Effect of white LED DC-bias on modulation speed for visible light communications

The light emitting diode (LED) nonlinearities distortion induced degradation in the performance of visible light communication (VLC) systems can be controlled by optimizing the DC bias point of the LED. In this paper, we theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate the effect of white LED DC bias on nonlinear modulation bandwidth and dynamic range of the VLC system. The linear dynamic range is enhanced by using series-connected LED chips, and the modulation bandwidth is extended to 40 MHz by post-equalization without using a blue filter. The experimental results well match the theoretical model of LED nonlinear modulation characteristics. The results show that the modulation bandwidth increases and saturates with an increase in LED DC bias current due to nonlinear effect of carrier lifetime and junction capacitance. The optimized DC-bias current that corresponds to the minimum BER increases with the increase of data rate. A 60-Mbps NRZ transmission can be achieved with BER threshold of 10-3 by properly adjusting LED DC bias point.

A Novel Statistical Channel Model for Turbulence-Induced Fading in Free-Space Optical Systems

In this paper, we propose a new probability distribution function which accurately describes turbulence-induced fading under a wide range of turbulence conditions. The proposed model, termed Double Generalized Gamma (Double GG), is based on a doubly stochastic theory of scintillation and developed via the product of two Generalized Gamma (GG) distributions. The proposed Double GG distribution generalizes many existing turbulence channel models and provides an excellent fit to the published plane and spherical waves simulation data. Using this new statistical channel model, we derive closed form expressions for the outage probability and the average bit error as well as corresponding asymptotic expressions of free-space optical communication systems over turbulence channels. We demonstrate that our derived expressions cover many existing results in the literature earlier reported for Gamma-Gamma, Double-Weibull and K channels as special cases.

Error Performance Analysis of FSO Links with Equal Gain Diversity Receivers over Double Generalized Gamma Fading Channels

Free space optical (FSO) communication has been receiving increasing attention in recent years with its ability to achieve ultra-high data rates over unlicensed optical spectrum. A major performance limiting factor in FSO systems is atmospheric turbulence which severely degrades the system performance. To address this issue, multiple transmit and/or receive apertures can be employed, and the performance can be improved via diversity gain. In this paper, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of FSO systems with transmit diversity or receive diversity with equal gain combining (EGC) over atmospheric turbulence channels described by the Double Generalized Gamma (Double GG) distribution. The Double GG distribution, recently proposed, generalizes many existing turbulence models in a closed-form expression and covers all turbulence conditions. Since the distribution function of a sum of Double GG random variables (RVs) appears in BER expression, we first derive a closed-form upper bound for the distribution of the sum of Double GG distributed RVs. A novel union upper bound for the average BER as well as corresponding asymptotic expression is then derived and evaluated in terms of Meijer's G-functions.

Impact of Multipath Reflections on the Performance of Indoor Visible Light Positioning Systems

Visible light communication (VLC) using light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) has been a popular research area recently. VLC can provide a practical solution for indoor positioning. In this paper, the impact of multipath reflections on indoor VLC positioning is investigated, considering a complex indoor environment with walls, floor and ceiling. For the proposed positioning system, an LED bulb is the transmitter and a photo-diode (PD) is the receiver to detect received signal strength (RSS) information. Combined deterministic and modified Monte Carlo (CDMMC) method is applied to compute the impulse response of the optical channel. Since power attenuation is applied to calculate the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the received power from each reflection order is analyzed. Finally, the positioning errors are estimated for all the locations over the room and compared with the previous works where no reflections considered. Three calibration approaches are proposed to decrease the effect of multipath reflections.

Indoor Location Estimation with Optical-based OFDM Communications

Visible Light Communication (VLC) using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, a novel OFDM VLC system is proposed which can be utilized for both communications and indoor positioning. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those using single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart. Finally, we investigate the impact of different system parameters on the positioning accuracy of the proposed OFDM VLC system.

Indoor Positioning in High Speed OFDM Visible Light Communications

Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning accuracy of optical based OFDM techniques used in VLC systems. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those of single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. Multipath Reflections Analysis on Indoor Visible Light Positioning System

Visible light communication (VLC) has become a promising research topic in recent years, and finds its wide applications in indoor environments. Particularly, for location based services (LBS), visible light also provides a practical solution for indoor positioning. Multipath-induced dispersion is one of the major concerns for complex indoor environments. It affects not only the communication performance but also the positioning accuracy. In this paper, we investigate the impact of multipath reflections on the positioning accuracy of indoor VLC positioning systems. Combined Deterministic and Modified Monte Carlo (CDMMC) approach is applied to estimate the channel impulse response considering multipath reflections. Since the received signal strength (RSS) information is used for the positioning algorithm, the power distribution from one transmitter in a typical room configuration is first calculated. Then, the positioning accuracy in terms of root mean square error is obtained and analyzed.

On the Performance of MIMO FSO Communications over Double Generalized Gamma Fading Channels

A major performance degrading factor in free space optical communication (FSO) systems is atmospheric turbulence. Spatial diversity techniques provide a promising approach to mitigate turbulence-induced fading. In this paper, we study the error rate performance of FSO links with spatial diversity over atmospheric turbulence channels described by the Double Generalized Gamma distribution which is a new generic statistical model covering all turbulence conditions. We assume intensity modulation/direct detection with on-off keying and present the BER performance of single-input multiple-output (SIMO), multiple-input single-output (MISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) FSO systems over this new channel model.

On the Performance of Single- and Multi-carrier Modulation Schemes for Indoor Visible Light Communication Systems

In this paper, we investigate and compare the performance of single- and multi-carrier modulation schemes for indoor visible light communication (VLC). Particularly, the performances of single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE), orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and on-off keying (OOK) with minimum mean square error equalization (MMSE) are analyzed in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the indoor optical channel where nonlinearity distortion of light emitting diode (LED) transfer function is taken into account. Our results indicate that SCFDE system, in contrast to OFDM system, does not suffer from high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and can outperform OFDM and OOK systems. We further investigate the impact of LED bias point on the performance of OFDM systems and show that biasing LED with the optimum value can significantly enhance the performance of the system. Bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is also considered for OFDM and SCFDE systems to further compensate signal degradation due to inter-symbol interference (ISI) and LED nonlinearity.

Robust Timing Synchronization for AC-OFDM Based Optical Wireless Communications

Visible light communications (VLC) have recently attracted a growing interest and can be a potential solution to realize indoor wireless communication with high bandwidth capacity for RF-restricted environments such as airplanes and hospitals. Optical based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems have been proposed in the literature to combat multipath distortion and intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath signal propagation. In this paper, we present a robust timing synchronization scheme suitable for asymmetrically clipped (AC) OFDM based optical intensity modulated direct detection (IM/DD) wireless systems. Our proposed method works perfectly for ACO-OFDM, Pulse amplitude modulated discrete multitone (PAM-DMT) and discrete Hartley transform (DHT) based optical OFDM systems. In contrast to existing OFDM timing synchronization methods which are either not suitable for AC OFDM techniques due to unipolar nature of output signal or perform poorly, our proposed method is suitable for AC OFDM schemes and outperforms all other available techniques. Both numerical and experimental results confirm the accuracy of the proposed method. Our technique is also computationally efficient as it requires very few computations as compared to conventional methods in order to achieve good accuracy.
