Breather Solutions to the Cubic Whitham Equation

We are concerned with numerical approximations of breather solutions for the cubic Whitham equation which arises as a water-wave model for interfacial waves. The model combines strong nonlinearity with the non-local character of the water-wave problem. The equation is non-integrable as suggested by the inelastic interaction of solitary waves. As a non local model, it generalizes, in the low frequency limit, the well known modified KdV (mKdV) equation which is a completely-integrable model. The mKdV equation has breather solutions, i.e. periodic in time and localized in space biparametric solutions. It was recently shown that these breather solutions appear naturally as ground states of invariant integrals, suggesting that such structures may also exist in non-integrable models, at least in an approximate sense. In this work, we present numerical evidence that in the non-integrable case of the cubic Whitham equation, breather solutions may also exist.

Stability of mKdV breathers on the half-line

In this paper we study the stability problem for mKdV breathers on the left half-line. We are able to show that leftwards moving breathers, initially located far away from the origin, are strongly stable for the problem posed on the left half-line, when assuming homogeneous boundary conditions. The proof involves a Lyapunov functional which is almost conserved by the mKdV flow once we control some boundary terms which naturally arise.

Stability and instability of breathers in the $U(1)$ Sasa-Satusuma and Nonlinear Schrödinger models

We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss. In this paper we find the natural $H^2$ variational characterization for each of them, and prove that Sasa-Satsuma breathers are $H^2$ nonlinearly stable, improving the linear stability property previously proved by Pelinovsky and Yang. Moreover, in the SS case, we provide an alternative understanding of the SS solution as a breather, and not only as an embedded soliton. The method of proof is based in the use of a $H^2$ based Lyapunov functional, in the spirit of the first and third authors, extended this time to the vector-valued case. We also provide another rigorous justification of the instability of the remaining three nonlinear modes (Satsuma-Yajima, Peregrine y Kuznetsov-Ma), based in the study of their corresponding linear variational structure (as critical points of a suitable Lyapunov functional), and complementing the instability results recently proved e.g. in a paper by the third author.

Review on the stability of the Peregrine and related breathers

In this note, we review stability properties in energy spaces of three important nonlinear Schrödinger breathers: Peregrine, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Akhmediev. More precisely, we show that these breathers are unstable according to a standard definition of stability. Suitable Lyapunov functionals are described, as well as their underlying spectral properties. As an immediate consequence of the first variation of these functionals, we also present the corresponding nonlinear ODEs fulfilled by these NLS breathers. The notion of global stability for each breather above mentioned is finally discussed. Some open questions are also briefly mentioned.

On the variational structure of breather solutions

In this paper we give a systematic and simple account that put in evidence that many breather solutions of integrable equations satisfy suitable variational elliptic equations, which also implies that the stability problem reduces in some sense to $(i)$ the study of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ the understanding of how bad directions (if any) can be controlled using low regularity conservation laws. We exemplify this idea in the case of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), Gardner, and sine-Gordon (SG) equations. Then we perform numerical simulations that confirm, at the level of the spectral problem, our previous rigorous results, where we showed that mKdV breathers are $H^2$ and $H^1$ stable, respectively. In a second step, we also discuss the Gardner and the Sine-Gordon cases, where the spectral study of a fourth-order linear matrix system is the key element to show stability. Using numerical methods, we confirm that all spectral assumptions leading to the $H^2\times H^1$ stability of SG breathers are numerically satisfied, even in the ultra-relativistic, singular regime. In a second part, we study the periodic mKdV case, where a periodic breather is known from the work of Kevrekidis et al. We rigorously show that these breathers satisfy a suitable elliptic equation, and we also show numerical spectral stability. However, we also identify the source of nonlinear instability in the case described in Kevrekidis et al. Finally, we present a new class of breather solution for mKdV, believed to exist from geometric considerations, and which is periodic in time and space, but has nonzero mean, unlike standard breathers.

Discrete conservation laws and the convergence of long time simulations of the mKdV equation

Pseudospectral collocation methods and finite difference methods have been used for approximating an important family of soliton like solutions of the mKdV equation. These solutions present a structural instability which make difficult to approximate their evolution in long time intervals with enough accuracy. The standard numerical methods do not guarantee the convergence to the proper solution of the initial value problem and often fail by approaching solutions associated to different initial conditions. In this frame the numerical schemes that preserve the discrete invariants related to some conservation laws of this equation produce better results than the methods which only take care of a high consistency order. Pseudospectral spatial discretization appear as the most robust of the numerical methods, but finite difference schemes are useful in order to analyze the rule played by the conservation of the invariants in the convergence.

Focusing mKdV Breather Solutions with Nonvanishing Boundary Conditions by the Inverse Scattering Method

Using the Inverse Scattering Method with a nonvanishing boundary condition, we obtain the square k^2 of a focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) breather solution with non zero vacuum parameter b^2 . We are able to factorize and simplify it in order to get explicitly the associated mKdV breather solution k with non zero vacuum parameter b. Moreover, taking the limiting case of zero frequency, we obtain a generalization of the Double Pole solution introduced by M.Wadati et al.

The Gardner equation and the L^2-stability of the N-soliton solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation

Multi-soliton solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) are shown to be globally L2-stable, and asymptotically stable in the sense of Martel-Merle. The proof is surprisingly simple and combines the Gardner transform, which links the Gardner and KdV equations, together with the Martel-Merle-Tsai and Martel-Merle recent results on stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space, applied this time to the Gardner equation. As a by-product, the results of Maddocks-Sachs and Merle-Vega are improved in several directions.

Well-posedness and stability results for the Gardner equation

In this article we present local well-posedness results in the classical Sobolev space H^s(R) with s > 1/4 for the Cauchy problem of the Gardner equation, overcoming the problem of the loss of the scaling property of this equation. We also cover the energy space H^1(R) where global well-posedness follows from the conservation laws of the system. Moreover, we construct solitons of the Gardner equation explicitly and prove that, under certain conditions, this family is orbitally stable in the energy space.
