Generalized transportation cost spaces

The paper is devoted to the geometry of transportation cost spaces and their generalizations introduced by Melleray, Petrov, and Vershik (2008). Transportation cost spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein $1$ spaces. In this work, the existence of metric spaces with the following properties is proved: (1) uniformly discrete infinite metric spaces transportation cost spaces on which do not contain isometric copies of $\ell_1$, this result answers a question raised by Cuth and Johanis (2017); (2) locally finite metric spaces which admit isometric embeddings only into Banach spaces containing isometric copies of $\ell_1$; (3) metric spaces for which the double-point norm is not a norm. In addition, it is proved that the double-point norm spaces corresponding to trees are close to $\ell_\infty^d$ of the corresponding dimension, and that for all finite metric spaces $M$, except a very special class, the infimum of all seminorms for which the embedding of $M$ into the corresponding seminormed space is isometric, is not a seminorm.

Metric spaces nonembeddable into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property and thick families of geodesics

We show that a geodesic metric space which does not admit bilipschitz embeddings into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property does not necessarily contain a bilipschitz image of a thick family of geodesics. This is done by showing that any thick family of geodesics is not Markov convex, and comparing this result with results of Cheeger-Kleiner, Lee-Naor, and Li. The result contrasts with the earlier result of the author that any Banach space without the Radon-Nikodým property contains a bilipschitz image of a thick family of geodesics.

Metric characterizations of superreflexivity in terms of word hyperbolic groups and finite graphs

We show that superreflexivity can be characterized in terms of bilipschitz embeddability of word hyperbolic groups. We compare characterizations of superreflexivity in terms of diamond graphs and binary trees. We show that there exist sequences of series-parallel graphs of increasing topological complexity which admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into a Hilbert space, and thus do not characterize superreflexivity.

On metric characterizations of some classes of Banach spaces

The paper contains the following results and observations: (1) There exists a sequence of unweighted graphs $\{G_n\}_n$ with maximum degree 3 such that a Banach space $X$ has no nontrivial cotype iff $\{G_n\}_n$ admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into $X$; (2) The same for Banach spaces with no nontrivial type; (3) A sequence $\{G_n\}$ characterizing Banach spaces with no nontrivial cotype in the sense described above can be chosen to be a sequence of bounded degree expanders; (4) The infinite diamond does not admit a bilipschitz embedding into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property; (5) A new proof of the Cheeger-Kleiner result: The Laakso space does not admit a bilipschitz embedding into Banach spaces with the Radon-Nikodým property; (6) A new proof of the Johnson-Schechtman result: uniform bilipschitz embeddability of finite diamonds into a Banach space implies its nonsuperreflexivity.
