The odd ideal gas: Hall viscosity and thermal conductivity from non-Hermitian kinetic theory

The flow of momentum and energy in a fluid is typically associated with dissipative transport coefficients: viscosity and thermal conductivity. Fluids that break certain symmetries such as mirror symmetry and time-reversal invariance can display non-dissipative transport coefficients called odd (or Hall) viscosities and thermal conductivities. The goal of this paper is to elucidate the microscopic origin of these dissipationless transport coefficients using kinetic theory. We show that odd viscosity and odd thermal conductivity arise when the linearized collision operator is not Hermitian. This symmetry breaking occurs when collisions are chiral, i.e. not mirror symmetric. To capture this feature in a minimalistic way, we introduce a modified relaxation time approximation in which the distribution function is rotated by an angle characterizing the average chirality of the collisions. In the limit of an infinitesimal rotation, the effect of the parity-violating collisions can be described as an emergent effective magnetic field.

Every planar graph is $1$-defective $(9,2)$-paintable

Assume $L$ is a $k$-list assignment of a graph $G$. A $d$-defective $m$-fold $L$-colouring $ϕ$ of $G$ assigns to each vertex $v$ a set $ϕ(v)$ of $m$ colours, so that $ϕ(v) \subseteq L(v)$ for each vertex $v$, and for each colour $i$, the set $\{v: i \in ϕ(v)\}$ induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most $d$. In this paper, we consider on-line list $d$-defective $m$-fold colouring of graphs, where the list assignment $L$ is given on-line, and the colouring is constructed on-line. To be precise, the $d$-defective $(k,m)$-painting game on a graph $G$ is played by two players: Lister and Painter. Initially, each vertex has $k$ tokens and is uncoloured. In each round, Lister chooses a set $M$ of vertices and removes one token from each chosen vertex. Painter colours a subset $X$ of $M$ which induces a subgraph $G[X]$ of maximum degree at most $d$. A vertex $v$ is fully coloured if $v$ has received $m$ colours. Lister wins if at the end of some round, there is a vertex with no more tokens left and is not fully coloured. Otherwise, at some round, all vertices are fully coloured and Painter wins. We say $G$ is $d$-defective $(k,m)$-paintable if Painter has a winning strategy in this game. This paper proves that every planar graph is $1$-defective $(9,2)$-paintable.

Renormalized Surface Charge Density for a Strongly Charged Plate in Asymmetric Electrolytes: Asymptotic Exact Results in Poisson Boltzmann Theory

The Poisson-Boltzmann equation for a strongly charged plate inside a generic charge-asymmetric electrolyte is solved using the method of asymptotic matching. Both near field and far field asymptotic behaviors of the potential are systematically analyzed. Using these expansions, the renormalized surface charge density is obtained as an asymptotic series in terms of the bare surface charge density.
