Hirschman-Widder densities

Hirschman and Widder introduced a class of Pólya frequency functions given by linear combinations of one-sided exponential functions. The members of this class are probability densities, and the class is closed under convolution but not under pointwise multiplication. We show that, generically, a polynomial function of such a density is a Pólya frequency function only if the polynomial is a homothety, and also identify a subclass for which each positive-integer power is a Pólya frequency function. We further demonstrate connections between the Maclaurin coefficients, the moments of these densities, and the recovery of the density from finitely many moments, via Schur polynomials.

Preservers of totally positive kernels and Polya frequency functions

Fractional powers and polynomial maps preserving structured totally positive matrices, one-sided Polya frequency functions, or totally positive kernels are treated from a unifying perspective. Besides the stark rigidity of the polynomial transforms, we unveil an ubiquitous separation between discrete and continuous spectra of such inner fractional powers. Classical works of Schoenberg, Karlin, Hirschman, and Widder are completed by our classification. Concepts of probability theory, multivariate statistics, and group representation theory naturally enter into the picture.

An extremal problem arising in the dynamics of two-phase materials that directly reveals information about the internal geometry

In two phase materials, each phase having a non-local response in time, it has been found that for some driving fields the response somehow untangles at specific times, and allows one to directly infer useful information about the geometry of the material, such as the volume fractions of the phases. Motivated by this, and to obtain an algorithm for designing appropriate driving fields, we find approximate, measure independent, linear relations between the values that Markov functions take at a given set of possibly complex points, not belonging to the interval [-1,1] where the measure is supported. The problem is reduced to simply one of polynomial approximation of a given function on the interval [-1,1] and to simplify the analysis Chebyshev approximation is used. This allows one to obtain explicit estimates of the error of the approximation, in terms of the number of points and the minimum distance of the points to the interval [-1,1]. Assuming this minimum distance is bounded below by a number greater than 1/2, the error converges exponentially to zero as the number of points is increased. Approximate linear relations are also obtained that incorporate a set of moments of the measure. In the context of the motivating problem, the analysis also yields bounds on the response at any particular time for any driving field, and allows one to estimate the response at a given frequency using an appropriately designed driving field that effectively is turned on only for a fixed interval of time. The approximation extends directly to Markov-type functions with a positive semidefinite operator valued measure, and this has applications to determining the shape of an inclusion in a body from boundary flux measurements at a specific time, when the time-dependent boundary potentials are suitably tailored.

Moment-sequence transforms

We classify all functions which, when applied term by term, leave invariant the sequences of moments of positive measures on the real line. Rather unexpectedly, these functions are built of absolutely monotonic components, or reflections of them, with possible discontinuities at the endpoints. Even more surprising is the fact that functions preserving moments of three point masses must preserve moments of all measures. Our proofs exploit the semidefiniteness of the associated Hankel matrices and the complete monotonicity of the Laplace transforms of the underlying measures. As a byproduct, we characterize the entrywise transforms which preserve totally non-negative Hankel matrices, and those which preserve all totally non-negative matrices. The latter class is surprisingly rigid: such maps must be constant or linear. We also examine transforms in the multivariable setting, which reveals a new class of piecewise absolutely monotonic functions.

Complex symmetric evolution equations

We study certain dynamical systems which leave invariant an indefinite quadratic form via semigroups or evolution families of complex symmetric Hilbert space operators. In the setting of bounded operators we show that a $\mathcal{C}$-selfadjoint operator generates a contraction $C_0$-semigroup if and only if it is dissipative. In addition, we examine the abstract Cauchy problem for nonautonomous linear differential equations possessing a complex symmetry. In the unbounded operator framework we isolate the class of \emph{complex symmetric, unbounded semigroups} and investigate Stone-type theorems adapted to them. On Fock space realization, we characterize all $\mathcal{C}$-selfadjoint, unbounded weighted composition semigroups. As a byproduct we prove that the generator of a $\mathcal{C}$-selfadjoint, unbounded semigroup is not necessarily $\mathcal{C}$-selfadjoint.

Data analysis from empirical moments and the Christoffel function

Spectral features of the empirical moment matrix constitute a resourceful tool for unveiling properties of a cloud of points, among which, density, support and latent structures. It is already well known that the empirical moment matrix encodes a great deal of subtle attributes of the underlying measure. Starting from this object as base of observations we combine ideas from statistics, real algebraic geometry, orthogonal polynomials and approximation theory for opening new insights relevant for Machine Learning (ML) problems with data supported on singular sets. Refined concepts and results from real algebraic geometry and approximation theory are empowering a simple tool (the empirical moment matrix) for the task of solving non-trivial questions in data analysis. We provide (1) theoretical support, (2) numerical experiments and, (3) connections to real world data as a validation of the stamina of the empirical moment matrix approach.

Moment estimates of the cloud of a planar measure

With a proper function theoretic definition of the {\it cloud} of a positive measure with compact support in the real plane, a computational scheme of transforming the moments of the original measure into the moments of the uniformly distributed mass on the cloud is described. The main limiting operation involves exclusively truncated Christoffel-Darboux kernels, while error bounds depend on the spectral asymptotics of a Hankel kernel belonging to the Hilbert-Schmidt class.

Spectral analysis of Neumann-Poincaré operator

This is a survey of accumulated spectral analysis observations spanning more than a century, referring to the double layer potential integral equation, also known as Neumann-Poincaré operator. The very notion of spectral analysis has evolved along this path. Indeed, the quest for solving this specific singular integral equation, originally aimed at elucidating classical potential theory problems, has inspired and shaped the development of theoretical spectral analysis of linear transforms in XX-th century. We briefly touch some marking discoveries into the subject, with ample bibliographical references to both old, sometimes forgotten, texts and new contributions. It is remarkable that applications of the spectral analysis of the Neumann-Poincaré operator are still uncovered nowadays, with spectacular impacts on applied science. A few modern ramifications along these lines are depicted in our survey.

Spectral dissection of finite rank perturbations of normal operators

Finite rank perturbations $T=N+K$ of a bounded normal operator $N$ on a separable Hilbert space are studied thanks to a natural functional model of $T$; in its turn the functional model solely relies on a perturbation matrix/ characteristic function previously defined by the second author. Function theoretic features of this perturbation matrix encode in a closed-form the spectral behavior of $T$. Under mild geometric conditions on the spectral measure of $N$ and some smoothness constraints on $K$ we show that the operator $T$ admits invariant subspaces, or even it is decomposable.

The moment problem on curves with bumps

The power moments of a positive measure on the real line or the circle are characterized by the non-negativity of an infinite matrix, Hankel, respectively Toeplitz, attached to the data. Except some fortunate configurations, in higher dimensions there are no non-negativity criteria for the power moments of a measure to be supported by a prescribed closed set. We combine two well studied fortunate situations, specifically a class of curves in two dimensions classified by Scheiderer and Plaumann, and compact, basic semi-algebraic sets, with the aim at enlarging the realm of geometric shapes on which the power moment problem is accessible and solvable by non-negativity certificates.

Total-positivity preservers

We prove that the only entrywise transforms of rectangular matrices which preserve total positivity or total non-negativity are either constant or linear. This follows from an extended classification of preservers of these two properties for matrices of fixed dimension. We also prove that the same assertions hold upon working only with symmetric matrices; for total-positivity preservers our proofs proceed through solving two totally positive completion problems.

Matrix positivity preservers in fixed dimension. I

A classical theorem proved in 1942 by I.J. Schoenberg describes all real-valued functions that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to positive semidefinite matrices of arbitrary size; such functions are necessarily analytic with non-negative Taylor coefficients. Despite the great deal of interest generated by this theorem, a characterization of functions preserving positivity for matrices of fixed dimension is not known. In this paper, we provide a complete description of polynomials of degree $N$ that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to matrices of dimension $N$. This is the key step for us then to obtain negative lower bounds on the coefficients of analytic functions so that these functions preserve positivity in a prescribed dimension. The proof of the main technical inequality is representation theoretic, and employs the theory of Schur polynomials. Interpreted in the context of linear pencils of matrices, our main results provide a closed-form expression for the lowest critical value, revealing at the same time an unexpected spectral discontinuity phenomenon. Tight linear matrix inequalities for Hadamard powers of matrices and a sharp asymptotic bound for the matrix-cube problem involving Hadamard powers are obtained as applications. Positivity preservers are also naturally interpreted as solutions of a variational inequality involving generalized Rayleigh quotients. This optimization approach leads to a novel description of the simultaneous kernels of Hadamard powers, and a family of stratifications of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices.

Schur polynomials and matrix positivity preservers

A classical result by Schoenberg (1942) identifies all real-valued functions that preserve positive semidefiniteness (psd) when applied entrywise to matrices of arbitrary dimension. Schoenberg's work has continued to attract significant interest, including renewed recent attention due to applications in high-dimensional statistics. However, despite a great deal of effort in the area, an effective characterization of entrywise functions preserving positivity in a fixed dimension remains elusive to date. As a first step, we characterize new classes of polynomials preserving positivity in fixed dimension. The proof of our main result is representation theoretic, and employs Schur polynomials. An alternate, variational approach also leads to several interesting consequences including (a) a hitherto unexplored Schubert cell-type stratification of the cone of psd matrices, (b) new connections between generalized Rayleigh quotients of Hadamard powers and Schur polynomials, and (c) a description of the joint kernels of Hadamard powers.

Shape reconstruction of nanoparticles from their associated plasmonic resonances

We prove by means of a couple of examples that plasmonic resonances can be used on one hand to classify shapes of nanoparticles with real algebraic boundaries and on the other hand to reconstruct the separation distance between two nanoparticles from measurements of their first collective plasmonic resonances. To this end, we explicitly compute the spectral decompositions of the Neumann-Poincaré operators associated with a class of quadrature domains and two nearly touching disks. Numerical results are included in support of our main findings.

The essential spectrum of the Neumann--Poincare operator on a domain with corners

Exploiting the homogeneous structure of a wedge in the complex plane, we compute the spectrum of the anti-linear Ahlfors-Beurling transform acting on the associated Bergman space. Consequently, the similarity equivalence between the Ahlfors-Beurling transform and the Neumann-Poincare operator provides the spectrum of the latter integral operator on a wedge. A localization technique and conformal mapping lead to the first complete description of the essential spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator on a planar domain with corners, with respect to the energy norm of the associated harmonic field.

Conditioning moments of singular measures for entropy maximization II: Numerical examples

If moments of singular measures are passed as inputs to the entropy maximization procedure, the optimization algorithm might not terminate. The framework developed in our previous paper demonstrated how input moments of measures, on a broad range of domains, can be conditioned to ensure convergence of the entropy maximization. Here we numerically illustrate the developed framework on simplest possible examples: measures with one-dimensional, bounded supports. Three examples of measures are used to numerically compare approximations obtained through entropy maximization with and without the conditioning step.

An Algebraic Perspective on Multivariate Tight Wavelet Frames. II

Continuing our recent work we study polynomial masks of multivariate tight wavelet frames from two additional and complementary points of view: convexity and system theory. We consider such polynomial masks that are derived by means of the unitary extension principle from a single polynomial. We show that the set of such polynomials is convex and reveal its extremal points as polynomials that satisfy the quadrature mirror filter condition. Multiplicative structure of such polynomial sets allows us to improve the known upper bounds on the number of frame generators derived from box splines. In the univariate and bivariate settings, the polynomial masks of a tight wavelet frame can be interpreted as the transfer function of a conservative multivariate linear system. Recent advances in system theory enable us to develop a more effective method for tight frame constructions. Employing an example by S. W. Drury, we show that for dimension greater than 2 such transfer function representations of the corresponding polynomial masks do not always exist. However, for wavelet masks derived from multivariate polynomials with non-negative coefficients, we determine explicit transfer function representations. We illustrate our results with several examples.

Mathematical and physical aspects of complex symmetric operators

Recent advances in the theory of complex symmetric operators are presented and related to current studies in non-hermitian quantum mechanics. The main themes of the survey are: the structure of complex symmetric operators, $C$-selfadjoint extensions of $C$-symmetric unbounded operators, resolvent estimates, reality of spectrum, bases of $C$-orthonormal vectors, and conjugate-linear symmetric operators. The main results are complemented by a variety of natural examples arising in field theory, quantum physics, and complex variables.

Reconstruction of algebraic-exponential data from moments

Let $G$ be a bounded open subset of Euclidean space with real algebraic boundary $Γ$. Under the assumption that the degree $d$ of $Γ$ is given, and the power moments of the Lebesgue measure on $G$ are known up to order $3d$, we describe an algorithmic procedure for obtaining a polynomial vanishing on $Γ$. The particular case of semi-algebraic sets defined by a single polynomial inequality raises an intriguing question related to the finite determinateness of the full moment sequence. The more general case of a measure with density equal to the exponential of a polynomial is treated in parallel. Our approach relies on Stokes theorem and simple Hankel-type matrix identities.

A real algebra perspective on multivariate tight wavelet frames

Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affirmatively the long standing open question of the existence of such tight wavelet frames in dimension $d=2$; we also provide numerically efficient methods for checking their existence and actual construction in any dimension. We exhibit a class of counterexamples in dimension $d=3$ showing that, in general, the UEP property is not sufficient for the existence of tight wavelet frames. On the other hand we provide stronger sufficient conditions for the existence of tight wavelet frames in dimension $d > 3$ and illustrate our results by several examples.

Conditioning moments of singular measures for entropy optimization. I

In order to process a potential moment sequence by the entropy optimization method one has to be assured that the original measure is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We propose a non-linear exponential transform of the moment sequence of any measure, including singular ones, so that the entropy optimization method can still be used in the reconstruction or approximation of the original. The Cauchy transform in one variable, used for this very purpose in a classical context by A.\ A.\ Markov and followers, is replaced in higher dimensions by the Fantappiè transform. Several algorithms for reconstruction from moments are sketched, while we intend to provide the numerical experiments and computational aspects in a subsequent article. The essentials of complex analysis, harmonic analysis, and entropy optimization are recalled in some detail, with the goal of making the main results more accessible to non-expert readers. Keywords: Fantappiè transform; entropy optimization; moment problem; tube domain; exponential transform

Spectral bounds for the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners

The boundary double layer potential, or the Neumann-Poincare operator, is studied on the Sobolev space of order 1/2 along the boundary, coinciding with the space of charges giving rise to double layer potentials with finite energy in the whole space. Poincare's program of studying the spectrum of the boundary double layer potential is developed in complete generality, on closed Lipschitz hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. Furthermore, the Neumann-Poincare operator is realized as a singular integral transform bearing similarities to the Beurling-Ahlfors transform in 2D. As an application, bounds for the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator are derived from recent results in quasi-conformal mapping theory, in the case of planar curves with corners.

Borcea's variance conjectures on the critical points of polynomials

Closely following recent ideas of J. Borcea, we discuss various modifications and relaxations of Sendov's conjecture about the location of critical points of a polynomial with complex coefficients. The resulting open problems are formulated in terms of matrix theory, mathematical statistics or potential theory. Quite a few links between classical works in the geometry of polynomials and recent advances in the location of spectra of small rank perturbations of structured matrices are established. A couple of simple examples provide natural and sometimes sharp bounds for the proposed conjectures.

Reducing subspaces for analytic multipliers of the Bergman space

We answer affirmatively the problem left open in \cite{DSZ,GSZZ} and prove that for a finite Blaschke product $ϕ$, the minimal reducing subspaces of the Bergman space multiplier $M_ϕ$ are pairwise orthogonal and their number is equal to the number $q$ of connected components of the Riemann surface of $ϕ^{-1}\circ ϕ$. In particular, the double commutant $\{M_ϕ,M_ϕ^\ast\}'$ is abelian of dimension $q$. An analytic/arithmetic description of the minimal reducing subspaces of $M_ϕ$ is also provided, along with a list of all possible cases in degree of $ϕ$ equal to eight.

Positivity and optimization for semi-algebraic functions

We describe algebraic certificates of positivity for functions belonging to a finitely generated algebra of Borel measurable functions, with particular emphasis to algebras generated by semi-algebraic functions. In which case the standard global optimization problem with constraints given by elements of the same algebra is reduced via a natural change of variables to the better understood case of polynomial optimization. A collection of simple examples and numerical experiments complement the theoretical parts of the article.

Solving moment problems by dimensional extension

The first part of this paper is devoted to an analysis of moment problems in R^n with supports contained in a closed set defined by finitely many polynomial inequalities. The second part of the paper uses the representation results of positive functionals on certain spaces of rational functions developed in the first part, for decomposing a polynomial which is positive on such a semi-algebraic set into a canonical sum of squares of rational functions times explicit multipliers.

Extremal solutions of the two-dimensional $L$-problem of moments, II

All extremal solutions of the truncated $L$-problem of moments in two real variables , with support contained in a given compact set, are described as characteristic functions of semi-algebraic sets given by a single polynomial inequality. An exponential kernel, arising as the determinantal function of a naturally associated hyponormal operator with rank-one self-commutator, provides a natural defining function for these semi-algebraic sets. We find an intrinsic characterization of this kernel and we describe a series of analytic continuation properties of it which are closely related to the behaviour of the Schwarz reflection function in portions of the boundary of the extremal supporting set.
