A model of persistent breaking of continuous symmetry

We consider a UV-complete field-theoretic model in general dimensions, including $d=2+1$, that exhibits spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetry, persisting to arbitrarily large temperatures. Our model consists of two copies of the long-range vector models, with $O(m)$ and $O(N-m)$ global symmetry groups, perturbed by double-trace operators. Using conformal perturbation theory we find weakly-coupled IR fixed points for $N\geq 6$ that reveal a spontaneous breaking of global symmetry. Namely, at finite temperature the lower rank group is broken, with the pattern persisting at all temperatures due to scale-invariance. We provide evidence that the models in question are unitary and invariant under full conformal symmetry. Our work generalizes recent results, which considered the particular case of $m=1$ and reported persistent breaking of the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2=O(1)$. Furthermore, we show that this model exhibits a continuous family of weakly interacting field theories at finite $N$.

Solvable time-like cosets and holography beyond $AdS$

We build a novel time-like coset sigma-model describing type-II superstring theory in a charged rotating black-brane background that interpolates between a locally $AdS_3$ in the IR and a linear-dilaton geometry in the UV. This allows one to perform a systematic study of holography in non-AdS backgrounds which are smoothly connected to $AdS_3$. We construct massless closed string states vertex operators in the NS-NS sector, calculate the corresponding two-point correlation functions, and discuss holographic interpretation of our results from 4+1 dimensional boundary field theory point of view. Compactifying the theory on $\mathbb{T}^4$, we show that the spectrum of a single long string with unit winding agrees with the spectrum of a CFT$_2$ deformed by $T\bar{T}$. We also calculate correlation functions of operators of the dual 1+1 dimensional non-conformal boundary field theory using world-sheet techniques.

Vector model in various dimensions

We study behaviour of the critical $O(N)$ vector model with quartic interaction in $2 \leq d \leq 6$ dimensions to the next-to-leading order in the large-$N$ expansion. We derive and perform consistency checks that provide an evidence for the existence of a non-trivial fixed point and explore the corresponding CFT. In particular, we use conformal techniques to calculate the multi-loop diagrams up to and including 4 loops in general dimension. These results are used to calculate a new CFT data associated with the three-point function of the Hubbard- Stratonovich field. In $6-ε$ dimensions our results match their counterparts obtained within a proposed alternative description of the model in terms of $N+1$ massless scalars with cubic interactions. In $d=3$ we find that the OPE coefficient vanishes up to $\mathcal{O}(1/N^{3/2})$ order.

Dense Chern-Simons Matter with Fermions at Large N

In this paper we investigate properties of Chern-Simons theory coupled to massive fermions in the large N limit. We demonstrate that at low temperatures the system is in a Fermi liquid state whose features can be systematically compared to the standard phenomenological theory of Landau Fermi liquids. This includes matching microscopically derived Landau parameters with thermodynamic predictions of Landau Fermi liquid theory. We also calculate the exact conductivity and viscosity tensors at zero temperature and finite chemical potential. In particular we point out that the Hall conductivity of an interacting system is not entirely accounted for by the Berry flux through the Fermi sphere. Furthermore, investigation of the thermodynamics in the non-relativistic limit reveals novel phenomena at strong coupling. As the 't Hooft coupling approaches 1, the system exhibits an extended intermediate temperature regime in which the thermodynamics is described by neither the quantum Fermi liquid theory nor the classical ideal gas law. Instead, it can be interpreted as a weakly coupled quantum Bose gas.

On entanglement entropy in 't Hooft model

We use the replica trick approach to calculate, in the large-N limit, the entanglement c-function in two-dimensional quantum chromodynamics with the gauge group U(N) and quark in the fundamental representation ('t Hooft model). We show explicitly that the result is equal to a sum (with certain numerical coefficients) of entanglement c-functions of free massive scalars, which represent mesons in spectrum of the 't Hooft model. Interestingly, each meson contributes as a point-like particle. We provide an explanation for why this is the case.

Phases of holographic superconductors with broken translational symmetry

We consider holographic superconductors in a broad class of massive gravity backgrounds. These theories provide a holographic description of a superconductor with broken translational symmetry. Such models exhibit a rich phase structure: depending on the values of the temperature and the disorder strength the boundary system can be in superconducting, normal metallic or normal pseudoinsulating phases. Furthermore the system supports interesting collective excitation of the charge carriers, which appears in the normal phase, persists in the superconducting phase, but eventually gets destroyed by the superconducting condensate. We also show the possibility of building a phase diagram of a system with the superconducting phase occupying a dome-shaped region on the temperature-disorder plane.

AdS/CFT and Landau Fermi liquids

We study the field theory dual to a charged gravitational background in which the low temperature entropy scales linearly with the temperature. We exhibit the existence of a sound mode which is described by hydrodynamics, even at energies much larger than the temperature, and explain how this, and other properties of the field theory, are consistent with those of a (3+1)-dimensional Landau Fermi liquid, finely tuned to the Pomeranchuk critical point. We also discuss how one could engineer a higher-derivative gravitational Lagrangian which reproduces the correct low temperature behavior of shear viscosity in a generic Landau Fermi liquid.

Stringy holography at finite density

We consider an exactly solvable worldsheet string theory in the background of a black brane with a gauge field flux. Holographically, such a system can be interpreted as a field theory with finite number of degrees of freedom at finite temperature and density. This is to be contrasted with more conventional holographic models which involve gravity in the bulk and possess infinite number of degrees of freedom and mean field critical exponents. We construct closed string vertex operators which holographically represent the U(1) gauge field and the stress energy tensor and compute their two-point functions. At finite temperature and vanishing charge density the low energy excitations are described by hydrodynamics. As the density is raised, the system behaves like a sum of two noninteracting fluids. We find low-energy excitations in the shear and sound channels of each fluid.

Fluctuations in finite density holographic quantum liquids

We study correlators of the global U(1) currents in holographic models which involve N=4 SYM coupled to the finite density matter in the probe brane sector. We find the spectral density associated with the longitudinal response to be exhausted by the zero sound pole and argue that this could be consistent with the behavior of Fermi liquid with vanishing Fermi velocity. However the transversal response shows an unusual momentum independent behavior. Inclusion of magnetic field leads to a gap in the dispersion relation for the zero sound mode propagating in the plane of magnetic field. For small values of the magnetic field B the gap in the spectrum scales linearly with B, which is consistent with Kohn's theorem for nonrelativistic fermions with pairwise interaction. We do not find signatures of multiple Landau levels expected in Landau Fermi liquid theory. We also consider the influence of generic higher derivative corrections on the form of the spectral function.

S-parameter, Technimesons, and Phase Transitions in Holographic Tachyon DBI Models

We investigate some phenomenological aspects of the holographic models based on the tachyon Dirac-Born-Infeld action in the AdS space-time. These holographic theories model strongly interacting fermions and feature dynamical mass generation and symmetry breaking. We show that they can be viewed as models of holographic walking technicolor and compute the Peskin-Takeuchi S-parameter and masses of lightest technimesons for a variety of the tachyon potentials. We also investigate the phase structure at finite temperature and charge density. Finally, we comment on the holographic Wilsonian RG in the context of holographic tachyon DBI models.
