Advanced RF Structures for Wakefield Acceleration and High-Gradient Research

Structure wakefield acceleration (SWFA) is one of the most promising AAC schemes in several recent strategic reports, including DOE's 2016 AAC Roadmap, report on the Advanced and Novel Accelerators for High Energy Physics Roadmap (ANAR), and report on Accelerator and Beam Physics Research Goals and Opportunities. SWFA aims to raise the gradient beyond the limits of conventional radiofrequency (RF) accelerator technology, and thus the RF to beam energy efficiency, by reducing RF breakdowns from confining the microwave energy in a short (on the order of about 10 ns) and intense pulse excited by a drive beam. We envision that the following research topics, within the scope of AF7, are of great interest in the next decade: advanced wakefield structures, terahertz and sub-terahertz (THz) structures, and RF breakdown physics. Research on SWFA in the above directions would directly contribute to long-term large-scale applications, including AAC-based linear colliders and compact light sources. There is also potentially a strong synergy between SWFA and other AAC concepts, when structures are combined with plasmas into hybrid AAC schemes. Research on novel structures is at the core of advancing SWFA, and is critical to future AAC-based linear colliders; at the same, it has a strong synergy with other directions, such as cavity designs, high-power microwave systems and sources, and compact light sources.

Generalized Cluster Structures Related to the Drinfeld Double of $GL_n$

We prove that the regular generalized cluster structure on the Drinfeld double of $GL_n$ constructed in arXiv:1912.00453 is complete and compatible with the standard Poisson--Lie structure on the double. Moreover, we show that for $n=4$ this structure is distinct from a previously known regular generalized cluster structure on the Drinfeld double, even though they have the same compatible Poisson structure and the same collection of frozen variables. Further, we prove that the regular generalized cluster structure on band periodic matrices constructed in arXiv:1912.00453 possesses similar compatibility and completeness properties.

Introducing isodynamic points for binary forms and their ratios

The isodynamic points of a plane triangle are known to be the only pair of its centers invariant under the action of the Mobius group on the set of triangles. Generalizing this classical result, we introduce below the isodynamic map associating to a univariate polynomial of degree d at least 3 with at most double roots a polynomial of degree (at most) 2d-4 such that this map commutes with the action of the Mobius group on the zero loci of the initial polynomial and its image. The roots of the image polynomial will be called the isodynamic points of the preimage polynomial. Our construction naturally extends from univariate polynomials to binary forms and further to their ratios.

Characteristic equation for symplectic groupoid and cluster algebras

We use the Darboux coordinate representation found by two of the authors (L.Ch. and M.Sh.) for entries of general symplectic leaves of the $\mathcal A_n$-groupoid of upper-triangular matrices to express roots of the characteristic equation $\det(\mathbb A-λ\mathbb A^{\text{T}})=0$, with $\mathbb A\in \mathcal A_n$, in terms of Casimirs of this Darboux coordinate representation, which is based on cluster variables of Fock--Goncharov higher Teichmüller spaces for the algebra $sl_n$. We show that roots of the characteristic equation are simple monomials of cluster Casimir elements. This statement remains valid in the quantum case as well. We consider a generalization of $\mathcal A_n$-groupoid to a $\mathcal A_{Sp_{2m}}$-groupoid.

Cluster algebras from surfaces and extended affine Weyl groups

We characterize mutation-finite cluster algebras of rank at least 3 using positive semi-definite quadratic forms. In particular, we associate with every unpunctured bordered surface a positive semi-definite quadratic space $V$, and with every triangulation a basis in $V$, such that any mutation of a cluster (i.e., a flip of a triangulation) transforms the corresponding bases into each other by partial reflections. Furthermore, every triangulation gives rise to an extended affine Weyl group of type $A$, which is invariant under flips. The construction is also extended to exceptional skew-symmetric mutation-finite cluster algebras of types $E$.

Grassmann convexity and multiplicative Sturm theory, revisited

In this paper we settle a special case of the Grassmann convexity conjecture formulated earlier by B.and M.Shapiro. We present a conjectural formula for the maximal total number of real zeros of the consecutive Wronskians of an arbitrary fundamental solution to a disconjugate linear ordinary differential equation with real time. We show that this formula gives the lower bound for the required total number of real zeros for equations of an arbitrary order and, using our results on the Grassmann convexity, we prove that the aforementioned formula is correct for equations of orders $4$ and $5$.

Periodic staircase matrices and generalized cluster structures

As is well-known, cluster transformations in cluster structures of geometric type are often modeled on determinant identities, such as short Plucker relations, Desnanot--Jacobi identities and their generalizations. We present a construction that plays a similar role in a description of generalized cluster transformations and discuss its applications to generalized cluster structures in GL_n compatible with a certain subclass of Belavin--Drinfeld Poisson--Lie brackets, in the Drinfeld double of GL_n, and in spaces of periodic difference operators.

Kolmogorov's axioms for probabilities with values in hyperbolic numbers

We introduce the notion of a probabilistic measure which takes values in hyperbolic numbers and which satisfies the system of axioms generalizing directly Kolmogorov's system of axioms. We show that this new measure verifies the usual properties of a probability; in particular, we treat the conditional hyperbolic probability and we prove the hyperbolic analogues of the multiplication theorem, of the law of total probability and of Bayes' theorem. Our probability may take values which are zero--divisors and we discuss carefully this peculiarity.

On the properties of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra

We prove a conjecture about the vertices and edges of the exchange graph of a cluster algebra $\A$ in two cases: when $\A$ is of geometric type and when $\A$ is arbitrary and its exchange matrix is nondegenerate. In the second case we also prove that the exchange graph does not depend on the coefficients of $\A$. Both conjectures were formulated recently by Fomin and Zelevinsky.

Rational growth in the Heisenberg group

A group presentation is said to have rational growth if the generating series associated to its growth function represents a rational function. A long-standing open question asks whether the Heisenberg group has rational growth for all finite generating sets, and we settle this question affirmatively. We also establish almost-convexity for all finite generating sets. Previously, both of these properties were known to hold for hyperbolic groups and virtually abelian groups, and there were no further examples in either case. Our main method is a close description of the relationship between word metrics and associated Carnot-Caratheodory Finsler metrics on the ambient Lie group. We provide (non-regular) languages in any word metric that suffice to represent all group elements.

Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces with orbifold points of arbitrary order and cluster variables

We generalize a new class of cluster type mutations for which exchange transformations are given by reciprocal polynomials. In the case of second-order polynomials of the form $x+2\cos{π/n_o}+x^{-1}$ these transformations are related to triangulations of Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus with at least one hole/puncture and with an arbitrary number of orbifold points of arbitrary integer orders $n_o$. We propose the dual graph description of the corresponding Teichmüller spaces, construct the Poisson algebra of the Teichmüller space coordinates, propose the combinatorial description of the corresponding geodesic functions and find the mapping class group transformations.

Cremmer--Gervais cluster structure on $SL_n$

We study natural cluster structures in the rings of regular functions on simple complex Lie groups and Poisson-Lie structures compatible with these cluster structures. According to our main conjecture, each class in the Belavin-Drinfeld classification of Poisson-Lie structures on $\G$ corresponds to a cluster structure in $Ø(\G)$. We have shown before that this conjecture holds for any $\G$ in the case of the standard Poisson--Lie structure and for all Belavin-Drinfeld classes in $SL_n$, $n<5$. In this paper we establish it for the Cremmer-Gervais Poisson-Lie structure on $SL_n$, which is the least similar to the standard one. Besides, we prove that on $SL_3$ the cluster algebra and the upper cluster algebra corresponding to the Cremmer-Gervais cluster structure do not coincide, unlike the case of the standard cluster structure. Finally, we show that the positive locus with respect to the Cremmer-Gervais cluster structure is contained in the set of totally positive matrices.

Higher pentagram maps, weighted directed networks, and cluster dynamics

The pentagram map that associates to a projective polygon a new one formed by intersections of short diagonals was introduced by R. Schwartz and was shown to be integrable by V. Ovsienko, R. Schwartz and S. Tabachnikov. Recently, M. Glick demonstrated that the pentagram map can be put into the framework of the theory of cluster algebras. In this paper, we extend and generalize Glick's work by including the pentagram map into a family of discrete completely integrable systems. Our main tool is Poisson geometry of weighted directed networks on surfaces developed by M. Gekhtman, M. Shapiro, and A. Vainshtein. The ingredients necessary for complete integrability -- invariant Poisson brackets, integrals of motion in involution, Lax representation -- are recovered from combinatorics of the networks. Our integrable systems depend on one discrete parameter $k>1$. The case $k=3$ corresponds to the pentagram map. For $k>3$, we give our integrable systems a geometric interpretation as pentagram-like maps involving deeper diagonals. If $k=2$ and the ground field is $\C$, we give a geometric interpretation in terms of circle patterns.

Saturation effects on T-cell activation in a model of a multi-stage pathogen

In previous work, we studied host response to a pathogen which uses a cycle of immunologically distinct stages to establish and maintain infection. We showed that for generic parameter values, the system has a unique biologically meaningful stable fixed point. That paper used a simplified model of T-cell activation, making proliferation depend linearly on antigen-T-cell encounters. Here we generalize the way in which T-cell proliferation depends on the sizes of the antigenic populations. In particular, we allow this response to become saturated at high levels of antigen. As a result, we show that this family of generalized models shares the same steady-state behavior properties with the simpler model contemplated in our previous work.

Cluster structures on simple complex Lie groups and the Belavin-Drinfeld classification

We prove a reduction theorem explaining how different parts of the conjecture are related to each other. The conjecture is established for $SL_n$, $n<5$, and for any $\G$ in the case of the standard Poisson-Lie structure.

Failure Filtrations for Fenced Sensor Networks

In this paper we consider the question of sensor network coverage for a 2-dimensional domain. We seek to compute the probability that a set of sensors fails to cover given only non-metric, local (who is talking to whom) information and a probability distribution of failure of each node. This builds on the work of de Silva and Ghrist who analyzed this problem in the deterministic situation. We first show that a it is part of a slightly larger class of problems which is #P-complete, and thus fast algorithms likely do not exist unless P$=$NP. We then give a deterministic algorithm which is feasible in the case of a small set of sensors, and give a dynamic algorithm for an arbitrary set of sensors failing over time which utilizes a new criterion for coverage based on the one proposed by de Silva and Ghrist. These algorithms build on the theory of topological persistence.

Finding an individual's probability of infection in an SIR network is NP-hard

The celebrated Kermack-McKendric model of epidemics studies the transmission of a disease in a population where each individual is initially susceptible (S), may become infective (I) and then removed or recovered (R) and plays no further epidemiological role. This ODE model arises as the limiting case of a network model where each individual has an equal chance of infecting every other. More recent work gives explicit consideration to the network of social interaction and attendant probability of transmission for each interacting pair. The state of such a network is an assignment of the values {S,I,R} to its members. Given such a network, an initial state and a particular susceptible individual, we would like to compute their probability of becoming infected in the course of an epidemic. It turns out that this problem is NP-hard. In particular, it belongs in a class of problems all of whose known solutions require an exponential amount of computation and for which it is unlikely that there will be more efficient solutions.

Generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations for Coxeter-Toda flows from a cluster algebra perspective

We present the third in the series of papers describing Poisson properties of planar directed networks in the disk or in the annulus. In this paper we concentrate on special networks N_{u,v} in the disk that correspond to the choice of a pair (u,v) of Coxeter elements in the symmetric group and the corresponding networks N_{u,v}^\circ in the annulus. Boundary measurements for N_{u,v} represent elements of the Coxeter double Bruhat cell G^{u,v} in GL_n. The Cartan subgroup acts on G^{u,v} by conjugation. The standard Poisson structure on the space of weights of N_{u,v} induces a Poisson structure on G^{u,v}, and hence on its quotient by the Cartan subgroup, which makes the latter into the phase space for an appropriate Coxeter--Toda lattice. The boundary measurement for N_{u,v}^\circ is a rational function that coincides up to a nonzero factor with the Weyl function for the boundary measurement for N_{u,v}. The corresponding Poisson bracket on the space of weights of N_{u,v}^\circ induces a Poisson bracket on the certain space of rational functions, which appeared previously in the context of Toda flows. Following the ideas developed in our previous papers, we introduce a cluster algebra A on this space, compatible with the obtained Poisson bracket. Generalized Bäcklund--Darboux transformations map solutions of one Coxeter--Toda lattice to solutions of another preserving the corresponding Weyl function. Using network representation, we construct generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations as appropriate sequences of cluster transformations in A.

Poisson Geometry of Directed Networks in an Annulus

As a generalization of Postnikov's construction (see arXiv: math/0609764), we define a map from the space of edge weights of a directed network in an annulus into a space of loops in the Grassmannian. We then show that universal Poisson brackets introduced for the space of edge weights in arXiv: 0805.3541 induce a family of Poisson structures on rational-valued matrix functions and on the space of loops in the Grassmannian. In the former case, this family includes, for a particular kind of networks, the Poisson bracket associated with the trigonometric R-matrix.

Poisson Geometry of Directed Networks in a Disk

We investigate Poisson properties of Postnikov's map from the space of edge weights of a planar directed network into the Grassmannian. We show that this map is Poisson if the space of edge weights is equipped with a representative of a 6-parameter family of universal quadratic Poisson brackets and the Grasmannian is viewed as a Poisson homogeneous space of the general linear group equipped with an appropriately chosen R-matrix Poisson-Lie structure. We also prove that Poisson brackets on the Grassmannian arising in this way are compatible with the natural cluster algebra structure.

Poisson structures compatible with the cluster algebra structure in Grassmannians

We describe all Poisson brackets compatible with the natural cluster algebra structure in the open Schubert cell of the Grassmannian $G_k(n)$ and show that any such bracket endows $G_k(n)$ with a structure of a Poisson homogeneous space with respect to the natural action of $SL_n$ equipped with an R-matrix Poisson-Lie structure. The corresponding R-matrices belong to the simplest class in the Belavin-Drinfeld classification. Moreover, every compatible Poisson structure can be obtained this way.

Cluster algebras and triangulated surfaces. Part I: Cluster complexes

We establish basic properties of cluster algebras associated with oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that the underlying cluster complex of such a cluster algebra does not depend on the choice of coefficients, describe this complex explicitly in terms of "tagged triangulations" of the surface, and determine its homotopy type and its growth rate.
