Reconstructing Mimetic Cosmology

We explore the mimetic gravity formulation with the inclusion of a scalar field potential namely, $V(ϕ)$. However, we are not considering any {\it a priori} specific form this term. By means of the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization for the parameter state of the fluid we can construct an explicit function for such potential in terms of the cosmological redshift and obtain analytical solutions in the mimetic gravity approach. We revise some cosmological implications of these results and additionally we perform a numerical reconstruction for the potential $V$ as a function of the mimetic scalar field, $ϕ$.

Challenging matter creation models in the phantom divide

We perform a study both statistical and theoretical for cosmological models of matter creation and their ability to describe effective phantom models of dark energy. Such models are beyond the $Λ$CDM model since the resulting cosmic expansion is not adiabatic. In fact, we show that this approach exhibits transient phantom/quintessence scenarios at present time and tends to the standard cosmological model at some stage of the cosmic evolution. We discuss some generalities of the thermodynamics properties for this type of cosmological model; we emphasize on the behavior of the temperature associated to dark matter, which keeps positive along cosmic evolution together with the entropy. The enrichment of this type of model by means of the incorporation of cosmological constant and dissipative effects in the fluid description to explore their cosmological consequences in the expansion of the universe is considered. Finally, a generalization for the matter production rate as an inhomogeneous expression of the Hubble parameter and its derivatives is discussed; as in all the cases examined, such election leads to an effective phantom/quintessence behavior.

Cosmic expansion with matter creation and bulk viscosity

We explore the cosmological implications at effective level of matter creation effects in a dissipative fluid for a FLRW geometry; we also perform a statistical analysis for this kind of model. By considering an inhomogeneous Ansatz for the particle production rate we obtain that for created matter of dark matter type we can have a quintessence scenario or a future singularity known as little rip; in dependence of the value of a constant parameter, $η$, which characterizes the matter production effects. The dimensionless age of this kind of Universe is computed, showing that this number is greater than the standard cosmology value, this is typical of universes with presence of dark energy. The inclusion of baryonic matter is studied. By implementing the construction of the particle production rate for a dissipative fluid by considering two approaches for the expression of the bulk viscous pressure; we find that in Eckart model we have a big rip singularity leading to a catastrophic matter production and in the truncated version of the Israel-Stewart model such rate remains bounded leading to a quintessence scenario. For a non adiabatic dissipative fluid, we obtain a positive temperature and the cosmic expansion obeys the second law of thermodynamics.

Modeling holographic dark energy with particle and future horizons

In this work we explore some cosmological properties coming from the particle and future horizons when are considered as candidates to model the dark energy sector within a holographic context in a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe; we focus on some thermodynamics characteristics of the resulting dark energy scenario. Within the interacting scheme for cosmological fluids we obtain that in the dark sector, the dark energy fluid will always have negative entropy production and additionally, the positivity for the entropy and temperature can not be guaranteed simultaneously; this result holds for both horizons. However, this last issue can be solved if chemical potential is introduced in the thermodynamics description. For the non interacting approach, we obtain similar results as those of the single fluid description for the entropy behavior. We also find that the model admits a genuine big rip singularity when the dark energy density is sketched by the future horizon, in consequence the resulting parameter state can cross to the phantom regime. For the particle horizon case the cosmological fluid can emulate ordinary matter and the coincidence parameter has a decreasing behavior when the future horizon is elected.

Non-zero torsion and late cosmology

In this work, we study some thermodynamical aspects associated with torsion in a flat FLRW spacetime cosmic evolution. By implementing two Ansatze for the torsion term, we find that the model admits a phantom regime or a quintessence behavior. This scheme differs from the $Λ$CDM model at the thermodynamical level. The resulting cosmic expansion is not adiabatic, the fulfillment of the second law of thermodynamics requires a positive torsion term, and the temperature of the cosmic fluid is always positive. The entropy of the torsion phantom scenario is negative, but introducing chemical potential solves this issue. For a Dirac-Milne type Universe, the torsion leads to a growing behavior for the temperature of the fluid but has no incidence on the rate of expansion.

Covariant approach of perturbations in Lovelock type brane gravity

We develop a covariant scheme to describe the dynamics of small perturbations on Lovelock type extended objects propagating in a flat Minkowski spacetime. The higher-dimensional analogue of the Jacobi equation in this theory becomes a wave type equation for a scalar field $Φ$. Whithin this framework, we analyse the stability of membranes with a de Sitter geometry where we find that the Jacobi equation specializes to a Klein-Gordon (KG) equation for $Φ$ possessing a tachyonic mass. This shows that, to some extent, these type of extended objects share the symmetries of the Dirac-Nambu-Goto (DNG) action which is by no means coincidental because the DNG model is the simplest included in this type of gravity.

Hamiltonian analysis for linearly acceleration-dependent Lagrangians

We study the constrained Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework for the equations of motion provided by mechanical systems described by second-order derivative actions with a linear dependence in the accelerations. We stress out the peculiar features provided by the surface terms arising for this type of theories and we discuss some important properties for this kind of actions in order to pave the way for the construction of a well defned quantum counterpart by means of canonical methods. In particular, we analyse in detail the constraint structure for these theories and its relation to the inherent conserved quantities where the associated energies together with a Noether charge may be identifed. The constraint structure is fully analyzed without the introduction of auxiliary variables, as proposed in recent works involving higher order Lagrangians. Finally, we also provide some examples where our approach is explicitly applied and emphasize the way in which our original arrangement results in propitious for the Hamiltonian formulation of covariant feld theories.

Scalar Perturbations of two-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz Black Holes

In this article, we study the stability of black hole solutions found in the context of dilatonic Horava-Lifshitz gravity in $1+1$ dimensions by means of the quasinormal modes approach. In order to find the corresponding quasinormal modes, we consider the perturbations of massive and massless scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity. In both cases, we found that the quasinormal modes have a discrete spectrum and are completely imaginary, which leads to damping modes. For a massive scalar field and a non-vanishing cosmological constant, our results suggest unstable behaviour for large values of the scalar field mass.

Stealths on $(1+1)$-dimensional dilatonic gravity

We study gravitational stealth configurations emerging on a charged dilatonic $(1+1)$-D black hole spacetime. We accomplish this by considering the coupling of a non-minimally scalar field $ϕ$ and a self-interacting scalar field $Ψ$ living in a $(1+1)$-D charged black hole background. In addition, the self-interacting potential for $Ψ$ is obtained which exhibits transitions for some specific values of the non-minimal parameter. Atypically, we found that the solutions for these stealth scalar fields do not have a dependence on the temporal coordinate.

Bulk-Boundary interaction and the second law in Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology

By defining $Q$ as a function which realizes the energy transference between the bulk and the boundary of spacetime, as we interprete it here in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) cosmology, flat case, we discuss the validity of the second law of thermodynamics in the light of the sign changes of $Q$ (changes in the direction of energy transference) and its consequences through the cosmic evolution, in particular, whether the thermal equilibrium between bulk and boundary is reached or not. Additionally, we discuss possible phase transitions experienced by the bulk and the boundary (seen as sign changes in their heat capacities) through the cosmic evolution. The energy density in the bulk is modeled under an holographic perspective. As far as we know, currently there is not observational data on bulk-boundary interaction.

Nonminimal derivative coupling scalar-tensor theories: odd-parity perturbations and black hole stability

We derive the odd parity perturbation equation in scalar-tensor theories with a non minimal kinetic coupling sector of the general Horndeski theory, where the kinetic term is coupled to the metric and the Einstein tensor. We derive the potential of the perturbation, by identifying a master function and switching to tortoise coordinates. We then prove the mode stability under linear odd- parity perturbations of hairy black holes in this sector of Horndeski theory, when a cosmological constant term in the action is included. Finally, we comment on the existence of slowly rotating black hole solutions in this setup and discuss their implications on the physics of compact objects configurations, such as neutron stars.

On the flat spacetime Galileons and the Born-Infeld type structures

We show how the flat spacetime Galileon field theories (FSGFT) in arbitrary dimensions can be obtained through a Born-Infeld type structure. This construction involves a brane metric and non-linear combinations of derivatives of a scalar field. Our setup gives rise to some Galileon tensors and vectors useful for the variational analysis which are related to the momentum density of the probe Lovelock branes floating in a $N$-dimensional flat bulk. We find further that the Noether currents associated to these Galileon theories may be written in terms of such tensors.

Quantum modified Regge-Teitelboim cosmology

The canonical quantization of the modified geodetic brane cosmology which is implemented from the Regge-Teitelboim model and the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the brane trajectory, K, is developed. As a second-order derivative model, on the grounds of the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian method and the Dirac's scheme for constrained systems, we find suitable first- and second-class constraints which allow for a proper quantization. We also find that the first-class constraints obey a sort of truncated Virasoro algebra. The effective quantum potential emerging in our approach is exhaustively studied where it shows that an embryonic epoch is still present. The quantum nucleation is sketched where we observe that it is driven by an effective cosmological constant.

Born-Infeld extension of Lovelock brane gravity

We present a Born-Infeld type theory to describe the evolution of p-branes propagating in an N = (p+2)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The expansion of the BI-type volume element gives rise to the (p+1) Lovelock brane invariants associated with the worldvolume swept out by the brane. Contrary to the Lovelock theory in gravity, the number of Lovelock brane Lagrangians differs in this case, depending on the dimension of the worldvolume as a consequence that we consider the embedding functions, instead of the metric, as the field variables. This model depends on the intrinsic and the extrinsic geometries of the worldvolume and in consequence is a second-order theory as shown in the main text. A classically equivalent action is discussed and we comment on its Weyl invariance in any dimension which naturally requires the introduction of some auxiliary fields.

Modified geodetic brane cosmology

We explore the cosmological implications provided by the geodetic brane gravity action corrected by an extrinsic curvature brane term, describing a codimension-1 brane embedded in a 5D fixed Minkowski spacetime. In the geodetic brane gravity action, we accommodate the correction term through a linear term in the extrinsic curvature swept out by the brane. We study the resulting geodetic-type equation of motion. Within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, we obtain a generalized Friedmann equation describing the associated cosmological evolution. We observe that, when the radiation-like energy contribution from the extra dimension is vanishing, this effective model leads to a self-(non-self)-accelerated expansion of the brane-like universe in dependence on the nature of the concomitant β-parameter associated with the correction, which resembles an analogous behaviour in the DGP brane cosmology. Several possibilities in the description for the cosmic evolution of this model are embodied and characterized by the involved density parameters related in turn to the cosmological constant, the geometry characterizing the model, the introduced β-parameter as well as the dark like-energy and the matter content on the brane.
