Homogeneous vector bundles over abelian varieties via representation theory

Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a field. The homogeneous (or translation-invariant) vector bundles over $A$ form an abelian category ${\rm HVec}_A$; the Fourier-Mukai transform yields an equivalence of ${\rm HVec}_A$ with the category of coherent sheaves with finite support on the dual abelian variety. In this paper, we develop an alternative approach to homogeneous vector bundles, based on the equivalence of ${\rm HVec}_A$ with the category of finite-dimensional representations of a commutative affine group scheme (the "affine fundamental group" of $A$). This displays remarkable analogies between homogeneous vector bundles over abelian varieties and representations of split reductive algebraic groups.

Commutative algebraic groups up to isogeny

Consider the abelian category $\mathcal{C}_k$ of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field $k$. By results of Serre and Oort, $\mathcal{C}_k$ has homological dimension $1$ (resp. $2$) if $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic $0$ (resp. positive). In this article, we explore the abelian category of commutative algebraic groups up to isogeny, defined as the quotient of $\mathcal{C}_k$ by the full subcategory $\mathcal{F}_k$ of finite $k$-group schemes. We show that $\mathcal{C}_k/\mathcal{F}_k$ has homological dimension $1$, and we determine its projective or injective objects. We also obtain structure results for $\mathcal{C}_k/\mathcal{F}_k$, which take a simpler form in positive characteristics.

Homogeneous projective bundles over abelian varieties

We consider those projective bundles (or Brauer-Severi varieties) over an abelian variety that are homogeneous, i.e., invariant under translation. We describe the structure of these bundles in terms of projective representations of commutative algebraic groups; the irreducible bundles correspond to Heisenberg groups and their standard representations. Our results extend those of Mukai on semi-homogeneous vector bundles, and yield a geometric view of the Brauer group of abelian varieties.

On Algebraic Semigroups and Monoids, II

Consider an algebraic semigroup $S$ and its closed subscheme of idempotents, $E(S)$. When $S$ is commutative, we show that $E(S)$ is finite and reduced; if in addition $S$ is irreducible, then $E(S)$ is contained in a smallest closed irreducible subsemigroup of $S$, and this subsemigroup is an affine toric variety. It follows that $E(S)$ (viewed as a partially ordered set) is the set of faces of a rational polyhedral convex cone. On the other hand, when $S$ is an irreducible algebraic monoid, we show that $E(S)$ is smooth, and its connected components are conjugacy classes of the unit group.

On connected automorphism groups of algebraic varieties

Let $X$ be a normal projective algebraic variety, $G$ its largest connected automorphism group, and $A(G)$ the Albanese variety of $G$. We determine the isogeny class of $A(G)$ in terms of the geometry of $X$. In characteristic 0, we show that the dimension of $A(G)$ is the rank of every maximal trivial direct summand of the tangent sheaf of $X$. Also, we obtain an optimal bound for the dimension of the largest anti-affine closed subgroup of $G$ (which is the smallest closed subgroup that maps onto $A(G)$).

Notions of purity and the cohomology of quiver moduli

We explore several variations of the notion of purity for the action of Frobenius on schemes defined over finite fields. In particular, we study how these notions are preserved under certain natural operations like quotients for principal bundles and also geometric quotients for reductive group actions. We then apply these results to study the cohomology of quiver moduli. We prove that a natural stratification of the space of representations of a quiver with a fixed dimension vector is equivariantly perfect and from it deduce that each of the $l$-adic cohomology groups of the quiver moduli space is strongly pure.

Prime-to-p étale covers of algebraic groups

Let G be a connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p (possibly 0), and X a variety on which G acts transitively with connected stabilizers. We show that any étale Galois cover of X of degree prime to p is also homogeneous, and that the maximal prime-to-p quotient of the étale fundamental group of X is commutative. We moreover obtain an explicit bound for the number of topological generators of the said quotient. When G is commutative, we also obtain a description of the prime-to-p torsion in the Brauer group of G.
