Counterexamples to the extendibility of positive unital norm-one maps

Arveson's extension theorem guarantees that every completely positive map defined on an operator system can be extended to a completely positive map defined on the whole C*-algebra containing it. An analogous statement where complete positivity is replaced by positivity is known to be false. A natural question is whether extendibility could still hold for positive maps satisfying stronger conditions, such as being unital and norm 1. Here we provide three counterexamples showing that positive norm-one unital maps defined on an operator subsystem of a matrix algebra cannot be extended to a positive map on the full matrix algebra. The first counterexample is an unextendible positive unital map with unit norm, the second counterexample is an unextendible positive unital isometry on a real operator space, and the third counterexample is an unextendible positive unital isometry on a complex operator space.

First-principles prediction of Structural Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of SrGaSnH

Thermoelectric materials based on earth-abundant and non-toxic elements are very useful in cost-effective and eco-friendly waste heat management systems. The constituents of SrGaSnH are earth-abundant and non-toxic, thus we have chosen SrSnGaH to study its structural stability and thermoelectric properties by using DFT, DFPT, and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Our elastic and phonons calculations show that the compound has good structural stability. The electronic structure calculation discloses that it is an indirect bandgap (0.63 eV by mBJ+SOC) semiconductor. Light band hole effective mass leads to higher electrical conductivity along x-axis than that of along z-axis. On the other side, the weak phonon scattering leads to high lattice thermal conductivity ~10.5 W m-1K-1 at 300 K. Although the power factor (PF) is very high along the x-axis (above 10 mW m-1K-2 at 300 K), such large kl dramatically reduces ZT. The maximum values of in-plane and cross-plane ZT are ~1 (n-type), 0.8 (p-type) and 0.6 (n-type), (0.2 p-type) at 700 K, respectively. The present study has revealed that this compound has strong potential in eco-friendly TE applications.

Fidelity of density operator in an operator-algebraic framework

Josza's definition of fidelity for a pair of (mixed) quantum states is studied in the context of two types of operator algebras. The first setting is mainly algebraic in that it involves unital C$^*$-algebras $A$ that possess a faithful trace functional $τ$. In this context, the role of quantum states (that is, density operators) in the classical quantum-mechanical framework is assumed by positive elements $ρ\in A$ for which $τ(ρ)=1$. The second of our two settings is more operator theoretic: by fixing a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$ on a semifinite von Neumann algebra $M$, we define and consider the fidelity of pairs of positive operators in $M$ of unit trace. The main results of this paper address monotonicity and preservation of fidelity under the action of certain trace-preserving positive linear maps of $A$ or of the predual $M_*$. Our results also yield a new proof of a theorem of Molnár on the structure of quantum channels on the trace-class operators that preserve fidelity.
