Pseudodifferential operators on Mixed-Norm $α$-modulation spaces

Mixed-norm $α$-modulation spaces were introduced recently by Cleanthous and Georgiadis [Trans.\ Amer.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 373 (2020), no. 5, 3323-3356]. The mixed-norm spaces $M^{s,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $α\in [0,1]$, form a family of smoothness spaces that contain the mixed-norm Besov spaces as special cases. In this paper we prove that a pseudodifferential operator $σ(x,D)$ with symbol in the Hörmander class $S^b_ρ$ extends to a bounded operator $σ(x,D)\colon M^{s,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n) \rightarrow M^{s-b,α}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ provided $0<α\leq ρ\leq 1$, $\vec{p}\in (0,\infty)^n$, and $0<q<\infty$. The result extends the known result that pseudodifferential operators with symbol in the class $S^b_{1}$ maps the mixed-norm Besov space $B^s_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into $B^{s-b}_{\vec{p},q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Stable decomposition of homogeneous Mixed-norm Triebel-Lizorkin spaces

We construct smooth localized orthonormal bases compatible with homogeneous mixed-norm Triebel-Lizorkin spaces in an anisotropic setting on $\bR^d$. The construction is based on tensor products of so-called univariate brushlet functions that are constructed using local trigonometric bases in the frequency domain. It is shown that the associated decomposition system form unconditional bases for the homogeneous mixed-norm Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. In the second part of the paper we study nonlinear $m$-term nonlinear approximation with the constructed basis in the mixed-norm setting, where the behaviour, in general, for $d\geq 2$, is shown to be fundamentally different from the unmixed case. However, Jackson and Bernstein inequalities for $m$-term approximation can still be derived.

Approximation spaces of deep neural networks

We study the expressivity of deep neural networks. Measuring a network's complexity by its number of connections or by its number of neurons, we consider the class of functions for which the error of best approximation with networks of a given complexity decays at a certain rate when increasing the complexity budget. Using results from classical approximation theory, we show that this class can be endowed with a (quasi)-norm that makes it a linear function space, called approximation space. We establish that allowing the networks to have certain types of "skip connections" does not change the resulting approximation spaces. We also discuss the role of the network's nonlinearity (also known as activation function) on the resulting spaces, as well as the role of depth. For the popular ReLU nonlinearity and its powers, we relate the newly constructed spaces to classical Besov spaces. The established embeddings highlight that some functions of very low Besov smoothness can nevertheless be well approximated by neural networks, if these networks are sufficiently deep.

On a discrete transform of homogeneous decomposition spaces

We introduce almost diagonal matrices in the setting of (anisotropic) discrete homogeneous Triebel-Lizorkin type spaces and homogeneous modulation spaces, and it is shown that the class of almost diagonal matrices is closed under matrix multiplication. We then connect the results to the continuous setting and show that the "change of frame" matrix for a pair of time-frequency frames, with suitable decay properties, is almost diagonal. As an application of this result, we consider a construction of compactly supported frame expansions for homogeneous decomposition spaces of Triebel-Lizorkin type and for the associated modulation spaces.

Determinantal point process models on the sphere

We consider determinantal point processes on the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb S^d$. These are finite point processes exhibiting repulsiveness and with moment properties determined by a certain determinant whose entries are specified by a so-called kernel which we assume is a complex covariance function defined on $\mathbb S^d\times\mathbb S^d$. We review the appealing properties of such processes, including their specific moment properties, density expressions and simulation procedures. Particularly, we characterize and construct isotropic DPPs models on $\mathbb{S}^d$, where it becomes essential to specify the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a spectral representation for the kernel, and we figure out how repulsive isotropic DPPs can be. Moreover, we discuss the shortcomings of adapting existing models for isotropic covariance functions and consider strategies for developing new models, including a useful spectral approach.

Generalized Sampling in Julia

Generalized sampling is a numerically stable framework for obtaining reconstructions of signals in different bases and frames from their samples. In this paper, we will introduce a carefully documented toolbox for performing generalized sampling in Julia. Julia is a new language for technical computing with focus on performance, which is ideally suited to handle the large size problems often encountered in generalized sampling. The toolbox provides specialized solutions for the setup of Fourier bases and wavelets. The performance of the toolbox is compared to existing implementations of generalized sampling in MATLAB.

On Schauder Bases Properties of Multiply Generated Gabor Systems

Let $A$ be a finite subset of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and $p,q\in\mathbb{N}$. We characterize the Schauder basis properties in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ of the Gabor system $$G(1,p/q,A)=\{e^{2πi m x}g(x-np/q) : m,n\in \mathbb{Z}, g\in A\},$$ with a specific ordering on $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}\times A$. The characterization is given in terms of a Muckenhoupt matrix $A_2$ condition on an associated Zibulski-Zeevi type matrix.

Projection operators on matrix weighted $L^p$ and a simple sufficient Muckenhoupt condition

Boundedness for a class of projection operators, which includes the coordinate projections, on matrix weighted $L^p$-spaces is completely characterised in terms of simple scalar conditions. Using the projection result, sufficient conditions, which are straightforward to verify, are obtained that ensure that a given matrix weight is contained in the Muckenhoupt matrix $A_p$ class. Applications to singular integral operators with product kernels are considered.

The restricted isometry property meets nonlinear approximation with redundant frames

It is now well known that sparse or compressible vectors can be stably recovered from their low-dimensional projection, provided the projection matrix satisfies a Restricted Isometry Property (RIP). We establish new implications of the RIP with respect to nonlinear approximation in a Hilbert space with a redundant frame. The main ingredients of our approach are: a) Jackson and Bernstein inequalities, associated to the characterization of certain approximation spaces with interpolation spaces; b) a new proof that for overcomplete frames which satisfy a Bernstein inequality, these interpolation spaces are nothing but the collection of vectors admitting a representation in the dictionary with compressible coefficients; c) the proof that the RIP implies Bernstein inequalities. As a result, we obtain that in most overcomplete random Gaussian dictionaries with fixed aspect ratio, just as in any orthonormal basis, the error of best $m$-term approximation of a vector decays at a certain rate if, and only if, the vector admits a compressible expansion in the dictionary. Yet, for mildly overcomplete dictionaries with a one-dimensional kernel, we give examples where the Bernstein inequality holds, but the same inequality fails for even the smallest perturbation of the dictionary.
