Stimulated generation of deterministic platicon frequency microcombs

Dissipative Kerr soliton generation in chip-scale nonlinear resonators has recently observed remarkable advances, spanning from massively-parallel communications, self-referenced oscillators, to dual-comb spectroscopy. Often working in the anomalous dispersion regime, unique driving protocols and dispersion in these nonlinear resonators have been examined to achieve the soliton and soliton-like temporal pulse shapes and coherent frequency comb generation. The normal dispersion regime provides a complementary approach to bridge the nonlinear dynamical studies, including the possibility of square pulse formation with flat-top plateaus, or platicons. Here we report observations of square pulse formation in chip-scale frequency combs, through stimulated pumping at one free-spectral-range and in silicon nitride rings with +55 fs2/mm normal group velocity dispersion. Tuning of the platicon frequency comb via a varied sideband modulation frequency is examined in both spectral and temporal measurements. Determined by second-harmonic auto-correlation and cross-correlation, we observe bright square platicon pulse of 17 ps pulsewidth on a 19 GHz flat frequency comb. With auxiliary-laser-assisted thermal stabilization, we surpass the thermal bistable dragging and extend the mode-locking access to narrower 2 ps platicon pulse states, supported by nonlinear dynamical modeling and boundary limit discussions.

A chip-scale oscillation-mode optomechanical inertial sensor near the thermodynamical limits

High-precision inertial sensing and gravity sensing are key in navigation, oil exploration, and earthquake prediction. In contrast to prior accelerometers using piezoelectric or electronic capacitance readout techniques, optical readout provides narrow-linewidth high-sensitivity laser detection along with low-noise resonant optomechanical transduction near the thermodynamical limits. Here an optomechanical inertial sensor with 8.2micro-g/Hz^1/2 velocity random walk (VRW) at acquisition rate of 100 Hz and 50.9 micro-g bias instability is demonstrated, suitable for consumer and industrial grade applications, e.g., inertial navigation, inclination sensing, platform stabilization, and/or wearable device motion detection. Driven into optomechanical sustained-oscillation, the slot photonic crystal cavity provides radio-frequency readout of the optically-driven transduction with enhanced 625 microg/Hz sensitivity. Measuring the optomechanically-stiffened oscillation shift, instead of the optical transmission shift, provides a 220x VRW enhancement over pre-oscillation mode detection due to the strong optomechanical transduction. Supported by theory, this inertial sensor operates 2.56x above the thermodynamical limit at small integration times, with 43-dB dynamic range, in a solid-state room-temperature readout architecture.

A stabilized chip-scale Kerr frequency comb via a high-Q reference photonic microresonator

We stabilize a chip-scale Si3N4 phase-locked Kerr frequency comb via locking the pump laser to an independent stable high-Q reference microresonator and locking the comb spacing to an external microwave oscillator. In this comb, the pump laser shift induces negligible impact on the comb spacing change. This scheme is a step towards miniaturization of the stabilized Kerr comb system as the microresonator reference can potentially be integrated on-chip. Fractional instability of the optical harmonics of the stabilized comb is limited by the microwave oscillator used for comb spacing lock below 1 s averaging time and coincides with the pump laser drift in the long term.

Molecular-absorption-induced thermal bistablity in PECVD silicon nitride microring resonators

The wavelength selective linear absorption in communication C-band is investigated in CMOS-processed PECVD silicon nitride rings. In the overcoupled region, the linear absorption loss lowers the on-resonance transmission of a ring resonator and increases its overall quality factor. Both the linear absorption and ring quality factor are maximized near 1520 nm. The direct heating by phonon absorption leads to thermal optical bistable switching in PECVD silicon nitride based microring resonators. We calibrate the linear absorption rate in the microring resonator by measuring its transmission lineshape at different laser power levels, consistent with coupled mode theory calculations.

Radio frequency regenerative oscillations in monolithic high-Q/V heterostructured photonic crystal cavities

We report temporal and spectral domain observation of regenerative oscillation in monolithic silicon heterostructured photonic crystals cavities with high quality factor to mode volume ratios (Q/V). The results are interpreted by nonlinear coupled mode theory (CMT) tracking the dynamics of photon, free carrier population and temperature variations. We experimentally demonstrate effective tuning of the radio frequency (RF) tones by laser-cavity detuning and laser power levels, confirmed by the CMT simulations with sensitive input parameters.

Regenerative oscillation and four-wave mixing in graphene optoelectronics

The unique linear and massless band structure of graphene, in a purely two-dimensional Dirac fermionic structure, have led to intense research spanning from condensed matter physics to nanoscale device applications covering the electrical, thermal, mechanical and optical domains. Here we report three consecutive first-observations in graphene-silicon hybrid optoelectronic devices: (1) ultralow power resonant optical bistability; (2) self-induced regenerative oscillations; and (3) coherent four-wave mixing, all at a few femtojoule cavity recirculating energies. These observations, in comparison with control measurements with solely monolithic silicon cavities, are enabled only by the dramatically-large and chi(3) nonlinearities in graphene and the large Q/V ratios in wavelength-localized photonic crystal cavities. These results demonstrate the feasibility and versatility of hybrid two-dimensional graphene-silicon nanophotonic devices for next-generation chip-scale ultrafast optical communications, radio-frequency optoelectronics, and all-optical signal processing.

Selective tuning of high-Q silicon photonic crystal nanocavities via laser-assisted local oxidation

We examine the cavity resonance tuning of high-Q silicon photonic crystal heterostructures by localized laser-assisted thermal oxidation using a 532 nm continuous wave laser focused to a 2.5 mm radius spot-size. The total shift is consistent with the parabolic rate law. A tuning range of up to 8.7 nm is achieved with ~ 30 mW laser powers. Over this tuning range, the cavity Q decreases from 3.2\times10^5 to 1.2\times10^5. Numerical simulations model the temperature distributions in the silicon photonic crystal membrane and the cavity resonance shift from oxidation.

Deterministic integrated tuning of multi-cavity resonances and phase for slow-light in coupled photonic crystal cavities

We present the integrated chip-scale tuning of multiple photonic crystal cavities. The optimized implementation allows effective and precise tuning of multiple cavity resonances (up to ~1.60 nm/mW) and inter-cavity phase (~ 0.038 pi/mW) by direct local temperature tuning on silicon nanomembranes. Through designing the serpentine metal electrodes and careful electron-beam alignment to avoid cavity mode overlap, the coupled photonic crystal L3 cavities preserve their high quality factors. The deterministic resonance and phase control enables switching between the all-optical analogue of electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) to flat-top filter lineshapes, with future applications of trapping photons/photonic transistors and optoelectronic modulators.

Observations of four-wave mixing in slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguides

Four-wave mixing is observed in a silicon W1 photonic crystal waveguide. The dispersion dependence of the idler conversion efficiency is measured and shown to be enhanced at wavelengths exhibiting slow group velocities. A 12-dB increase in the conversion efficiency is observed. Concurrently, a decrease in the conversion bandwidth is observed due to the increase in group velocity dispersion in the slow-light regime. The experimentally observed conversion efficiencies agree with the numerically modeled results.
