On Nieh-Yan Transport

We study nondissipative transport induced by the Nieh-Yan anomaly. After computing the torsional terms in the equilibrium partition function using transgression, we find the constitutive relations for the covariant axial-vector, heat, stress, and spin currents. A number of new transport effects are found, driven by background torsion and the spin chemical potential. Torsional constitutive relations in two-dimensional systems are also analyzed.

Constitutive relations of a chiral hadronic fluid

We study the role of non-abelian anomalies in relativistic fluids. To this end, we compute the local functional that solves the anomaly equations, and obtain analytical expressions for the covariant currents and the Bardeen-Zumino terms. We particularize these results to a background with two flavors, and consider the cases of unbroken and broken chiral symmetry. Finally, we provide explicit results for the constitutive relations of chiral nuclear matter interacting with external electromagnetic fields and in presence of chiral imbalance. We emphasize the non-dissipative nature of the chiral electric effect.

Planar Zeros in Gauge Theories and Gravity

Planar zeros are studied in the context of the five-point scattering amplitude for gauge bosons and gravitons. In the case of gauge theories, it is found that planar zeros are determined by an algebraic curve in the projective plane spanned by the three stereographic coordinates labelling the direction of the outgoing momenta. This curve depends on the values of six independent color structures. Considering the gauge group SU(N) with N=2,3,5 and fixed color indices, the class of curves obtained gets broader by increasing the rank of the group. For the five-graviton scattering, on the other hand, we show that the amplitude vanishes whenever the process is planar, without imposing further kinematic conditions. A rationale for this result is provided using color-kinematics duality.

Constraints on hidden photons from current and future observations of CMB spectral distortions

A variety of beyond the standard model scenarios contain very light hidden sector U(1) gauge bosons undergoing kinetic mixing with the photon. The resulting oscillation between ordinary and hidden photons leads to spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background. We update the bounds on the mixing parameter $χ_0$ and the mass of the hidden photon $m_{γ'}$ for future experiments measuring CMB spectral distortions, such as PIXIE and PRISM/COrE. For $10^{-14}\;{\rm eV}\lesssim m_{γ'}\lesssim 10^{-13}\;{\rm eV}$, we find the kinetic mixing angle $χ_0$ has to be less than $10^{-8}$ at 95\% CL. These bounds are more than an order of magnitude stronger than those derived from the COBE/FIRAS data.

The Double Copy Structure of Soft Gravitons

The subleading corrections to factorization theorems for soft bremsstrahlung in nonabelian gauge theories and gravity are investigated in the case of a five point amplitude with four scalars. Building on recent results, we write the action of the angular momentum operators on scattering amplitudes as derivatives with respect to the Mandelstam invariants to uncover a double copy structure in the contribution of the soft graviton to the amplitude, both in the leading term and the first correction. Using our approach, we study Gribov's theorem as extended to nonabelian gauge theories and gravity by Lipatov, and find that subleading corrections can be obtained from those to Low's theorem by dropping the terms with derivatives with respect to the center-of-mass energy, which are suppressed at high energies. In this case, the emitted gravitons are not necessarily soft.

Color-kinematics duality and dimensional reduction for graviton emission in Regge limit

In this talk we review the work in [1,2,3] where we have studied the applicability of the color-kinematics duality to the scattering of two distinguishable scalar matter particles with one gluon emission in QCD, or one graviton emission in Einstein gravity. We have shown that the duality works well in the Regge limit under two different extensions of the gauge theory: the introduction of a new scalar contact interaction and the relaxation of the distinguishability of the scalars. Both modifications correspond to theories obtained by dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional pure gauge theories.

Color-Kinematics Duality in Multi-Regge Kinematics and Dimensional Reduction

In this note we study the applicability of the color-kinematics duality to the scattering of two distinguishable scalar matter particles with gluon emission in QCD, or graviton emission in Einstein gravity. Previous analysis suggested that direct use of the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson double-copy prescription to matter amplitudes does not reproduce the gravitational amplitude in multi-Regge kinematics. This situation, however, can be avoided by extensions to the gauge theory, while maintaning the same Regge limit. Here we present two examples of these extensions: the introduction of a scalar contact interaction and the relaxation of the distinguishability of the scalars. In both cases new diagrams allow for a full reconstruction of the correct Regge limit on the gravitational side. Both modifications correspond to theories obtained by dimensional reduction from higher-dimensional gauge theories.

A Note on the Collision of Reissner-Nordström Gravitational Shock Waves in AdS

We study the collision of two Reissner-Nordström gravitational shock waves in AdS and show that the charge completely prevents the formation of marginally trapped surfaces of the Penrose type with topology S^(D-2), independently of the energy and the value of the impact parameter. In the case of head-on collisions, a numerical analysis shows that no trapped surfaces with topology S^1 \times S^(D-3) form either.

Color-Kinematics Duality and the Regge Limit of Inelastic Amplitudes

We investigate tree-level five-point amplitudes in scalar-QCD expressed in terms of Sudakov variables and find the equivalent "gravitational" counterparts using the color-kinematics duality proposed by Bern, Carrasco, and Johannson. Taking the multi-Regge limit in the gravitational amplitudes, we show that those pieces in the coupling of two reggeized gravitons to one on-shell graviton directly stemming from the double copy of the vertex for two reggeized gluons to one on-shell gluon are universal and properly reproduced by the duality.

Gravitational shocks as a key ingredient of Gamma-Ray Bursts

We identify a novel physical mechanism that may be responsible for energy release in $γ$-ray bursts. Radial perturbations in the neutron core, induced by its collision with collapsing outer layers during the early stages of supernova explosions, can trigger a gravitational shock, which can readily eject a small but significant fraction of the collapsing material at ultra-relativistic speeds. The development of such shocks is a strong-field effect arising in near-critical collapse in General Relativity and has been observed in numerical simulations in various contexts, including in particular radially perturbed neutron star collapse, albeit for a tiny range of initial conditions. Therefore, this effect can be easily missed in numerical simulations if the relevant parameter space is not exhaustively investigated. In the proposed picture, the observed rarity of $γ$-ray bursts would be explained if the relevant conditions for this mechanism appear in only about one in every $10^4-10^5$ core collapse supernovae. We also mention the possibility that near-critical collapse could play a role in powering the central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei.

Graviton emission in Einstein-Hilbert gravity

The five-point amplitude for the scattering of two distinct scalars with the emission of one graviton in the final state is calculated in exact kinematics for Einstein-Hilbert gravity. The result, which satisfies the Steinmann relations, is expressed in Sudakov variables, finding that it corresponds to the sum of two gauge invariant contributions written in terms of a new two scalar - two graviton effective vertex. A similar calculation is carried out in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) for the scattering of two distinct quarks with one extra gluon in the final state. The effective vertices which appear in both cases are then evaluated in the multi-Regge limit reproducing the well-known result obtained by Lipatov where the Einstein-Hilbert graviton emission vertex can be written as the product of two QCD gluon emission vertices, up to corrections to preserve the Steinmann relations.

Colliding AdS gravitational shock waves in various dimensions and holography

The formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the off-center collision of two shock waves on AdS_D (with D=4,5,6,7 and 8) is studied numerically. We focus on the case when the two waves collide with nonvanishing impact parameter while the sources are located at the same value of the holographic coordinate. In all cases a critical value of the impact parameter is found above which no trapped surface is formed. The numerical results show the existence of a simple scaling relation between the critical impact parameter and the energy of the colliding waves. Using the isometries of AdS_D we relate the solutions obtained to the ones describing the collision of two waves with a purely holographic impact parameter. This provides a gravitational dual for the head-on collision of two lumps of energy of unequal size.

Comments on noncommutative gravity

We study the possibility of obtaining noncommutative gravity dynamics from string theory in the Seiberg-Witten limit. We find that the resulting low-energy theory contains more interaction terms than those proposed in noncommutative deformations of gravity. The role of twisted diffeomorphisms in string theory is studied and it is found that they are not standard physical symmetries. It is argued that this might be the reason why twisted diffeomorphisms are not preserved by string theory in the low energy limit. Twisted gauge transformations are also discussed.
