On The large Time Asymptotics of Schrödinger type equations with General Data

For the Schrödinger equation with a general interaction term, which may be linear or nonlinear, time dependent and including charge transfer potentials, we prove the global solutions are asymptotically given by the sum of a free wave and a weakly localized part. The proof is based on constructing in a new way the Free Channel Wave Operator, and further tools from the recent works \cite{Liu-Sof1,Liu-Sof2,SW2020}. This work generalizes the results of the first part of \cite{Liu-Sof1,Liu-Sof2} to arbitrary dimension, and non-radial data.

$L^p$ Boundedness of the Scattering Wave Operators of Schrödinger Dynamics -- Part 2

We give another proof of the $L^p$ boundedness of scattering wave operators, at the low frequency part of the data. The proof also allows the control of the commutator of multiplication by $|x|$ with the wave operator in $L^p$. The method we develop here is geared to proving similar results for \emph{time dependent potentials}, complementing previous work focused on the high frequency part.

Beyond Bogoliubov Dynamics

We consider a system of N interacting bosons in the mean-field scaling regime and construct corrections to the Bogoliubov dynamics that approximate the true N-body dynamics in norm to arbitrary precision. The N-independent corrections are given in terms of the solutions of the Bogoliubov and Hartree equations and satisfy a generalized form of Wick's theorem. We determine the n-point correlation functions of the excitations around the condensate, as well as the reduced densities of the N-body system, to arbitrary accuracy, given only the knowledge of the two-point functions of a quasi-free state and the solution of the Hartree equation. In this way, the complex problem of computing all n-point correlation functions for an interacting N-body system is essentially reduced to the problem of solving the Hartree equation and the PDEs for the Bogoliubov two-point functions.

On modified scattering for 1D quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with non-generic potentials

We consider the asymptotic behavior of small global-in-time solutions to a 1D Klein-Gordon equation with a spatially localized, variable coefficient quadratic nonlinearity and a non-generic linear potential. The purpose of this work is to continue the investigation of the occurrence of a novel modified scattering behavior of the solutions that involves a logarithmic slow-down of the decay rate along certain rays. This phenomenon is ultimately caused by the threshold resonance of the linear Klein-Gordon operator. It was previously uncovered for the special case of the zero potential in [51]. The Klein-Gordon model considered in this paper is motivated by the asymptotic stability problem for kink solutions arising in classical scalar field theories on the real line.

Large global solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations II, mass-supercritical, energy-subcritical cases

In this paper, we consider the defocusing mass-supercritical, energy-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $$ i\partial_{t}u+Δu= |u|^p u, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb R^{d+1}, $$ with $p\in (\frac4d,\frac4{d-2})$. We prove that under some restrictions on $d,p$, any radial function in the rough space $H^{s_0}(\mathbb R^d),\textit{for some } s_0<s_c$ with the support away from the origin, there exists an incoming/outgoing decomposition, such that the initial data in the outgoing part leads to the global well-posedness and scattering forward in time; while the initial data in the incoming part leads to the global well-posedness and scattering backward in time. The proof is based on Phase-Space analysis of the nonlinear dynamics.

Bilinear estimates in the presence of a large potential and a critical NLS in 3d

We propose an approach to nonlinear evolution equations with large and decaying external potentials that addresses the question of controlling globally-in-time the nonlinear interactions of localized waves in this setting. This problem arises when studying localized perturbations around (possibly non-decaying) special solutions of evolution PDEs, and trying to control the projection onto the continuous spectrum of the nonlinear radiative interactions. One of our main tools is the Fourier transform adapted to the Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+V$, which we employ at a nonlinear level. As a first step we analyze the spatial integral of the product of three generalized eigenfunctions of $H$, and determine the precise structure of its singularities. This leads to study bilinear operators with certain singular kernels, for which we derive product estimates of Coifman-Meyer type. This analysis can then be combined with multilinear harmonic analysis tools and the study of oscillations to obtain (distorted Fourier space analogues of) weighted estimates for dispersive and wave equations. As a first application we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $3$d in the presence of large decaying potential with no bound states, and with a $u^2$ non-linearity. The main difficulty is that a quadratic nonlinearity in $3$d is critical with respect to the Strauss exponent; moreover, this nonlinearity has non-trivial fully coherent interactions even when $V=0$. We prove quantitative global-in-time bounds and scattering for small solutions.

Decay and asymptotics for the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We obtain sharp decay estimates and asymptotics for small solutions to the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with constant coefficient cubic and spatially localized, variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities. Vector-field techniques to deal with the long-range nature of the cubic nonlinearity become problematic in the presence of variable coefficients. We introduce a novel approach based on pointwise-in-time local decay estimates for the Klein-Gordon propagator to overcome this impasse.

Higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons

In this paper, we introduce a novel method for deriving higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons. More precisely, we consider the dynamics of $N$ $d$-dimensional bosons for large $N$. The bosons initially form a Bose-Einstein condensate and interact with each other via a pair potential of the form $(N-1)^{-1}N^{dβ}v(N^β\cdot)$ for $β\in[0,\frac{1}{4d})$. We derive a sequence of $N$-body functions which approximate the true many-body dynamics in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^{d N})$-norm to arbitrary precision in powers of $N^{-1}$. The approximating functions are constructed as Duhamel expansions of finite order in terms of the first quantised analogue of a Bogoliubov time evolution.

On the energy cascade of 3-wave kinetic equations: Beyond Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions

In weak turbulence theory, the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectra is a class of time-independent solutions to the kinetic wave equations. In this paper, we construct a new class of time-dependent isotropic solutions to the decaying turbulence problems (whose solutions are energy conserved), with general initial conditions. These solutions exhibit the interesting property that the energy is cascaded from small wavenumbers to large wavenumbers. We can prove that starting with a regular initial condition whose energy at the infinity wave number $|p|=\infty$ is $0$, as time evolves, the energy is gradually accumulated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$. Finally, all the energy of the system is concentrated at $\{|p|=\infty\}$ and the energy function becomes a Dirac function at infinity $Eδ_{\{|p|=\infty\}}$, where $E$ is the total energy. The existence of this class of solutions is, in some sense, {the first complete rigorous} mathematical proof based on the kinetic description for the energy cascade phenomenon for waves with quadratic nonlinearities. We only represent in this paper the analysis of the statistical description of acoustic waves (and equivalently capillary waves). However, our analysis works for other cases as well.

A modulation equations approach for numerically solving the moving soliton and radiation solutions of NLS

Based on our previous work for solving the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with multichannel dynamics that is given by a localized standing wave and radiation, in this work we deal with the multichannel solution which consists of a moving soliton and radiation. We apply the modulation theory to give a system of ODEs coupled to the radiation term for describing the solution, which is valid for all times. The modulation equations are solved accurately by the proposed numerical method. The soliton and radiation are captured separately in the computation, and they are solved on the translated domain that is moving with them. Thus for a fixed finite physical domain in the lab frame, the multichannel solution can pass through the boundary naturally, which can not be done by imposing any existing boundary conditions. We comment on the differences of this method from the collective coordinates.

Dynamics of Noncommutative Solitons I: Spectral Theory and Dispersive Estimates

We consider the Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian given by a second order difference operator with nonconstant growing coefficients, on the half one dimensional lattice. This operator appeared first naturally in the construction and dynamics of noncommutative solitons in the context of noncommutative field theory. We prove pointwise in time decay estimates, with the optimal decay rate $t^{-1}\log^{-2}t$ generically. We use a novel technique involving generating functions of orthogonal polynomials to achieve this estimate.

Modulation equations approach for solving vortex and radiation in nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We apply the modulation theory to study the vortex and radiation solution in the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The full modulation equations which describe the dynamics of the vortex and radiation separately are derived. A general algorithm is proposed to efficiently and accurately find vortices with different values of energy and spin index. The modulation equations are solved by accurate numerical method. Numerical tests and simulations of scattering are given.

Multi-center Vector Field Methods for Wave Equations

We develop the method of vector-fields to further study Dispersive Wave Equations. Radial vector fields are used to get a-priori estimates such as the Morawetz estimate on solutions of Dispersive Wave Equations. A key to such estimates is the repulsiveness or nontrapping conditions on the flow corresponding to the wave equation. Thus this method is limited to potential perturbations which are repulsive, that is the radial derivative pointing away from the origin. In this work, we generalize this method to include potentials which are repulsive relative to a line in space (in three or higher dimensions), among other cases. This method is based on constructing multi-centered vector fields as multipliers, cancellation lemmas and energy localization.

Numerical implementation of the multiscale and averaging methods for quasi periodic systems

We consider the problem of numerically solving the Schrödinger equation with a potential that is quasi periodic in space and time. We introduce a numerical scheme based on a newly developed multi-time scale and averaging technique. We demonstrate that with this novel method we can solve efficiently and with rigorous control of the error such an equation for long times. A comparison with the standard split-step method shows substantial improvement in computation times, besides the controlled errors. We apply this method for a free particle driven by quasi-periodic potential with many frequencies. The new method makes it possible to evolve the Schrodinger equation for times much longer than was possible so far and to conclude that there are regimes where the energy growth stops in-spite of the driving.

Structure of Noncommutative Solitons: Existence and Spectral Theory

We consider the Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian given by a second order difference operator with nonconstant growing coefficients, on the half one dimensional lattice. This operator appeared first naturally in the construction and dynamics of noncommutative solitons in the context of noncommutative field theory. We construct a ground state soliton for this equation and analyze its properties. In particular we arrive at $\ell^{\infty}$ and $\ell^{1}$ estimates as well as a quasi-exponential spatial decay rate.

Abstract theory of decay estimates: perturbed Hamiltonians

For two self-adjoint operators $H,A$ we show that a general commutation relation of type $[H,\mathrm{i}A]=Q(H)+K$, in addition to regularity of $H$ and Kato-smoothness of $K$, guarantee pointwise in time decay rates of diverse order. The methodology is based on the construction of a modified conjugate operator $\tilde{A}$ that reduces the problem to previously developed estimates when $K=0$. Our results apply to energy thresholds and do not rely on resolvent estimates. We discuss applications for the Schrödinger equation (SE) with potential of critical decay, and for the free SE on an asymptotically flat manifold.

Dynamics of a Classical Particle in a Quasi Periodic Potential

We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional classical particle in a space and time dependent potential with randomly chosen parameters. The focus of this work is a quasi-periodic potential, which only includes a finite number of Fourier components. The momentum is calculated analytically for short time within a self-consistent approximation, under certain conditions. We find that the dynamics can be described by a model of a random walk between the Chirikov resonances, which are resonances between the particle momentum and the Fourier components of the potential. We use numerical methods to test these results and to evaluate the important properties, such as the characteristic hopping time between the resonances. This work sheds light on the short time dynamics induced by potentials which are relevant for optics and atom optics.

On multichannel solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations: algorithm, analysis and numerical explorations

We apply the method of modulation equations to numerically solve the NLS with multichannel dynamics, given by a trapped localized state and radiation. This approach employs the modulation theory of Soffer-Weinstein, which gives a system of ODE's coupled to the radiation term, which is valid for all times. We comment on the differences of this method from the well-known method of collective coordinates.

Slowly changing potential problems in Quantum Mechanics: Adiabatic Theorems, Ergodic Theorems, and Scattering

We employ the recently developed multi-time scale averaging method to study the large time behavior of slowly changing (in time) Hamiltonians. We treat some known cases in a new way, such as the Zener problem, and we give another proof of the Adiabatic Theorem in the gapless case. We prove a new Uniform Ergodic Theorem for slowly changing unitary operators. This theorem is then used to derive the adiabatic theorem, do the scattering theory for such Hamiltonians, and prove some classical propagation estimates and Asymptotic Completeness.

Soliton Mobility in Disordered Lattice

We investigate soliton mobility in the disordered Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model and the standard nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) lattice with the help of an effective potential generalizing the Peierls-Nabarro potential. This potential results from deviation from integrability, resulting of randomness for the AL model, and of both randomness and lattice discreteness for the NLS lattice. Statistical properties of such a potential are analyzed, and it is shown how the soliton mobility is affected by its size. The usefulness of this effective potential in studying soliton dynamics is demonstrated numerically. Further we propose two ways the soliton transport in presence of disorder can be enhanced: one is to use specific realizations of randomness, and the other one is to consider a specific soliton pair.

Soliton Trapping in Disordered Lattice

Dynamics of solitons of the Ablowitz-Ladik model in the presence of a random potential is studied. In absence of the random potential it is an integrable model and the solitons are stable. As a result of the random potential this stability is destroyed. In some regime, for short times particle-like dynamics with constant mass is found. There is another regime, where particle-like dynamics with varying mass takes place. In particular an effective potential is found. It predicts correctly changes in the direction of motion of the soliton. This potential is a scaling function of time and strength of the potential, leading to a relation between the first time when the soliton changes direction and the strength of the random potential.

Dynamics of Noncommutative Solitons II: Spectral Theory, Dispersive Estimates and Stability

We consider the Schrödinger equation with a (matrix) Hamiltonian given by a second order difference operator with nonconstant growing coefficients, on the half one dimensional lattice. This operator appeared first naturally in the construction and dynamics of noncommutative solitons in the context of noncommutative field theory. We completely determine the spectrum of the Hamiltonian linearized around a ground state soliton and prove the optimal decay rate of $t^{-1}\log^{-2}t$ for the associated time decay estimate. We use a novel technique involving generating functions of orthogonal polynomials to achieve this estimate.

Scattering for the Klein-Gordon equation with quadratic and variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We study the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearity. This problem exhibits a striking resonant interaction between the spatial frequencies of the nonlinear coefficients and the temporal oscillations of the solutions. In the case where the worst of this resonant behavior is absent, we prove L-Infinity scattering as well as a certain kind of strong smoothness for the solution at time-like infinity with the help of several new normal-forms transformations. Some explicit examples are also given which suggest qualitatively different behavior in the case where the strongest cubic resonances are present.

Multiscale time averaging, Reloaded

We develop a rigorously controlled multi-time scale averaging technique; the averaging is done on a finite time interval, properly chosen, and then, via iterations and normal form transformations, the time intervals are scaled to arbitrary order. Here, we consider as an example the problem of finite dimensional conservative dynamical system, which is quasiperiodic and dominated by slow frequencies, leading to small divisor problems in perturbative schemes.

Eigenvalue repulsion estimates and some applications for the one-dimensional Anderson model

We show that the spacing between eigenvalues of the discrete 1D Hamiltonian with arbitrary potentials which are bounded, and with Dirichlet or Neumann Boundary Conditions is bounded away from zero. We prove an explicit lower bound, given by $Ce^{-bN}$, where $N$ is the lattice size, and $C$ and $b$ are some finite constants. In particular, the spectra of such Hamiltonians have no degenerate eigenvalues. As applications we show that to leading order in the coupling, the solution of a nonlinearly perturbed Anderson model in one-dimension (on the lattice) remains exponentially localized, in probability and average sense for initial conditions given by a unique eigenfunction of the linear problem. We also bound the derivative of the eigenfunctions of the linear Anderson model with respect to a potential change.

Friction in a Model of Hamiltonian Dynamics

We study the motion of a heavy tracer particle weakly coupled to a dense ideal Bose gas exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation. In the so-called mean-field limit, the dynamics of this system approaches one determined by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution equations describing a process of emission of Cerenkov radiation of sound waves into the Bose-Einstein condensate along the particle's trajectory. The emission of Cerenkov radiation results in a friction force with memory acting on the tracer particle and causing it to decelerate until it comes to rest.

Monotonic Local Decay Estimates

For the Hamiltonian operator H = -Δ+V(x) of the Schrödinger Equation with a repulsive potential, the problem of local decay is considered. It is analyzed by a direct method, based on a new, L^2 bounded, propagation observable. The resulting decay estimate, is in certain cases monotonic in time, with no "Quantum Corrections". This method is then applied to some examples in one and higher dimensions. In particular the case of the Wave Equation on a Schwarzschild manifold is redone: Local decay, stronger than the known ones are proved (minimal loss of angular derivatives and lower order of radial derivatives of initial data). The method developed here can be an alternative in some cases to the Morawetz type estimates, with L^2-multipliers replacing the first order operators. It provides an alternative to Mourre's method, by including thresholds and high energies.

On pointwise decay of linear waves on a Schwarzschild black hole background

We prove sharp pointwise $t^{-3}$ decay for scalar linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole without symmetry assumptions on the data. We also consider electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations for which we obtain decay rates $t^{-4}$, and $t^{-6}$, respectively. We proceed by decomposition into angular momentum $\ell$ and summation of the decay estimates on the Regge-Wheeler equation for fixed $\ell$. We encounter a dichotomy: the decay law in time is entirely determined by the asymptotic behavior of the Regge-Wheeler potential in the far field, whereas the growth of the constants in $\ell$ is dictated by the behavior of the Regge-Wheeler potential in a small neighborhood around its maximum. In other words, the tails are controlled by small energies, whereas the number of angular derivatives needed on the data is determined by energies close to the top of the Regge-Wheeler potential. This dichotomy corresponds to the well-known principle that for initial times the decay reflects the presence of complex resonances generated by the potential maximum, whereas for later times the tails are determined by the far field. However, we do not invoke complex resonances at all, but rely instead on semiclassical Sigal-Soffer type propagation estimates based on a Mourre bound near the top energy.

The Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential: Results and Puzzles

The Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLSE) with a random potential is motivated by experiments in optics and in atom optics and is a paradigm for the competition between the randomness and nonlinearity. The analysis of the NLSE with a random (Anderson like) potential has been done at various levels of control: numerical, analytical and rigorous. Yet, this model equation presents us with a highly inconclusive and often contradictory picture. We will describe the main recent results obtained in this field and propose a list of specific problems to focus on, that we hope will enable to resolve these outstanding questions.

The Schroedinger Equation with Potential in Rough Motion

This paper proves endpoint Strichartz estimates for the linear Schroedinger equation in $R^3$, with a time-dependent potential that keeps a constant profile and is subject to a rough motion, which need not be differentiable and may be large in norm. The potential is also subjected to a time-dependent rescaling, with a non-differentiable dilation parameter. We use the Strichartz estimates to prove the non-dispersion of bound states, when the path is small in norm, as well as boundedness of energy. We also include a sample nonlinear application of the linear results.

A proof of Price's Law on Schwarzschild black hole manifolds for all angular momenta

Price's Law states that linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole fall off as $t^{-2\ell-3}$ for $t \to \infty$ provided the initial data decay sufficiently fast at spatial infinity. Moreover, if the perturbations are initially static (i.e., their time derivative is zero), then the decay is predicted to be $t^{-2\ell-4}$. We give a proof of $t^{-2\ell-2}$ decay for general data in the form of weighted $L^1$ to $L^\infty$ bounds for solutions of the Regge--Wheeler equation. For initially static perturbations we obtain $t^{-2\ell-3}$. The proof is based on an integral representation of the solution which follows from self--adjoint spectral theory. We apply two different perturbative arguments in order to construct the corresponding spectral measure and the decay bounds are obtained by appropriate oscillatory integral estimates.

Some Hamiltonian Models of Friction

Mathematical results on some models describing the motion of a tracer particle through a Bose-Einstein condensate are described. In the limit of a very dense, very weakly interacting Bose gas and for a very large particle mass, the dynamics of the coupled system is determined by classical non-linear Hamiltonian equations of motion. The particle's motion exhibits deceleration corresponding to friction (with memory) caused by the emission of Cerenkov radiation of gapless modes into the gas. Precise results are stated and outlines of proofs are presented. Some technical details are deferred to forthcoming papers.

A numerical and symbolical approximation of the Nonlinear Anderson Model

A modified perturbation theory in the strength of the nonlinear term is used to solve the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential. It is demonstrated that in some cases it is more efficient than other methods. Moreover we obtain error estimates. This approach can be useful for the solution of other nonlinear differential equations of physical relevance.

Perturbation theory for the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential

A perturbation theory for the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLSE) in 1D on a lattice was developed. The small parameter is the strength of the nonlinearity. For this purpose secular terms were removed and a probabilistic bound on small denominators was developed. It was shown that the number of terms grows exponentially with the order. The results of the perturbation theory are compared with numerical calculations. An estimate on the remainder is obtained and it is demonstrated that the series is asymptotic.
