Hamilton-Jacobi approach for Regge-Teitelboim cosmology

The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for a geodetic brane-like universe described by the Regge-Teitelboim model is developed. We focus on the description of the complete set of Hamiltonians that ensure the integrability of the model in addition to obtaining the Hamilton principal function $S$. In order to do this, we avoid the second-order in derivative nature of the model by appropriately defining a set of auxiliary variables that yields a first-order Lagrangian. Being a linear in acceleration theory, this scheme unavoidably needs an adequate redefinition of the so-called Generalized Poisson Bracket in order to achieve the right evolution in the reduced phase space. Further this Hamilton-Jacobi framework also enables us to explore the quantum behaviour under a semi-classical approximation of the model. A comparison with the Ostrogradski-Hamilton method for constrained systems is also provided in detail.

Hamiltonian dynamics of gonihedric string theory

We develop in a consistent manner the Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework for gonihedric string theory. The local action describing this model, being invariant under reparametrizations, depends on the modulus of the mean extrinsic curvature of the worldsheet swept out by the string, and thus we are confronted with a genuine second-order in derivatives field theory. In our geometric approach, we consider the embedding functions as the field variables and, even though the highly non-linear dependence of the action on these variables, we are able to complete the classical analysis of the emerging constraints for which, after implementing a Dirac bracket, we are able to identify both the gauge transformations and the proper physical degrees of freedom of the model. The Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework is thus considerable robust as one may recover in a straightforward and consistent manner some existing results reported in the literature. Further, in consequence of our geometrical treatment, we are able to unambiguously recover as a by-product the Hamiltonian approach for a particular relativistic point-particle limit associated with the gonihedric string action, that is, a model linearly depending on the first Frenet-Serret curvature.

Covariant momentum map for non-Abelian topological BF field theory

We analyze the inherent symmetries associated to the non-Abelian topological BF theory from the geometric and covariant perspectives of the Lagrangian and the multisymplectic formalisms. At the Lagrangian level, we classify the symmetries of the theory as natural and Noether symmetries and construct the associated Noether currents, while at the multisymplectic level the symmetries of the theory arise as covariant canonical transformations. These transformations allowed us to build within the multisymplectic approach, in a complete covariant way, the momentum maps which are analogous to the conserved Noether currents. The covariant momentum maps are fundamental to recover, after the space plus time decomposition of the background manifold, not only the extended Hamiltonian of the BF theory but also the generators of the gauge transformations which arise in the instantaneous Dirac-Hamiltonian analysis of the first-class constraint structure that characterizes the BF model under study. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial physical model associated to General Relativity for which both natural and Noether symmetries have been analyzed at the multisymplectic level. Our study shed some light on the understanding of the manner in which the generators of gauge transformations may be recovered from the multisymplectic formalism for field theory.

Deformation quantization of constrained systems: a group averaging approach

Motivated by certain concepts introduced by the Refined Algebraic Quantization formalism for constrained systems which has been successfully applied within the context of Loop Quantum Gravity, in this paper we propose a phase space implementation of the Dirac quantization formalism to appropriately include systems with constraints. In particular, we propose a physically prescribed Wigner distribution which allows the definition of a well-defined inner product by judiciously introducing a star version of the group averaging of the constraints. This star group averaging procedure is obtained by considering the star-exponential of the constraints and then integrating with respect to a suitable measure. In this manner, the proposed physical Wigner distribution explicitly solves the constraints by including generalized functions on phase space. Finally, in order to illustrate our approach, our proposal is tested in a couple of simple examples which recover standard results found in the literature.

Causal Poisson bracket via deformation quantization

Starting with the well-defined product of quantum fields at two spacetime points, we explore an associated Poisson structure for classical field theories within the deformation quantization formalism. We realize that the induced star-product is naturally related to the standard Moyal product through an appropriate causal Green's functions connecting points in the space of classical solutions to the equations of motion. Our results resemble the Peierls-DeWitt bracket analyzed in the multisymplectic context. Once our star-product is defined we are able to apply the Wigner-Weyl map in order to introduce a generalized version of Wick's theorem. Finally, we include some examples to explicitly test our method: the real scalar field, the bosonic string and a physically motivated nonlinear particle model. For the field theoretic models we have encountered causal generalizations of the creation/annihilation relations, and also a causal generalization of the Virasoro algebra for the bosonic string. For the nonlinear particle case, we use the approximate solution in terms of the Green's function in order to construct a well-behaved causal bracket.

Hamiltonian analysis for linearly acceleration-dependent Lagrangians

We study the constrained Ostrogradski-Hamilton framework for the equations of motion provided by mechanical systems described by second-order derivative actions with a linear dependence in the accelerations. We stress out the peculiar features provided by the surface terms arising for this type of theories and we discuss some important properties for this kind of actions in order to pave the way for the construction of a well defned quantum counterpart by means of canonical methods. In particular, we analyse in detail the constraint structure for these theories and its relation to the inherent conserved quantities where the associated energies together with a Noether charge may be identifed. The constraint structure is fully analyzed without the introduction of auxiliary variables, as proposed in recent works involving higher order Lagrangians. Finally, we also provide some examples where our approach is explicitly applied and emphasize the way in which our original arrangement results in propitious for the Hamiltonian formulation of covariant feld theories.

Deformation quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator

We analyze the quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck fourth order oscillator within the framework of deformation quantization. Our approach exploit the Noether symmetries of the system by proposing integrals of motion as the variables to obtain a solution to the -genvalue equation, namely the Wigner function. We also obtain, by means of a quantum canonical transformation the wave function associated to the Schrödinger equation of the system. We show that unitary evolution of the system is guaranteed by means of the quantum canonical transformation and via the properties of the constructed Wigner function, even in the so called equal frequency limit of the model, in agreement with recent results.

Quantum modified Regge-Teitelboim cosmology

The canonical quantization of the modified geodetic brane cosmology which is implemented from the Regge-Teitelboim model and the trace of the extrinsic curvature of the brane trajectory, K, is developed. As a second-order derivative model, on the grounds of the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian method and the Dirac's scheme for constrained systems, we find suitable first- and second-class constraints which allow for a proper quantization. We also find that the first-class constraints obey a sort of truncated Virasoro algebra. The effective quantum potential emerging in our approach is exhaustively studied where it shows that an embryonic epoch is still present. The quantum nucleation is sketched where we observe that it is driven by an effective cosmological constant.

Modified geodetic brane cosmology

We explore the cosmological implications provided by the geodetic brane gravity action corrected by an extrinsic curvature brane term, describing a codimension-1 brane embedded in a 5D fixed Minkowski spacetime. In the geodetic brane gravity action, we accommodate the correction term through a linear term in the extrinsic curvature swept out by the brane. We study the resulting geodetic-type equation of motion. Within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, we obtain a generalized Friedmann equation describing the associated cosmological evolution. We observe that, when the radiation-like energy contribution from the extra dimension is vanishing, this effective model leads to a self-(non-self)-accelerated expansion of the brane-like universe in dependence on the nature of the concomitant β-parameter associated with the correction, which resembles an analogous behaviour in the DGP brane cosmology. Several possibilities in the description for the cosmic evolution of this model are embodied and characterized by the involved density parameters related in turn to the cosmological constant, the geometry characterizing the model, the introduced β-parameter as well as the dark like-energy and the matter content on the brane.

Quantum charged rigid membrane

The early Dirac proposal to model the electron as a charged membrane is reviewed. A rigidity term, instead of the natural membrane tension, involving linearly the extrinsic curvature of the worldvolume swept out by the membrane is considered in the action modeling the bubble in the presence of an electromagnetic field. We set up this model as a genuine second-order derivative theory by considering a non-trivial boundary term which plays a relevant part in our formulation. The Lagrangian in question is linear in the bubble acceleration and by means of the Ostrogradski-Hamiltonian approach we observed that the theory comprises the management of both first- and second-class constraints. We show thus that our second-order approach is robust allowing for a proper quantization. We found an effective quantum potential which permits to compute bounded states for the system. We comment on the possibility of describing brane world universes by invoking this kind of second-order correction terms.

Group averaging in the (p,q) oscillator representation of SL(2,R)

We investigate refined algebraic quantisation with group averaging in a finite-dimensional constrained Hamiltonian system that provides a simplified model of general relativity. The classical theory has gauge group SL(2,R) and a distinguished o(p,q) observable algebra. The gauge group of the quantum theory is the double cover of SL(2,R), and its representation on the auxiliary Hilbert space is isomorphic to the (p,q) oscillator representation. When p>1, q>1 and p+q == 0 (mod 2), we obtain a physical Hilbert space with a nontrivial representation of the o(p,q) quantum observable algebra. For p=q=1, the system provides the first example known to us where group averaging converges to an indefinite sesquilinear form.
