Electronic and structural properties of RbCeX2_2 (X2_2: O2_2, S2_2, SeS, Se2_2, TeSe, Te2_2)

Triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCeX2X_2 compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce3+^{3+} ions, upon varying their anion character (X2X_2= O2_2, S2_2, SeS, Se2_2, TeSe, Te2_2). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO2_2, that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO2_2. Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and \textit{ab initio} calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the J=5/2J=5/2 multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the J=5/2J=5/2 manifold, we observe one extra, local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce3+^{3+} sites.

Interwoven atypical quantum states in CeLiBi2_2

We report the discovery of CeLiBi2_2, the first example of a material in the tetragonal CeTX2TX_2 (TT = transition metal; XX = pnictogen) family wherein an alkali cation replaces the typical transition metal. Magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction measurements are consistent with a crystal-field Γ6Γ_6 ground state Kramers doublet that orders antiferromagnetically below TN=3.4T_N = 3.4 K with an incommensurate propagation wave vector k=(0,0.0724(4),0.5){\bf{k}} = (0, 0.0724(4), 0.5) that generates a nanometric modulation of the magnetic structure. The best model of the ordered state is an elliptical cycloid with Ce moments primarily residing in the abab plane. This is highly unusual, as all other Γ6Γ_6 CeTX2TX_2 members order ferromagnetically. Further, we observe an atypical hard-axis metamagnetic transition at 22 T in magnetostriction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. CeLiBi2_2 is a rare example of a highly conductive material with dominant skew scattering leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. Quantum oscillations with five frequencies arise in magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data to T=30T = 30 K and μ0H=55μ_0H = 55 T, which indicate small Fermi pockets of light carriers with effective masses as low as 0.07mem_e. Density functional theory calculations indicate that square-net Dirac-like Bi−p-p bands are responsible for these ultralight carriers. Together, our results show that CeLiBi2_2 enables multiple atypical magnetic and electronic properties in a single clean material.

Antiferromagnetism and crystalline-electric field excitations in tetragonal NaCeO2

We investigate the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and crystalline-electric field of tetragonal, I41/amdI4_1/amd, NaCeO2_2. In this compound, Ce3+^{3+} ions form a tetragonally elongated diamond lattice coupled by antiferromagnetic interactions (ΘCW=−7.69Θ_{CW} = -7.69 K) that magnetically order below TN=3.18T_N = 3.18 K. The Ce3+^{3+} J=5/2J = 5/2 crystalline-electric field-split multiplet is studied via inelastic neutron scattering to parameterize a Jeff=1/2J_{eff} = 1/2 ground state doublet comprised of states possessing mixed ∣mz⟩|m_z \rangle character. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal the onset of AA-type antiferromagnetism with μ=0.57(2)μ=0.57(2) μBμ_B moments aligned along the cc-axis. The magnetic structure is consistent with the expectations of a frustrated Heisenberg J1J_1-J2J_2 model on the elongated diamond lattice with effective exchange values J1>4J2J_1 > 4 J_2 and J1>0J_1 > 0.

Frustrated Heisenberg J1−J2J_1-J_2 model within the stretched diamond lattice of LiYbO2

We investigate the magnetic properties of LiYbO2_2, containing a three-dimensionally frustrated, diamond-like lattice via neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The stretched diamond network of Yb3+^{3+} ions in LiYbO2_2 enters a long-range incommensurate, helical state with an ordering wave vector k=(0.384,±0.384,0){\bf{k}} = (0.384, \pm 0.384, 0) that "locks-in" to a commensurate k=(1/3,±1/3,0){\bf{k}} = (1/3, \pm 1/3, 0) phase under the application of a magnetic field. The spiral magnetic ground state of LiYbO2_2 can be understood in the framework of a Heisenberg J1−J2J_1-J_2 Hamiltonian on a stretched diamond lattice, where the propagation vector of the spiral is uniquely determined by the ratio of J2/∣J1∣J_2/|J_1|. The pure Heisenberg model, however, fails to account for the relative phasing between the Yb moments on the two sites of the bipartite lattice, and this detail as well as the presence of an intermediate, partially disordered, magnetic state below 1 K suggests interactions beyond the classical Heisenberg description of this material.

High order magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet αα-NaMnO2_2

Here we report on the formation of two and three magnon bound states in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet αα-NaMnO2_2, where the single-ion, uniaxial anisotropy inherent to the Mn3+^{3+} ions in this material provides a binding mechanism capable of stabilizing higher order magnon bound states. While such states have long remained elusive in studies of antiferromagnetic chains, neutron scattering data presented here demonstrate that higher order n>2n>2 composite magnons exist, and, specifically, that a weak three-magnon bound state is detected below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition of NaMnO2_2. We corroborate our findings with exact numerical simulations of a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain with easy-axis anisotropy using matrix-product state techniques, finding a good quantitative agreement with the experiment. These results establish αα-NaMnO2_2 as a unique platform for exploring the dynamics of composite magnon states inherent to a classical antiferromagnetic spin chain with Ising-like single ion anisotropy.
