Large-time behavior of composite waves of viscous shocks for the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations

We study the large-time behavior of the 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes flow perturbed from Riemann data generating a composition of two shock waves with small amplitudes. We prove that the perturbed Navier-Stokes flow converges, uniformly in space, towards a composition of two viscous shock waves as time goes to infinity, up to dynamical shifts. Especially, the strengths of the two waves can be chosen independently. This is the first result for the convergence to a composite wave of two viscous shocks with independently small amplitudes.

$L^2$-type contraction for shocks of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex flux

We study the $L^2$-type contraction property of large perturbations around shock waves of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. The contraction holds up to a shift, and it is measured by a weighted related entropy, for which we choose an appropriate entropy associated with the strictly convex flux. In particular, we handle shocks with small amplitude. This result improves the recent article [18] of the author and Vasseur on $L^2$-contraction property of shocks to scalar viscous conservation laws with a special flux, that is almost the Burgers flux.

Inviscid limit to the shock waves for the fractal Burgers equation

We show the vanishing viscosity limit to entropy shocks for the fractal Burgers equation in one space dimension. More precisely, we quantify the rate of convergence of the inviscid limit in $L^2$ for large initial perturbations around the entropy shock on any bounded time interval. This is the first result on the inviscid limit to entropy shock for the fractal Burgers equation with the quantified convergence, for large initial perturbations.

Global smooth solutions for 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with a large class of degenerate viscosities

We prove the global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions to the one-dimensional barotropic Navier-Stokes system with degenerate viscosity $μ(ρ)=ρ^α$. We establish that the smooth solutions have possibly two different far-fields, and the initial density remains positive globally in time, for the initial data satisfying the same conditions. In addition, our result works for any $α>0$, i.e., for a large class of degenerate viscosities. In particular, our models include the viscous shallow water equations. This extends the result of Constantin-Drivas-Nguyen-Pasqualotto \cite[Theorem 1.5]{CDNP} (on the case of periodic domain) to the case where smooth solutions connect possibly two different limits at the infinity on the whole space.

$L^2$-contraction of large planar shock waves for multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws

We consider a $L^2$-contraction of large viscous shock waves for the multi-dimensional scalar viscous conservation laws, up to a suitable shift. The shift function depends on the time and space variables. It solves a parabolic equation with inhomogeneous coefficients reflecting the perturbation. We consider a suitably small $L^2$-perturbation around a viscous planar shock wave of arbitrarily large strength. However, we do not impose any condition on the anti-derivative variables of the perturbation around shock profile. More precisely, it is proved that if the initial perturbation around the viscous shock wave is suitably small in the $L^2$ norm, then the $L^2$-contraction holds true for the viscous shock wave up to a shift function which may depend on the temporal and spatial variables. Moreover, as the time $t$ tends to infinity, the $L^2$-contraction holds true up to a time-dependent shift function. In particular, if we choose some special initial perturbation, then we can prove a $L^2$ convergence of the solutions towards the associated shock profile up to a time-dependent shift.

Dynamics of a spatially homogeneous Vicsek model for oriented particles on the plane

We consider a spatially homogeneous Kolmogorov-Vicsek model in two dimensions, which describes the alignment dynamics of self-driven stochastic particles that move on the plane at a constant speed, under space-homogeneity. In \cite{F-K-M}, Alessio Figalli and the authors have shown the existence of global weak solutions for this two-dimensional model. However, no time-asymptotic behavior has been obtained for the two-dimensional case, due to the failure of the celebrated Bakery and Emery condition for the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. We prove exponential convergence (with quantitative rate) of the weak solutions towards a Fisher-von Mises distribution, using a new condition for the logarithmic Sobolev inequality.

Existence and stability of planar shocks of viscous scalar conservation laws with space-periodic flux

The goal of this paper is to prove the existence and stability of shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws with space periodic flux, in the multi-dimensional case. Such a result had been proved by the first author in one space dimension, but the extension to a multi-dimensional setting makes the existence proof non-trivial. We construct approximate solutions by restricting the size of the domain and then passing to the limit as the size of the domain goes to infinity. One of the key steps is a " normalization " procedure, which ensures that the limit objects obtained by the approximation scheme are indeed shocks. The proofs rely on elliptic PDE theory rather than ODE arguments as in the 1d case. Once the existence of shocks is proved, their stability follows from classical arguments based on the theory of dynamical systems.

Global weak solutions for Kolmogorov-Vicsek type equations with orientational interactions

We study the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to kinetic Kolmogorov-Vicsek models that can be considered a non-local non-linear Fokker-Planck type equation describing the dynamics of individuals with orientational interactions. This model is derived from the discrete Couzin-Vicsek algorithm as mean-field limit \cite{B-C-C,D-M}, which governs the interactions of stochastic agents moving with a velocity of constant magnitude, i.e. the the corresponding velocity space for these type of Kolmogorov-Vicsek models are the unit sphere. Our analysis for $L^p$ estimates and compactness properties take advantage of the orientational interaction property meaning that the velocity space is a compact manifold.

$L^2$-contraction for shock waves of scalar viscous conservation laws

We consider the $L^2$-contraction up to a shift for viscous shocks of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. In the case of a flux which is a small perturbation of the quadratic burgers flux, we show that any viscous shock induces a contraction in $L^2$, up to a shift. That is, the $L^2$ norm of the difference of any solution of the viscous conservation law, with an appropriate shift of the shock wave, does not increase in time. If, in addition, the difference between the initial value of the solution and the shock wave is also bounded in $L^1$, the $L^2$ norm of the difference converges at the optimal rate $t^{-1/4}$. Both results do not involve any smallness condition on the initial value, nor on the size of the shock. In this context of small perturbations of the quadratic Burgers flux, the result improves the Choi and Vasseur's result in [7]. However, we show that the $L^2$-contraction up to a shift does not hold for every convex flux. We construct a smooth strictly convex flux, for which the $L^2$-contraction does not hold any more even along any Lipschitz shift.

Criteria on contractions for entropic discontinuities of systems of conservation laws

We study the contraction properties (up to shift) for admissible Rankine-Hugoniot discontinuities of $n\times n$ systems of conservation laws endowed with a convex entropy. We first generalize the criterion developed in [47], using the spatially inhomogeneous pseudo-distance introduced in [50]. Our generalized criterion guarantees the contraction property for extremal shocks of a large class of systems, including the Euler system. Moreover, we introduce necessary conditions for contraction, specifically targeted for intermediate shocks. As an application, we show that intermediate shocks of the two-dimensional isentropic magnetohydrodynamics do not verify any of our contraction properties. We also investigate the contraction properties, for contact discontinuities of the Euler system, for a certain range of contraction weights. All results do not involve any smallness condition on the initial perturbation, nor on the size of the shock.

Global well-posedness of the spatially homogeneous Kolmogorov-Vicsek model as a gradient flow

We consider the so-called spatially homogenous Kolmogorov-Vicsek model, a non-linear Fokker-Planck equation of self-driven stochastic particles with orientation interaction under the space-homogeneity. We prove the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the equation. We also show that weak solutions exponentially converge to a steady state, which has the form of the Fisher-von Mises distribution.

Non-contraction of intermediate admissible discontinuities for 3-D planar isentropic magnetohydrodynamics

We investigate non-contraction of large perturbations around intermediate entropic shock waves and contact discontinuities for the three-dimensional planar compressible isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). To do that, we take advantage of criteria developed by Kang and Vasseur in [6], and non-contraction property is measured by pseudo distance based on relative entropy.

Asymptotic analysis of Vlasov-type equations under strong local alignment regime

We consider the hydrodynamic limit of a collisionless and non-diffusive kinetic equation under strong local alignment regime. The local alignment is first considered by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa in [24], as a singular limit of an alignment force proposed by Motsch and Tadmor in [32]. As the local alignment strongly dominate, a weak solution to the kinetic equation under consideration converges to the local equilibrium, which has the form of mono-kinetic distribution. We use the relative entropy method and weak compactness to rigorously justify the weak convergence of our kinetic equation to the pressureless Euler system.
