Direct Observation of Coherent Longitudinal and Shear Acoustic Phonons in TaAs Using Ultrafast X-ray Diffraction

Using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral lineshape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.

Keldysh space control of charge dynamics in a strongly driven Mott insulator

The fate of a Mott insulator under strong low frequency optical driving conditions is a fundamental problem in quantum many-body dynamics. Using ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy, we measured the transient electronic structure and charge dynamics of an off-resonantly pumped Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$. We observe coherent bandwidth renormalization and nonlinear doublon-holon pair production occurring in rapid succession within a sub-100 femtosecond pump pulse duration. By sweeping the electric field amplitude, we demonstrate continuous bandwidth tuning and a Keldysh cross-over from a multi-photon absorption to quantum tunneling dominated pair production regime. Our results provide a procedure to control coherent and nonlinear heating processes in Mott insulators, facilitating the discovery of novel out-of-equilibrium phenomena in strongly correlated systems.

Revealing Charge Carrier Dynamics and Transport in Te-Doped GaAsSb and GaAsSbN Nanowires by Correlating Ultrafast Terahertz Spectroscopy and Optoelectronic Characterization

Recent advances in the growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) hold great promise for nanoscale optoelectronic device applications. Recently, it was found that a small amount of nitrogen (N) incorporation in III-V semiconductor NWs can effectively red-shift their wavelength of operation and tailor their electronic properties for specific applications. However, understanding the impact of N incorporation on non-equilibrium charge carrier dynamics and transport in semiconducting NWs is critical in achieving efficient semiconducting NW devices. In this work, ultrafast optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy (OPTP) and electrical characterization have been used to study non-equilibrium carrier dynamics and equilibrium transport in Te-doped GaAsSb and dilute nitride GaAsSb NWs, with the goal of correlating these results with their photo-response under bias and their low-frequency noise characteristics. Nitrogen incorporation in GaAsSb NWs led to a significant increase in the carrier scattering rate, resulting in a severe reduction in carrier mobility. Carrier recombination lifetimes of 33 ps and 147 ps in GaAsSbN and GaAsSb NWs, respectively, were determined using ultrafast OPTP measurements. The reduction in the carrier lifetime and photoinduced optical conductivities are due to the presence of N-induced defects, leading to deterioration in the electrical and optical characteristics of dilute nitride NWs relative to the non-nitride NWs. Finally, we observed a very fast rise time of ~ 2 ps for both NW materials, directly impacting their potential use as high-speed photodetectors.

High Entropy Oxide Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Relaxor ferrolectrics are important in technological applications due to a strong electromechanical response, energy storage capacity, electrocaloric effect, and pyroelectric energy conversion properties. Current efforts to discover and design new materials in this class generally rely on substitutional doping of known ferroelectrics, as slight changes to local compositional order can significantly affect the Curie temperature, morphotropic phase boundary, and electromechanical responses. In this work, we demonstrate that moving to the strong limit of compositional complexity in an ABO3 perovskite allows stabilization of novel relaxor responses that do not rely on a single narrow phase transition region. Entropy-assisted synthesis approaches are used to create single crystal Ba(Ti0.2Sn0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3 [Ba(5B)O] films. The high levels of configurational disorder present in this system is found to influence dielectric relaxation, phase transitions, nano-polar domain formation, and Curie temperature. Temperature-dependent dielectric, Raman spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation measurements reveal multiple phase transitions, a high Curie temperature of 570 K, and the relaxor ferroelectric nature of Ba(5B)O films. The first principles theory calculations are used to predict possible combinations of cations to quantify the relative feasibility of formation of highly disordered single-phase perovskite systems. The ability to stabilize single-phase perovskites with such a large number of different cations on the B-sites offers new possibilities for designing high-performance materials for piezoelectric, pyroelectric and tunable dielectric applications.

Nematic response revealed by coherent phonon oscillations in BaFe$_2$As$_2$

We investigate coherent phonon oscillations of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Time-resolved optical reflectivity shows periodic modulations due to $A_{1g}$ coherent phonon of $c$-axis arsenic vibrations. Optical probe beams polarized along the orthorhombic $a$- and $b$-axes reveal that the initial phase of coherent oscillations shows a systematic deviation as a function of temperature, although these oscillations arise from the same $c$-axis arsenic vibrations. The oscillation-phase remains anisotropic even in the tetragonal structure, reflecting a nematic response of BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our study suggests that investigation on the phase of coherent phonon oscillations in optical reflectivity can offer unique evidence of a nematic order strongly coupled to a lattice instability.

Induced ferromagnetic moment at the interface between epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ film and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ single crystal

SrRuO$_3$ (SRO113) is an important material for device physics particularly as one of the best metallic oxide electrodes for ferroelectric devices. This oxide has moderate electron correlations with novel properties including ferromagnetic ordering, which can be utilized in future to spintronics and superconducting spintronics devices. Recently, we observed strongly enhanced magnetization of SRO113 thin films grown on single crystals of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ (SRO214). To clarify the origin of such an enhancement, we conducted systematic investigations of magnetic properties of SRO113 films deposited on a variety of oxide substrates. We carefully subtracted the substrate contributions and found that the enhanced 2 magnetization occurs only for SRO113/SRO214 films. We further found that neither strain nor metallicity of the substrate plays any significant roles in the enhancement. The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals that the substrate-induced strain does not switch the Ru4+ state from the low-spin to high-spin states. The film-thickness dependence of the magnetization of SRO113/SRO214 films strongly suggest that the additional magnetization arises due to the induction of magnetic moment into the SRO214 substrate over 20-nm depth. Our results imply new magnetic functionality that can trigger studies searching for yet unknown physical phenomena in magnetic ruthenates.
