Influence Maximization in Hypergraphs

Influence maximization in complex networks, i.e., maximizing the size of influenced nodes via selecting K seed nodes for a given spreading process, has attracted great attention in recent years. However, the influence maximization problem in hypergraphs, in which the hyperedges are leveraged to represent the interactions among more than two nodes, is still an open question. In this paper, we propose an adaptive degree-based heuristic algorithm, i.e., Heuristic Degree Discount (HDD), which iteratively selects nodes with low influence overlap as seeds, to solve the influence maximization problem in hypergraphs. We further extend algorithms from ordinary networks as baselines and compare the performance of the proposed algorithm and baselines on both real data and synthetic hypergraphs. Results show that HDD outperforms the baselines in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. Moreover, the experiments on synthetic hypergraphs indicate that HDD shows high performance, especially in hypergraphs with heterogeneous degree distribution.

Learning Distinctive Margin toward Active Domain Adaptation

Despite plenty of efforts focusing on improving the domain adaptation ability (DA) under unsupervised or few-shot semi-supervised settings, recently the solution of active learning started to attract more attention due to its suitability in transferring model in a more practical way with limited annotation resource on target data. Nevertheless, most active learning methods are not inherently designed to handle domain gap between data distribution, on the other hand, some active domain adaptation methods (ADA) usually requires complicated query functions, which is vulnerable to overfitting. In this work, we propose a concise but effective ADA method called Select-by-Distinctive-Margin (SDM), which consists of a maximum margin loss and a margin sampling algorithm for data selection. We provide theoretical analysis to show that SDM works like a Support Vector Machine, storing hard examples around decision boundaries and exploiting them to find informative and transferable data. In addition, we propose two variants of our method, one is designed to adaptively adjust the gradient from margin loss, the other boosts the selectivity of margin sampling by taking the gradient direction into account. We benchmark SDM with standard active learning setting, demonstrating our algorithm achieves competitive results with good data scalability. Topological Phases in AB-Stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$: $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Topological Insulators, Chern Insulators, and Topological Charge Density Waves

We present a theory on the quantum phase diagram of AB-stacked MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ using a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation performed in the plane-wave basis, motivated by the observation of topological states in this system. At filling factor $ν=2$ (two holes per moiré unit cell), Coulomb interaction can stabilize a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator by opening a charge gap. At $ν=1$, the interaction induces three classes of competing states, spin density wave states, an in-plane ferromagnetic state, and a valley polarized state, which undergo first-order phase transitions tuned by an out-of-plane displacement field. The valley polarized state becomes a Chern insulator for certain displacement fields. Moreover, we predict a topological charge density wave forming a honeycomb lattice with ferromagnetism at $ν=2/3$. Future directions on this versatile system hosting a rich set of quantum phases are discussed.

On the nature of the correlated insulator states in twisted bilayer graphene

We use self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations performed in the full $π$-band Hilbert space to assess the nature of the recently discovered correlated insulator states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We find that gaps between the flat conduction and valence bands open at neutrality over a wide range of twist angles, sometimes without breaking the system's valley projected ${\cal C}_{2}{\cal T}$ symmetry. Broken spin/valley flavor symmetries then enable gapped states to form not only at neutrality, but also at total moiré band filling $n = \pm p/4$ with integer $p = 1, 2, 3$, when the twist angle is close to the magic value at which the flat bands are most narrow. Because the magic-angle flat band quasiparticles are isolated from remote band quasiparticles only for effective dielectric constants larger than $ \sim 20$, the gapped states do not necessarily break \CT symmetry and as a consequence the insulating states at $n = \pm 1/4$ and $n = \pm 3/4$ need not exhibit a quantized anomalous Hall effect.

Microscopic Theory of Equilibrium Polariton Condensates

We present a microscopic theory of the equilibrium polariton condensate state of a semiconductor quantum well in a planar optical cavity. The theory accounts for the adjustment of matter excitations to the presence of a coherent photon field, predicts effective polariton-polariton interaction strengths that are weaker and condensate exciton fractions that are smaller than in the commonly employed exciton-photon model, and yields effective Rabi coupling strengths that depend on the detuning of the cavity photon energy relative to the bare exciton energy. The dressed quasiparticle bands that appear naturally in the theory provide a mechanism for electrical manipulation of polariton condensates.

Optical conductivity of the $t_{2g}$ two-dimensional electron gas

Motivated by recent interest in perovskite surfaces and heterostructures, we present an analysis of the Kubo conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in the $t_{2g}$ bands of an oxide with perovskite structure. We find that when the electric field is polarized in the plane of the 2DEG, the optical conductivity is dominated by nearly independent Drude contributions from two-dimensional subband Fermi surfaces, whereas for perpendicular-to-plane polarization it has strong intersubband features. Our analysis suggests that perpendicular-to-plane optical conductivity studies may help advance understanding of the interplay between lattice distortions and electron-electron interactions in complex oxide 2DEG quantum confinement physics.
