypermultiplet model coupled to an external field of vector/tensor system and study the structure of the low-energy effective action of this model. Manifestly a (1,0) supersymmetric procedure of computing the effective action is developed in the framework of the superfield proper-time technique. The leading low-energy contribution to the effective action is calculated.

Manifestly N=2 supersymmetric regularization for N=2 supersymmetric field theories

We formulate the higher covariant derivative regularization for N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in N=2 harmonic superspace. This regularization is constructed by adding the N=2 supersymmetric higher derivative term to the classical action and inserting the N=2 supersymmetric Pauli--Villars determinants into the generating functional for removing one-loop divergencies. Unlike all other regularization schemes in N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theory, this regularization preserves by construction the manifest N=2 supersymmetry at all steps of calculating loop corrections to the effective action. Together with N=2 supersymmetric background field method this regularization allows to calculate quantum corrections without breaking the manifest gauge symmetry and N=2 supersymmetry. Thus, we justify the assumption about existence of a regularization preserving N=2 supersymmetry, which is a key element of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem. As a result, we give the prove of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem which does not require any additional assumptions.

Background field formalism and construction of effective action for N=2, d=3 supersymmetric gauge theories

We review the background field method for three-dimensional Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons models in N=2 superspace. Superfield proper time (heat kernel) techniques are developed and exact expressions of heat kernels for constant backgrounds are presented. The background field method and heat kernel techniques are applied for evaluating the low-energy effective actions in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons models as well as in N=4 and N=8 SYM theories.

Effective action of three-dimensional extended supersymmetric matter on gauge superfield background

We study the low-energy effective actions for gauge superfields induced by quantum N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric matter fields in three-dimensional Minkowski space. Analyzing the superconformal invariants in the N=2 superspace we propose a general form of the N=2 gauge invariant and superconformal effective action. The leading terms in this action are fixed by the symmetry up to the coefficients while the higher order terms with respect to the Maxwell field strength are found up to one arbitrary function of quasi-primary N=2 superfields constructed from the superfield strength and its covariant spinor derivatives. Then we find this function and the coefficients by direct quantum computations in the N=2 superspace. The effective action of N=4 gauge multiplet is obtained by generalizing the N=2 effective action.

Filippov-Nambu $n$-algebras relevant to physics

Gauge symmetry based on Lie algebra has a rather long history and it successfully describes electromagnetism, weak and strong interactions in the nature. Recently the Filippov-Nambu 3-algebras have been in the focus of interest since they appear as gauge symmetries of new superconformal Chern-Simons non-Abelian theories in 2 + 1 dimensions with the maximum allowed number of N = 8 linear supersymmetries. These theories explore the low energy dynamics of the microscopic degrees of freedom of coincident M2 branes and constitute the boundary conformal field theories of the bulk AdS4 / S7 exact 11-dimensional supergravity backgrounds of supermembranes. These mysterious new symmetries, the Filippov-Nambu 3-algebras represent the implementation of non-associative algebras of coordinates of charged tensionless strings, the boundaries of open M2 branes in antisymmetric field magnetic backgrounds of M5 branes in the M2 -M5 system. A crucial input into this construction came from the study of the M2-M5 system in the Basu- Harvey's work where an equation describing the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad- Sommerfeld (BPS) bound state of multiple M2-branes ending on an M5 was formulated. The Filippov-Nambu 3-algebras are either operator or matrix representation of the classical Nambu symmetries of world volume preserving diffeomorphisms of M2 branes. Indeed at the classical level the supermembrane Lagrangian, in the covariant formulation, has the world volume preserving diffeomorphisms symmetry SDiff(M2+1). The Filippov-Nambu 3-algebras presumably correspond to the quantization of the rigid motions in this infinite dimensional group, which describe the low energy excitation spectrum of the M2 branes. It emphasizes the Filippov-Nambu n-algebras as the mathematical framework for describing symmetry properties of classical and quantum mechanical systems.

Low-energy effective actions in three-dimensional extended SYM theories

We develop the background field method in the N=2, d=3 superspace for studying effective actions in three-dimensional SYM models which live in the world-volume of various 2-branes. In particular, the low-energy effective action for the N=2 quiver gauge theory with four chiral superfields in the bifundamental representation is studied. This gauge theory describes the D2 brane probing the conifold singularity. Surprisingly, the leading terms in this effective action reproduce the classical action of the Abelian ABJM theory confirming the fact that the M2 brane can be considered as the effective theory for the D2 brane at strong coupling. Apart from this N=2 quiver gauge theory we study the low-energy effective action in pure N=2, N=4 and N=8 SYM theories with gauge group SU(N) spontaneously broken down to an Abelian subgroup. In particular, for the N=4 SYM we find similar correspondence between the leading terms in its effective action and the classical action of the Abelian Gaiotto-Witten theory.

ABJM models in N=3 harmonic superspace

We construct the classical action of the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) model in the N=3, d=3 harmonic superspace. In such a formulation three out of six supersymmetries are realized off shell while the other three mix the superfields and close on shell. The superfield action involves two hypermultiplet superfields in the bifundamental representation of the gauge group and two Chern-Simons gauge superfields corresponding to the left and right gauge groups. The N=3 superconformal invariance allows only for a minimal gauge interaction of the hypermultiplets. Amazingly, the correct sextic scalar potential of ABJM emerges after the elimination of auxiliary fields. Besides the original U(N)xU(N) ABJM model, we also construct N=3 superfield formulations of some generalizations. For the SU(2)xSU(2) case we give a simple superfield proof of its enhanced N=8 supersymmetry and SO(8) R-symmetry.
