A model of persistent breaking of continuous symmetry

We consider a UV-complete field-theoretic model in general dimensions, including $d=2+1$, that exhibits spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetry, persisting to arbitrarily large temperatures. Our model consists of two copies of the long-range vector models, with $O(m)$ and $O(N-m)$ global symmetry groups, perturbed by double-trace operators. Using conformal perturbation theory we find weakly-coupled IR fixed points for $N\geq 6$ that reveal a spontaneous breaking of global symmetry. Namely, at finite temperature the lower rank group is broken, with the pattern persisting at all temperatures due to scale-invariance. We provide evidence that the models in question are unitary and invariant under full conformal symmetry. Our work generalizes recent results, which considered the particular case of $m=1$ and reported persistent breaking of the discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2=O(1)$. Furthermore, we show that this model exhibits a continuous family of weakly interacting field theories at finite $N$.

A model of persistent breaking of discrete symmetry

We show there exist UV-complete field-theoretic models in general dimension, including $2+1$, with the spontaneous breaking of a global symmetry, which persists to the arbitrarily high temperatures. Our example is a conformal vector model with the $O(N)\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry at zero temperature. Using conformal perturbation theory we establish $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is broken at finite temperature for $N>10$. Similar to recent constructions, in the infinite $N$ limit our model has a non-trivial conformal manifold, a moduli space of vacua, which gets deformed at finite temperature. Furthermore, in this regime the model admits a persistent breaking of $O(N)$ in $2+1$ dimensions, therefore providing another example where the Coleman-Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem can be bypassed.

The bi-conical vector model at $1/N$

We study finite $N$ aspects of the $O(m)\times O(N-m)$ vector model with quartic interactions in general $2\leq d \leq 6$ spacetime dimensions. This model has recently been shown to display the phenomenon of persistent symmetry breaking at a perturbative Wilson-Fisher-like fixed point in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. The large rank limit of the bi-conical model displays a conformal manifold and a moduli space of vacua. We find a set of three double trace scalar operators that are respectively irrelevant, relevant and marginal deformations of the conformal manifold in general $d$. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of the single and multi-trace scalar operators to the first sub-leading order in the large rank expansion. The anomalous dimension of the marginal operator does not vanish in general, indicating that the conformal manifold is lifted at finite $N$. In the case of equal ranks we are able to derive explicitly the scaling dimensions of various operators as functions of only $d$.

Integrability and Renormalization under $T \bar T$

Smirnov and Zamolodchikov recently introduced a new class of two-dimensional quantum field theories, defined through a differential change of any existing theory by the determinant of the energy-momentum tensor. From this $T\bar T$ flow equation one can find a simple expression for both the energy spectrum and the $S$-matrix of the $T\bar T$ deformed theories. Our goal is to find the renormalized Lagrangian of the $T\bar T$ deformed theories. In the context of the $T\bar T$ deformation of an integrable theory, the deformed theory is also integrable and, correspondingly, the $S$-matrix factorizes into two-to-two $S$-matrices. One may thus hope to be able to extract the renormalized Lagrangian from the $S$-matrix. We do this explicitly for the $T\bar T$ deformation of a free massive scalar, to second order in the deformation parameter. Once one has the renormalized Lagrangian one can, in principle, compute all other observables, such as correlation functions. We briefly discuss this, as well as the relation between the renormalized Lagrangian, the $T\bar T$ flow equation, and the $S$-matrix. We also mention a more general class of integrability-preserving deformations of a free scalar field theory.

Vector model in various dimensions

We study behaviour of the critical $O(N)$ vector model with quartic interaction in $2 \leq d \leq 6$ dimensions to the next-to-leading order in the large-$N$ expansion. We derive and perform consistency checks that provide an evidence for the existence of a non-trivial fixed point and explore the corresponding CFT. In particular, we use conformal techniques to calculate the multi-loop diagrams up to and including 4 loops in general dimension. These results are used to calculate a new CFT data associated with the three-point function of the Hubbard- Stratonovich field. In $6-ε$ dimensions our results match their counterparts obtained within a proposed alternative description of the model in terms of $N+1$ massless scalars with cubic interactions. In $d=3$ we find that the OPE coefficient vanishes up to $\mathcal{O}(1/N^{3/2})$ order.

Universality of fast quenches from the conformal perturbation theory

We consider global quantum quenches, a protocol when a continuous field theoretic system in the ground state is driven by a homogeneous time-dependent external interaction. When the typical inverse time scale of the interaction is much larger than all relevant scales except for the UV-cutoff the system's response exhibits universal scaling behavior. We provide both qualitative and quantitative explanations of this universality and argue that physics of the response during and shortly after the quench is governed by the conformal perturbation theory around the UV fixed point. We proceed to calculate the response of one and two-point correlation functions confirming and generalizing universal scalings found previously. Finally, we discuss late time behavior after the quench and argue that all local quantities will equilibrate to their thermal values specified by an excess energy acquired by the system during the quench.

Dynamics of the Area Law of Entanglement Entropy

We study the evolution of the universal area law of entanglement entropy when the Hamiltonian of the system undergoes a time dependent perturbation. In particular, we derive a general formula for the time dependent first order correction to the area law under the assumption that the field theory resides in a vacuum state when a small time-dependent perturbation of a relevant coupling constant is turned on. Using this formula, we carry out explicit calculations in free field theories deformed by a time dependent mass, whereas for a generic QFT we show that the time dependent first order correction is governed by the spectral function defining the two-point correlation function of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We also carry out holographic calculations based on the HRT proposal and find qualitative and, in certain cases, quantitative agreement with the field theory calculations.

Rényi entropy and conformal defects

We propose a field theoretic framework for calculating the dependence of Rényi entropies on the shape of the entangling surface in a conformal field theory. Our approach rests on regarding the corresponding twist operator as a conformal defect and in particular, we define the displacement operator which implements small local deformations of the entangling surface. We identify a simple constraint between the coefficient defining the two-point function of the displacement operator and the conformal weight of the twist operator, which consolidates a number of distinct conjectures on the shape dependence of the Rényi entropy. As an example, using this approach, we examine a conjecture regarding the universal coefficient associated with a conical singularity in the entangling surface for CFTs in any number of spacetime dimensions. We also provide a general formula for the second order variation of the Rényi entropy arising from small deformations of a spherical entangling surface, extending Mezei's results for the entanglement entropy.

Entanglement and RG in the $O(N)$ vector model

We consider the large $N$ interacting vector $O(N)$ model on a sphere in $4-ε$ Euclidean dimensions. The Gaussian theory in the UV is taken to be either conformally or non-conformally coupled. The endpoint of the RG flow corresponds to a conformally coupled scalar field at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point. We take a spherical entangling surface in de Sitter space and compute the entanglement entropy everywhere along the RG trajectory. In $4$ dimensions, a free non-conformal scalar has a universal area term scaling with the logarithm of the UV cutoff. In $4-ε$ dimensions, such a term scales as $1/ε$. For a non-conformal scalar, a $1/ε$ term is present both at the UV fixed point, and its vicinity. For flow between two conformal fixed points, $1/ε$ terms are absent everywhere. Finally, we make contact with replica trick calculations. The conical singularity gives rise to boundary terms residing on the entangling surface, which are usually discarded. Consistency with our results requires they be kept. We argue that, in fact, this conclusion also follows from the work of Metlitski, Fuertes, and Sachdev, which demonstrated that such boundary terms will be generated through quantum corrections.

Entanglement Entropy for Relevant and Geometric Perturbations

We continue the study of entanglement entropy for a QFT through a perturbative expansion of the path integral definition of the reduced density matrix. The universal entanglement entropy for a CFT perturbed by a relevant operator is calculated to second order in the coupling. We also explore the geometric dependence of entanglement entropy for a deformed planar entangling surface, finding surprises at second order.

Renormalization group flow of entanglement entropy on spheres

We explore entanglement entropy of a cap-like region for a generic quantum field theory residing in the Bunch-Davies vacuum on de Sitter space. Entanglement entropy in our setup is identical with the thermal entropy in the static patch of de Sitter, and we derive a simple relation between the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor trace and the RG flow of entanglement entropy. In particular, renormalization of the cosmological constant and logarithmic divergence of the entanglement entropy are interrelated in our setup. We confirm our findings by recovering known universal contributions for a free field theory deformed by a mass operator as well as obtain correct universal behaviour at the fixed points. Simple examples of entanglement entropy flows are elaborated in $d=2,3,4$. In three dimensions we find that while the renormalized entanglement entropy is stationary at the fixed points, it is not monotonic. We provide a computational evidence that the universal `area law' for a conformally coupled scalar is different from the known result in the literature, and argue that this difference survives in the limit of flat space. Finally, we carry out the spectral decomposition of entanglement entropy flow and discuss its application to the F-theorem.

Correlation functions on conical defects

We explore the new technique developed recently in \cite{Rosenhaus:2014woa} and suggest a correspondence between the $N$-point correlation functions on spacetime with conical defects and the $(N+1)$-point correlation functions in regular Minkowski spacetime. This correspondence suggests a new systematic way to evaluate the correlation functions on spacetimes with conical defects. We check the correspondence for the expectation value of a scalar operator and of the energy momentum tensor in a conformal field theory and obtain the exact agreement with the earlier derivations for cosmic string spacetime. We then use this correspondence and do the computations for a generic scalar operator and a conserved vector current. For generic unitary field theory we compute the expectation value of the energy momentum tensor using the known spectral representation of the $2$-point correlators of stress-energy tensor in Minkowski spacetime.

Entanglement Entropy Flow and the Ward Identity

We derive differential equations for the flow of entanglement entropy as a function of the metric and the couplings of the theory. The variation of the universal part of entanglement entropy under a local Weyl transformation is related to the variation under a local change in the couplings. We show that this relation is in fact equivalent to the trace Ward identity. As a concrete application of our formalism, we express the entanglement entropy for massive free fields as a two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor.

Entanglement entropy, planar surfaces, and spectral functions

We consider the universal part of entanglement entropy across a plane in flat space for a QFT, giving a non-perturbative expression in terms of a spectral function. We study the change in entanglement entropy under a deformation by a relevant operator, providing a pertrubative expansion where the terms are correlation functions in the undeformed theory. The entanglement entropy for free massive fermions and scalars easily follows. Finally, we study entanglement entropy across a plane in a background geometry that is a deformation of flat space, finding new universal terms arising from mixing of geometry and couplings of the QFT.

Entanglement Entropy: A Perturbative Calculation

We provide a framework for a perturbative evaluation of the reduced density matrix. The method is based on a path integral in the analytically continued spacetime. It suggests an alternative to the holographic and `standard' replica trick calculations of entanglement entropy. We implement this method within solvable field theory examples to evaluate leading order corrections induced by small perturbations in the geometry of the background and entangling surface. Our findings are in accord with Solodukhin's formula for the universal term of entanglement entropy for four dimensional CFTs.

Twist operators in higher dimensions

We study twist operators in higher dimensional CFT's. In particular, we express their conformal dimension in terms of the energy density for the CFT in a particular thermal ensemble. We construct an expansion of the conformal dimension in power series around n=1, with n being replica parameter. We show that the coefficients in this expansion are determined by higher point correlations of the energy-momentum tensor. In particular, the first and second terms, i.e. the first and second derivatives of the scaling dimension, have a simple universal form. We test these results using holography and free field theory computations, finding agreement in both cases. We also consider the `operator product expansion' of spherical twist operators and finally, we examine the behaviour of correlators of twist operators with other operators in the limit n ->1.

(Non) supersymmetric quantum quenches

We explore supersymmetric quantum quenches of the mass and coupling constants in the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric vector model using Hartee-Fock approximation. We find that in the case of the free fermionic field, quench of the mass generates singularity localized at the instant of sudden change and we point out the essential role of the parity of spacetime. Focusing on a supersymmetric generalization of the $ϕ^6$ model and using stationary phase approximation, we demonstrate that supersymmetry is broken in the asymptotic state that emerges at late times after the quench. Finally, we confirm SUSY breaking in the time-dependent setting by integrating numerically the exact equations of motion from the instant of the quench into asymptotic regime. We argue that the breaking of supersymmetry cannot be attributed to the thermal physics since to leading order in the Hartee-Fock approximation the final state is not thermal.

On Spacetime Entanglement

We examine the idea that in quantum gravity, the entanglement entropy of a general region should be finite and the leading contribution is given by the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. Using holographic entanglement entropy calculations, we show that this idea is realized in the Randall-Sundrum II braneworld for sufficiently large regions in smoothly curved backgrounds. Extending the induced gravity action on the brane to include the curvature-squared interactions, we show that the Wald entropy closely matches the expression describing the entanglement entropy. The difference is that for a general region, the latter includes terms involving the extrinsic curvature of the entangling surface, which do not appear in the Wald entropy. We also consider various limitations on the validity of these results.

Dual description of a 4d cosmology

M-theory compactified on S^7/Z_k allows for a four-dimensional, asymptotically AdS cosmology. The holographic dual consists of ABJM theory with a non-supersymmetric marginal deformation. At weak 't Hooft coupling the dual theory possesses a UV fixed point, allowing the construction of a conformal field theory dual. The dual theory has an infinite family of instantons, which we are able to sum completely. The resulting theory spontaneously breaks global conformal symmetry but is manifestly unitary and non-singular. Our findings point to a holographic resolution of the singularity, measure and conformal factor problems in quantum cosmology.

Modification of late time phase structure by quantum quenches

The consequences of the sudden change in the coupling constants (quenches) on the phase structure of the theory at late times are explored. We study in detail the three dimensional phi^6 model in the large N limit, and show that the phi^6 coupling enjoys a widened range of stability compared to the static scenario. Moreover, a new massive phase emerges, which for sufficiently large coupling becomes the dominant vacuum. We argue that these novel phenomena cannot be described by a simple thermalization effect or the emergence of a single effective temperature.

Observations on entanglement entropy in massive QFT's

We identify various universal contributions to the entanglement entropy for massive free fields. As well as the `area' terms found in [1], we find other geometric contributions of the form discussed in [2]. We also compute analogous contributions for a strongly coupled field theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this case, we find the results for strong and weak coupling do not agree.

Black hole stereotyping: Induced gravito-static polarization

We discuss the black hole effective action and define its static subsector. We determine the induced gravito-static polarization constants (electric Love numbers) of static black holes (Schwarzschild) in an arbitrary dimension, namely the induced mass multipole as a result of an external gravitational field. We demonstrate that in 4d these constants vanish thereby settling a disagreement in the literature. Yet in higher dimensions these constants are non-vanishing, thereby disproving (at least in d>4) speculations that black holes have no effective couplings beyond the point particle action. In particular, when l/(d-3) is half integral these constants demonstrate a (classical) renormalization flow consistent with the divergences of the effective field theory. In some other cases the constants are negative indicating a novel non-spherical instability. The theory of hypergeometric functions plays a central role.

Comparing space+time decompositions in the post-Newtonian limit

The relationship between the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) field decomposition and the non-relativistic gravitational (NRG) fields attracted considerable interest recently. This paper compares the two, especially with respect to computing the two-body post-Newtonian (PN) effective action within the effective field theory (EFT) approach. Both are space+time decompositions and hence do better than using the standard metric. However, ADM is essentially a reduction over space whereas NRG is essentially a reduction over time. We use a variant of ADM which is linearly equivalent to NRG and the two are identical at order 1PN. We compare the two at order 2PN and find that ADM requires the computation of an additional Feynman diagram. We argue that the computational excess will further increase at higher orders.

Holographic Calculations of Renyi Entropy

We extend the approach of Casini, Huerta and Myers to a new calculation of the Renyi entropy of a general CFT in d dimensions with a spherical entangling surface, in terms of certain thermal partition functions. We apply this approach to calculate the Renyi entropy in various holographic models. Our results indicate that in general, the Renyi entropy will be a complicated nonlinear function of the central charges and other parameters which characterize the CFT. We also exhibit the relation between this new thermal calculation and a conventional calculation of the Renyi entropy where a twist operator is inserted on the spherical entangling surface. The latter insight also allows us to calculate the scaling dimension of the twist operators in the holographic models.

On Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Higher Curvature Gravity

We examine holographic entanglement entropy with higher curvature gravity in the bulk. We show that in general Wald's formula for horizon entropy does not yield the correct entanglement entropy. However, for Lovelock gravity, there is an alternate prescription which involves only the intrinsic curvature of the bulk surface. We verify that this prescription correctly reproduces the universal contribution to the entanglement entropy for CFT's in four and six dimensions. We also make further comments on gravitational theories with more general higher curvature interactions.

On the dynamical generation of the Maxwell term and scale invariance

Gauge theories with no Maxwell term are investigated in various setups. The dynamical generation of the Maxwell term is correlated to the scale invariance properties of the system. This is discussed mainly in the cases where the gauge coupling carries dimensions. The term is generated when the theory contains a scale explicitly, when it is asymptotically free and in particular also when the scale invariance is spontaneously broken. The terms are not generated when the scale invariance is maintained. Examples studied include the large $N$ limit of the $CP^{N-1}$ model in $(2+ε)$ dimensions, a 3D gauged $ϕ^6$ vector model and its supersymmetric extension. In the latter case the generation of the Maxwell term at a fixed point is explored. The phase structure of the $d=3$ case is investigated in the presence of a Chern-Simons term as well. In the supersymmetric $ϕ^6$ model the emergence of the Maxwell term is accompanied by the dynamical generation of the Chern-Simons term and its multiplet and dynamical breaking of the parity symmetry. In some of the phases long range forces emerge which may result in logarithmic confinement. These include a dilaton exchange which plays a role also in the case when the theory has no gauge symmetry. Gauged Lagrangian realizations of the 2D coset models do not lead to emergent Maxwell terms. We discuss a case where the gauge symmetry is anomalous.

Some Calculable Contributions to Holographic Entanglement Entropy

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we examine entanglement entropy for a boundary theory deformed by a relevant operator and establish two results. The first is that if there is a contribution which is logarithmic in the UV cut-off, then the coefficient of this term is independent of the state of the boundary theory. In fact, the same is true of all of the coefficients of contributions which diverge as some power of the UV cut-off. Secondly, we show that the relevant deformation introduces new logarithmic contributions to the entanglement entropy. The form of some of these new contributions is similar to that found recently in an investigation of entanglement entropy in a free massive scalar field theory [1].

Caged black hole thermodynamics: Charge, the extremal limit, and finite size effects

We extend the effective field theory treatment of the thermodynamics of small compactified black holes to the case of charged black holes. The relevant thermodynamic quantities are computed to second order in the parameter λ\sim(r_0/L)^(d-3). We discuss how the addition of charge to a caged black hole may delay the phase transition to a black string. In the extremal limit, we construct an exact black hole solution which serves as a check for our perturbative results. Finite size effects are also included through higher order operators in the worldline action. We calculate how the thermodynamic quantities are modified in the presence of these operators, and show they enter beyond order λ^2 as in the uncharged case. Finally, we use the exact solution to constrain the Wilson coefficients of the finite size operators in the extremal limit.

Dressing the Post-Newtonian two-body problem and Classical Effective Field Theory

We apply a dressed perturbation theory to better organize and economize the computation of high orders of the 2-body effective action of an inspiralling Post-Newtonian gravitating binary. We use the effective field theory approach with the non-relativistic field decomposition (NRG fields). For that purpose we develop quite generally the dressing theory of a non-linear classical field theory coupled to point-like sources. We introduce dressed charges and propagators, but unlike the quantum theory there are no dressed bulk vertices. The dressed quantities are found to obey recursive integral equations which succinctly encode parts of the diagrammatic expansion, and are the classical version of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Actually, the classical equations are somewhat stronger since they involve only finitely many quantities, unlike the quantum theory. Classical diagrams are shown to factorize exactly when they contain non-linear world-line vertices, and we classify all the possible topologies of irreducible diagrams for low loop numbers. We apply the dressing program to our Post-Newtonian case of interest. The dressed charges consist of the dressed energy-momentum tensor after a non-relativistic decomposition, and we compute all dressed charges (in the harmonic gauge) appearing up to 2PN in the 2-body effective action (and more). We determine the irreducible skeleton diagrams up to 3PN and we employ the dressed charges to compute several terms beyond 2PN.

On rolling, tunneling and decaying in some large N vector models

Various aspects of time-dependent processes are studied within the large N approximation of O(N) vector models in three dimensions. These include the rolling of fields, the tunneling and decay of vacua. We present an exact solution for the quantum conformal case and find a solution for more general potentials when the total change of the value of the field is small. Characteristic times are found to be shorter when the time dependence of the field is taken into account in constructing the exact large N effective potentials. We show that the different approximations yield the same answers in the regions of the overlap of the validity. A numerical solution of this potential reveals a tunneling in which the bubble that separates the true vacuum from the false one is thick.
