The tracking detector of the FASER experiment

FASER is a new experiment designed to search for new light weakly-interacting long-lived particles (LLPs) and study high-energy neutrino interactions in the very forward region of the LHC collisions at CERN. The experimental apparatus is situated 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction-point aligned with the beam collision axis. The FASER detector includes four identical tracker stations constructed from silicon microstrip detectors. Three of the tracker stations form a tracking spectrometer, and enable FASER to detect the decay products of LLPs decaying inside the apparatus, whereas the fourth station is used for the neutrino analysis. The spectrometer has been installed in the LHC complex since March 2021, while the fourth station is not yet installed. FASER will start physics data taking when the LHC resumes operation in early 2022. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of the tracking spectrometer, including the associated components such as the mechanics, readout electronics, power supplies and cooling system.

The trigger and data acquisition system of the FASER experiment

The FASER experiment is a new small and inexpensive experiment that is placed 480 meters downstream of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. FASER is designed to capture decays of new long-lived particles, produced outside of the ATLAS detector acceptance. These rare particles can decay in the FASER detector together with about 500-1000 Hz of other particles originating from the ATLAS interaction point. A very high efficiency trigger and data acquisition system is required to ensure that the physics events of interest will be recorded. This paper describes the trigger and data acquisition system of the FASER experiment and presents performance results of the system acquired during initial commissioning.

Search for the SUSY Electroweak Sector at $ep$ Colliders

The sensitivity of future electron-proton colliders, the LHeC and FCC-eh, to weakly-produced supersymmetric particles is evaluated in this article. Supersymmetric scenarios where charginos ($\tildeχ_1^{\pm}$) and neutralinos ($\tildeχ_1^{0}$ and $\tildeχ_2^{0}$) are nearly degenerate in mass are considered. Two sets of models, which differ in the mass of sleptons ($\tilde{\ell}$), are studied. Under the hypothesis that slepton masses are at the multi-TeV scale (``decoupled'' scenario), the production processes for charginos and neutralinos at $ep$ colliders, $p\, e^- \to j\, e^-\, \tildeχ \tildeχ$ with $\tildeχ=\tildeχ_1^{0}$, $\tildeχ_1^{\pm}$ or $\tildeχ_2^{0}$, are considered. For the models where slepton masses are above but close to $\tildeχ_1^{\pm}$, $\tildeχ_2^{0}$ masses (``compressed'' scenario), contributions from the processes $p\, e^- \to j\, \tildeχ\, \tilde{e}_L^-$ and $j\, \tildeχ\, \tildeν$ followed by the decays $\tilde{e}_L^- \to \tildeχ_{1,2}^{0} + e^-$ and $\tildeν \to \tildeχ_1^+ + e^-$ are also taken into account. These scenarios are analysed with realistic detector performance, using multivariate techniques. Effects of systematic uncertainties and electron beam polarization dependence are also discussed. The reach is found to be complementary to the one obtained at $pp$ colliders, in particular for the compressed-slepton scenario.

Searching for Dark Photons at the LHeC and FCC-he

Extensions of the Standard Model (SM) gauge group with a new $U(1)_X$ predict an additional gauge boson. Through kinetic mixing with the SM photons featured by a coupling $ε$, the ensuing so-called dark photons $γ'$, which acquire mass as a result of the breaking of the gauge group $U(1)_X$, can interact with the SM field content. These massive dark photons can therefore decay to pairs of leptons, hadrons, or quarks, depending on their mass $m_{γ'}$. In this work, we discuss searches for dark photons in the mass range around and below one GeV at the LHeC and FCC-he colliders. The signal is given by the displaced decays of the long-lived dark photon into two charged fermions. We discuss the impact of conceivable irreducible (SM and machine-related) backgrounds and different signal efficiencies. Our estimates show that the LHeC and FCC-he can test a domain that is complementary to other present and planned experiments.

Improved squark and gluino mass limits from searches for supersymmetry at hadron colliders

Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron and discuss the impact of the improved cross section predictions on the squark and gluino mass limits.
