Killing weights from the perspective of t-structures

This paper is devoted to morphisms killing weights in a range (as defined by the first author) and to objects without these weights (as essentially defined by J. Wildeshaus) in a triangulated category endowed with a weight structure w. We describe several new criteria for morphisms and objects to satisfy these conditions. In some of them we use virtual t-truncations and a t-structure adjacent to w. In the case where the latter exists we prove that a morphism kills weights $m,...,n$ if and only if it factors through an object without these weights; we also construct new families of torsion theories and projective and injective classes. As a consequence, we obtain some "weakly functorial decompositions" of spectra (in the stable homotopy category SH) and a new description of those morphisms that act trivially on degree zero singular cohomology with coefficients in every abelian group.

On perfectly generated weight structures and adjacent $t$-structures

This paper is dedicated to the study of smashing weight structures (one may say that these are weight structures "coherent with arbitrary coproducts"), and the application of their properties to $t$-structures. In particular, we prove that hearts of compactly generated $t$-structures are Grothendieck abelian; this statement strengthens earlier results of several other authors. The central theorem of the paper is as follows: any perfect set of objects of a triangulated category generates a weight structure; we say that weight structures obtained this way are perfectly generated. An important family of perfectly generated weight structures are the ones adjacent to compactly generated $t$-structures; they give injective cogenerators for the hearts of the latter. We also establish the following not so explicit result: any smashing weight structure on a well generated triangulated category (this class of categories contains compactly generated ones) is perfectly generated; actually, we prove more than that. Moreover, we give a classification of compactly generated torsion theories (these generalize both weight structures and $t$-structures) that extends the corresponding result of D. Pospisil D. and J. Šťoviček to arbitrary smashing triangulated categories.

On Chow-pure cohomology and Euler characteristics for motives and varieties, and their relation to unramified cohomology and Brauer groups

We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.

On Chow-weight homology of motivic complexes and its relation to motivic homology

We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. Moreover, we prove that if higher motivic homology groups of a geometric motif or a variety over a universal domain are torsion (in a certain "range") then the exponents of these groups are uniformly bounded. To prove our main results we study Voevodsky slices of motives. Since the slice functors do not respect the compactness of motives, the results of the previous Chow-weight homology paper are not sufficient for our purposes; this is our main reason to extend them to ($w_{Chow}$-bounded below) motivic complexes.

On weight complexes, pure functors, and detecting weights

This paper is dedicated to the study of weight complexes (defined on triangulated categories endowed with weight structures) and their applications. We introduce pure (co)homological functors that "ignore all non-zero weights"; these have a nice description in terms of weight complexes. For the weight structure $w^G$ generated by the orbit category in the $G$-equivariant stable homotopy category $SH(G)$ the corresponding pure cohomological functors into abelian groups are the Bredon cohomology associated to Mackey functors ones; pure functors related to motivic weight structures are also quite useful. Our results also give some (more) new weight structures. Moreover, we prove that certain exact functors are conservative and "detect weights".

The hearts of weight structures are the weakly idempotent complete categories

In this note we prove that additive categories that occur as hearts of weight structures are precisely the weakly idempotent completecategories, that is, the categories where all split monomorphisms give direct sum decompositions. We also give several other conditions equivalent to weak idempotent completeness (some of them are completely new), and discuss weak idempotent completions of additive categories.

A Nullstellensatz for triangulated categories

The main goal of this paper is to prove the following: for a triangulated category $ \underline{C}$ and $E\subset \operatorname{Obj} \underline{C}$ there exists a cohomological functor $F$ (with values in some abelian category) such that $E$ is its set of zeros if (and only if) $E$ is closed with respect to retracts and extensions (so, we obtain a certain Nullstellensatz for functors of this type). Moreover, for $ \underline{C}$ being an $R$-linear category (where $R$ is a commutative ring) this is also equivalent to the existence of an $R$-linear $F: \underline{C}^{op}\to R-\operatorname{mod}$ satisfying this property. As a corollary, we prove that an object $Y$ belongs to the corresponding "envelope" of some $D\subset \operatorname{Obj} \underline{C}$ whenever the same is true for the images of $Y$ and $D$ in all the categories $ \underline{C}_p$ obtained from $ \underline{C}$ by means of "localizing the coefficients" at maximal ideals $p\triangleleft R$. Moreover, to prove our theorem we develop certain new methods for relating triangulated categories to their (non-full) countable triangulated subcategories. The results of this paper can be applied to the study of weight structures and of triangulated categories of motives.

A 'fat hyperplane section' weak Lefschetz (in arbitrary characteristic), and Barth-type theorems

We prove a certain 'fat hyperplane section' Weak Lefschetz-type theorem for etale cohomology of non-projective varieties, similar to a result of Goresky and MacPherson (over complex numbers). This statement easily yields certain (vast) generalizations of the 'ordinary' Weak Lefschetz and Barth's theorems in arbitrary characteristic (that do not require any stratified Morse theory for their proof).

Gersten weight structures for motivic homotopy categories; direct summands of cohomology of function fields and coniveau spectral sequences

For any cohomology theory $H$ that can be factorized through (the Morel-Voevodsky's triangulated motivic homotopy category) $SH^{S^1}(k)$ (or through $SH(k)$) we establish the $SH^{S^1}(k)$-functorialty (resp. $SH(k)$-one) of coniveau spectral sequences for $H$. We also prove: for any affine essentially smooth semi-local $S$ the Cousin complex for $H^*(S)$ splits; if $H$ also factorizes through $SH^+(k)$ or $SH^{MGL}(k)$, then this is also true for any primitive $S$. Moreover, the cohomology of such an $S$ is a direct summand of the cohomology of any its open dense subscheme. This is a vast generalization of the results of a previous paper. In order to prove these results we consider certain categories of motivic pro-spectra, and introduce Gersten weight structures for them. Our results rely on several interesting statements on weight structures in cocompactly cogenerated triangulated categories and on the '$SH^+(k)$-acyclity' of primitive schemes. .

On Chow weight structures for $cdh$-motives with integral coefficients

The main goal of this paper is to define a certain Chow weight structure $w_{Chow}$ on the category $DM_c(S)$ of (constructible) $cdh$-motives over an equicharacteristic scheme $S$. In contrast to the previous papers of D. Hébert and the first author on weights for relative motives (with rational coefficients), we can achieve our goal for motives with integral coefficients (if $\operatorname{char}S=0$; if $\operatorname{char}S=p>0$ then we consider motives with $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}]$-coefficients). We prove that the properties of the Chow weight structures that were previously established for $\mathbb{Q}$-linear motives can be carried over to this "integral" context (and we generalize some of them using certain new methods). In this paper we mostly study the version of $w_{Chow}$ defined via "gluing from strata"; this enables us to define Chow weight structures for a wide class of base schemes. As a consequence, we certainly obtain certain (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and filtrations for any (co)homology of motives.

On perverse homotopy $t$-structures, coniveau spectral sequences, cycle modules, and relative Gersten weight structures

We study the category $DM(S)$ of Beilinson motives (as described by Cisinski and Deglise) over a more or less general base scheme $S$, and establish several nice properties for a version $t_{hom}(S)$ of the perverse homotopy $t$-structure (essentially defined by Ayoub) for it. $t_{hom}(S)$ is characterized in terms of certain stalks of an $S$-motif $H$ and its Tate twists at fields over $S$; it is closely related to certain coniveau spectral sequences for the cohomology of (the Borel-Moore motives of) arbitrary finite type $S$-schemes. We conjecture that the heart of $t_{hom}(S)$ is given by cycle modules over $S$ (as defined by Rost); for varieties over characteristic $0$ fields this conjecture was recently proved by Deglise. Our definition of $t_{hom}(S)$ is closely related to a new effectivity filtration for $DM(S)$ (and for the subcategory of Chow $S$-motives in it). We also sketch the construction of a certain Gersten weight structure for the category of $S$-comotives; this weight structure yields one more description of $t_{hom}(S)$ and its heart.

Weights for relative motives; relation with mixed complexes of sheaves

The main goal of this paper is to define the so-called Chow weight structure for the category of Beilinson motives over any 'reasonable' base scheme $S$ (this is the version of Voevodsky's motives over $S$ defined by Cisinski and Deglise). We also study the functoriality properties of the Chow weight structure (they are very similar to the well-known functoriality of weights for mixed complexes of sheaves). As shown in a preceding paper, the Chow weight structure automatically yields an exact conservative weight complex functor (with values in $K^b(Chow(S))$). Here $Chow(S)$ is the heart of the Chow weight structure; it is 'generated' by motives of regular schemes that are projective over $S$. Besides, Grothendiek's group of $S$-motives is isomorphic to $K_0(Chow(S))$; we also define a certain 'motivic Euler characteristic' for $S$-schemes. We obtain (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and filtrations for any cohomology of motives; we discuss their relation to Beilinson's 'integral part' of motivic cohomology and to weights of mixed complexes of sheaves. For the study of the latter we introduce a new formalism of relative weight structures.

Mixed motivic sheaves (and weights for them) exist if 'ordinary' mixed motives do

The goal of this paper is to prove: if certain 'standard' conjectures on motives over algebraically closed fields hold, then over any 'reasonable' $S$ there exists a motivic $t$-structure for the category of Voevodsky's $S$-motives (as constructed by Cisinski and Deglise). If $S$ is 'very reasonable' (for example, of finite type over a field) then the heart of this $t$-structure (the category of mixed motivic sheaves over $S$) is endowed with a weight filtration with semi-simple factors. We also prove a certain 'motivic decomposition theorem' (assuming the conjectures mentioned) and characterize semi-simple motivic sheaves over $S$ in terms of those over its residue fields. Our main tool is the theory of weight structures. We actually prove somewhat more than the existence of a weight filtration for mixed motivic sheaves: we prove that the motivic $t$-structure is transversal to the Chow weight structure for $S$-motives (that was introduced previously and independently by D. Hebert and the author; weight structures and their transversality with t-structures were also defined by the author in recent papers). We also deduce several properties of mixed motivic sheaves from this fact. Our reasoning relies on the degeneration of Chow-weight spectral sequences for 'perverse 'etale homology' (that we prove unconditionally); this statement also yields the existence of the Chow-weight filtration for such (co)homology that is strictly restricted by ('motivic') morphisms.

On weights for relative motives with integral coefficients

The goal of this paper is to define a certain Chow weight structure for the category of Voevodsky's motivic complexes with integral coefficients (as described by Cisinski and Deglise) over any excellent finite-dimensional separated scheme $S$. Our results are parallel to (though substantially weaker than) the corresponding 'rational coefficient' statements proved by D. Hebert and the author. As an immediate consequence of the existence of 'weights', we obtain certain (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and filtrations for any (co)homology of $S$-motives.

Weights and t-structures: in general triangulated categories, for 1-motives, mixed motives, and for mixed Hodge complexes and modules

We study certain 'weights' for triangulated categories endowed with $t$-structures. Our results axiomatize and describe in detail the relations between the Chow weight structure (introduced in a preceding paper), the (conjectural) motivic t-structure for Voevodsky's motives, and the conjectural weight filtration for them. This picture becomes non-conjectural when restricted to the derived categories of 1-motives (over a smooth base) and of Artin-Tate motives over number fields; other examples include Beilinson's derived category of graded polarizable mixed Hodge complexes and Saito's derived category of mixed Hodge modules. We also study weight filtrations for the heart of $t$ and (the degeneration of) weight spectral sequences. In a subsequent paper we apply the results obtained in order to prove that (certain) 'standard' conjectures imply the existence of Beilinson's categories of mixed motivic sheaves endowed with weight filtrations.

Z[1/p]-motivic resolution of singularities

The main goal of this paper is to deduce (from a recent resolution of singularities result of Gabber) the following fact: (effective) Chow motives with $Z[1/p]$-coefficients over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p$ generate the category $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]$ (of effective geometric Voevodsky's motives with $Z[1/p]$-coefficients). It follows that $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]$ could be endowed with a Chow weight structure $w_{Chow}$ whose heart is $Chow^{eff}[1/p]$ (weight structures were introduced in a preceding paper, where the existence of $w_{Chow}$ for $DM^{eff}_{gm}Q$ was also proved). As shown in previous papers, this statement immediately yields the existence of a conservative weight complex functor $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]\to K^b(Chow^{eff}[1/p])$ (which induces an isomorphism on $K_0$-groups), as well as the existence of canonical and functorial (Chow)-weight spectral sequences and weight filtrations for any cohomology theory on $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]$. We also define a certain Chow t-structure for $DM_{-}^{eff}[1/p]$ and relate it with unramified cohomology. To this end we study birational motives and birational homotopy invariant sheaves with transfers.

Weight structures and motives; comotives, coniveau and Chow-weight spectral sequences, and mixed complexes of sheaves: a survey

This is a survey of author's results on weight structures and Voevodsky's motives. Weight structures are natural counterparts of t-structures (for triangulated categories) introduced by the author. They allow to construct weight complexes, weight filtrations, and weight spectral sequences for various cohomology theories. Partial cases of the latter are: 'classical' weight spectral sequences (for singular and etale cohomology), coniveau spectral sequences, and Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequences. All of those are mentioned in the current paper. The details, proofs, and several more results could be found in other papers of the author (cited here). We also mention a certain triangulated category of comotives that contains reasonable (co)motives for all function fields (and also of other projective limits of smooth varieties).
