Boltzmann-type collision operators for Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates: A unified framework

Starting from the Bogoliubov diagonalization for the Hamiltonian of a weakly interacting Bose gas under the presence of a Bose-Enstein Condensate, we derive the kinetic equation for the Bogoliubov excitations. Without dropping any of the commutators, we find three collisional processes. One of them describes the $1\leftrightarrow2$ interactions between the condensate and the excited atoms. The other two describe the $2\leftrightarrow2$ and $1\leftrightarrow3$ interactions between the excited atoms themselves.

Identification of linear dynamical systems and machine learning

The topic of identification of dynamic systems, has been at the core of modern control , following the fundamental works of Kalman. Realization Theory has been one of the major outcomes in this domain, with the possibility of identifying a dynamic system from an input-output relationship. The recent development of machine learning concepts has rejuvanated interest for identification. In this paper, we review briefly the results of realization theory, and develop some methods inspired by Machine Learning concepts.

Machine Learning and Control Theory

We survey in this article the connections between Machine Learning and Control Theory. Control Theory provide useful concepts and tools for Machine Learning. Conversely Machine Learning can be used to solve large control problems. In the first part of the paper, we develop the connections between reinforcement learning and Markov Decision Processes, which are discrete time control problems. In the second part, we review the concept of supervised learning and the relation with static optimization. Deep learning which extends supervised learning, can be viewed as a control problem. In the third part, we present the links between stochastic gradient descent and mean-field theory. Conversely, in the fourth and fifth parts, we review machine learning approaches to stochastic control problems, and focus on the deterministic case, to explain, more easily, the numerical algorithms.

On the energy cascade of 3-wave kinetic equations: Beyond Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions

In weak turbulence theory, the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectra is a class of time-independent solutions to the kinetic wave equations. In this paper, we construct a new class of time-dependent isotropic solutions to the decaying turbulence problems (whose solutions are energy conserved), with general initial conditions. These solutions exhibit the interesting property that the energy is cascaded from small wavenumbers to large wavenumbers. We can prove that starting with a regular initial condition whose energy at the infinity wave number $|p|=\infty$ is $0$, as time evolves, the energy is gradually accumulated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$. Finally, all the energy of the system is concentrated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$ and the energy function becomes a Dirac function at infinity $Eδ_{\{|p|=\infty\}}$, where $E$ is the total energy. The existence of this class of solutions is, in some sense, {the first complete rigorous} mathematical proof based on the kinetic description for the energy cascade phenomenon for waves with quadratic nonlinearities. We only represent in this paper the analysis of the statistical description of acoustic waves (and equivalently capillary waves). However, our analysis works for other cases as well.

eHDG:An Exponentially Convergent Iterative Solver for HDG Discretizations of Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations

We present a scalable and efficient iterative solver for high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations of hyperbolic partial differential equations. It is an interplay between domain decomposition methods and HDG discretizations. In particular, the method is a fixed-point approach that requires only independent element-by-element local solves in each iteration. As such, it is well-suited for current and future computing systems with massive concurrencies. We rigorously show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent in the number of iterations for transport and linearized shallow water equations. Furthermore, the convergence is independent of the solution order. Various 2D and 3D numerical results for steady and time-dependent problems are presented to verify our theoretical findings.

A Structure Preserving Scheme for the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck Equation

In this paper we introduce a numerical scheme which preserves the long time behavior of solutions to the Kolmogorov equation. The method presented is based on a self-similar change of variables technique to transform the Kolmogorov equation into a new form, such that the problem of designing structure preserving schemes, for the original equation, amounts to building a standard scheme for the transformed equation. We also present an analysis for the operator splitting technique for the self-similar method and numerical results for the described scheme.

Convergence to equilibrium of a linearized quantum Boltzmann equation for bosons at very low temperature

We consider an approximation of the linearised equation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation that describes the distribution of quasiparticles in a dilute gas of bosons at low temperature. The corresponding collision frequency is neither bounded from below nor from above. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions satisfying the conservation of energy. We show that these solutions converge to the corresponding stationary state, at an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity.

Nonlinear approximation theory for the homogeneous Boltzmann equation

A challenging problem in solving the Boltzmann equation numerically is that the velocity space is approximated by a finite region. Therefore, most methods are based on a truncation technique and the computational cost is then very high if the velocity domain is large. Moreover, sometimes, non-physical conditions have to be imposed on the equation in order to keep the velocity domain bounded. In this paper, we introduce the first nonlinear approximation theory for the Boltzmann equation. Our nonlinear wavelet approximation is non-truncated and based on a nonlinear, adaptive spectral method associated with a new wavelet filtering technique and a new formulation of the equation. A complete and new theory to study the method is provided. The method is proved to converge and perfectly preserve most of the properties of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation. It could also be considered as a general frame work for approximating kinetic integral equations.

Parallelizing the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck Equation

We design the first parallel scheme based on Schwarz waveform relaxation methods for the Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equation. We introduce a new convergence proof for the algorithms. We also provide results about the existence and uniqueness of a solution for this equation with several boundary conditions, in order to prove that our algorithms are well-posed. Numerical tests are also provided.

Convergence Properties of Overlapping Schwarz Domain Decomposition Algorithms

In this paper, we partially answer open questions about the convergence of overlapping Schwarz methods. We prove that overlapping Schwarz methods with Dirichlet transmission conditions for semilinear elliptic and parabolic equations always converge. While overlapping Schwarz methods with Robin transmission conditions only converge for semilinear parabolic equations, but not for semilinear elliptic ones. We then provide some conditions so that overlapping Schwarz methods with Robin transmission conditions converge for semilinear elliptic equations. Our new techniques can also be potentially applied to others kinds of partial differential equations.

A Parallel Four Step Domain Decomposition Scheme for Coupled Forward Backward Stochastic Differential Equations

Motivated by the idea of imposing paralleling computing on solving stochastic differential equations (SDEs), we introduce a new Domain Decomposition Scheme to solve forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) parallely. We reconstruct the Four Step Scheme in {MaProtterYong:1994:SFB} with some different conditions and then associate it with the idea of Domain Decomposition Methods. We also introduce a new technique to prove the convergence of Domain Decomposition Methods for systems of quasilinear parabolic equations and use it to prove the convergence of our scheme for the FBSDEs.

Parallel Schwarz Waveform Relaxation Algorithm for an N-Dimensional Semilinear Heat Equation

We present in this paper a proof of well-posedness and convergence for the parallel Schwarz Waveform Relaxation Algorithm adapted to an N-dimensional semilinear heat equation. Since the equation we study is an evolution one, each subproblem at each step has its own local existence time, we then determine a common existence time for every problem in any subdomain at any step. We also introduce a new technique: Exponential Decay Error Estimates, to prove the convergence of the Schwarz Methods, with multisubdomains, and then apply it to our problem.
