Contrastive-SDXL: Annotation-Preserving Night-Time Augmentation for Pedestrian Detection

Night-time pedestrian detection remains challenging because labelled night-time data are limited and large illumination differences make daytime-only trained detectors unreliable. Latent diffusion models (LDMs) provide a powerful basis for image-to-image translation and cross-domain augmentation, but their effectiveness in safety-critical perception depends on whether detector-relevant objects and local semantic structure are preserved when translating between source and target domains. In this work, we present Contrastive-SDXL, a day-to-night augmentation framework for night-time pedestrian detection built on SDXL-Turbo and fine-tuned using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). To preserve semantic correspondence between daytime inputs and translated night-time images, we introduce a patch-wise semantic contrastive loss guided by a pretrained DINOv2 encoder rather than generator encoder features. Multi-level DINOv2 self-attention maps enforce both local and global semantic consistency, while an object consistency loss explicitly encourages pedestrian preservation. Contrastive-SDXL produces realistic night-time images, achieving a Frechet Inception Distance (FID) of 22.5. Detectors trained with our synthetic images obtain a 6-7% reduction in miss rate compared with a daytime-only baseline, approaching the performance of detectors trained on real night-time data. Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Long-Range Autonomous Valet Parking for Smart Cities

In this paper, to reduce the congestion rate at the city center and increase the quality of experience (QoE) of each user, the framework of long-range autonomous valet parking (LAVP) is presented, where an Autonomous Vehicle (AV) is deployed in the city, which can pick up, drop off users at their required spots, and then drive to the car park out of city center autonomously. In this framework, we aim to minimize the overall distance of the AV, while guarantee all users are served, i.e., picking up, and dropping off users at their required spots through optimizing the path planning of the AV and number of serving time slots. To this end, we first propose a learning based algorithm, which is named as Double-Layer Ant Colony Optimization (DL-ACO) algorithm to solve the above problem in an iterative way. Then, to make the real-time decision, while consider the dynamic environment (i.e., the AV may pick up and drop off users from different locations), we further present a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm, which is known as deep Q network (DQN). The experimental results show that the DL-ACO and DQN-based algorithms both achieve the considerable performance.

Second-harmonic generation in plasmonic waveguides with nonlocal response and electron spill-out

Plasmonic waveguides provide an integrated platform to develop efficient nanoscale ultrafast photonic devices. Theoretical models that describe nonlinear optical phenomena in plasmonic waveguides, usually, only incorporate bulk nonlinearities, while nonlinearities that arise from metallic constituents remained unexplored. In this work, we present a method that enables a generalized treatment of the nonlinearities present in plasmonic waveguides and use it to calculate second-harmonic generation from free electrons through a hydrodynamic nonlocal description. As a general application of our method we also consider nonlinearities arising from the quantum hydrodynamic theory with electron spill-out. Our results may find applicability in design and analysis of integrated photonic platforms for nonlinear optics incorporating wide variety of nonlinear materials such as heavily doped semiconductors for mid-infrared applications.
