Answering from Sure to Uncertain: Uncertainty-Aware Curriculum Learning for Video Question Answering

While significant advancements have been made in video question answering (VideoQA), the potential benefits of enhancing model generalization through tailored difficulty scheduling have been largely overlooked in existing research. This paper seeks to bridge that gap by incorporating VideoQA into a curriculum learning (CL) framework that progressively trains models from simpler to more complex data. Recognizing that conventional self-paced CL methods rely on training loss for difficulty measurement, which might not accurately reflect the intricacies of video-question pairs, we introduce the concept of uncertainty-aware CL. Here, uncertainty serves as the guiding principle for dynamically adjusting the difficulty. Furthermore, we address the challenge posed by uncertainty by presenting a probabilistic modeling approach for VideoQA. Specifically, we conceptualize VideoQA as a stochastic computation graph, where the hidden representations are treated as stochastic variables. This yields two distinct types of uncertainty: one related to the inherent uncertainty in the data and another pertaining to the model's confidence. In practice, we seamlessly integrate the VideoQA model into our framework and conduct comprehensive experiments. The findings affirm that our approach not only achieves enhanced performance but also effectively quantifies uncertainty in the context of VideoQA.

Sports-QA: A Large-Scale Video Question Answering Benchmark for Complex and Professional Sports

Reasoning over sports videos for question answering is an important task with numerous applications, such as player training and information retrieval. However, this task has not been explored due to the lack of relevant datasets and the challenging nature it presents. Most datasets for video question answering (VideoQA) focus mainly on general and coarse-grained understanding of daily-life videos, which is not applicable to sports scenarios requiring professional action understanding and fine-grained motion analysis. In this paper, we introduce the first dataset, named Sports-QA, specifically designed for the sports VideoQA task. The Sports-QA dataset includes various types of questions, such as descriptions, chronologies, causalities, and counterfactual conditions, covering multiple sports. Furthermore, to address the characteristics of the sports VideoQA task, we propose a new Auto-Focus Transformer (AFT) capable of automatically focusing on particular scales of temporal information for question answering. We conduct extensive experiments on Sports-QA, including baseline studies and the evaluation of different methods. The results demonstrate that our AFT achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Triple Spectral Fusion for Sensor-based Human Activity Recognition

The field of sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) mainly uses posture, motion and context data of Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) to identify daily activities. Despite the advancements in learning-based methods, it is challenging to perform information fusion from the temporal perspective due to the complexities in fusing heterogeneous sensor data and establishing long-term context correlations. This paper proposes a novel triple spectral fusion framework tailored for HAR. First, we develop an adaptive complementary filtering technique for noise suppression and organize each IMU's sensors into posture and motion modality nodes. Given that IMU nodes form a dynamic heterogeneous graph, we then apply adaptive filtering within the graph Fourier domain to merge both homogeneous and heterogeneous node information. Furthermore, an adaptive wavelet frequency selection approach is implemented to suppress context redundancy and shorten the length of features. This approach enhances both timestamp-based graph aggregation and the correlation of long-term contexts. Our framework uses adaptive filtering in the Fourier, graph Fourier, and wavelet domains, enabling effective multi-sensor fusion and context correlation. Utilising physics-guided deep learning to overcome data scarcity

Deep learning (DL) relies heavily on data, and the quality of data influences its performance significantly. However, obtaining high-quality, well-annotated datasets can be challenging or even impossible in many real-world applications, such as structural risk estimation and medical diagnosis. This presents a significant barrier to the practical implementation of DL in these fields. Physics-guided deep learning (PGDL) is a novel type of DL that can integrate physics laws to train neural networks. This can be applied to any systems that are controlled or governed by physics laws, such as mechanics, finance and medical applications. It has been demonstrated that, with the additional information provided by physics laws, PGDL achieves great accuracy and generalisation in the presence of data scarcity. This review provides a detailed examination of PGDL and offers a structured overview of its use in addressing data scarcity across various fields, including physics, engineering and medical applications. Moreover, the review identifies the current limitations and opportunities for PGDL in relation to data scarcity and offers a thorough discussion on the future prospects of PGDL.

Flowmind2Digital: The First Comprehensive Flowmind Recognition and Conversion Approach

Flowcharts and mind maps, collectively known as flowmind, are vital in daily activities, with hand-drawn versions facilitating real-time collaboration. However, there's a growing need to digitize them for efficient processing. Automated conversion methods are essential to overcome manual conversion challenges. Existing sketch recognition methods face limitations in practical situations, being field-specific and lacking digital conversion steps. Our paper introduces the Flowmind2digital method and hdFlowmind dataset to address these challenges. Flowmind2digital, utilizing neural networks and keypoint detection, achieves a record 87.3% accuracy on our dataset, surpassing previous methods by 11.9%. The hdFlowmind dataset, comprising 1,776 annotated flowminds across 22 scenarios, outperforms existing datasets. Additionally, our experiments emphasize the importance of simple graphics, enhancing accuracy by 9.3%.

Social Fraud Detection Review: Methods, Challenges and Analysis

Social reviews have dominated the web and become a plausible source of product information. People and businesses use such information for decision-making. Businesses also make use of social information to spread fake information using a single user, groups of users, or a bot trained to generate fraudulent content. Many studies proposed approaches based on user behaviors and review text to address the challenges of fraud detection. To provide an exhaustive literature review, social fraud detection is reviewed using a framework that considers three key components: the review itself, the user who carries out the review, and the item being reviewed. As features are extracted for the component representation, a feature-wise review is provided based on behavioral, text-based features and their combination. With this framework, a comprehensive overview of approaches is presented including supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised learning. The supervised approaches for fraud detection are introduced and categorized into two sub-categories; classical, and deep learning. The lack of labeled datasets is explained and potential solutions are suggested. To help new researchers in the area develop a better understanding, a topic analysis and an overview of future directions is provided in each step of the proposed systematic framework.

A Guide to Image and Video based Small Object Detection using Deep Learning : Case Study of Maritime Surveillance

Small object detection (SOD) in optical images and videos is a challenging problem that even state-of-the-art generic object detection methods fail to accurately localize and identify such objects. Typically, small objects appear in real-world due to large camera-object distance. Because small objects occupy only a small area in the input image (e.g., less than 10%), the information extracted from such a small area is not always rich enough to support decision making. Multidisciplinary strategies are being developed by researchers working at the interface of deep learning and computer vision to enhance the performance of SOD deep learning based methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of over 160 research papers published between 2017 and 2022 in order to survey this growing subject. This paper summarizes the existing literature and provide a taxonomy that illustrates the broad picture of current research. We investigate how to improve the performance of small object detection in maritime environments, where increasing performance is critical. By establishing a connection between generic and maritime SOD research, future directions have been identified. In addition, the popular datasets that have been used for SOD for generic and maritime applications are discussed, and also well-known evaluation metrics for the state-of-the-art methods on some of the datasets are provided.

A Novel Incremental Learning Driven Instance Segmentation Framework to Recognize Highly Cluttered Instances of the Contraband Items

Screening cluttered and occluded contraband items from baggage X-ray scans is a cumbersome task even for the expert security staff. This paper presents a novel strategy that extends a conventional encoder-decoder architecture to perform instance-aware segmentation and extract merged instances of contraband items without using any additional sub-network or an object detector. The encoder-decoder network first performs conventional semantic segmentation and retrieves cluttered baggage items. The model then incrementally evolves during training to recognize individual instances using significantly reduced training batches. To avoid catastrophic forgetting, a novel objective function minimizes the network loss in each iteration by retaining the previously acquired knowledge while learning new class representations and resolving their complex structural inter-dependencies through Bayesian inference. A thorough evaluation of our framework on two publicly available X-ray datasets shows that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods, especially within the challenging cluttered scenarios, while achieving an optimal trade-off between detection accuracy and efficiency.

Bayesian Learning for Disparity Map Refinement for Semi-Dense Active Stereo Vision

A major focus of recent developments in stereo vision has been on how to obtain accurate dense disparity maps in passive stereo vision. Active vision systems enable more accurate estimations of dense disparity compared to passive stereo. However, subpixel-accurate disparity estimation remains an open problem that has received little attention. In this paper, we propose a new learning strategy to train neural networks to estimate high-quality subpixel disparity maps for semi-dense active stereo vision. The key insight is that neural networks can double their accuracy if they are able to jointly learn how to refine the disparity map while invalidating the pixels where there is insufficient information to correct the disparity estimate. Our approach is based on Bayesian modeling where validated and invalidated pixels are defined by their stochastic properties, allowing the model to learn how to choose by itself which pixels are worth its attention. Using active stereo datasets such as Active-Passive SimStereo, we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the current state-of-the-art active stereo models. We also demonstrate that the proposed approach compares favorably with state-of-the-art passive stereo models on the Middlebury dataset.

CrossFormer: Cross Spatio-Temporal Transformer for 3D Human Pose Estimation

3D human pose estimation can be handled by encoding the geometric dependencies between the body parts and enforcing the kinematic constraints. Recently, Transformer has been adopted to encode the long-range dependencies between the joints in the spatial and temporal domains. While they had shown excellence in long-range dependencies, studies have noted the need for improving the locality of vision Transformers. In this direction, we propose a novel pose estimation Transformer featuring rich representations of body joints critical for capturing subtle changes across frames (i.e., inter-feature representation). Specifically, through two novel interaction modules; Cross-Joint Interaction and Cross-Frame Interaction, the model explicitly encodes the local and global dependencies between the body joints. The proposed architecture achieved state-of-the-art performance on two popular 3D human pose estimation datasets, Human3.6 and MPI-INF-3DHP. In particular, our proposed CrossFormer method boosts performance by 0.9% and 0.3%, compared to the closest counterpart, PoseFormer, using the detected 2D poses and ground-truth settings respectively.

Hands-on Bayesian Neural Networks -- a Tutorial for Deep Learning Users

Modern deep learning methods constitute incredibly powerful tools to tackle a myriad of challenging problems. However, since deep learning methods operate as black boxes, the uncertainty associated with their predictions is often challenging to quantify. Bayesian statistics offer a formalism to understand and quantify the uncertainty associated with deep neural network predictions. This tutorial provides an overview of the relevant literature and a complete toolset to design, implement, train, use and evaluate Bayesian Neural Networks, i.e. Stochastic Artificial Neural Networks trained using Bayesian methods.

Human Action Recognition from Various Data Modalities: A Review

Human Action Recognition (HAR) aims to understand human behavior and assign a label to each action. It has a wide range of applications, and therefore has been attracting increasing attention in the field of computer vision. Human actions can be represented using various data modalities, such as RGB, skeleton, depth, infrared, point cloud, event stream, audio, acceleration, radar, and WiFi signal, which encode different sources of useful yet distinct information and have various advantages depending on the application scenarios. Consequently, lots of existing works have attempted to investigate different types of approaches for HAR using various modalities. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of recent progress in deep learning methods for HAR based on the type of input data modality. Specifically, we review the current mainstream deep learning methods for single data modalities and multiple data modalities, including the fusion-based and the co-learning-based frameworks. We also present comparative results on several benchmark datasets for HAR, together with insightful observations and inspiring future research directions.

Learning Resolution-Adaptive Representations for Cross-Resolution Person Re-Identification

The cross-resolution person re-identification (CRReID) problem aims to match low-resolution (LR) query identity images against high resolution (HR) gallery images. It is a challenging and practical problem since the query images often suffer from resolution degradation due to the different capturing conditions from real-world cameras. To address this problem, state-of-the-art (SOTA) solutions either learn the resolution-invariant representation or adopt super-resolution (SR) module to recover the missing information from the LR query. This paper explores an alternative SR-free paradigm to directly compare HR and LR images via a dynamic metric, which is adaptive to the resolution of a query image. We realize this idea by learning resolution-adaptive representations for cross-resolution comparison. Specifically, we propose two resolution-adaptive mechanisms. The first one disentangles the resolution-specific information into different sub-vectors in the penultimate layer of the deep neural networks, and thus creates a varying-length representation. To better extract resolution-dependent information, we further propose to learn resolution-adaptive masks for intermediate residual feature blocks. A novel progressive learning strategy is proposed to train those masks properly. These two mechanisms are combined to boost the performance of CRReID. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to existing approaches and achieves SOTA performance on multiple CRReID benchmarks.

Multi-class Token Transformer for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

This paper proposes a new transformer-based framework to learn class-specific object localization maps as pseudo labels for weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS). Inspired by the fact that the attended regions of the one-class token in the standard vision transformer can be leveraged to form a class-agnostic localization map, we investigate if the transformer model can also effectively capture class-specific attention for more discriminative object localization by learning multiple class tokens within the transformer. To this end, we propose a Multi-class Token Transformer, termed as MCTformer, which uses multiple class tokens to learn interactions between the class tokens and the patch tokens. The proposed MCTformer can successfully produce class-discriminative object localization maps from class-to-patch attentions corresponding to different class tokens. We also propose to use a patch-level pairwise affinity, which is extracted from the patch-to-patch transformer attention, to further refine the localization maps. Moreover, the proposed framework is shown to fully complement the Class Activation Mapping (CAM) method, leading to remarkably superior WSSS results on the PASCAL VOC and MS COCO datasets. These results underline the importance of the class token for WSSS.

Performance of multilabel machine learning models and risk stratification schemas for predicting stroke and bleeding risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation

Appropriate antithrombotic therapy for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) requires assessment of ischemic stroke and bleeding risks. However, risk stratification schemas such as CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED have modest predictive capacity for patients with AF. Machine learning (ML) techniques may improve predictive performance and support decision-making for appropriate antithrombotic therapy. We compared the performance of multilabel ML models with the currently used risk scores for predicting outcomes in AF patients. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 9670 patients, mean age 76.9 years, 46% women, who were hospitalized with non-valvular AF, and had 1-year follow-up. The primary outcome was ischemic stroke and major bleeding admission. The secondary outcomes were all-cause death and event-free survival. The discriminant power of ML models was compared with clinical risk scores by the area under the curve (AUC). Risk stratification was assessed using the net reclassification index. Results Multilabel gradient boosting machine provided the best discriminant power for stroke, major bleeding, and death (AUC = 0.685, 0.709, and 0.765 respectively) compared to other ML models. It provided modest performance improvement for stroke compared to CHA2DS2-VASc (AUC = 0.652), but significantly improved major bleeding prediction compared to HAS-BLED (AUC = 0.522). It also had a much greater discriminant power for death compared with CHA2DS2-VASc (AUC = 0.606). Also, models identified additional risk features (such as hemoglobin level, renal function, etc.) for each outcome. Conclusions Multilabel ML models can outperform clinical risk stratification scores for predicting the risk of major bleeding and death in non-valvular AF patients.

Pseudo-Pair based Self-Similarity Learning for Unsupervised Person Re-identification

Person re-identification (re-ID) is of great importance to video surveillance systems by estimating the similarity between a pair of cross-camera person shorts. Current methods for estimating such similarity require a large number of labeled samples for supervised training. In this paper, we present a pseudo-pair based self-similarity learning approach for unsupervised person re-ID without human annotations. Unlike conventional unsupervised re-ID methods that use pseudo labels based on global clustering, we construct patch surrogate classes as initial supervision, and propose to assign pseudo labels to images through the pairwise gradient-guided similarity separation. This can cluster images in pseudo pairs, and the pseudos can be updated during training. Based on pseudo pairs, we propose to improve the generalization of similarity function via a novel self-similarity learning:it learns local discriminative features from individual images via intra-similarity, and discovers the patch correspondence across images via inter-similarity. The intra-similarity learning is based on channel attention to detect diverse local features from an image. The inter-similarity learning employs a deformable convolution with a non-local block to align patches for cross-image similarity. Experimental results on several re-ID benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-arts.

Region Aware Video Object Segmentation with Deep Motion Modeling

Current semi-supervised video object segmentation (VOS) methods usually leverage the entire features of one frame to predict object masks and update memory. This introduces significant redundant computations. To reduce redundancy, we present a Region Aware Video Object Segmentation (RAVOS) approach that predicts regions of interest (ROIs) for efficient object segmentation and memory storage. RAVOS includes a fast object motion tracker to predict their ROIs in the next frame. For efficient segmentation, object features are extracted according to the ROIs, and an object decoder is designed for object-level segmentation. For efficient memory storage, we propose motion path memory to filter out redundant context by memorizing the features within the motion path of objects between two frames. Besides RAVOS, we also propose a large-scale dataset, dubbed OVOS, to benchmark the performance of VOS models under occlusions. Evaluation on DAVIS and YouTube-VOS benchmarks and our new OVOS dataset show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance with significantly faster inference time, e.g., 86.1 J&F at 42 FPS on DAVIS and 84.4 J&F at 23 FPS on YouTube-VOS.

Scene Graph Generation: A Comprehensive Survey

Deep learning techniques have led to remarkable breakthroughs in the field of generic object detection and have spawned a lot of scene-understanding tasks in recent years. Scene graph has been the focus of research because of its powerful semantic representation and applications to scene understanding. Scene Graph Generation (SGG) refers to the task of automatically mapping an image into a semantic structural scene graph, which requires the correct labeling of detected objects and their relationships. Although this is a challenging task, the community has proposed a lot of SGG approaches and achieved good results. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of recent achievements in this field brought about by deep learning techniques. We review 138 representative works that cover different input modalities, and systematically summarize existing methods of image-based SGG from the perspective of feature extraction and fusion. We attempt to connect and systematize the existing visual relationship detection methods, to summarize, and interpret the mechanisms and the strategies of SGG in a comprehensive way. Finally, we finish this survey with deep discussions about current existing problems and future research directions. This survey will help readers to develop a better understanding of the current research status and ideas.

Biometrics Recognition Using Deep Learning: A Survey

Deep learning-based models have been very successful in achieving state-of-the-art results in many of the computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing tasks in the last few years. These models seem a natural fit for handling the ever-increasing scale of biometric recognition problems, from cellphone authentication to airport security systems. Deep learning-based models have increasingly been leveraged to improve the accuracy of different biometric recognition systems in recent years. In this work, we provide a comprehensive survey of more than 120 promising works on biometric recognition (including face, fingerprint, iris, palmprint, ear, voice, signature, and gait recognition), which deploy deep learning models, and show their strengths and potentials in different applications. For each biometric, we first introduce the available datasets that are widely used in the literature and their characteristics. We will then talk about several promising deep learning works developed for that biometric, and show their performance on popular public benchmarks. We will also discuss some of the main challenges while using these models for biometric recognition, and possible future directions to which research in this area is headed.

A Survey on Deep Learning Techniques for Stereo-based Depth Estimation

Estimating depth from RGB images is a long-standing ill-posed problem, which has been explored for decades by the computer vision, graphics, and machine learning communities. Among the existing techniques, stereo matching remains one of the most widely used in the literature due to its strong connection to the human binocular system. Traditionally, stereo-based depth estimation has been addressed through matching hand-crafted features across multiple images. Despite the extensive amount of research, these traditional techniques still suffer in the presence of highly textured areas, large uniform regions, and occlusions. Motivated by their growing success in solving various 2D and 3D vision problems, deep learning for stereo-based depth estimation has attracted growing interest from the community, with more than 150 papers published in this area between 2014 and 2019. This new generation of methods has demonstrated a significant leap in performance, enabling applications such as autonomous driving and augmented reality. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey of this new and continuously growing field of research, summarize the most commonly used pipelines, and discuss their benefits and limitations. In retrospect of what has been achieved so far, we also conjecture what the future may hold for deep learning-based stereo for depth estimation research.

Automatic Hierarchical Classification of Kelps using Deep Residual Features

Across the globe, remote image data is rapidly being collected for the assessment of benthic communities from shallow to extremely deep waters on continental slopes to the abyssal seas. Exploiting this data is presently limited by the time it takes for experts to identify organisms found in these images. With this limitation in mind, a large effort has been made globally to introduce automation and machine learning algorithms to accelerate both classification and assessment of marine benthic biota. One major issue lies with organisms that move with swell and currents, like kelps. This paper presents an automatic hierarchical classification method (local binary classification as opposed to the conventional flat classification) to classify kelps in images collected by autonomous underwater vehicles. The proposed kelp classification approach exploits learned feature representations extracted from deep residual networks. We show that these generic features outperform the traditional off-the-shelf CNN features and the conventional hand-crafted features. Experiments also demonstrate that the hierarchical classification method outperforms the traditional parallel multi-class classifications by a significant margin (90.0% vs 57.6% and 77.2% vs 59.0%) on Benthoz15 and Rottnest datasets respectively. Furthermore, we compare different hierarchical classification approaches and experimentally show that the sibling hierarchical training approach outperforms the inclusive hierarchical approach by a significant margin. We also report an application of our proposed method to study the change in kelp cover over time for annually repeated AUV surveys.

Cascaded Structure Tensor Framework for Robust Identification of Heavily Occluded Baggage Items from Multi-Vendor X-ray Scans

In the last two decades, luggage scanning has globally become one of the prime aviation security concerns. Manual screening of the baggage items is a cumbersome, subjective and inefficient process. Hence, many researchers have developed Xray imagery-based autonomous systems to address these shortcomings. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no framework, up to now, that can recognize heavily occluded and cluttered baggage items from multi-vendor X-ray scans. This paper presents a cascaded structure tensor framework which can automatically extract and recognize suspicious items irrespective of their position and orientation in the multi-vendor X-ray scans. The proposed framework is unique, as it intelligently extracts each object by iteratively picking contour based transitional information from different orientations and uses only a single feedforward convolutional neural network for the recognition. The proposed framework has been rigorously tested on publicly available GDXray and SIXray datasets containing a total of 1,067,381 X-ray scans where it significantly outperformed the state-of-the-art solutions by achieving the mean average precision score of 0.9343 and 0.9595 for extracting and recognizing suspicious items from GDXray and SIXray scans, respectively. The proposed framework has been rigorously evaluated using a total of 1,067,381 X-ray scans from publicly available GDXray and SIXray datasets where it outperformed the state-of-the-art solutions by achieving the mean average precision score of 0.9343 on GDXray and 0.9595 on SIXray for recognizing the highly cluttered and overlapping suspicious items. Furthermore, the proposed framework computationally achieves 4.76\% superior run-time performance as compared to the existing solutions based on publicly available object detectors

Deep Learning for 3D Point Clouds: A Survey

Point cloud learning has lately attracted increasing attention due to its wide applications in many areas, such as computer vision, autonomous driving, and robotics. As a dominating technique in AI, deep learning has been successfully used to solve various 2D vision problems. However, deep learning on point clouds is still in its infancy due to the unique challenges faced by the processing of point clouds with deep neural networks. Recently, deep learning on point clouds has become even thriving, with numerous methods being proposed to address different problems in this area. To stimulate future research, this paper presents a comprehensive review of recent progress in deep learning methods for point clouds. It covers three major tasks, including 3D shape classification, 3D object detection and tracking, and 3D point cloud segmentation. It also presents comparative results on several publicly available datasets, together with insightful observations and inspiring future research directions.

DFraud3- Multi-Component Fraud Detection freeof Cold-start

Fraud review detection is a hot research topic inrecent years. The Cold-start is a particularly new but significant problem referring to the failure of a detection system to recognize the authenticity of a new user. State-of-the-art solutions employ a translational knowledge graph embedding approach (TransE) to model the interaction of the components of a review system. However, these approaches suffer from the limitation of TransEin handling N-1 relations and the narrow scope of a single classification task, i.e., detecting fraudsters only. In this paper, we model a review system as a Heterogeneous InformationNetwork (HIN) which enables a unique representation to every component and performs graph inductive learning on the review data through aggregating features of nearby nodes. HIN with graph induction helps to address the camouflage issue (fraudsterswith genuine reviews) which has shown to be more severe when it is coupled with cold-start, i.e., new fraudsters with genuine first reviews. In this research, instead of focusing only on one component, detecting either fraud reviews or fraud users (fraudsters), vector representations are learnt for each component, enabling multi-component classification. In other words, we are able to detect fraud reviews, fraudsters, and fraud-targeted items, thus the name of our approach DFraud3. DFraud3 demonstrates a significant accuracy increase of 13% over the state of the art on Yelp.

Efficient Scene Text Detection with Textual Attention Tower

Scene text detection has received attention for years and achieved an impressive performance across various benchmarks. In this work, we propose an efficient and accurate approach to detect multioriented text in scene images. The proposed feature fusion mechanism allows us to use a shallower network to reduce the computational complexity. A self-attention mechanism is adopted to suppress false positive detections. Experiments on public benchmarks including ICDAR 2013, ICDAR 2015 and MSRA-TD500 show that our proposed approach can achieve better or comparable performances with fewer parameters and less computational cost.

Learning of Colors from Color Names: Distribution and Point Estimation

Color names are often made up of multiple words. As a task in natural language understanding we investigate in depth the capacity of neural networks based on sums of word embeddings (SOWE), recurrence (LSTM and GRU based RNNs) and convolution (CNN), to estimate colors from sequences of terms. We consider both point and distribution estimates of color. We argue that the latter has a particular value as there is no clear agreement between people as to what a particular color describes -- different people have a different idea of what it means to be ``very dark orange'', for example. Surprisingly, despite it's simplicity, the sum of word embeddings generally performs the best on almost all evaluations.

Multi-Kernel Fusion for RBF Neural Networks

A simple yet effective architectural design of radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) makes them amongst the most popular conventional neural networks. The current generation of radial basis function neural network is equipped with multiple kernels which provide significant performance benefits compared to the previous generation using only a single kernel. In existing multi-kernel RBF algorithms, multi-kernel is formed by the convex combination of the base/primary kernels. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-kernel RBFNN in which every base kernel has its own (local) weight. This novel flexibility in the network provides better performance such as faster convergence rate, better local minima and resilience against stucking in poor local minima. These performance gains are achieved at a competitive computational complexity compared to the contemporary multi-kernel RBF algorithms. The proposed algorithm is thoroughly analysed for performance gain using mathematical and graphical illustrations and also evaluated on three different types of problems namely: (i) pattern classification, (ii) system identification and (iii) function approximation. Empirical results clearly show the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared to the existing state-of-the-art multi-kernel approaches.

Orthogonal Deep Models As Defense Against Black-Box Attacks

Deep learning has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance for a variety of challenging computer vision tasks. On one hand, this has enabled deep visual models to pave the way for a plethora of critical applications like disease prognostics and smart surveillance. On the other, deep learning has also been found vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which calls for new techniques to defend deep models against these attacks. Among the attack algorithms, the black-box schemes are of serious practical concern since they only need publicly available knowledge of the targeted model. We carefully analyze the inherent weakness of deep models in black-box settings where the attacker may develop the attack using a model similar to the targeted model. Based on our analysis, we introduce a novel gradient regularization scheme that encourages the internal representation of a deep model to be orthogonal to another, even if the architectures of the two models are similar. Our unique constraint allows a model to concomitantly endeavour for higher accuracy while maintaining near orthogonal alignment of gradients with respect to a reference model. Detailed empirical study verifies that controlled misalignment of gradients under our orthogonality objective significantly boosts a model's robustness against transferable black-box adversarial attacks. In comparison to regular models, the orthogonal models are significantly more robust to a range of $l_p$ norm bounded perturbations. We verify the effectiveness of our technique on a variety of large-scale models.

Structure-Feature based Graph Self-adaptive Pooling

Various methods to deal with graph data have been proposed in recent years. However, most of these methods focus on graph feature aggregation rather than graph pooling. Besides, the existing top-k selection graph pooling methods have a few problems. First, to construct the pooled graph topology, current top-k selection methods evaluate the importance of the node from a single perspective only, which is simplistic and unobjective. Second, the feature information of unselected nodes is directly lost during the pooling process, which inevitably leads to a massive loss of graph feature information. To solve these problems mentioned above, we propose a novel graph self-adaptive pooling method with the following objectives: (1) to construct a reasonable pooled graph topology, structure and feature information of the graph are considered simultaneously, which provide additional veracity and objectivity in node selection; and (2) to make the pooled nodes contain sufficiently effective graph information, node feature information is aggregated before discarding the unimportant nodes; thus, the selected nodes contain information from neighbor nodes, which can enhance the use of features of the unselected nodes. Experimental results on four different datasets demonstrate that our method is effective in graph classification and outperforms state-of-the-art graph pooling methods.

Unconstrained Matching of 2D and 3D Descriptors for 6-DOF Pose Estimation

This paper proposes a novel concept to directly match feature descriptors extracted from 2D images with feature descriptors extracted from 3D point clouds. We use this concept to directly localize images in a 3D point cloud. We generate a dataset of matching 2D and 3D points and their corresponding feature descriptors, which is used to learn a Descriptor-Matcher classifier. To localize the pose of an image at test time, we extract keypoints and feature descriptors from the query image. The trained Descriptor-Matcher is then used to match the features from the image and the point cloud. The locations of the matched features are used in a robust pose estimation algorithm to predict the location and orientation of the query image. We carried out an extensive evaluation of the proposed method for indoor and outdoor scenarios and with different types of point clouds to verify the feasibility of our approach. Experimental results demonstrate that direct matching of feature descriptors from images and point clouds is not only a viable idea but can also be reliably used to estimate the 6-DOF poses of query cameras in any type of 3D point cloud in an unconstrained manner with high precision.

ResFeats: Residual Network Based Features for Image Classification

Deep residual networks have recently emerged as the state-of-the-art architecture in image segmentation and object detection. In this paper, we propose new image features (called ResFeats) extracted from the last convolutional layer of deep residual networks pre-trained on ImageNet. We propose to use ResFeats for diverse image classification tasks namely, object classification, scene classification and coral classification and show that ResFeats consistently perform better than their CNN counterparts on these classification tasks. Since the ResFeats are large feature vectors, we propose to use PCA for dimensionality reduction. Experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness of ResFeats with state-of-the-art classification accuracies on Caltech-101, Caltech-256 and MLC datasets and a significant performance improvement on MIT-67 dataset compared to the widely used CNN features.
