Fully Resonant Magneto-elastic Spin-wave Excitation by Surface Acoustic Waves under Conservation of Energy and Linear Momentum

We report on the resonant excitation of spin waves in micro-structured magnetic thin films by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The spin waves as well as the acoustic waves are studied by micro-focused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. Besides the excitation of the ferromagnetic resonance, a process which does not fulfill momentum conservation, also the excitation of finite-wavelength spin waves can be observed at low magnetic fields. Using micromagnetic simulations, we verify that during this excitation both energy and linear momentum are conserved and fully transferred from the SAW to the spin wave.

Parametric Excitation and Instabilities of Spin Waves driven by Surface Acoustic Waves

The parametric excitation of spin waves by coherent surface acoustic waves is demonstrated experimentally in metallic magnetic thin film structures. The involved magnon modes are analyzed with micro-focused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and complementary micromagnetic simulations combined with analytical modelling are used to determine the origin of the spin-wave instabilities. Depending on the experimental conditions, we observe spin-wave instabilities originating from different phonon-magnon and magnon-magnon scattering processes. Our results demonstrate that an efficient excitation of high amplitude, strongly nonlinear magnons in metallic ferromagnets is possible by surface acoustic waves, which opens novel ways to create micro-scaled nonlinear magnonic systems for logic and data processing that can profit from the high excitation efficiency of phonons using piezoelectricity.

Parametric generation of spin waves in nano-scaled magnonic conduits

The research feld of magnonics proposes a low-energy wave-logic computation technology based on spin waves to complement the established CMOS technology and provide a basis for emerging unconventional computation architectures. However, magnetic damping is a limiting factor for all-magnonic logic circuits and multi-device networks, ultimately rendering mechanisms to effciently manipulate and amplify spin waves a necessity. In this regard, parallel pumping is a versatile tool since it allows to selectively generate and amplify spin waves. While extensively studied in microscopic systems, nano-scaled systems are lacking investigation to assess the feasibility and potential future use of parallel pumping in magnonics. Here, we investigate a longitudinally magnetized 100 nm-wide magnonic nano-conduit using space and time-resolved micro-focused Brillouin-light-scattering spectroscopy. Employing parallel pumping to generate spin waves, we observe that the non-resonant excitation of dipolar spin waves is favored over the resonant excitation of short wavelength exchange spin waves. In addition, we utilize this technique to access the effective spin-wave relaxation time of an individual nano-conduit, observing a large relaxation time up to (115.0 +- 7.6) ns. Despite the significant decrease of the pumping effciency in the investigated nano-conduit, a reasonably small threshold is found rendering parallel pumping feasible on the nano-scale.

Tuning the dynamics of magnetic droplet solitons using dipolar interactions

Magnetic droplets are dissipative magnetodynamical solitons that can form under current driven nanocontacts in magnetic layers with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Here, we extend the original droplet theory by studying the impact of the dipolar interactions on the dynamics of droplet solitons. By varying the thickness of the free layer of a spin torque nano-oscillator, we systematically tune the internal field of the free layer to investigate the dynamics of droplet solitons. Our numerical results show that increasing the free layer thickness increases the droplet threshold current, decreases the droplet frequency and diameter, enlarges the current hysteresis and also modifies the structure of the droplet. The Oersted field of the current breaks the phase coherency and deteriorates the stability of the droplet in free layers with larger thicknesses. Moreover, our findings show a simple relation to determine the impact of the free layer thickness on the droplet nucleation boundaries. Our study presents the missing brick on the physics behind magnetic droplet solitons, and further illustrates that magnetic droplets in thinner layers possess more promising characteristics for spintronic applications and enable devices with higher speed of operation.

Controlling the propagation of dipole-exchange spin waves using local inhomogeneity of the anisotropy

Spin waves are promising candidates to carry, transport, and process information. Controlling the propagation characteristics of spin waves in magnetic materials is an essential ingredient for designing spin-wave based computing architectures. Here, we study the influence of surface inhomogeneities on the spin-wave signals transmitted through thin films. We use micromagnetic simulations to study the spin-wave dynamics in an in-plane magnetized yttrium iron garnet thin film with a thickness in the nanometre range in the presence of surface defects in the form of locally introduced uniaxial anisotropies. These defects are used to demonstrate that the Backward Volume Magnetostatic Spin Waves (BVMSW) are more responsive to backscattering in comparison to Magnetostatic Surface Spin Waves (MSSWs). For this particular defect type, the reason for this behavior can be quantitatively related to the difference in the magnon band structures for the two types of spin waves. To demonstrate this, we develop a quasi-analytical theory for the scattering process. It shows an excellent agreement with the micromagnetic simulations, sheds light on the backscattering processes and provides a new way to analyze the spin-wave transmission rates in the presence of surface inhomogeneities in sufficiently thin films, for which the role of exchange energy in the spin-wave dynamics is significant. Our study paves the way to designing magnonic logic devices for data processing which rely on a designed control of the spin-wave transmission.

Propagating magnetic droplet solitons as moveable nanoscale spin-wave sources with tunable direction of emission

Magnetic droplets are strongly nonlinear and localized spin-wave solitons that can be formed in current-driven nanocontacts. Here, we propose a simple way to launch droplets in an inhomogeneous nanoscopic waveguide. We use the drift motion of a droplet and show that in a system with broken translational symmetry, the droplet acquires a linear momentum and propagates. We find that the droplet velocity can be tuned via the strength of the break in symmetry and the size of the nanocontact. In addition, we demonstrate that the launched droplet can propagate up to several micrometers in a realistic system with reasonable damping. Finally, we demonstrate how an annihilating droplet delivers its momentum to a highly nonreciprocal spin-wave burst with a tunable wave vector with nanometer wavelengths. Such a propagating droplet can be used as a moveable spin-wave source in nanoscale magnonic networks. The presented method enables full control of the spin-wave emission direction, which can largely extend the freedom to design integrated magnonic circuits with a single spin-wave source.

Slow-wave based magnonic diode

Spin waves, the collective excitations of the magnetic order parameter, and magnons, the associated quasiparticles, are envisioned as possible data carriers in future wave-based computing architectures. On the road towards spin-wave computing, the development of a diode-like device capable of transmitting spin waves in only one direction, thus allowing controlled signal routing, is an essential step. Here, we report on the design and experimental realization of a microstructured magnonic diode in a ferromagnetic bilayer system. Effective unidirectional propagation of spin waves is achieved by taking advantage of nonreciprocities produced by dynamic dipolar interactions in transversally magnetized media, which lack symmetry about their horizontal midplane. More specifically, dipolar-induced nonreciprocities are used to engineer the spin-wave dispersion relation of the bilayer system so that the group velocity is reduced to very low values for one direction of propagation, and not for the other, thus producing unidirectional slow spin waves. Brillouin light scattering and propagating spin-wave spectroscopy are used to demonstrate the diode-like behavior of the device, the composition of which was previously optimized through micromagnetic simulations. simulations.

Evolving Horava Cosmological Horizons

Several sets of radially propagating null congruence generators are exploited in order to form 3-dimensional marginally trapped surfaces, referred to as black hole and cosmological apparent horizons in a Horava universe. Based on this method, we deal with the characteristics of the 2-dimensional space-like spheres of symmetry and the peculiarities of having trapping horizons. Moreover, we apply this method in standard expanding and contracting FLRW cosmological models of a Horava universe to investigate the conditions under which the extra parameters of the theory may lead to trapped/anti-trapped surfaces both in the future and in the past. We also include the cases of negative time, referred to as the finite past, and discuss the formation of anti-trapped surfaces inside the cosmological apparent horizons.

Focusing of world-lines in Weyl gravity

We study the evolution of time-like congruences in the vacuum solutions of Weyl conformal theory of gravity. Using the Raycaudhuri equation, we show that for positive values of the coeffcient of the linear term in the solution and in the absence of the cosmological constant, the incoming rays converge. The evolution of the congruence for negative values is investigated for different values of the parameters. The behavior of the congruence under conformal transformations is also studied.

Gravitational Collapse in Repulsive $R+μ^4/R$ Gravity

In this paper we work out collapsing conditions for a spherical star in the weak field limit of the $R+μ^4/R$ gravity and discuss the importance of the parameter $μ$ to generate different criteria in the theory. Such criteria are proved to be resulting in a variety of different fates for the evolution of the outer shells of stars. Furthermore, we investigate the special case of violating the first junction condition and point out corresponding contradictions to the normal cases. These results show that the consistency of the $R+μ^4/R$ theory of gravity with the common astrophysical predictions relies highly on the adoption of the parameter $μ$ and satisfaction/violation of the first junction condition. For those anomalous results, further observational attempts are mandatory.

Massive Gravitons on Bohmian Congruences

Taking a quantum corrected form of Raychaudhuri equation in a geometric background described by a Lorentz-violating massive theory of gravity, we go through investigating a time-like congruence of massive gravitons affected by a Bohmian quantum potential. We find some definite conditions upon which these gravitons are confined to diverging Bohmian trajectories. The respective behaviour of those quantum potentials are also derived and discussed. Additionally, and through a relativistic quantum treatment of a typical wave function, we demonstrate schematic conditions on the associated frequency to the gravitons, in order to satisfy the necessity of divergence.

Surface configuration in $R + μ^4/R$ gravity

We investigate the conditions on the additional constant $μ$ in the so-called $R+μ^4/R$ theory of gravity, due to existence of different kinds of space-like surfaces in both weak field and strong field limits, and their possible correspondence to black hole event horizons. Adopting a Schwarzschild limit, we probe the behaviour of $μ$ in different contexts of radial and radial-rotational congruence of null geodesics. We show that these cases serve as correspondents to black hole horizons in some peculiar cases of study.

The Raychaudhuri equation for spinning test particles

We obtain generalized Raychaudhuri equations for spinning test particles corresponding to congruences of particle's world-lines, momentum, and spin. These are physical examples of the Raychaudhuri equation for a non-normalized vector, unit time-like vector, and unit space-like vector. We compute and compare the evolution of expansion-like parameters associated with these congruences for spinning particles confined in the equatorial plane of the Kerr space-time.

Photon gas with hyperbolic dispersion relations

We investigate the density of states for a photon gas confined in a nonmagnetic metamaterial medium in which some components of the permittivity tensor are negative. We study the effect of the resulting hyperbolic dispersion relations on the black body spectral density. We show that for both of the possible wavevector space topologies, the spectral density vanishes at a certain frequency. We obtain the partition function and derive some thermodynamical quantities of the system. To leading order, the results resemble those of a one- or two-dimensional photon gas with an enhanced density of states.

Gravitational Waves in Ghost Free Bimetric Gravity

We obtain a set of exact gravitational wave solutions for the ghost free bimetric theory of gravity. With a flat reference metric, the theory admits the vacuum Brinkmann plane wave solution for suitable choices of the coefficients of different terms in the interaction potential. An exact gravitational wave solution corresponding to a massive scalar mode is also admitted for arbitrary choice of the coefficients with the reference metric being proportional to the spacetime metric. The proportionality factor and the speed of the wave are calculated in terms of the parameters of the theory. We also show that a F(R) extension of the theory admits similar solutions but in general is plagued with ghost instabilities.

Impulsive gravitational waves of massless particles in extended theories of gravity

We investigate the vacuum pp-wave and Aichelburg-Sexl-type solutions in f(R) and the modified Gauss-Bonnet theories of gravity with both minimal and nonminimal couplings between matter and geometry. In each case, we obtain the necessary condition for the theory to admit the solution and examine it for several specific models. We show that the wave profiles are the same or proportional to the general relativistic one.

Exact plane gravitational waves in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley model of massive gravity

We show that the nonlinear massive gravity model of de Rham, Gabadadze, and Tolley admits exact plane gravitational wave solution whose waveform obeys the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation. The solution is valid for arbitrary values of the coefficients of the cubic and quartic terms. In the massless limit the solution reduces to the Aichelburg-Sexl metric in general relativity.

General relativistic spinning fluids with a modified projection tensor

An energy-momentum tensor for general relativistic spinning fluids compatible with Tulczyjew-type supplementary condition is derived from the variation of a general Lagrangian with unspecified explicit form. This tensor is the sum of a term containing the Belinfante-Rosenfeld tensor and a modified perfect-fluid energy-momentum tensor in which the four-velocity is replaced by a unit four-vector in the direction of fluid momentum. The equations of motion are obtained and it is shown that they admit a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time as a solution.

Motion of pole-dipole and quadrupole particles in non-minimally coupled theories of gravity

We study theories of gravity with non-minimal coupling between polarized media with pole-dipole and quadrupole moments and an arbitrary function of the space-time curvature scalar $R$ and the squares of the Ricci and Riemann curvature tensors. We obtain the general form of the equation of motion and show that an induced quadrupole moment emerges as a result of the curvature tensor dependence of the function coupled to the matter. We derive the explicit forms of the equations of motion in the particular cases of coupling to a function of the curvature scalar alone, coupling to an arbitrary function of the square of the Riemann curvature tensor, and coupling to an arbitrary function of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We show that in these cases the extra force resulting from the non-minimal coupling can be expressed in terms of the induced moments.

Stability of circular orbits of spinning particles in Schwarzschild-like space-times

Circular orbits of spinning test particles and their stability in Schwarzschild-like backgrounds are investigated. For these space-times the equations of motion admit solutions representing circular orbits with particles spins being constant and normal to the plane of orbits. For the de Sitter background the orbits are always stable with particle velocity and momentum being co-linear along them. The world-line deviation equations for particles of the same spin-to-mass ratios are solved and the resulting deviation vectors are used to study the stability of orbits. It is shown that the orbits are stable against radial perturbations. The general criterion for stability against normal perturbations is obtained. Explicit calculations are performed in the case of the Schwarzschild space-time leading to the conclusion that the orbits are stable.

Spinning particles in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time

After considering the reference case of the motion of spinning test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild space-time, we generalize the results to the case of the motion of a spinning particle in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time. Specifically, we obtain the loci of turning points of the particle in this plane. We show that the cosmological constant affect the particle motion when the particle distance from the black hole is of the order of the inverse square root of the cosmological constant.
